A-Z

A-Z
Trial by Fire passed… The Beginning of a Great Story Ladies and Gentlemen… A new band appears on the horizon, where its members have the common objective of going as far as possible with their proposal and, of course, conquering those who are lovers of progressive metal. We present in this report from the United States the band A-Z, and that we talk this time with Mark Zonder, Drummer and the mastermind behind this project, who in 2022 will debut on a high with his self-titled album, which will be released on the worldwide sale on August 12 through the Metal Blade label. To make this effort possible, Zonder would surround himself with the cream of the scene, leading to one of the most interesting lineups in his career as a musician, resulting in the participation of Ray Adler, Viven Lalu, Joop Wolters, and Philip Bynoe, and that for those who know the trajectory of these interesting characters, they can see A-Z as the Dream Team of the progressive, which is a pleasant revelation this year. In this interview you will know all the details of how this project was born, of the experience lived in the recording process, about Zonder's musical career, and the future that he and his companions have contemplated in this new page in their lives where they see passed The Trial by Fire… At the Beginning of a Great Story Conexión Rock Radio: Mark, greetings from Honduras, thanks for the time you give us back home where we will share with our readers the interesting news that A-Z has coming soon for their fans, welcome! Mark Zonder: Hi Johonny, thank you very much for having me here, and very happy to talk with you today. CR: Thank you Mark, well we start with good news, and we have a new band appear on the map, A-Z will release on August 12 their self-titled debut through Metal Blade Records, by the way, congratulations this is a great release that will be shaping up as one of the favorites in the second half of this year.
What expectations does the band have with this first step in your career? MZ: My expectations like having 10 dollars in my bank account (laughs), those of us who work in the music business, love this or hate this might think that this band is version 2 of Fates Warning, although, on the other hand, For the many years that I have worked in the industry, I see this as the type of music that I love. I look at the CDs in my living room and I see everything I've done with various bands and especially the songs I've written over the years. All this is about conquering the audience at the first listen, we have to make the songs have that touch that lets you hook, to leave you trapped in their melody and lyrics so that people feel good about what we are doing. Now, if you haven't got it all and you need to hear it all a second time, something indicates we didn't do our job, that's fine, we're supposed to grab people's attention, which has to be uplifting so it can be liked by a larger group of people. people which can be translated into a large auditorium or even a stadium. We are not the type of band that will play for 50 people because they can see our performance, technique, and other things up close. Everything is done for a stadium configuration and festivals in order to reach a larger audience, that way people can enjoy the music and move away from the pessimism that we have experienced in recent months, especially due to the anxiety and losses that many families have experienced because in those days there was no cure to be safe from the pandemic. Now that things are changing we have tried to make songs that are addictive at first listen with great choirs and bring people together to enjoy and sing with us. We hope that it will be to everyone's liking, and especially those who like progressive, since in my view of things this album will be destined to have a lot of rotation at the mainstream level. CR: The context and objectives that the band has with this album are very interesting by the way Mark, many look at A-Z as a super group because you have high quality musicians, besides you there is Ray Adler well known for his work on Fates Warning, Vivien Lalu on keyboards, Joop Wolters on guitar (both play in Shadrane) and Philip Bynoe on bass who plays at the same time in one of your projects such as Slavior.
How did the idea of bringing together these talented musicians for this new project come about, who knocked on the door to make the initiative? You or Ray? MZ: It was all my idea from the beginning, that's why I put my money to produce the album, since many record companies don't have a budget for the vision that one wants when recording, so it was best to take my savings and doing everything the right way, you know, spending money to do certain things makes the whole process go smoothly and make sure that in the end the album doesn't sound like a demo or stuff a kid would do in art class. There the decision was at the right time and place, that was to take it or leave it. That was something big, fast and strong as if it was there all the time to be brought to light, and it was a matter of time for everything to take shape for people to comment when listening to it and give their impressions. The first musician whom I thought of summoning to this project was the keyboardist Matt Guillory, he expressed his interest in participating but his agendas meant that he could not be incorporated at the beginning of the process, despite living in the United States and managing budgets for the expenses. ended up stepping aside, that was the opportunity to call Vivien, and we started talking about what he had in hand and he agreed to participate, I've known him for a long time, especially in the high school days when We were listening to albums by bands like Chroma Key, Fates Warning, Warlord and all these different things. Then we would start with the drum tracks, and I would do many takes to be able to get my creative edge in the studio, I like to create songs where you can appreciate the capabilities of all the instruments, that way with Vivien we began to exchange ideas and I knew from that moment there was magic there, then the next one to appear on the scene was Philip, he is very familiar with my previous projects, as you mentioned he has alternated with me in Warlord and Slavior. When I called him for this new band, I was convinced from the first moment that he would be the bass player that I needed, and I would not doubt his talent, and he is probably one of the few guys in the world that you could trust your children, the keys to. my car, and my checkbook. He is just a great friend. Vivien and Joop have worked together for the last 20 years, and thinking about Joop was an easy decision, since we all know each other and have a common friendship. The big problem here was who would be the voice for the band, I had to audition between 15 to 20 singers, unfortunately all of them did not meet the expectations that the band needs. So I called Ray, and was impressed to see if he would take the call or not, even though he was off map with Fate Warnings I asked him if he was interested in joining, and the rest is history. With the whole band gathered, we started working on the songs and it was just a matter of arriving on time for the production deadline, perhaps at the time we didn't know if we could complete it, but it was certain that all the elements were there stored during all this weather. When things started to take shape I thought that this was all good, but then I thought that this was great that it exploded in my head, we were all excited because we were certain that we had something very big on our hands. CR: One question Mark, we know that Vivien and Joop live in Europe or currently live in the United States, I ask this because of the distance to work from one continent to another, or do you see that all this was handled with an agenda so that everyone can participate in the concerts that you will do soon?
MZ: Honestly, that would not be a problem because we would all meet for a reason, I must say that I am not in favor of bands meeting in a room to make a lot of noise and that situations arise that force us to spend time making ideas. . We are currently preparing ideas for what could be the second album, and we have always been in constant movement doing things up to 50 times until everything works out. When you're in the studio you can really hear what's going on, but in a live room sometimes it's very difficult because the noise is so loud that it doesn't work very well for us. We are professional musicians and we know how to face this type of challenge, since it is a task to sound good and learn the songs correctly basically, all this in a process of 2-3 days, and the main premise is that everything should sound good when It's time to perform at a concert. As I said, we are all professionals, that and other factors, especially due to distances, would not affect us at all. CR: What is your point of view that the music of many bands including A-Z has remained strong during these years of the pandemic, or do you consider that the music industry has a challenge that it has not yet been able to overcome?
MZ: The big problem here is that a lot of people who weren't really ready to record, they had a lot of difficulties because they couldn't go out and play live, and all of a sudden the labels use wrong strategies to make super groups and say “let's put this one together, and this other to make records while all this happens and we'll see what happens. Since the pandemic hit hard in the world, the record factories had serious problems manufacturing as they had serious delays, the advantage for us is that we had enough advantage to record and prepare everything, we took advantage of the time to release our singles and prepare more ideas for what would be a new material in the future. Those who know the business know that they must prepare themselves with several strategies so that these types of inconveniences do not happen to them. But in our case we are waiting for it to be August 12, which is the date that the album will be released, and we want to see people holding it in their hands so that they can enjoy the music and especially the album art that it comes with a 16 page booklet, and there are many references to the art of bands like Rush and Dream Theater, I consider this a beautiful piece of art that is impressive, and when people open the CD or especially the Vinyl they will appreciate the beauty that has been done in this aspect, and that's where people will say: this band is real, and we seek to create a change not only by putting a couple of nice songs on YouTube, but we seek to be a strong and real band whose members have experience of years and that those elements make that band special, I consider that we are not "the band of a single song" I think that our album is a very solid record and that is where we began to write this new history as musicians. CR: On this album we find great songs: Trial By Fire, The Machine Gunner, Rise Again, Run Away, At The Waters Edge or The Silence Is Broken, they are songs that people will enjoy at concerts, by the way, the production It is one of the most remarkable points, especially in the sound of the instruments and the drums. What impressions have you had with this process in the studio?
MZ: I took care of everything from the first moment, and that was my vision, it was like driving a bus, I had to put all the pieces together so that everything could work perfectly, an example of this is the videos. I had to have the advice of 8 engineers to know what the perfect mix could be for the album, as well as the cover art and merchandise that we were going to offer once we were on tour. Such a process could be endless, since there are many hours of work sitting at your computer exchanging ideas or doing interviews, and it is interesting to know what people think about the album, journalists from all over the world have expressed their opinion, and It's all part of the promotional campaign, as you know you have to get the material to these people, and that's part of the vision that began as an idea one day and later became a reality. CR: In your life as a drummer you have participated in many projects such as Warlord (sorry for Manowar but this band is a great contender), Spirits Of Fire, Graham Bonnet, Jim Matheos and Fates Warning where you recorded classics like Simetry, Inside Out and Parallels. Many consider that A-Z is the consecration of your career, what do you think of this?
MZ: I can tell you that Warlord may have been banned from the scene in those days, there are some funny stories and some not so funny ones. Warlord from the beginning was in direct competition with bands like Ratt, Poison and Motley Crue. We were completely different, which is why we were in the spotlight, implying that we were the favorites at the time, and it was what the world was looking for. All this happened at a time and in a place in my life, I love Bill and we had great times, we never fought or argued about our work in music, he never played a bad note and from my point of view I consider him the best I'm a musician, but my learning expanded the moment I started working with Fates Warning and Jim Matheos, you know the things I've learned along the way from a lot of people that I've loved and learned from them is about what to do and what not to do, right now everything is like a kind of pinnacle and it is probably the first time that I do something that is properly mine, that was about wanting to do something, or at least trying to do something. I've been in other situations with bands that I've worked with in the past with ideas that nobody wanted to try, so if you take a look at all the albums that I made years ago I'm a bit out of it, and it will always be a daily process that you learn and improve. , for example you are sitting on the drum kit and we start rehearsing based on normal bars or sometimes 8 bars, so the idea is to see what can be broken down and things start to flow to make songs listening to the opinions of your colleagues where they tell you "I don't know if that works with normal or double hype". There is a perception as a musician when you are outside or in the middle of a work situation within the industry or within your environment with your colleagues, the point here is that you must know how to listen and know the tastes of the audience, that is, when I record my drum parts and I think if what I play is good, or how the drums would sound with two speakers, knowing how to interpret the symbols to be able to play your parts in an effective way may sound a bit fun, but you try to give the public the definitive experience and for people to think and say this is great, I think this is the pinnacle of my career, I've played with high quality musicians, and now with something new we're getting very far through interviews and videos to then start our live tours, then the second album will come. This is a cycle, and I am very happy to come back again with something new. CR: In this tour that you will start soon Mark, do you plan to include songs from your previous bands in the setlist, or are you looking to play the album from beginning to end so that people know more about your proposal?
MZ: We'll play the album, that's for sure, but the idea is to sequence how it's going to flow for a live show. There are bands that debut with their albums and play them from beginning to end, but the idea is to find the high and intermediate points of the 11 songs to be able to play them live. There is no doubt about it we could play all the songs and we have discussed that previously. We could play some Warlord or Fates, people could enjoy it, but only in this project it's just me and Ray playing, we couldn't for example bring Jim, or people say find another guitarist to do something with Warlord , he wouldn't look at me doing that, I find it ridiculous, Bill was Warlord and he is irreplaceable because he had his vision, concept and ideas, and I supported him from the drums. Always between jokes we made things go well. But all that legacy is only for Bill, he gave a great contribution to the music of the band in those days. CR: I am curious about the album Mark, the Zebra that appears on the cover and your initials do not make any allusion to the band Zebra because of the backwards initials that would be Z-A (here my mind has conspired at that point)
MZ: The interesting thing about all that was that we were all together, but the name of the band was missing. I don't know if I really knew that everything was there contrary to Zebra, but suddenly I thought of something that started and something that ended, putting together the initials (Alder and Zonder) I thought that we covered different styles in music, and then the concept would emerge 20 minutes later, and everyone was wondering what is the name of the band, and the ideas began to flow back and forth, they quickly sent me the design of the album cover, and as you could see previously it is a work of art where you you are impressed We wanted to do something different that stands out on its own to prevent people from prejudging whether we're like a heavy metal band or that we're looking to fit in with superficial like Warriors of God, Stone Serpent, or things like that, for that reason A-Z looks to present something fresh and new to the scene, but from the moment they showed us the cover art (the Zebra eating an apple) we thought: this is very perfect that this image would be sold on T-shirts, I think that is something iconic, and many people at a great distance would buy a product like that. About the video when the Zebra animation comes on it's funny you say that because again when we're doing this we try to make sure everything works out we need to have something to separate us and every time someone watches a video I want them to see it as in a big movie, same thing at the beginning, same thing at the end, so I had a company that knows I had to go back and forth and back and back, and I thought okay, that's going to work, and I thought that would attract the folks, remember a million bands have videos and no one has a big budget to make great videos, everyone does it by hook and by crook. I thought it would be a great idea to brand the band so everyone remembers that it's kind of a Pixar-style animation with that lamp jumping at the start, and we thought this might fit for work like Big Lion or MGM, people remember that but Trial By Fire was just the video the idea is the concept behind it we tried to get casual footage of the guys playing in concert or doing their parts in their own home studios and just make a basic rock video . It's a very powerful song, so I knew where it could go in people's preference. We wanted to show what the band is really like, and we only appeared playing, and we looked at all that as the main point of the video. CR: Taking advantage of the good reception that the first two singles are now having and the imminent release of the album Mark, what is your favorite song that could be a candidate for an upcoming video?
MZ: It is not a state secret to know what videos we are going to release next, although each song on the album has its merits, the next video and what is Ray's favorite will be the track Stranded. CR: The final question: will A-Z be a permanent project? Are you looking to make more albums in the coming years? MZ: The band is now my main focus and priority, it's what I do all day, if Ritchie Blackmore called me to tell me to record an album or go on tour I would gladly accept, but A-Z is my occupation for now, since I'm giving it all the necessary time and other things can come from there, it's like having a wife let's call that in a certain way, and I'm driving the band so that all future goals materialize in the best possible way. CR: What message do you want to send to the people who have read this interview with you Mark, and thank you for the time you have granted us at home, may it be the beginning of many interviews that we have in relation to the great story that A-Z begins in 2022 and we hope to talk again in the future
MZ: First of all I want to thank you for your interest in what we are doing, I really appreciate your time and the questions you have prepared for the occasion. We hope to be able to tour soon in several Latin American countries, we plan to do something in Mexico, people will remember that years ago we played with Fates Warning in Tijuana, that was our first visit to Mexico, and we want to be able to visit not only that country, but several . My message to people is to enjoy this album as it has great melodies, voices and things that you will like at first listen, we know there will be many reactions and we hope to be able to organize tours very soon, a hug to all, take care at home and welcome to this new adventure called A-Z Thanks to Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey of the Metal Blade Records press and promotion team for their help in making this interview possible, and to Mark Zonder for spending time in this conversation.
