Below we publish this interesting interview for all of you:
Conexion Rock Radio: Start this interview in congratulate you and your bandmates for the release of Samael's new album called Hegemony. I want to know your impressions about this new chapter in the history of the band and your expectations with the fans.
Vorph: We never set expectations or something like that. We just work, and you know it song by song and you try to find out what the album is going to be after the whole process, but you know it's like we do not have a plan or we follow something to build something, and then you do not have something and you have that feeling of being in a prison, and after all this time it was 6 years but usually one goes faster than that.
CR: Being one of the founders and main composers within the band in your own words how could you define Hegemony?
Vorph: It may seem like a cliché, but I really think this is the best thing we've done in years.
CR: Recently the band has incorporated a new bassist Thomas Betrisey better known as Drop. What details can you share about your entry to the band.
Vorph: I met him years ago and as a musician he has given his best in concerts, recently we have toured in the Czech Republic and then in Mexico. Originally he plays the guitar and comes from a band called Sybreed, and since we did not have a bass player in those days we suggested him to help us, but seeing how good the tour was, I asked him to stay as a permanent bassist with us and now our lineup it is complete.
CR: Let's talk a little about the history of Samael as a band. In the first days you played Black Metal, whose result was the creation of classics like Worship Him, Blood Ritual or Ceremony of Opposites. Here the curious thing was the evolution that the band has had in its sound towards Industrial Metal with electronic passages. The fans may or may not have received the change. Can you comment us because the decision to make this metamorphosis in your sound?
Vorph: Although the truth is I am very sincere, I am little to talk about these issues, but I will share with you and your audience your question. All this came naturally, starting with the sound of very legendary bands like Celtic Frost, Bathory or Venom to give you an idea. When we recorded Ceremony of Opposites the result was so good that we decided to incorporate the keyboard to our songs, opening new doors for a new musical spectrum in our sound, in the same way we experimented with computer programmed drums, the same happened with another album as it is Passage. This put us at a point of attraction to the industrial sound, bands like Ministry and Godflesh are an example of what we do now. Our experimentation is to maintain a balance between that sound and the distorted guitars and many people will say "this is not metal" and we appreciate the effort that these bands have contributed with their talent. The fun of all this was on the album Rebelion, there is a song called Static Journal where I was only programming the drums and the computer, and from there we defined that that would be our sound without losing our identity.
CR: Let's talk now about the new album, and 3 singles have come out, one of them is Angel Of Wrath that came out in lyric video, and that talks about the theme of justice, the animated production of this video reminds us a lot of Infragalaxia. What ideas are behind the single?
Vorph: For this single if you look at the lyrics of the song, it connects everything in the visual aspect of Samael's artistic and visual concept with his fans. This is already something traditional in us to release the first single and it is the heaviest album and that is what people expect from us to give them a first impression
CR: What do you think of the scene that is currently taking place around the world? Many bands of extreme metal look at Samael an influence because of the bands that have marked a before and after. What do you think about it?
Vorph: We are happy in some way comments like that, our contribution is sincere with those who appreciate the effort that we have spent years on the scene. Musically when I grew up and seeing all the things that we have done with my brother Xy have marked in my life and I've always liked to take that kind of metal somewhere else otherwise you know how to do something different with it. I really enjoyed the example of what really makes electronic music jazz and metal, so I think it's your own dressing and feel comfortable once you go out to play, that's an interesting feeling and at the same time it seeks to refresh and maintain a completely traditional sound, I think that is the formula for us as a band to continue in force. My advice to those bands that are dabbling in music we all grew up from young people listening or seeing those musicians and that have motivated us in our lives to be like them, that focus on what they want, be persistent and motivated with what one does.
CR: There are always fans who have followed them from the beginning and new ones that have been incorporated in recent years, it is always normal that there is an eternal discussion of which is the best album or the most underrated of the band. In your personal opinion how would you define that point?
Vorph: We appreciate the samples of the fans to know historically what is our best work, although on a personal level I am satisfied with the new album, definitely at a general level we have taken a step forward. If we put ourselves in a more generalized plane, I would say Lux Mundi, even though he is 6 years old, it was a job that was very well received and that is a classic album (laughs) without belittling others, and it has given us a more open exposition to new continents. CR: With Hegemony in circulation, and a tour that will soon start in several countries, do you think it is feasible to edit a live album?
Vorph: For now we have not thought about it since we are in promotion of the new album. We already have several confirmed dates for both the end of 2017 and 2018, we will have a lot of live activity for summer so we hope to reach several countries and enjoy a great time with the fans.
CR: For you, what would be the formula for a band like Samael to be valid to this day?
Vorph: The formula that we started doing at the musical level was Ceremony of Opposites, we always work as a team contributing ideas, sometimes one takes care of all things, and a process can go well or wrong depending on the time that is spent on This, in the case of Samael, I am in charge of the lyrics and then we discuss the arrangements of what the song will be at the end of the recording.
CR: What is the vision you have with Samael for the future?
Vorph: Continue making music, take our sound to all possible places and the most important thing is to spend a good time with everyone enjoying each of our concerts, and we hope to see them soon!
CR: The special question before finishing this interview, and I thank you for answering one of our questions to our readers in Latin America, it has been an honor for me to have talked with you. In a word or in a phrase, how could you define Samael on the world stage of metal?
Vorph: It's a somewhat complicated question (laughs) Although we were born in full swing of the extreme metal scene, and do not abandon our roots when we started in Black Metal, and still keep them in the transition to the Industrial. I only have one word in my mind: Metal.
CR: Vorph thank you for the time in this interview, we wish you the best of luck for you and your bandmates in this new adventure and we hope to talk in the future about the news that the band will do soon!
Vorph: Thanks to you for the interest in talking here and a greeting for the readers of your website and those who listen to you through your online radio! Was a pleassure to talk with you! We'll see you next time!
Special thanks to Nasrin Vahdani from the press team of Napalm Records for the facilities in conducting this interview, and to Vorph for the time granted on this occasion. And we dedicate this chapter to Samael fans around the world!
