ANDRE MATOS
The Immortal Master of Rock Conexión Rock Radio in its international interviews brings to all our readers in Central, Latin America and the rest of the world a special interview about a very special person and who for many is considered one of the most privileged voices that rock and metal both in Brazil, as in the rest of the world, has seen the light, and that it has left a legacy whose mark will be indelible, and that will be a great influence for new generations of vocalists around the world. This time we establish contact with Brazil, and that is where we talk with Anderson Bellini (Director), and Thiago Rahal Mauro (Producer and Writer) who provide details of the release of the documentary Maestro Do Rock, where the life of Andre Matos is retrospectively addressed (1971-2019) both in his family life and in the musical where he has garnered a great amount of recognition since his days in Shaman and the world consecration with Angra, and of his interesting facet as a soloist where he has also appeared as a collaborator and guest. for other bands, and that at the time of his death in June 2019 many musicians and producers from various continents lamented his loss, calling it a great blow to the scene, which is compared to great characters such as Lemmy or Ronnie James himself. In this report you will learn the reasons why these two music lovers and at the same time friends of Andre decided to do something in his memory as a tribute, of the guests that appear in this documentary that will be released in September 2021, and that will coincide with the month of his birthday, of the production process the memories and experiences that for the viewer will have mixed feelings when seeing the large number of memories and especially seeing a character that over time has earned on his own merit the affection and respect of own and strangers around the world. We invite you to take a seat, get some beers, put together a playlist of Angra, Shaman, from his solo project and let's give a standing ovation to the memory of Andre Matos: The Immortal Master of Rock Conexión Rock Radio: Anderson, Thiago, happy day from Honduras, Central America, I extend my best wishes that you are well at home.
It is an honor to speak with you and make for our readers this special report dedicated to the life and legacy of a great person like Andre Matos, welcome! Thiago Rahal Mauro: Hello Johonny, greetings from Brazil, a great joy to break borders and talk about Andre in this interview that you have organized, Anderson Bellini: How are you Johonny, like Thiago, very grateful for your interest in talking about this great project that we have soon to launch for Andre's fans around the world. CR: We started this interview with you to find out how it has been to face this situation there in Brazil, and especially in the production of this project dedicated to Andre? AB: For me it has been an important matter because I have been a huge fan of Andre Matos, and I have attended each of his shows since the beginning of his career, and we have done a lot of work together, and it was an honor to have worked with him in the past. I am an audio visual producer, and when I started working in this career I was thinking of doing a documentary project, but I never thought of doing something about the life of a person, a band, a situation that I never thought would happen later. . When I started with the idea of doing a project like this, and I began to ask myself: why not make a story about that person I knew long ago as Andre. That was something natural, and I decided to prepare something about that person who inspired my life and that of others in bands like Viper, Angra, Shaman, and who as a soloist had the magic of him, he was very special with his music. And considering the moment in which we historically live, it is more than worthwhile to do this project. CR: Let's talk about this documentary that will be released in September 2021 and called Maestro Do Rock, which is an artistic biography of Andre Matos. What are his expectations with this project that will be received by everyone with open arms?
TM: We are currently continuing the editing process, since we are reviewing many interviews, and we do not know where we will launch it or on what platform the final product will be released. Something is certain, the release date of the documentary will be September 14, 2021, we are reviewing many things to be able to include them in the material such as audios, photographs and videos from personal archive. We want to pick out the best moments in Andre's life before he joined Viper, his childhood, and how he would start singing in those days. AB: There will be beautiful things in the content, how he was born, when his parents started a family and decided to live in Sao Paulo and when a young Andre began to learn about rock and roll and playing an instrument, especially the piano. Although in those days he was not supposed to be a singer, but as time went by he met the Viper boys and when they saw him with his long hair they thought he had an excellent image to be a singer in the style of Bruce Dickinson, and they invited him When he joined the band, Andre was surprised by that even though he only knew how to play the piano and not sing (laughs), the band told him that he had that visual appeal and the merits to be a vocalist, and thus a story would begin. interesting that it would lead to other great projects such as Angra and Shaman, and that the world did not know anything about him when he would start in this world of music at the age of 17, and in the documentary things will appear that have never been seen from his family life, his father, his mother, his grandfather, and we will put all those things in the documentary. And we decided to call the documentary Maestro Do Rock, and when the idea of the name came out, we all considered it very appropriate to the legacy that Andre left over the years. CR: Regarding the content of the documentary, we want to know how long it will last, and if you have contemplated showing it in cinemas or releasing it on DVD worldwide?
AB: The general idea of the documentary is that it is not like a movie, but rather that it is a series that we will divide into several chapters around his life, that is our intention and focus it directly as a biographical series. We consider that doing something for 2 hours is something very short for us (laughs), since we have many things to talk about Andre, and seeing all this our decision is to do everything based on a series composed of 15 to 18 chapters with a duration of 14 minutes with a complex tour of his life, his family and his encounter with music with the different bands he has worked with during that time, and we want to give a complex approach to his different timelines so that people enjoy all the content that we will offer once the editing process is finished, and leave open the possibility that they can see it on a platform, or also that they can obtain it in physical format. The idea of all this is that people from all over the world can see it. We want to make one thing clear: we do not seek to profit from this, we do not need money, and if there is an opportunity to get some funds we want to give them to an organization that cares about the care and protection of animals. Andre would like us to do that. CR: We know that Andre gave the go-ahead for you to start documenting his life with interviews and concerts, in June 2019 surprised the world with his sudden death.
Did you ever think about stopping the project or seeing what would happen next? TM: We know that Andre has always cared about taking care of his son since he lives in Sweden and after several years of activities and tours with Shaman we have talked with him to see if it is possible to do a job where he collects the best moments of his career As a soloist, although he spent time with his family, he focused on doing other things that were not related to metal such as classical music, and for him one of his dreams was the release of soundtracks. We know that with Shaman he had material prepared, only it is not known when all that will come to light, because that special project was in talks, but all that stopped abruptly when he died. CR: Anderson, as Thiago commented recently, Andre had a lot of material ready, and many of us hoped to see him again together with Angra or again with Shaman before he died?
Did you know of anything special for these two bands? AB: We have many things prepared, among them a song that was not released, and that will be released when the documentary is broadcast. The song is called Life Goes On, and it will be part of the documentary's soundtrack and will feature posthumously released material consisting of three new songs in total. And things will appear that had never been seen before Andre that was not published in many years, and that people will be interested when they hear that and much more, that is why the fascination of knowing his life is one of the greatest expectations that we offer for with this project where many good things will be clarified. CR: I remember that in those days we did a special coverage in El Salvador and suddenly the news about Andre echoed on the networks, and that impacted us all, and the tributes around the world were many in his memory, the bars they sounded the music of Angra or Shaman, it was very nice to see how they remembered it with joy singing their songs like Carry On, Nothing To Say, Lisbon, Fairytale among others. What impressions did you have in Brazil when you saw the large number of bands that also paid tribute? I think that, if my memory does not deceive me, in Rock In Rio of that year there was a special moment for Andre AB: That's right. The people of Sepultura dedicated Carry On in memory of him, and they played a part of the song on his show. Eloy Casagrande is the current drummer of Sepultura, and he played with Andre years ago in his solo band, and the band formally requested his family to pay him a special tribute in his show at Rock In Rio, since Andreas (Kisser) and Andre were good friends, and many people around the world made many tributes in their own way, expressing themselves with great affection of how Andre, his voice and his music, and in the bands where he has participated, he had played each of his lives, and seeing This type of initiative made more than one of us smile. It was very special and beautiful at the same time. For us Andre is like our Michael Kiske, Geoff Tate or Bruce Dickinson, for that reason people have had a lot of respect and affection for him wherever he went. CR: Regarding the material in this documentary, Andre's family contributed things from their personal collection.
Has it been easy or difficult to get all of that and put a general context on his life from his inception on Viper to his last days as a soloist? TM: At first it was not easy, but Andre's family helped us by selecting the best photographs from his personal archive, while Anderson gave him several video files showing special moments such as a Christmas reunion or enjoying the World Cup as a family. of 1994, and the intention is to generate a balance between the normal person of the family, the musician, the artist. For that reason, the entire process was decided to use scripts that would help us locate that content and other things throughout the documentary. When Andre died we decided to contact the family and ask for their authorization to do this project and to continue it until it was completed. Days later I called his cousin Eduardo, and he agreed with it, he supported us at all times when we began to organize this whole project, and we knew that at home they had many things recorded on video. His mother had a camera and recorded every family moment in those days, every party, every special gathering, Christmas, New Years, Mother's Day, and Andre was a teenager back then. And she had a lot of tapes in storage and she sent them to my house. I had a lot of fun watching all that material, but I never thought what things I would find in those videos and the family trusted us, we decided to do all the transfer from analog to digital format, and for example there he appears dressed as Santa Claus in a red suit , or when he completed his musical studies at the University. Seeing this kind of thing far away that is a hard work of hundreds or thousands of hours to convert all that to digital awakens that interest and that fascination of what Andre did in life, and I think that here both producers and fans will see interesting points in the material, and we can only tell you that all that will literally blow our minds (laughs) CR: I don't know if both of you digitized all that material at home that you felt when you saw Andre in those videos? Joy? Sadness? I think when they were in the development of the documentary they were very nostalgic to see those special and personal moments of Andre
AB: The truth is that happens every day, in interviews, in videos, or those who come close to us especially listen to Andre's music. I can tell you that all the audio and video elements that appear in this documentary is the product of many nights at home with my computer editing things, and I have mixed feelings and sometimes I am very happy to see those things and sometimes I am sad, and I cry. Because you can realize that he is no longer here with us, and as fans we are left with that feeling of wanting a new album, a new DVD, concert, or a new tour, and you feel that great emptiness that is there latent, it is something that to this day you do not assimilate. When I wrote to Thiago and told him that he could not believe that he already died, that he is no longer here and that he has left. In my heart, Andre is so alive. Because in this small room where we are doing the edits he is present. The boxes, photographs, computer wallpapers, the VHS videos to digital ... it's very sad for us, but we do it in a relaxed way for the fans, their family and those who in life appreciated it very much, and all that becomes in happiness in this little space. Andre will fill a void that many have in his hearts and souls, and we believe that with this work we will bring happiness to fill that void space. Thiago and I have that commitment to all of them, and the first thing is to leave sadness behind. TM: It has been very difficult for me as a person and as a fan I have supported it for several years, and when you asked this question it was perhaps the most difficult to answer in an interview, especially yours Johonny. In the development of the documentary I have felt how spiritually Andre has seen us work very hard here, it has been difficult, but at the same time easy to assimilate all this situation, because I have been to his concerts and I have lived several important moments in the life of he. We could have made a documentary about bands like Led Zeppelin or The Beatles for the simple reason that no one was there, we weren't even born in those years (laughs), and those of us who were lucky enough to meet him have been to every concert buying his records, and we have worked on several tours, while backstage we tried to make sure everything went well, I have lived close to his house and have known him for several years, I always greeted him on the street, and I do not want to be selfish because all this I have kept alone for me how to be good memories and experiences. And it would not be fair for his family and his fans especially to teach and share those special facets in his life as a person, a musician and as a father. And since he died I have felt the need to wake up every day during these two years to complete something that for me has been a promise in his memory. CR: Everyone thinks that Andre lives in each of the fans and the people who appreciated him in life, to the point of considering him as someone who influenced and changed the lives of many, for that reason the launch of this documentary will literally be a celebration of his life and that it will last for a long time.
TM: Fortunately, many people were able to know about that humble stage of Andre and he left a mark on those who had the opportunity to speak or make a friendship with him. Because he taught the difference of what music is like and how to appreciate it. Before Andre arrived we all listened to Hard Rock, or Rock in general, nobody listened to classical music or Brazilian music. He was very open about teaching these musical genres to many people and many fans, and for that reason there is a more varied criterion for liking music, and that led to many of us opening our minds to that, and listening to albums like Angels Cry or Holy Land was something completely new to us. I never had the opportunity to listen to other types of music and I felt that he literally lived in a small box listening only to rock and roll. I think and consider that rock and roll is very good, but it is not the only musical genre in the world, there are countless things to hear and know, and Andre was the person who showed all this to several people from his early days, of his time in Angra, and you can enjoy any kind of music. That is why he earned the affection and respect of an entire community, where he began studying at school and at the university. His career is an important legacy that has illuminated the lives of many. CR: We know that the documentary is self-financed with its own resources and that they have proposed a crowfunding campaign so that this project can be carried out. How has the response of the people been in these strange circumstances?
AB: Many have approached and expressed their interest in financially supporting the documentary to become a reality. People have given a great response towards this project as we don't need this to put it in a company or get it to a director or a manager. We have had a lot of interaction with them on the networks and we comment that they are our bosses and associate producers. For example, they ask us to do an interview to Germany, you only need to pay someone in that country to do a video interview, or someone who understands the law and who can legalize that all this process is done in a transparent way. All this was done thanks to the help of the fans, we have also received material from tours in Europe years ago. The meaning behind the production is that we seek to do this for the fans, it is something dedicated to them, since they are the ones who have bet on the project by investing their money, and we do not want third parties to get involved and say that this should not to appear or that we must change something. We seek to project the truth about Andre's life, and prevent a company or production company from seeing this as a way to get money or build a brand. These kinds of things, what they cause in the long run is a waste of time and money, and that this could affect future projects and we do not want that. CR: Special guests appear in the documentary who testify to the talent and quality of person that Andre was in life.
Names like Kai Hansen, Alex Holzwarth, Sascha Paeth, Rafael Bittencourt, Luis Mariutti, Andre Bastos, Kiko Loureiro, Blaze Bayley among others, what impressions have you had of the stories that these guests have of Andre? (laughs, tears, mixed feelings) AB: When we started with this idea, we said that it was best to have as many guests as possible within the documentary, in the end we had about 100 guests (laughs), and they share many anecdotes with Andre. There will be many moments of joy, love, tears, many hours of interviews that we have had to select the best of each guest, there will be curiosities and interesting things that both I and Thiago have discovered during the cutting and editing process. Seeing all this we were both with an expression on our faces with a "WHAT?", And we thought "is this real?", There will be many urban legends or myths among the fans that perhaps were published in magazines or radios many years ago, And now we have the opportunity to bring this closer to people, and many will be fascinated to hear from the mouths of our guests those curious and funny testimonies (laughs), that is where we will all find out if it is real or not. TM: We spoke with Andre 3 months before he died we had the opportunity to address various things about Viper and Angra. He preferred that the musicians be interviewed first, so we could draw a balance between the musicians and guests who gave testimony about Andre's musical work, and of course the character himself speaking from his perspective on his life. AB: Here is to see the two sides of the same coin, as Thiago commented, we spoke 3 months before his death, and we talked about things and ideas that were going to appear in the project, we have asked him for some points that may be delicate, or merely personal things that may be private, and his response has been a merely silent posture and suddenly I only mention: No Futures (laughs) CR: Thiago, seeing the large number of guests that will appear in the documentary, for you who has been the most accessible and the most difficult person for an interview?
TM: The most accessible was Sascha Paeth. Since he has helped us a lot since we started the process, and previously an email was sent formally inviting him to participate with us, since he has been a producer of several Angra albums, and at the same time a very close friend during his stay. in Germany. When we started selecting the people to interview, we decided that Sascha should be the first. The most difficult was with Charlie Bauerfeind, even though he has his commitments as a producer an email was sent to him, and in a way things with him were somewhat complicated for an interview. CR: Anderson, seeing all these interesting things that will appear in this documentary video, have you thought about making a biographical book based on Andre's life in the future?
AB: There is currently a biographical book published some time ago called The Heavy Metal Maestro, which was only released in Brazil, although it should be mentioned that seeing the demand for such material, versions were made in several languages and it was officially released in November 2020 through the publishing house Estetica Corta. Curiously, the family asked us at the time we were filming the documentary, and they told us that if there was the idea of a book or if there would be some problems to do that, we answered that it would not cause any inconvenience in the production, and we thought that Both the book and the documentary would be an interesting complement, and we consider that this would not cause problems with the writers, since we all talk about one thing in common which is the life of Andre Matos, and for the general public that is very good. For us it is an interesting expectation that many want to see that the book is based on the documentary, so people who have seen the video and who have the book can literally imagine everything in reading, and we are definitely not opposed to a launch a idea like this. CR: Once this project is finished, do you think of making more documentaries dedicated to other bands there in Brazil?
TM: For now, the production will focus only on the life of Andre Matos, although we are contemplating that if the documentary is a success, we may consider working with an artist in the future. AB: Seeing all the material that we have edited, we will be uploading extra content to the YouTube platform once the documentary is officially released. About making another documentary we have several ideas, I and Thiago have friendly bands outside of Brazil, but for now everything would be a kind of secret, since there is nothing defined for now, although I can tell you that we are both fans of this band , and we are waiting for the moment to make a formal invitation to do this project, although we do not rule out anything to do another project in the future with a band from Brazil or another country. But everything will depend directly on the reaction of the people towards Andre's documentary video. In the documentary you will see him walking in the streets of a city, alone, but accompanied by a cameraman who has been accompanying him on tour, his name is Patrick, there they will see for example how after the show he walks through the center of Santiago (Chile ), curiously the band went back to Brazil and he stayed one more week in Chile. He and his cameraman traveled to various countries such as Chile, Argentina and Brazil, and Patrick has many videos of those trips, he seemed more like a kind of YouTuber (laughs) and has archives of the last 15 years of tours, and part of that material will appear in the documentary, and in the same way it will appear as extra content on the YouTube Channel, and it will be something nice for people, in addition, Andre was always interested in traveling and knowing those places, he had that fascination, and shared those impressions Through the camera of what that place was like, its people, its way of life, food, tourism, and history. He was like a kind of Jacques Cousteau and he liked to go to places where there were no people, only nature, literally alone in nothingness. He loved to go to the mountains or to primitive places in the interior of Brazil and write things on the rocks, he always loved to go to places where explorers have never been able to reach. We have many videos of those places where Andre has visited those places that are not very well known where he feels free and in contact with the earth, the water, the air, or that he rests on the edge of a waterfall. There is a part of the video that was used in the teaser of the documentary where someone asks him "how would you like to be remembered once you do not live in this world", and he answers that he is ready when that moment arrives, and there appears the singing a fragment of Fairytale and the effect of the echo in the mountains was something very special that was captured on video. CR: It will be very interesting to see all that documentary and enjoy it without anything or anyone bothering, for those who want to collect it, they have already told us that a DVD version will be released, but seeing all this extra content that will attract attention, they have planned to launch a future extended edition?
TM: The truth is there are intentions, although for now everything will be released digitally through the Netflix platform, since there is a negotiation agreement for the broadcast of the video on that channel, although we do not rule out later to see if we can make it more accessible to the people, of all the bad there are good things, we have plans to launch a CD with material that has not been published as Life Goes On for example, in addition to songs known to the fans, the idea is to release 3 or 4 songs unpublished, and we hope that together with the documentary that material is its official soundtrack. Although there will be extra material in the film, it is a somewhat difficult process and especially due to the legal and copyright aspects, although we want all this to be exhibited in cinemas, and if everything goes well within the plans, take the next step that is the release in physical (DVD) and digital format through streaming. But all this will depend on how people respond to everything once it is released soon. CR: Thiago, Anderson, what message do you want to send to all the people around the world who have read and enjoyed this special report, and I want to thank you both for the opportunity you have given us to make this humble tribute to memory. of a great person like Andre Matos?
TM: First of all, thanks to you Johonny for your interest in getting closer to us, and we invite people to follow us on our social networks, to learn more about this documentary, to celebrate life and the legacy that he has given. soul and heart through his songs either in Shaman, Angra and as a soloist in addition to his solo projects. Keep that flame alive! AB: As Thiago said before, let's keep Andre's memory alive, let them listen to his entire discography, remember him with much affection and admiration, and to you Johonny, thank you for this pleasant conversation from Honduras, it has been an honor for us to go far with you and talk about Andre's life and legacy to everyone, we are very grateful to you, and we hope that once the documentary is released it will be to your liking! A hug from Brazil, and our good wishes to all who take care of themselves and stay safe in their homes.
