Atrium Noctis A Leviathan Who Seeks Be Aeternal
Talking about Black Metal bands nowadays is an interesting and obligatory exercise as well as if you want to look for new things within this genre. Not everything is Satanism in Black Metal, we come across different sources of inspiration such as mythology, ancient romance, fantasy, sadness and nature that seem to be taken from a book. In this chance Conexión Rock Radio invites you to join us for a new trip in your international interviews, this time Germany is our stop to learn about the history of Atrium Noctis, a Black Metal band that takes its years on the scene, and he has edited 4 albums in his career, being Aeterni (2017) his most recent release.
We talks with one of its founders, the keyboardist and composer Hydra Gorgonia to know about its interesting history, and of which we share with you in this new report:
Conexion Rock Radio: Hydra, it´s a honor to have you here in this special interview for those who want to know about the history and news that Atrium Noctis has in this year for its fans, welcome! Hydra Gorgonia: Thanks to having here Johonny, and can share with your audience the upcoming news that our band have in this year.
CR: Start the interview in know about the reception from the fans around the world to their new album called Aeterni via Sliptrick Records, and that marks the debut of the band with this label. Many consider the most mature and melodic work of the band to date. What details can you share? HG: Aeterni is our latest album with a new lineup. Our new recordings are outrage and complex within our band history. We are crossing all limitations of style or genre. Aeterni means eternal - in my eyes - these compositions are timelessly contemporary and also brings out other colors to great effects.
CR: Curiously, this album breaks a silence of 7 years in relation to his previous work Home. What happened to the band during those years? HG: 7 years ago the whole line up changed and I met new musicians fitting to the band and my musical visions. This change betters the evolution of our music. Aeterni is the evidence of this artistic process. We took our time writing new songs and working on the compositions and details. Our problem are the drums – it’s hard to find a suitable drummer for our music. The drum lines are sophisticated. In order to produce our CD we had the luck to solve this problem. Shortly before the end of the recording a shouter and a female singer join our recording sessions. The outwork on the vocal lines took at least 11 months. And again, it took time until the release of Aeterni was finalized.
CR: In your point of view what are the differences between Home and Aterni? Better production? More ideas from the band? This album is conceptual? HG: For the new album "Aeterni" the new band line up went partially into a new as well as advanced artistic direction. Atrium Noctis plays music which isn't as trendy and has its roots in symphonic dark and black metal. Influences from classical music and carried elements from the area of Pagan Metal contribute a pronounced unique sound and a special type of glamour to the output. Massive darkness paired with a thick shot of hardness is emphasized by the new songs. Melancholic, hymnic and sentimental passages are also a part of the music. Additionally, Epic and colourful nuances enrich everything as a whole. Atrium Noctis loves big sound pictures and have unbounded themselves largely from the genre limits of black metal to allow songs like "Datura Noir" and "Die Nacht des Falken" to be created. Multiple singers are involved and guarantee a wide range of vocal diversity in combination with German lyrics. Atrium noctis has fully dedicated itself to the melodic. The band members have different musical backgrounds: there are musicians, who have played metal their entire lives, but also very much enjoy other types of music. Also a deep black soul from black metal, a female singer who is classically trained and two studied musicians, who are open for anything. Front cover and CD-booklet are made by a painter to suit the exact imagination of the group. Mastered by Martin Buchwalter (Accuser, Suidakra, Perzonal War). With "Aeterni" the musicians of Cologne successfully strive for more authenticity and back to the roots of the original lineup.
CR: Talking about the lineup of the band we know that several musicians have left recently, and that the only incorporation is Uhtred in the Guitar, curiously there is no Bass player, how is the situation of the band before new changes? HG: As you know, in Aeterni this would be the last album with Nemrod, and the first with Uthred, and with Kalliope in the voice. Uthred and Rhadamanthys are members of the band since 3 years ago we work with 3 guitars. Loving polyphonic melodies focuses our direction on a symphonic sound. We decided to play without a bassist. When dealing with the parts with the keyboard, that spectrum was filled, from which people would not have the idea that we do not have bass in the band.
CR: Let's talk a little about the history of the band for those who know it for the first time in our region and other continents. The band was formed in Cologne in 2002, and it was not until 2004 that the band debuted with Blackwards. How was the idea of forming a band like Atrium Noctis and what motivated in play Black Metal? HG: ATRIUM NOCTIS from Cologne, Germany, was formed in 2002 by me. It was originally only planned as a musical project as a work for the „Filmfestspiele Oberhausen“ (Film festival Oberhausen). After having finished the songs, a new band was born. In the autumn of 2003 the band recorded their first album Blackwards in Stonehenge Studio, Siegburg. Because of not having a singer, the whole album was recorded by a guest-singer. The musical influences of that album contain symphonic Black Metal of the late 1990ies as well as Pagan, Dark Metal, atmospherically soundtracks and classical music. When a new singer was found in 2004, ATRIUM NOCTIS showed off their first live-gigs. In November of 2004 the first professional video-shot of the song „Silencio “has been done under the direction of Niklas Hlawatsch and his team. In 2005 the band went again into Stonehenge Studio to record „Eyes Of Medusa “. After a few gigs together with Aardvarks, Nordafrost, Laid In Ashes, In Blackest Velvet, Insignium and Dark Wire, the work on a new album has begun in 2007, so that it was time in 2009 to enter again the studio. This time „Home“ was mastered by Tom Kvalsvoll (Dodheimsgard) from Norway. As a pleasure for the band, the well-known artist Gerald Axelrod gave one of his photographs to be the cover. The year 2010 was very successful for ATRIUM NOCTIS: The 3rd album „Home“ was released by Naturmacht Productions and the next videoclip „Spuren Eines Wolfes“ has been done. Good reviews were followed by gigs, interviews and of course the presentation of the new masterwork.
CR: Until today you are the only of the founders in their current lineup, the rest over the years are changes. Musically how could you evaluate the evolution of Atrium with 4 studio albums until today? HG: In a retrospective view at the time of our beginning and development it was the experience of song writing and my wish to lead a band with all the internal and external problems and challenges in music business. With the production of the first two albums I was afraid to cross boundaries of the genre. On the third album musically new ideas appeared, even though I’m not really convinced recording them. The songs became more and more complex, as the guitars too . On the album Aeterni we came to the point simply playing our music. Upon the high level already achieved, I despise genre limits and smile for a moment thinking someone could feel provoked about it. Until today I am fascinated by Black Metal music - I never gave up.
CR: What is your current perception of the Black Metal scene especially in Germany? Are there limitations? Or is there more opening for acts of this type? HG: I would call the scene diverse, heterogeneous. It’s not a lively scene. There are a few bands playing black, dark or whatever metal for their own. In early times there has been a scene, but nowadays almost everything is either classical metal, death metal or something retro. On concerts you can definitely find people wearing black metal shirts. We are playing more than simple black metal and - to be honest - we don’t doing it for business, we are performing it in love for Black Metal.
CR: You as part of Atrium what could be for you the best album and the most underrated of the band and why? HG: Our album Aeterni - it’s multi-layered, ambiguous, complex and does not immediately reveal itself to the listener. But I think theses are qualities, which aren’t prefered in our fast-paced time.
CR: Currently the band is now on tours? Or are preparing new material for 2019? HG: The next step is to arrange a record with new music at Gernhart Studios together with our friend Martin Buchwalter. After our recording sessions in October we’re producing a new video.
CR: What is the vision that you and your bandmates have with a great band like Atrium Noctis in the coming years? HG: Our vision is to collaborate with a symphonic orchestra or an choir to create a Black Metal symphony - as well as performing in Wacken.
CR: What words do you want to send to those who read this interview for Conexion Rock Radio here in Central, Latinamerica and other continents, and thanks for your time in answer each one of our questions. HG: Let yourselves be lead through a world of stories, myths and legends by „Aeterni“!
CR: Hydra thank you for your time in this special interview! The best for you and the rest of the band that we hope to hear soon news, and likewise to Markus Eck of Metalmessage for putting on our radar an interesting band like Atrium Noctis! HG: Thank you Johonny and dark regards from Atrium Noctis
