Diablo Blvd Everything good starts at Zero Hour Exclusive for Central and Latin America
Interesting the band that we present in the international interviews for the season 2018 in Conexion Rock Radio, and that in our region is something very sure that our guests will become of many fans here when they know their history and especially their music.
Ladies and gentlemen: Allow me present to you: Diablo Blvd. A band that was born in Antwerp, Belgium in 2005 and that now offer us a new page in its history, their album number four in its career called Zero Hour, released via Nuclear Blast Records, in which Diablo Blvd offer us 11 songs very dynamic, and for his followers around the world proclaim since this is one of his best work so far.
In this chance we talked with his vocalist Alex Agnew to know the reception and good criticism that Zero Hour has obtained internationally. The band in addition to Agnew in the vocals is complemented with Dave Hubrechts and Andries Beckers on Guitars, Tim Bekaert on Bass, and Kris Martens on Drums.
Below we publish this interesting interview for our audience of Central, Latin America and rest of the world: Conexion Rock Radio: Alex thank you for the time you will give us in this special interview for our audience, and to watch on Diablo Blvd an interesting band in which many fans will be doing in Latin America, an honor in being able to converse with you! Alex Agnew: Thank you for taking the time to interview me, Johonny and your audience in Conexion Rock Radio!
CR: Start the interview in knowing what impressions the band has with the release of their new album called Zero Hour, and what reactions have they had from their fans around the world?
AE: We're really happy with the way our album has been received worldwide. The reviews have been really great and the general impression I have is that our fans seem to like the ever evolving musical and lyrical direction of the band.
CR: Zero Hour marks the debut of the band with the record label Nuclear Blast, who made the contact in this case and how do you feel to be part of a great label like this? AA: Actually Nuclear Blast released our third album Follow the Deadlights first, but in many ways Zero Hour is indeed the first album we recorded while on Nuclear Blast. The label contacted us after our album Follow the Deadlights entered the charts in our home county of Belgium, and of course it was a dream come true for us to sign with such a legendary label.
CR: Many fans consider that Zero Hour is one of the best works that the band has done in years, do you think that in this case the production helped them a lot for this interesting final product? AA: Thank you! We also consider it to be our best album to date. Every time we start working on a new album we always try to take the best elements of the album before that and try to make it better. Also working with producer Dag Taeldeman, who is a very talented musician in his own right, really helped with the crafting of the songs.
CR: How would you define in your own words this new chapter in the history of Diablo Blvd? AA: This is definitely our most socially critical and darkest album to date. I wanted it to be a record that is a statement about the times we live in. It's a more Punk and New Wave inspired album than our other albums.
CR: How have you seen the evolution between each Diablo BLVD album? AA: With every album we've grown as songwriters and musicians and we always try to get better and more original musically. Because of the diversity of our musical influences I genuinely think that we have developed our own sound. We don't want to sound like everybody else!
CR: Can you share what has inspired you to compose in this new album? Do you write the lyrics or are there contributions from the rest of the band? AA: I write most of the lyrics, although the band is free to contribute. The inspiration for Zero Hour came from actual events that occurred during the writing process. The song Animal, for instance, was written right after the terrorist attacks in Brussels. The whole album is more personal. It's how I look at humanity and the world we live in.
CR: And what experiences have you left working in the recording studio with Dag Taeldeman in the production Jay Ruston in the mix and with Paul Logus in the mastering? AA: Working with Dag was a great help in crafting the songs and having someone to bounce ideas off while in the studio. We had worked with Jay and Paul before on Follow the Deadlights and they really understand what this band is all about and what we want to sound like. It was a great experience.
CR: What is the formula that Diablo Blvd has for a very interesting album like this one? I feel we have a candidate for good nominations in 2017 AA: We always try to write good songs. That really is the essence of this band. In the end it's all about the songs! Thanks for the nice compliment, by the way!
CR: You have reinvented yourself without using old formulas inspired by the sound of Black Sabbath, Metallica or Killing Joke and Sisters Of Mercy, without a doubt the decade of the 80's has inspired you a lot in Zero Hour, for me the 80's best decade in history! (Laughs) What do you think of it? AA: I just turned 45, so I'm definitely a child of the eighties. I see a lot of parallels with the eighties in the times we live in today: An American president that no one took seriously when he ran for office but who might turn out to be very influential in the future, a female Prime Minister in Britain, a new strong man in Russia, the talks of building walls instead of breakin them down, a new arms race, talks of war between America and a communist county (in this case North Korea), etc... This all sounds very familiar and the music I grew up with (Punk and New Wave) all talked about this in their lyrics so I wanted to continue that tradition. And yes, the eighties were the best!
CR: Diablo Blvd is proud of the legacy that you are writing with music during all these years? It is curious but interesting at the same time that few bands keep their original lineup for several years, you along with Andries and Dave are the only ones that have remained from the beginning and then Tim and Kris until today, as it has been for DB face a personal challenge like this for several years? AA: Well, Dave left the band just before the recording of this album and that was quite a difficult time for us, but it brought the band close together and made us work harder on the album. In the end it's all for the best.
CR: What is your opinion of the interesting scene that is growing in the last years there in Belgium? Recently there have been bands in that country that have given a lot to talk about, and Diablo is one of them. AA: We definitely have an interesting scene with a lot of cool bands that all have a very individualistic sound. Belgium is a very small country and we try to not copy each other as musicians, so I guess that's why many Belgian bands have their own sound.
CR: With four albums and a compilation of demos and rarities (Beyond the Veil) do you think it would be appropriate at this moment to make a live album? Or would they leave that project later? AA: We might do that sometime in the future, but for now there are no plans for a live album.
CR: Do you have plans to do a tour for America next year? AA: We want to tour in as many countries as possible, including Honduras! If the opportunity presents itself, we will be there!
CR: What message do you want to send to those who have read us in this interview, and I thank you for the time to answer each of our questions. AA: You're welcome! My message is: Keep supporting underground music and make up your own mind about everything!
CR: The final question: In a word or a phrase as you would define Diablo Blvd in the Worldwide Metal Scene? AA: I think we are a band that has its own unique voice and I hope we can make a small contribution to the wonderful world of Metal!
CR: Alex I thank you again and we wish you the best of luck for you and your bandmates on the tours they will do with Zero Hour, we hope to talk again in the future! I hope so too! Thank you very much, Johonny and the fans who follow Conexion Rock Radio in Honduras!!
