A veces no me importa, a veces me fastidia y me molesta.

Nargaroth Reborns in the Dawn of the Epiphany Exclusive to Latin America
Majestic, unstoppable, very dark and worthy of being compared to a force of nature, and he continues to write his story with music sending a clear signal to his fans around the world: There are no signs of stopping, and especially when talks about a new album that marks the moment of a new era is coming literally and Black Metal reborns in the Dawn of The Epiphany.
Connection Rock Radio in their International Interviews made contact to Eilenburg, Germany to converse with the voice of one of the most influential extreme metal bands that in recent years has gained worldwide recognition of the metal community. Prepare with a new work that marks a before and after in his career generating a great expectation of what could offer in this year 2017.
Johonny Gonzalez talks with the Nargaroth founder and composer: Rene "Ash" Wagner to known about his history, evolution and experiences in various places around the world, in addition to the determination to move forward on the scene when he presents his new album called Era of Threnody and will be officially released through the record label Inter Arma Productions (property of Ash), and in this special interview will know the origins and the struggle of one of the Black Metal bands loved by many and hated by others despite Of the controversy that has surrounded throughout the years maintain the flag of fight in high, and that in this interview that next we publish this special interview and they are part of the sonic evolution of a legend called: Nargaroth!!
Conexion Rock Radio: Ash thanks for the time you give us in this interview from Conexion Rock Radio, especially for Nargaroth fans around the world, it's an honor to talk to you!
Start the interview congratulating you for the release of “Era of Threnody” after 8 years of absence of the last album “Jahreszeiten” in 2009. This is a proof that the band returns strong and its fans receive this new work with open arms. How do you define this new work in the history of Nargaroth?
ASH: Thank you for having me here. I have to correct you here. The last album was released in 2011. Only because I worked with another musician during the recording of my last album, doesn't mean it is anything less than a genuine NARGAROTH album. Just because internet-born outsiders give that album a different label doesn't mean their opinion correct. I'd say is the most introspective and insightful in my 'career' as song writer. I went through a hard time – and I don't mean that in a tearful weepy emo way. In this time all what defines me did conjunct into one situation that revealed to myself the error in my being that I consistently repeated. And to deal with it was a tedious struggle. The actual album “Era of Threnody” reflects the process of dealing with it, beginning with the initial situation, ending with its echoing memories – exaggeratedly mournful spoken. Therefore the album continues the tradition of rather reflect life-oriented matters than occult or even religious related topics in NARGAROTH albums.
CR: What comparisons are there between this new album and the previous ones? ASH: I do not compare my recent work with any previous album. The main difference is that other and new experiences and life events are the origin of the new albums content and atmosphere. What I dealt with on “Jahreszeiten” was closed when I finished the recording. New life experiences where ahead and their act of processing is described on my new album “Era of Threnody”. If there would be a comparison, then that for both I worked in professional studios.
CR: Something curious that has caught the attention that “Era of Threnody” will be the first work of Nargaroth that will be released via Inter Arma Productions and that this record label is your property. In addition to this you are reissuing the whole discography of the band.
ASH: Yes, I release this album through my own label and work with several international distributors. I also already reissued the whole discography. This was never planned but seemed to be the best scenario after I decided to leave my former label in 2013. As detailed stated by me in the Pest Webzine in January 2014, I stayed with NO COLOURS RECORDS for a long time. I overcame big troubles with them because of their reputation, because I felt bond to the word I gave him back in 1999 when he helped me out of deep trouble. But over the past years, especially in 2011, I got more and more the impression, that he didn’t put enough energy into his label. To my eyes, in the last decade, he lost the grip to the changing label work. Aside that I felt he lost interest in the serious metal work. In a conversation he partly agreed with it. It's fair for me. I understand that there can come a time when you must reorganize your path and maybe you find out your old ways aren’t proper anymore for you. But you must be fair enough to tell it to the ones who depend on you, the bands who expect you to do a good job, to work in their interest. And in that case NO COLOURS RECORDS haven’t done the necessary. Almost all the big bands that were on NO COLOURS RECORDS left, cause they saw the limits of the label.
I have accepted these problems for a long time. Problems with the quality of the merchandise, the small international distribution of NARGAROTH’s releases and many more that I won't discuss here. So, after many years of conversations and promises to change from his side, and having only done small or no changes at all, I told him I couldn’t stay under his flag anymore. It's hard to act against my word, but I gave him more than enough chances. Therefore I have decided that I will release further NARGAROTH releases on my own.
CR: How has it been for you to keep the legacy of the band alive? ASH I have no idea how to answer that question. I think by the fact that the art Black Metal is really dear to me and that my music and therefore my band is not just for show or an episode in my youth, I am consistent and also persistent. My music – if you may call it so – is my way to deal with my life's sideways and its defining events. Being still around and being more than just an satanic band made it possible, that people included NARGAROTH as a accompanying element into their lives. And of course never giving up on the hits life and the scene gives you. This and being humble enough to understand that NARGAROTH definitely has its personal value, but is by far not that important for the history of worldwide Black Metal than I thought or wanted it to be when I was younger.
CR: Let's talk about the new album. Is it conceptual? What details can you share? ASH: In the albums booklet I write to the background of the album itself: Each stage of one’s life has its very own struggles, temptations or aberrations and most of us feels a longing for something. Something that heals or fulfills our life and sometimes leaves us in despair. The events, whose overcoming process is reflected in this album, drove me into a self-imposed nomadic lifestyle, which took me around the world – homeless, aimless. In brief periods of pause, I lived in rural volcanic regions of Mexico and in the seclusion of Canadian Indian reserves, where the lyrics to this album were written. My personal notion is that there are only few musical forms of expression with a masculine temper in their emotional quality that I find appealing. Since I consider a traditional archetype of Flamenco one of these few expressions, I have been following up to the idea of incorporating it into my music for quite a while. But the necessary high level guitar skills have prevented its realization for a long time. When I did a concert in Paris in 2013, I mentioned my idea to Bernth, who – among other things – was studying Jazz guitar at a musical academy in Vienna and belonged to NARGAROTH´s live lineup. Later, when – independently of each other – both of our lives’ familiar orders fell apart we joined to realize this project. Original flamenco, being the music of nomadic, homeless and rural people, merged seamlessly into my life story and the history behind this album. It took me well over a year to overcome my mournfulness and the background factors that led to the events occurring in 2014/15 and to take control of my fate again. During times of emotional uproar, my creative abilities are limited, because melancholy – which I completely succumb to – takes full control of me. I only try in hindsight to find out how to put my experience to music, which is why this album is two years late. All of the songs refer to actual experiences and events mostly having taken place in Las Vegas and the Mojave Desert.
CR: Currently you are the only one who is in charge of the process of composition and production within the band, is more Nargaroth a studio band or a band for a live show? ASH: I think NARGAROTH can be both. The worldwide touring and studio albums does proof that.
CR: Besides you on vocals and other instruments, do you have musicians who collaborate full time or are collaborators for live shows?
ASH: I always work(ed) with guest musicians to realize different tasks with NARGAROTH. Without Bernth, an excellent, creative guitarist and the well-known Krimh, a great drummer, the actual album would never have happened. And without Beliath, who is a very important character in NARGAROTH´S live performance, no concert could take place. So being genuine a sole project of myself, it needs dedicated and talented individuals to make big things happen.
CR: In your personal perception, how do you see the evolution in the sound of the band from its first days until today? ASH: I got older, so did the issues I address in my songs. Depending on that I chose the sound the album will come along. I don't think I have changed much of a sound as I sound different on each album. Yearlong fans or listeners might have a different opinion.
CR: You as founder of the band in these 21 years on the stage, how would you define the current situation of the industry? ASH: Considering the industry alone: Pretty fucked up. That's why I don't want to participate too much on it and do the minimum only when it comes to public work. The digital age might have made it easier to obtain music, but it also attracts unfit individuals, non-metallions. Political Correctness and other weird social demands put another pressure on a genre, that originally was everything but politically correct or in any way conform. But the increasing number of so called non-metallions in Magazines and other departments among the industry, allows more and more soft bands to dominate key positions, what gags and suppresses the whole scene with sometimes ridicules accusations. Just another reason for me not to participate anymore. I didn't need the established German metal press to become a world known and touring band, so I don’t need them now. They are nothing but shadows and dust.
CR: The Black Metal has received censorship from several countries for its lyrics and thoughts on wars, politics or religion, Nargaroth has not been the exception, arrests, deportations or provocations of religious fanatics who attack against several musicians. How has it been for you to deal with these problems?
ASH: Different. Sometimes I don't care, sometimes it bugs and annoys me. Mainly when lies created by the metal press or the scene affects my private life it gets tedious. Although the metal world received a terrible amount of stupid censorship, I personally think this would have been something withstand when the rest of the scene would stand united. But – as it always was – the scene itself is torn and busy with little bitching cat fights in the internet over ridicules things. The fucked up situation in Germany that led to Festival collapses and other cancellations aren't exclusively the result of Antifa endeavors, although That is annoying enough already. Its the failure of the scene, where people who should at least there stand together fight each other and fueling the illogical hate machinery of the political correctness fraction. As I do not participate on any internet gossip and pitty war bullshit I give myself the freedom to ignore it.
CR: What memories you have of your visit to Latin America years ago, so we have seen very good moments with the fans, others where the tension predominated especially when the band plays and suddenly the police arrived to cancel the concerts, from there hell was unleashed with the fights. What has been the best and the worst concert for you of those days? ASH: The finest moments in my live career I had in Latin America and therefore I ill always be grateful. I released the “Black Metal manda Hijos de Puta” live album in respect to the Latin American fans. A lot of emotional bonds connects me to some Fans in Latin America that led me even to their graves where I paid my respect.
CR: As it has been for you to make that special tribute to the fans of Latin America Black Metal “Manda Hijos de Puta”. Fans are an important part of the life of each band, they collect tapes, vinyls, CDs, and the concerts are the fans that follow them from the beginning and the new fans that begin to know them. How has it been for you to meet people who are united with your music? ASH: I am doing usually not well around people and I avoid contact or encounters as best as I can. But meeting individuals who have a special connection to NARGAROTH and who let me feel the importance of my music in their live is a strong, warm and humble feeling. I touches me.
CR: What is the formula for Nargaroth to survive the current so competitive times? ASH: I don't know. I just do what I want and what I feel. Maybe this authenticity makes NARGAROTH surviving. On the other hand, even though it might be a competitive time (what I don't feel as I don't participate on all the scene and business circus), the big number of bands and releases doesn't mean automatically a certain amount of quality. We live in cheap times that doesn't create anything of value. No matter where you go. Everything is cheap made or only disguised as quality...made in China.
CR: For you what is the best album of your career that you can feel proud or that marked you in an important moment of your life? ASH: I can’t tell that. All have its place and its value.
CR: Many fans prefer the band's early albums such as “Herbstleyd” or the classic “Black Metal ist Krieg (A Dedication Monument)”, others prefer more recent albums like “Prosatanica Shooting Angels” or “Jahreszeiten”. Have you had fan feedback about these comparisons in Nargaroth's story? ASH: I get of course feed backs to my albums and also how some people see the albums in comparisons. You see the above mentioned phenomenon with almost all bands that do exist for a while. Some prefer the old stuff over the new, and younger fans more the recent quality over the old basement sound demos. People who only know “Black Metal ist Krieg” – at best only the song – are from no importance to me.
CR: Many current bands from the extreme scene around the world look at Nargaroth a great influence by its sound, perhaps some young person who saw them in some concert decided to follow its steps with its own bands. What do you think about it? ASH: It makes me feel appreciated and to a certain extent proud to leave my footprint in this art.
CR: What is the vision you have for Nargaroth in the next few years in the extreme metal scene? ASH: Hanging in there as long as I can or want, addressing willing listeners with my music and ignoring as well as rejecting popular developments and ridicules social demands. Means: I continue and keep doing with what I always did.
CR: What words do you want to send to Nargaroth fans who read this interview in both Central America and Latin America and the rest of the world? ASH: Thanx for reading all this and for the support by getting original merchandise. Ignore the mainstream, ignore the press. Inform yourself alternatively and stay metal.
CR: The last question: In a word or phrase, how would you define Nargaroth on the world metal scene? ASH: The part of you, you want to deny.
CR: The best of luck for you Ash on this new page for the band and many are waiting from now the new album of the band! Black Metal Manda Hijos de Puta!!
We thank Ash infinitely for the time granted in this interview and the opportunity to share with the fans in Latin America and in other countries of the world of the future plans of the band.
