Lleva nuestra habilidad técnica a nuevos niveles.
Belphegor Rituals that Conjure Legions Around the World! Exclusive to Latin America
Conexion Rock Radio in its International Interviews Section has had the honor of speaking with the voice and figure of one of the most emblematic bands of extreme metal in Europe, respected by many, hated and censured by others, and whose name and presence roars As a furious beast around the world and who prepare a new chapter in the history of his career when they take out the successor of Conjuring The Dead by mid-year and promises many surprises for a legion of followers who wish to be part of a new ritual , And that by the middle of February and March they invade with their sound several countries of Latin America, ready to literally take Hell on Earth!
Johonny Gonzalez talks with the founder, guitarist & frontmanof the Austrians Belphegor Helmuth Lehner to know his history, fight and the plans that the band will have for 2017 when they prepare a new disc which will be the number 11 in his history and that tentatively Called XI.
Here we reproduce our interview so that you are part of a ritual of extreme possession and that our guest without hairs on the tongue says the truths without hesitation:
Conexion Rock Radio: Helmuth thank you for the time granted in this interview especially for all the Belphegor fans in Latin America. An honor and welcome! Helmut: Hi Johonny and Hails to all Latin American Metal heads. We wanna see you all at the Rituals in February/ March!! Demons, come out and support extreme Death/ Black Metal art and let’s makes some unforgettable Rituals happen. These will be Devil nights full of bizarre Magick!!
CR: Start the interview with a special announcement: The band comes in a Latin American tour, (this is the first for the band?) in Central America will play in El Salvador in Guatemala. Which countries are going to visit for the rest of the tour and what expectation the band has with their fans in these live shows? Helmut: We toured Latin America a couple times, first time I guess was 2005 or 2006 as Tumba productions brought us over, cheers to Eduardo for it. Don’t ask me how often, I guess it’s at least our 5th time over there. This time we march into Argentina, Guatemala, El Salvador and Bolivia where we never toured before, which is a new challenge. We dig it to bring our sound to new territories you know. The best thing about Latin America is how fanatic the crowds are. We adore to play when the sparks are flying: the energy from a fanatic, insane crowd going nuts for the musick is something we feed off of, and we can play more intensely also and the energy overall increases. This is what we live for as a touring ban. It brings life to the sound collages and we feel the possession the musick has over us and the crowds.
CR: We know that the band is currently finalizing some details of what will be the band's new album sometime in 2017. Many fans are hoping that this album will in many ways overtake Conjuring the Dead. What details can you share if there is a name for the new album? Helmut: If you liked CONJURING THE DEAD, you will adore the new yet untitled beast. It takes our technical proficiency to new levels. We've always strived to new heights and new levels of competency as musicians and also to explore creatively and we achieved that to the utmost with this release. We downtuned the guitars more than before, which presented a new challenge which I gladly took on. The drums are blasting as hell and the bass is monstrous. We anticipate this release; we can't wait for it. The name will be released in the coming weeks, among trailers and other details to precede the release of the album in mid September! Hell awaits..
CR: What comparisons are there between this new album and the previous ones? Helmut: It’s a logical development,. The new LP is way more brutal, heavy and obscure than the last offering. That was the main goal as we started this new BELPHEGOR project…full length #XI. And I know we succeeded in every aspect, since we have the best line up in the band and get way better as musicians and as a troop...especially the new drummer , Bloodhammer from Germania brought drumming intensity to a new level. Everything has increased to the next level with this release. As I said, we can't wait for the release of this monster!
CR: At your personal perception how did you see the evolution in the sound of the band since their first days until today? Helmuth: THE LAST SUPPER, man we tracked that LP in 2.5 weeks incl mix/ mastering 1994 at Andy Classen's Stage One Studios in Germania. It's a strong Death/ Black Metal album, back in day at this time there wasn’t any band around that kinda created a symbiose of blasting Black and utmost brutal Death Metal. From the NECRODAEMON TERRORSATHAN LP forward [2000] we changed and took everything more seriously, especially the musicianship,..and tried to enter a new way of extremity, which we think we were successful with the LP after it, entitled LUCIFER INCESTUS and formed our own signature sound we are nowadays known for. The main goal has since then been and remains to increase the level of intensity and dynamics. That's what we are still doing and we're at our best after 24 years. We're more precise than ever in harnessing our craft. It's challenging in the sense of demanding the best out of you to be at the top of your game. We are on fire!
CR: After more than 25 years in the stages how would you define the current situation of the metal industry? Helmut: I don’t wanna talk about business or the industry…it's lame to me you know. We're about overcoming obstacles and improving with every challenge.
CR: In recent years the band has been censored in several countries, and not only Belphegor has been censored for its lyrics and thoughts about wars, politics or religion, some examples such as Cannibal Corpse with censorship of their album covers, Behemoth when faced with accusations in their own country, or Rotting Christ when they had problems with Megadeth with the matter of religion with Dave Mustaine. Belphegor was not the exception also suffered imprisonment, deportations or provocations of religious fanatics against you and your bandmates. How has it been for you to deal with these problems? Helmut: What I really hate are people that were once alcoholics, drug addicts and then go sober and then tell other people that they shouldn’t drink,…to preach you know! I despise that. I've also been an alcoholic, but I never would tell anyone it's bad for you, or you don’t need it and all this fancy shit hypocritical stuff. Fukk religions, we are enemies to the cross. We've been censored and banned in some cities, been harassed by these sheep-like religious fanatics... It doesn't stop us but if idiots like that get too much power, obscure art and underground is in trouble. It already has a limited audience and censorship from such sanctimonious weaklings will only make it harder for real Art [music included] to exist and find expression. Art needs to provoke, excite, change the way you feel or think...if everything must become safe it will all just wither and die.
CR: Fans are an important part of the life of each band, they collect tapes, vinyl’s, CDs, in concerts you will find fans who follow them from the beginning and new fans who begin to know them. How do you look at these generations that are united with your music? Helmut: I don’t like to use the word fan…just saying. Anyways, its great you know, harr I remember this one show on the tour with POSSESSED and ABSU, there was this dude with his son,…its insane you know, I dig it and things like that happens all the time. Or couples that tell me hey we get together at a BELPHEGOR show or as we listened this specific track. We've been in the scene for a lifetime so that often happens and it always leaves an impression. Metal supporters are loyal people!! Generations change but Metal will stay forever. Its passion, pleasure, sex, obscure…its Religion.
CR: What is the formula for Belphegor to survive the current so competitive times? Helmut: We always did our own thing, created and forged our own sound, in our own Reich, hermetically against everything. Walked our own path, took our own decisions and didn’t look or care about what other bands were doing. If most marched left, we marched in the right direction…just to do it different. The easiest way is not always the best way you know...and we still are here and create extreme Art and march in worldwide in the name ov the devil!!
CR: For you what is the best album in your career that you can feel proud of, or that has marked you in an important moment in your life? Helmut: Each LP at its time, writing creating process and tracking studio and releasing is an important chapter for BELPHEGOR and shows that we developed and also experimented here and there to add to our brutal sound. It's hard to pick one out you know. We recorded ten brutal albums, almost XI, since only vocals and lead guitars are left what I start after the Latin American raid and enter the studio to finish this beast.
CR: Many fans prefer the first albums of the band as Blutsabbath or the classic Lucifer Incestus, others prefer more recent albums like Pestapokalypse VI or Blood Magick Necromance. Have you had any comments from the fans about these comparisons in Belphegor's story? Helmut: I agree man. I hear it all time, please do an album like this or that, and so on you know. I always try to please myself first, don’t get me wrong, if people dig it…its great and highly appreciated. I mean as long as they listen to at least one LP its okay with me, but don’t expect us to go back to a THE LAST SUPPER or LUCIFER INCESTUS album. Will definitely NOT happen…I love those LP´s but we are way better musicians now, also better line up and all. It was great for 1994, we gave our best yes. But it wouldn’t please me in 2017. It's not where we are at the present time. We have to keep forging forward, moving onward. Some signature elements and a certain brutal feeling, embracing excess, will always remain, but we never seek to make the same album twice!!!
CR: Belphegor is more Black Metal? Or more Death Metal? Have some day thought to make an album using the Death and Black Metal elements? (A fan make this question for you). Helmut: It's extreme - obscure Musick with offensive lyrical content. We always played the Metal of Death, but of course also with fast, blasting Black Metal influences. So I don’t wanna label it really, people should decide what they want to call it, it's not that important to me. Important is that as soon as you hear a BELPHEGOR track you know, and say hey that’s BELPHEGOR. It's important to be distinct, to have one's own tone, one's own sound: that’s what matters to stand out in a scene full of plagiarists and opportunists.
CR: Many current bands from the extreme scene around the world look at Belphegor an influence on their sound, maybe some young man who saw them at some concert decided to follow their steps with their own bands. What do you think about it? Helmut: As I already mentioned, its highly appreciated if people or bands, musicians in general respect the bands attitude, or better our legacy. I mean it all was hard work with a lot of sacrifices on the way, but it all was worth it, its great to be one of the spearheads nowadays of extreme Metal. 24 years of chaos and excess. Hail!!
CR: What is the band's vision for the next few years in the extreme metal scene? Helmut: We keep on doing what we always do, after the release of the new offering in September there will be a worldwide touring cycle. We start in North America, followed by Europe and beyond. Keep your eyes on our various news media outlets there will be a lot of activities announced pretty soon regarding studio trailers, information about the producer of the new LP, as well as the title! Expect a new video and single track in August.
CR: What words do you want to send to Belphegor fans who read this interview both in Central America, Latin America and Rest of the world? Helmut: Thanks for the space Johonny. We look forward to raising bloody chaos with Latin America!! Hell awaits!
CR: The final question: In a word or phrase how would you define Belphegor in the Worldwide Metal Scene? Helmut: Extreme Musick Ritual Possession!!
The best of luck for Belphegor in this brutal tour of Latin America and many expect from now the new album of the band !!
We especially thank Helmut for the time granted in this interview, and we hope this is the first of many interviews with him and his bandmates in this new adventure that will be written with fire for a legend called Belphegor!
