Conexion Rock Radio continues in their International Interviews offering a tour around the world, and invited several bands to share their music, stories and future plans for their fans, and in the case of our guest band in this interview is not the exception! We have talked with the Voice and Founder of the band SAXON, the charismatic Biff Byford to share the good impressions that his new album called Thunderbolt has received and that it is edited via Silver Lining Music (previously this label was known as UDR Music), and Many of his followers look on this album as one of the most anticipated releases of this year. Below we share our interview with Biff about this new work and some interesting aspects in the history of Saxon:
Conexion Rock Radio: Biff I'm Johonny Gonzalez from Conexion Rock Radio from Honduras, Central America. It´s a great honor to have you in this special interview for all the Saxon fans in our region and in other continents. Welcome! Biff Byford: Thank you Johonny!
CR: Start the interview in know was has been for you and your bandmates the very good reception that fans from several parts of the world have given to the new work of the band called Thunderbolt via Silver Lining Music. Tracks like Thunderbolt, Nosferatu (The Vampire's Waltz) and Predator are perfect to be played live. BB: Yes, we've been playing those tracks on tour, plus They Played Rock And Roll, Secret Of Flight, Sons Of Odin - and the fans know the words already - we could see them singing along with us - great!!! Live, all these songs have been really well received.
CR: In your own words how could you define Thunderbolt in the interesting story of Saxon and the great contribution that Andy Sneap has made in the production? BB: Thunderbolt is a natural step along from Battering Ram - they are both pretty heavy albums, but still melodic - that's important to us. Working again with Andy was a natural thing to do I think - he's brilliant to work with, he pushes us to play the best we can, and we have a lot of fun, which I think is important when you're working hard during the recording process - music-making should be enjoyable! His knowledge of recording techniques, his sounds... - what can I say? - superb! And he understands us as a band - he knows the power we put out live, how we sound, just basically this beast called Saxon!!! Other producers think they know us - Andy definitely does!
CR: Many fans say that in each album the band seeks in make high quality works over the years. If Battering Ram was a great album this new has exceeded expectations. What do you think about it? BB: We're all really pleased with the result - we are all our own biggest critics and we never let anything go that might be less of a standard that we constantly strive to keep - everything we write has to be the best we can do. And we always try to make each album better than the previous one - I honestly think that we are getting better with each album - the songwriting and the playing are always improving in my opinion.
CR: Recently the band has shared a tour with Judas Priest who is also promoting a new album (Firepower) in the same way with Black Star Riders. What are your impressions of this interesting tour that has been very favorable for the band? BB: The tour with Priest was amazing - we've known them a long time and they're good friends - and the Black Star guys were great too - again, we've known Scott for a long time, Ricky too! Three great bands - what a package for the fans - I would have gone myself to have seen this - if I wasn't playing, ha!! For us, it meant hitting a lot of cities we hadn't played in for years. All three bands went down brilliantly every night - I wish the tour had gone on much longer - maybe extended it in the US, then gone around the whole world with it! Wow, that's a thought!!!
CR: The new generations of the band see in their discography as an important contribution to the metal scene around the world, literally a treasure where you find great albums like Wheels Of Steel, The Strong Arm Of The Law or Denim and Leather to mention some examples. What do you think about the years when the band was in Carrere? Many say that recording with this French label was perhaps a bad decision for the band because of the poor promotion that was given despite the fact that they made productions that were at the height of bands like Iron Maiden. BB: That's a difficult one - I think that the main problem was with the management - the US tour had us supporting Molly Hatchet - a total mis-match!! - Heavy Metal meets Southern Boogie - not a good choice! So I think things like that were bad for us. It's down to management to keep their eyes on the record company, to hassle them to support the band in every way possible, and I don't know if they did that.
CR: How about the current relationship with former band members Oliver Graham and Steve Dawson and with which both parts went to court fighting for the rights of the name of the band, and of course the result: you won the rights for keep the name and other important things.
BB: It is quite a while ago, everything is great now as it is and we don’t look back, we are still here, enjoying what we are doing and playing and releasing Saxon albums … We still have fun, the fans wants us – this is all that counts
CR: In 2019 the band celebrates 40 years of existence with 22 albums that prove that The class of '79 still rocks! Are there plans for some special celebration? Reissues? What details can you share? BB: We will for sure do something, we are just talking about what we could do and try to make plans. Nothing has been finalized yet but something will be coming...
CR: For you what could be the best album and the most underrated in the history of Saxon? BB: Each album has a special place in my heart - I couldn't possibly choose one above any others - they all have their own identity, their own memories that I can relate to in my career.
CR: Will have the Central and Latin American audience the chance to see the band in a tour? BB: The Thunderbolt tour will be continuing this year and into 2019 so hopefully you will get a chance to see us - it's all up to the promoters in each country - email them!!! - Demand to see Saxon!!!
CR: What words do you want to send to those who read this special interview, and thank you for the time to answer our questions for Conexion Rock Radio. BB: As I always say, thank you to all our fans - we really appreciate your support, whether its buying the albums, coming to shows etc - we never, ever forget that it's you who have put us where we are and, again, thank you so much - hope to see you on tour! And many thanks for inviting me Johonny to do this interview!
CR: Biff we wish you the best of luck for you and the rest of the band with Thunderbolt and we hope to see you soon on a tour of our region, for me it has been an honor to spread the word of a great band like Saxon in the worldwide metal scene! Long Live To The Eagle!! BB: Thank you Johonny, and all the very best to you!!
