(Literalmente Al-Namrood significa "El No Creyente")
Al-Namrood A Emerging Force of the Saudi Black Metal
Conexion Rock Radio offers Black Metal lovers a very interesting band that has earned the respect of all its fans around the world for the fact that they are a band that live in a country that are restricted from their freedom of expression, and that at the same time for their anti-religious stance they are considered enemies in their own homeland, and sadly exposed to the death penalty, but far from being intimidated they continue from the underground, inconveniencing their adversaries, sending a loud and clear message: we are in resistance from the shadows!
We talked to Saudi Arabia with Mephisto, Multi instrumentalist and one of the masterminds of Al-Namrood, to find out in our interview report about their history and at the same time about the struggle they have waged against religious sectors, and whose response was the release of Ten Years of Resistance, which celebrate its first 10 years, and that many hope the band can offer us interesting albums in the future that many consider an emerging force of the Saudi Black Metal. Below we offer you our interview where our guest goes with a strong answer to our questions:
Conexion Rock Radio: Start this interview in knowing about the current situation that Al-Namrood has on the international scene, recently celebrated their first 10 years of existence as a band, and at the same time release a compilation called Ten Years of Resistance (a selection of tracks over this 10 years and remastered for this occasion) Not all the bands in a country like Saudi Arabia last for so many years despite being "considered" by the religious authorities as a threat to national security and religion, but despite the threats you continue with your music. How do you feel as part of the band going through a decade of spiritual aggression? Mephisto: We feel angry and hateful yet, we seek vengeance for the sake of injustice times of being cursed by the hands of doom for too many bloody years!
CR: We want to know about the reception that the international media and fans around the world given to their recent album called Enkar, many consider a highly successful experiment, especially in production and sound. What do you think about it? M: Personally, (HUMBABA, Vocals) think it is the best in comparisons with all the past LP since it shows influences of genres such as Uk82 Punk, Speed Metal, F.W.O.B.M at least as an attitude especially the Anarchy theme which was intentionally to piss off many people at what so called metal community. It was the most album that we have spoken out in more straightforward approach rather than the usual indirect messages approach which we’ve always delivered at the previous albums. Enkar, dealt with many political issues at our end, religions oppressions, human rights violation by XXXXX. More like (Fuck The System) kind of statement.
CR: Do you have plans for a new album for 2019 or 2020? M: The more problems and struggle we go through the more outcome so, YES we do. stay tuned for more BLASPHEMER assault!
CR: Let's talk about the story of AlNamrood for those who know the band for the first time in this interview, and it will be a fact that they will have attention to the band! We know that they are formed in 2008, and the name of the band means "The Non-Believer". Like all bands in their lyrics talk about politics, wars, death, personal situations and religion. What reasons motivated you to focus your lyrics against religion (Islam) in a country where most of its inhabitants are extremely religious? (It comes to my mind that the band is in the middle of a minefield) M: It all started when three men decided to put their aggression on music, specifically in Black Metal. The band started with the creative idea of combining the Arabic scale with black metal and Arabic lyrics. The main goal was to create something catchy and hard to fill the needs of extreme metal. Al-Namrood is the Arabic name of Babylonian King Nimrod, who was a powerful tyrannical king who ruled Babylon with blood and challenged the Ruler of the Universe, in accordance with the principles of monotheistic religions. We found the title of Al-Namrood to fit perfectly into the message of the band. (Literally Al-Namrood means "The Unbeliever")
CR: We know that because of this a hunt has been started against you accusing of being atheists and going against the religious principles in Saudi Arabia, which are exposed in some cases even with the death penalty. Tracks like Hayat Al Khezea, Bat Al Tha ar Nar Muhej, Estorat Taghoot are some examples... What has been the position of AlNamrood on these kind of threats? M: Well, the reason for us to criticize Islam is because we were directly affected by it. It was shoved down our throats. We had no choice, and rejecting will subject us to execution
CR: Have you thought about going to another country and continue your career, or are we witnessing a struggle for the conviction of rights and freedom for a Black Metal band that survives in a practically closed scene? M: Immigration is not the solution; we can still be tracked down by authority agents or assassins or religion maniacs.
CR: How does the band feel about being part of an interesting label like Shaytan Productions? M: It is excellent.
CR: What is your personal opinion about the musical evolution that the band has had since that EP of 2008 Atba'a Al-Namrood until today? M: For our limited choices such as gears, studio, safe place to rehearse…etc I would say decent enough. Every newer album we release we get better than the previous one since we keep trying hard to learn from our previous mistakes as well as enhancing the quality of recording.
CR: Is there any formula for the band in make high quality albums during these years? M: High quality is NOT our main goal, we are more about exercising the sprite of the occult by spreading chaos, hate and violence.
CR: Being a band that expresses and sings in Arabic, have you contemplated in the future to make an album in English or do you consider it´s best to express yourselves in their mother tongue? M: We find Arabic much more offensive and has a darker approach than English so we might stick with it so far! Or maybe starting an English side project one day. Everything is possible!
CR: What is the vision that you and your bandmates have for AlNamrood in the future? M: We do what pleases us. We will continue making music.
CR: What message do you want to send to those who have read this interview, and I want to thank you for the time you have taken in answering our questions for our audience and readers at Conexion Rock Radio . M: Disobey religions and all forms of authorities. Fight hard and do not take shit from anyone!
