Conexion Rock Radio: Øystein thank you for attending our special interview here at the hotel on a hot day and that Borknagar fans are very happy to see them live on this date of the tour here in Honduras, it is an honor in talk with you and welcome! Øystein: Thank you for hosting us! We are already in Tegucigalpa Honduras!
We are tired but with all the desire to make a great concert. We arrived from Panama but had problems with the flight, it actually delayed in 12 hours, for that reason we arrived late, but today we had a beautiful day that we have been sleeping a lot in the pool that had enough food and all this to be prepared for The concert today and have a great time with the fans. Hopefully I'll at least we will go to be going to do the best you can we have had such a great tour so far we have you know so many fans so many good you know it's just a good feeling hope things so once we try to do our very best and they're really looking forward to the show tonight then you know we talked with the local promoters today and yesterday evening when they drop some food and stuff and they showed us a picture of the stage and that's amazing as so I'm pretty sure we going to have a great evening both the band but though so hopefully that will do the best I can.
CR: Start the interview by congratulating you for the new album by the band: Winter Thrice, the fans say that this album is now a classic in his discography. How do you feel about writing an important chapter in the history of Borknagar?
Øystein: what can I say I mean it's a I'm on my way really satisfied with the album I'm really proud of the album I'm not coming off of all the feedback we got, from journalist and fans, everything seems to be everybody is really Happy and that's kind of matches also my feelings so it's something what would we spend a lot of time doing that album and I spent almost a year and you're working doing the best I can you know let's do something to make this album the best we could do we always do that but they also want to make this album special you know we got back yet did the original vocalist it's going to do some work on some of the songs and we went to this album to be you know is our 10th album in our career over 20 years since me and actually for the first time recording this album to be something special.
We decided to do this as a kind of jubilee album to celebrate this moment, it's like taking back the first songs and making new arrangements and letting the music itself express itself through the band, and in the end we achieve a result that makes us happy To all: the band and the fans.
CR: As a band How do you define this new album? Can you tell us about the lyrics and the stories behind the music? Øystein: Yes, it is an album especially for also very personal, in particular for a great hero: My Father. He died during the process of this album I was supposed to but there was always a little bit too late, but that was supposed to be first on the album doing something is actually inspired by him and for that reason I dedicated the song The Rhymes of the Mountain, was an opportunity to dedicate that song to him, and he saw that in the recording of this album he I also take your personal project because we had together several ideas that have been reflected in the songs of this new album. But to me it was such a strong inside I had him in my life he had a listen, to him since I was a small kid walking on the mountains, the experience nature being and all that stuff just after we finish the record and such a great but it's just you know once I had the voice so in my life on the other side and maybe one of their Music Live biggest greatest thing I've ever done in my career so that you don't trust so if this this sorrow but also on the other side the proud of the record it was for me for a few months are roller coaster at some point I was very sad sometimes is very proud but not with course it's going down everything but it has to be a very personal side and also deliver it because we always deal with this nature are used nature is as lyrical concept, In addition also takes the subject of prophecies, The Mayas, The Incas, Hades, what happened in the world in 2012, In a way we relate everything with the Nordic Mythology, the Ragnarok, that defines Winter Thrice in several ways. Is referring to the three Winters before the Fall of man according from nature that is about to happen thinks it's about to fall apart on a pain away it's destructive All this focuses on a special cycle with life, in the case of death is something completely depressive. When my father died far from feeling sad was like being reborn in another life, that was the reason to inspire me, to see what is born and die, and if you analyze the content is completely philosophical. I would say the end of the deal is about an experience that life is short make the best out of it I mean you see warning signs on I mean there was even going on the street if you know you can be hit by a car and died and life is over I meant to me too you know you should anyway enjoy life it make the most of it I think the basic concept of this album in many ways. You may be a little pessimistic and go to little perspective. I mean life in general ways, the rise and fall. Shakespeare once said that there is no sound without the shadow I mean the experience of being a shadow, it can be fun in a certain way, it is only a matter of seeing the Angle in which you are in life.
CR: What experiences do you currently have of the tour of South America, recently Brazil , recently Argentina, now in their route plan have Chile, Peru, Colombia, Panama, Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico, what expectation do they have of the countries that visited for the first time?
Øystein: You know that before traveling and giving interviews and I love there are experiences that the public gives you fresh air, there are good and wonderful moments, but there are also bad moments within a tour, there are many negative comments against Latin America that are Dangerous places or people of little confidence who are looking for the moment to do something and the fear is latent when we look at this type of news, example of it in Bogota, we had to escape literally, maybe the moment we played there was not the right, Far from the bad is a pleasure because it is that is so many positive things that we have seen and so much love that there are inside the people and the fans in particular, in this it makes me humbly by my side what I can say that you know I am a simple Norwegian boy who has family and children who live a normal life, and when we started the tour of South America we have found different things, friendly people and fans who want to spend a good time With us, record companies or a photo, especially when we play in Sao Paulo or Buenos Aires, we find people very dedicated and devoted, there is no more interesting detail that we are all connected by music, without aggression, without hatred, Even if you see beyond religion beyond the borders of countries no matter what country or continent you are, all this in the long run has an impact on everyone.
CR: The band has an excellent discography. What differences does this new album have with the previous ones?
Øystein: We've always had that interesting interaction with fans especially when it comes to comparing album. You may like the early or current works more. We have had several producers, sound engineers, members who have gone through the band years ago, in the last 10-15 years I have tried to do things my way, being guitarist, producer and composer and it has been a challenge since then Do everything on our own, that is why I have my studio where I do everything that is necessary, recorded and done what is necessary for the processes that are worked, it is something we have done in years, it is our passion. I can tell you that this new album is very real, if Winter Thrice had gone before people would say that it would sound better in the aspect of production, the point here is that they worked for more than 100% of each one of its members, and we believe That now those who listen to the album will have reasons to appreciate in detail everything that was done, and to know the impression and comments about the work, imagine I'm 42 years old, my first album was 20 years ago and the music I made With the band only reflects one thing: my life. We really do not have to be inspired by trends, whether for times, popularity or being a commercial trend, we are proud and we like what we do, if it is fun when you have bandmates making music, it is more substantial because it is a path Long where you want to see and feel new experiences, and make an interesting universe and in a certain way philosophical, maybe the next album will see what themes we can take and have fun as what happened on this new album (laughs).
CR: Ten albums in 20 years, making tours, composing and recording music, Have you ever felt the need to stop? Øystein: I've tried and many times, do not ask me because I've been with this until today (laughs), I tried to give up everything, but it seems that I live a kind of double life, I'm a person who tries to have a normal life, I want to share my time with my family and the music has become as a source of energy I'm on tour, in the studio all the time. So many places that visit make that routine of life at home is to one side, it is as if you are walking to a mall, and sometimes in some places makes you feel anti-social or unsociable, months ago I changed the way I see Things, especially when I take care of my family, my children. I am not in favor of the ideology of sex, drugs and rock and roll, it is not possible for me, to do that is like undergoing a double life that ends up consuming you, I would not like to live that and it is a matter of balance, Music is my main priority, my life and inspiration.
CR: How has been for you to see the evolution of the sound of the band, its origins go from viking / pagan to progressive Have you already definitively established your sound and identity or are you still trying new things? Øystein: You know since I had the idea of making a band and keep it alive to this day, maybe it is because of my personality as a musician the determining factor in this, besides the labels that impose you on the music are not to my liking the truth, The universe is completely different, same with the large number of genres and sub-genres that the industry puts a label, in my case I do not like those classifications that at commercial level sometimes qualify you for the name that can be taken from a book Of legend or mythology or of a fantasy to give you an idea, for that reason the diversity between the bands of black metal and death metal, that combine several aspects either the folk or viking elements. My vision is to make Borknagar more than a metal band, to do something special to make my own music as universal and put distance from the labels, one of those examples that I admire and hear is Pink Floyd, are those bands that make you fly The mind for the universe, I consider them as one of the greatest bands that history has known, are a phenomenon and a religion. Something that is completely apart from things I feel it and I express it: "Hey, what kind of label are you?" I just answer that my music is intended to express something much larger and that is expressed in words with philosophical and progressive concepts, and What we do with our music is to make a universe. Our roots are there and we will not deny them, we started with black metal and now we evolve to progressive atmospheres.
CR: Many fans think that "Winter Thrice" was not just that album but part of something bigger. Are we talking about a second part, a trilogy or something? Øystein: Mentally I have no plans for now to make trilogies or second parts, everything that implies to make several songs or an album, everything is unpredictable is a question of time if that question could be answered, my mind would be a messy house if I started to think about Sequels (laughs)
CR: We got the attention in one curious thing: of this new album is that there are 4 vocalists, (3 on the band and one special guest) and each one brings their identity in each song, as has been the reaction of you and the audience to see this very interesting balance in a live show? Øystein: That I can tell you ... I am very satisfied with achieving this in the public when each member contributes their vocal quality in each song in a live concert, it is an interesting interaction achieved with effort and professionalism through the years by all in the Band, and what we believe in several ways is the power of the voice that exerts in these presentations in both clean and guttural voices, is the point of attention we have achieved and I repeat I am happy with this.
CR: Are you proud with this current line up? Øystein: It's beautiful it's great to be able to work very talented musicians, and they do not stop at anything! I feel a lucky bastard! (Laughs)
CR: With all your discography there are plans to record a live album? WOA is the perfect place to do it. What do you think about it? Øystein: Personally I do not like to do live albums, I really do not know why, as I told you before, my favorite band is Pink Floyd but I do not appreciate their live performances. CR: ¿You prefer to make more studio albums than live? Øystein: I am more in favor of making an album in studio, because it implies several details to make it feel natural and not mechanical or forced: it is almost like reading a book. In music the principle is not to repeat what you are reading another book with the same subject, if you got five ranking points to make it attractive or if I bought the book, it is how we apply it in painting, make or imagine the texture of the Wall to compare that with music, which makes sense and life, that's why you write a book with a good story, just as you have fun in music. I know a lot of people who are based on that principle and in the end are right.
CR: Many fans say that their first albums are classics like The Olden Domain or Quintessence, others say that Universal, Urd or the new are jewels, what do you think about these comparisons in the history of the band? Øystein: I hope you understand that and that's the way the music lives, I think the same to me you know my favorite Pink Floyd album is not the last I probably do not know about the dark side of the moon or something Maybe it's a Of my favorite songs. To give you an idea the last album of the band The Endless River has its very special moments. I love it a lot, another example is Slayer with Raining Blood for me is one of the best albums ever made. Of the new of them I have not even listened, but you know that it is probably good, it is an album that will have marked progress, but for me my feelings my emotions are connected to write and to make good music now, although I think the same thing happens with The parents when I made my band. I know that for many to listen or see a band is like the first love, or when you are going to drive and listen in your mind those names and you generate those connections that is the way you work. But for me as a musician in my own band I always try to try many things with decision. I have always tried to keep the musical roots in my head to carry with me the whole musical legacy that one does not have to forget where we come from. No use walking for many years without trying to balance the achievements and falls, or keep the boat afloat. The music of the past that is very important for me to jump on some topics or topics one seeks not to fall repetitively is and that is why we instinctively fall into the same place or repeat without realizing something we have gone through previously. And I think sometimes I do not talk about some bands or talk about yourself to jump in some trend wave or something and we do not have to do something like this and forget the musical history, so the result is that those bands or those Songs are lost And suddenly in that oblivion we find those bands not in big places like before but now in small places. That is the sad thing. You want to be happy in music, and I think we have been able to balance these new and old things and take them your way. It is like now that we look at several generations who enjoy music and that generate that connection: parents with their children who go to concerts, it is something very special when we look at it from above. It's very bright to see that, the other day a teacher in his class asked the children to draw logos of bands, and applied the colors and all those details, it's beautiful. That is to say that it is a child wants to be a doctor, then that little doctor thinks in a way, just as music is a way to apply it in the mental or emotional aspect, when you are sick, alone, depressed or sad is the first thing Comes to mind, you imagine those scenes or you do them as a kind of mental Big Bang Pop music survives. I am probably referring to the music I have known that survived me after many years and that is what still lives along the way and those things that make it unique in its style, it is something virtual the whole concept of music is something to do Something out of nothing, which is universal And in theory will be there forever. Do you know what is the most incredible of all this exchange of experiences within the music? You go out on tour, you come to America listen to so many new things, different societies, but the music and the unity is the common factor, and it is what in the end makes things as interesting as musicians and people, we are grateful for it.
