Conexion Rock Radio: Christian, greetings from Honduras, Central America is an honor I will have here in this special interview for our audience of Central, Latin America and other continents who want to know the interesting news that Settle Your Scores has in 2018, welcome!
Christian Fisher: Thank you for the opportunity Johonny!
CR: Qué reacciones han tenido los fanáticos con el video Keep Your Chin Up y Your Expectations Down?
CR: Start the interview in congratulating the band for the release of their second album called Better Luck Tomorrow, which will go on sale in the next few days. We want to know what expectations the band has with their fans in this new chapter in their history.
CF: We’re hoping that the new album sells well. The reception from the singles we put out has been really good with the fans. Only time will tell though!
CR: If The Wilderness was a fun debut and it made them known on the sonic radar, with Better Luck it's a big step forward! In your own words how could you define this new album in relation to the previous work?
Better production? More ideas from your bandmates?
CF: This new album has a lot more diversity in terms of style when compared to The Wilderness. It’s mostly pop punk, but Ricky wrote songs with more elements of rock, metalcore, and other genres. Jeff also got involved with song writing for this release and wrote the song “Off and On.” We think the fans will see the growth we’ve had as a band when they hear this album.
CR: Better Luck Tomorrow marks the debut of the band with Sharptone Records. How was the contact between the band and the label to obtain a record contract?
CF: We had originally started this album as a 6-7 song EP and had been shopping it around to record labels. Shawn (SharpTone owner) heard the songs and was stoked on them. He said if we made a full length, he’d sign us. The rest is history! We’re stoked to work with such a great team of people. Nuclear Blast and SharpTone have been great to work with and we’re stoked for the future.
CR: Something that will draw attention will be the cover of the album, a black cat, salt thrown, someone walking under a staircase, a broken mirror, a crow, and in the background we look at a rainbow with a pot of gold, a unicorn and rabbits. The perfect definition of good and bad luck, someone in the band is superstitious? (laughs) How was the idea of the cover and why the name of the album?
CF: The album art and album title came from this super trippy dream I had. The band had been discussing album concepts and I guess I must have had it on my mind before falling asleep that night. Imagine the album cover scene taking place on a city street, and that was the exact dream that I had. As soon as I woke up, I texted the band in our group chat and explained the whole thing. We agreed that it would be a cool concept and got the artwork made!
CR: For those who begin to know you for first time how was an interesting band like Settle Your Scores is born?
CF: The band was actually formed via Craigslist! Ricky and Caleb had split from their old band and had some demos from The Wilderness posted on the site. Pat, Jeff and I found their demos and auditioned to join the band. Somehow, we all ended up becoming great friends. If we ever have a band origin documentary made, it should definitely be called “Settle Your Scores: A Craigslist Success Story.”
CR: Many in the band see a promise that will give much to talk about in the coming years, what perception you have of being considered a new generation band and looking to conquer several audiences?
CF: That’s awesome that people see promise in us. We come from a generation that kind of bridges the gap between the old music industry and the new music industry. Back then, you had to grind way harder to get your music out to people. The internet wasn’t completely mainstream yet, so discovering and promoting bands meant going out to shows and trading demo CDs at the mall. Now, anyone’s music can be accessed at anytime via streaming and social media. I think we mix that grind of old-school networking and new-school Internet stuff. We want to be accessible and enjoyed by as many audiences as possible!
CR: What reactions have the fans had with the video Keep Your Chin Up and Your Expectations Down? Very good idea to talk about how the internet ruins relationships when someone gets bored of a face-to-face conversation, takes out the phone and chat without paying attention, are there plans to release new singles for the new album?
CF: A lot of our ex girlfriends seem to think the video is about them, but it’s actually based on an episode of the Netflix show Master Of None. We have our second single, Zero Hour, out right now as well. There might be a third one dropping right before the release as well.
CR: SYS has plans to do some tour soon in Latin America? Definitely here you would win many fans!
CF: We would love to! We don’t have any concrete plans yet, but it’s definitely a goal in the near future.
CR: What message do you want to send to those who have read this interview, and surely from now on they will be new fans of the band, and again thanks to you for answering our questions on Conexion Rock Radio.
CF: I want to thank anyone who took the time to check out the band or this interview. Without the support of fans, old and new, Settle Your Scores wouldn’t have been able to get this far. Also, a huge thank you to Johonny for having me!
Christian thank you for the time in this conversation, send my regards to the rest of the band, in the same way to Loreen for putting an interesting band like SYS on our radar in Central and Latin America, and the best of luck with this album that without doubt they have a winner in their hands!
Special thanks to Loreen Valier for her help in conducting this interview, as well as to Christian Fisher for his time in answering our questions in this special report.
