Nebelhorn A Perfect Lesson in Viking Culture
In our scene around the world there are bands that do conceptual works based on literary works, sagas and tributes to writers that have been influential in several generations, without leaving out the traditions of several countries, in which culture and myths have been object of inspiration for many bands, and one of them will share its origins in this special interview for Conexión Rock Radio.
We present from Germany to Nebelhorn, a band that has in its history 3 albums and an EP. At the moment the band is in promotion of its new work called Urgewalt, and that for our protagonist the expectations remain in high as what happened with his previous delivery Fjordland Sagas.
We speak with its founder and composer and multi instrumentalist Gordon Schuricht, better known as Wieland who we will share in this episode about the struggle he has had with Nebelhorn over the years and the personal satisfaction of how his work is beginning to be valued. by own and strangers in a world that needs to know about the proposals both in music and in culture.
Conexion Rock Radio: Wieland I am Johonny Gonzalez of Conexion Rock Radio from Honduras, Central America, an honor to have you here in this special interview for our audience that you want to know about the music and history of Nebelhorn. Welcome! Wieland: Thank you very much Johonny! You too!
CR: Start the interview in congratulations for the launch of Urgewalt, your third album. What are your expectations with fans from around the world? Wieland: Thank you and, well, of course I hope they will like and enjoy it! Also perhaps realize how much passion, hard work and patience this album includes. I went through hard times during the completion... Also I hope, that some serious support from the listeners will happen in the future. Nebelhorn is a soloproject without any Record-label as support or backup...free and independent music as I think it should be in every music genre. If the listener isn´t willing to support, Nebelhorn will stop...It´s the natural way of giving and taking. You get what you support, so please don´t copy, rip, or download it illegally...
CR: If Fjordland Sagas was a much acclaimed album, the new one has the challenge of overcoming it. How could you define Urgewalt in your own words? Wieland: It´s always a personal challenge for me to make things better in every part of live, and this is also an essential part for me while creating music. But especially at at the creation of music, it´s a process that “just happens”. This means I am doing what I think feels good and right and I am happy if it feels even more intense, more finished and balanced on the grade of relation: emotion to lyrics to music... I fall that fits, this is the time when a new album sees the light, not earlier...
CR: Between this new and Fjordland there is a difference of 10-11 years. What happened to Wieland at that time? Pause with the band? New ideas? Wieland: Hardcore short version of the 10 years? Divorce, moved, found new love, moved, flight forward to study in Frankfurt for game design, which also completed under great strain, moved, organize crowdfunding → failed, sought job in the games industry → failed, various hardworking jobs made for little money, fighting for improvement of the working conditions for all workers...→ fired, or got out again ... 2. Crowdfundig → success, mini-job was fun → success, got fired from mini-job through "financial optimization measures", recording start of “Urgewalt”, during the recording, separation from my deeply loved girlfriend ... Enormous support by good friends and family (thank you!) helped me to get over all this mess... So, in many ways this has become a "hard" album ...
CR: We know that literally you have been in charge of everything in the process of production and composition of this new album. Previously you worked with session musicians. What decision motivates you to do things alone? Wieland: Freedom! Ulitmate freedom of doing music without any restrictions... no “it has to sound like that”, “it has to be finished on this date”, “you can only work with this amount of money to realize it”, “you´ve got to take our recording studio” or “we own the rights, so you cant make new cds, even the listener demands it, it costs money!” shorty: free from the “all your base belongs to us” tactics due to contracts from the record labels.
CR: Currently the album was released independently. Will you look for a record label that will support you or will you continue working with Skoll? Wieland: Skoll-Records was a label created by me. I also had the Idea to support “free bands” due to the decision of the listeners (early crowdfunding) I sadly had to close it down because of lack of money and lack of interest in general to this idea...it´s that simple...
CR: Bands that only have one person as in the case of Nebelhorn is easy or difficult to do this in the studio? Wieland: I personally think it´s easier. :) There are session and guest musicians too, and it´s always a pleasure to work with such professionals!
CR: Let's talk a little about the history of the band. Nebelhorn is formed between 2003-2004 in Germany. How was the idea of form a band that talks about Viking Culture themes come about? What inspired you to do these lyrical themes? Wieland: The Edda and various history and nonfiction books with archaeological background have always fascinated me. In my opinion, this is the "factual part" of Nebelhorn's lyrics. The "emotional part" comes from my experiences of feeling, as well as from the recognition of circumstances and processes in the environment. The result is the stories that are found in the texts beyond the Edda and mythology. Furthermore, I was sonicated with Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, and more by my parents! : D moviescores as well. Certainly influences from the medieval world had also an effect on me. Today I have a very wide range of genres that I enjoy listening to often. Everyone has their own charms for me.
CR: In your point of view as a musician like you could evaluate the evolution of Nebelhorn has had from its first days until today? Wieland: It may surprise you, but ...I can´t quite explain it. It just happens... feelings, the point of view during the time of composing and texting...influences that are surrounding me, the chat with the listeners and other people... it’s a natural evolution, not a pushed or calculated one...
CR: What is your perception of the bands that speak of Nordic Mythology in the world metal scene? Anyone would think that it is a perfect history lesson! Wieland: It would be very important to make a difference between mythology and archeological facts there is much heroic pathos “delivered” out there. After all, the listener decides what’s more important for him/her. Just taking what’s presented, unreflected, unquestioned... or doing research on their own how many facts are in the fiction in “their” bands lyrics.
CR: With 3 albums and an EP do you have plans in the future to record a live album? Or do you see in Nebelhorn a band that applies more in the recording studio?
Wieland: Definitely recording studio :) Live is a “No!” , for several reasons ... I'm far from what's called an “Entertainer”. It would be horrible for me to recite the songs, as much as I love them and they are a part of me, over and over again. When I finish an album, I would like to get emotionally immersed in the next work ... I'm also extremely demanding and the current circumstances and conditions what a livegig would “give” to the listeners ... Explaining that would fill evenings. ;)
CR: What is the vision you will have with Nebelhorn in the future? Are you seeing the possibility of having musicians in the band or do you think that doing things alone has been perfect for you? Wieland: Nebelhorn will go on like this :) the music should stand more in front than my persona...I want to bring out a new album for shure! But when this will happen, I don´t know jet, just starting with composing new tracks.
CR: Some words do you want to send in this special interview to our audience in Latin America and other continents that is sure to put due interest in the music of the band, and thanks for answering each of our questions for Conexion Rock Radio.
Wieland: Thank you very much for your time and ear and please enjoy the music! :) You´ll get what you support! ;) Please enjoy and share Nebelhorn and hornor it with a few bucks so that I can compose and produce even more albums for you... If that happens, I am more than happy! :)
CR: Wieland thank you for your time in this interview, the best of luck with Urgewalt, as well as Markus from Metalmessage for putting us an interesting band on our sonic radar, we hope to hear from you and Nebelhorn in the future! Wieland: Thank you very much for the good wishes! With pleasure Johonny! I feel hornored by your questions and given time! If the crowd fundings are supported properly, Nebelhorn can go
