Stay in Bed?... It's Time to Humanize
Ancient Teeth's Ambitious Plan Conexión Rock Radio offers rock and grunge lovers a band that seeks to be heard by everyone, and that seeks in all possible ways for its sound to reach the most distant corners. In this case we make contact to Canada, and there we talk with our guest: Adrian Mottram, voice and guitar of the band Ancient Teeth who in 2024 present their new release called Humanizer, which was released on March 8 of this year, marking in this way a continuation of Deathbed, his debut that was released in February 2023. Adrian tells us everything related to the production process of Humanizer, the songs and the concept that the band offers us in this new album, the guests, and how the pandemic would influence Mottram and his bandmates to make interesting songs through of two albums released in his career. Currently Ancient Teeth is made up of Adrian Mottram - guitar and vocals, Chris Hughes - guitar and vocals, Mike Duffield - drums, and Jahmeel Russell - bass. You are invited now to enjoy this enjoyable reading with Adrian, to learn the history of Ancient Teeth, and to let its sound, far from resting in bed, begin to be a humanizing agent for everyone. Conexión Rock Radio: Good morning from Honduras Adrian, thank you very much for accepting the invitation to do this interview, and it is an honor to be able to echo what Ancient Teeth is currently doing this year, welcome! Adrian Mottram: Good morning Johonny. I really appreciate the opportunity to be here talking to the people of Honduras and thank you very much for inviting me to talk for Conexión Rock Radio. CR: We started the interview with good news within the Ancient Teeth camp, they recently released their second album called Humanizer on March 8 through Undone/Creative, this is an independent label, right?
AM: That's right. That is an independent label and at the same time a publishing house where everything related to the band is published, we also work on a digital platform modality for streaming releases, and we are currently working for Canadian territory with a label called Debt Offensive Records, and through Of them we are releasing the new album in cassette format to give more reach to people who want to obtain this classic format. CR: That is a very good initiative for those who want to listen to them on cassette very old school, although it is also available on CD, first of all congratulations on the launch, they have made very good songs there and we know that people will like this new work . How do you feel about the general receptions you have given to this new and promising chapter in your history? AM: Thanks for listening. I think the expectation really is to continue making music and let everyone hear it, we are waiting for the right moment and conditions to be able to play them live and for people to learn about this new material. We even know that there are people outside of Canada who liked it and I refer to your comment moments ago, so that is our main priority within the promotion cycle: to make it reach people on other continents and for them to enjoy it, and if we manage That is already a profit, making people like those songs, and one day not too distant we can go on a trip to those countries and share our music with them. CR: Hopefully that goal will be soon for you, as you know Deathbed was released in 2023, this album has been well received by people, but in the case of this new one everyone thinks that there is an interesting evolution here not only because of the sound , but because of musical maturity to the point of saying “hey, this is a good song and I hope they can play it live” or that this material becomes classic over the years. Was the production process easy or were ideas given so that the songs had a better focus in the final mix, what details can you share with us?
AM: Well, the songs undergo constant changes in the process, and in the case of Humanizer everything was in a fast and particular way, since the ideas flowed constantly, for example, you made a chord and suddenly you had the structure done in three hours, and suddenly the others arrived normally. In the end everything was done and it was just a matter of tweaking ideas or changing lyrics, and I feel that having the guitar at home was very helpful to be able to make this album because everything felt very inspired. Already entering the studio it was very clear what we all had in mind, to give you an idea, one of the songs that did not have many changes was Stay In Bed, we saw that it was perfect since we demoed it, and the best thing was to leave it like this how was it. Usually the process was 10 to 12 takes, but with Stay it was something that was naturally natural, we had the demos at hand and we could see what ideas could be improved there, and once everything was rehearsed we decided that it was time to go to the studio Once we were inside, it was very fast to the point that there were few takes that we had to repeat, something that is good to highlight about this Johonny experience is that both Chris and Mike gave an interesting twist to some parts that were different from the ones we recorded in the We demoed, and from the moment we were rehearsing those songs we felt that there was a natural chemistry, and the best thing was to do that in the studio and make the listener have a more organic and real experience so that they can enjoy the material that we captured there. Another point there was the participation of my parents for Vanishing Light since they played the trumpet and the oboe. I was in charge of accompanying them on the piano and everything turned out very well in the end. CR: That's very interesting about the experience of the process. We will talk about the guests shortly. Let's go to the strong points that the album offers, we have tracks like Sacrifice, Feral, What Ya Feeling, Loathe, Astray, Stay In Bed, but people wonder what the lyrics of Ancient Teeth talk about?
AM: I see that those are your favorite songs, thanks for rating them. Regarding your question, I can honestly tell you that we have written this album to talk about how we are all equal in this world. When the world suffered with the pandemic in 2020, many of us went through resentment and even rejection towards other people and I could perceive that, and I said in my mind here we must all be equal. With the pandemic we lived a kind of challenge, and the best thing was to channel all that and convert that energy into songs, we were all aware that that massive global event affected us, and our intention from the first moment was to make songs made with the heart and express those feelings to people, and that's how the first album was composed. CR: Well, about the special guests, which I mentioned in a few, a few minutes. We had Katrina Natale, Ryan Dahle, Jordy Birch (who plays guitar on Down a Hole), and of course your parents Morack and Jim Motram. What impressions do you have of the participation of these people who have collaborated for Humanizer?
AM: Regarding Jordy, we have been working for years and he has also collaborated on the first album. I feel that with him the ideas flowed much more quickly, and he has contributed things to me in relation to the lyrics of some songs, the It was very helpful to be able to channel everything when composing. For Vanishing Light with Ryan he helped me with the Mellotron track, and he has also participated for both albums, I remember that when we started with the ideas for the new album he only told me send the demos and we will see what comes out there. Upon receiving the demo back I could perceive that that contribution was perfect, it was creepy, but disturbing at the same time because that instrument could give a different atmosphere to the song, while with Trish Robb I considered that it was the voice I needed for her to sing. there since she is great at doing her thing, and I told her: this is your song. Working with my parents was something special for me because I have always admired them and wanted to have them as guests on an album, and I feel very grateful to them because we were able to do that. But I especially want to thank each of the people who left their talent at Humanizer, I believe that here we have left an interesting part of our history. CR: And let's hope that these collaborations will always continue, Adrian. Now talking about good things that have happened with the band, what is your point of view on the musical growth that Ancient has had since the moment of its founding, not only for those who follow them through the years, but for those who know their existence now will be an interesting proposal that you will hear from now on. How do you see this interesting phenomenon of discovery?
AM: The truth is that as a band everything has been very favorable, to the point of telling you that we are already working on a new album that will be released in 2025, there are stories and experiences that need to be shared, we will do all this without rush or pressure. We will let everything arise naturally and we will see the number of ideas that can come from there. I consider myself as a kind of workaholic (laughs) and I feel that when composing you feel that things are going quickly but surely and suddenly that cycle repeats itself over and over again, so I have no reason not to get bored because I leave a defined period of time to dedicate myself to composing songs and you end up focusing on doing new things during the day, and that is part of the musician's daily life to compose and create, and I am very happy to have many ideas in my head to make the song. as many songs as possible. So I can tell you with certainty that the third album is in development and I want to go in a musical line in the style of The Beach Boys with a Surf theme. That will be a lot of fun when it's time to get back into the studio. I have many ideas as to what the orientation of the band would be in terms of sound, there are many styles and it is necessary to take advantage of those elements and together with the influences of each of us to do something interesting there, and I think that in the return What could be our most important project could appear around the corner. CR: It´s interesting all the plans that you are looking to make for the coming years.
I wish, being you from Canada, have you had the opportunity to tour abroad? You know, because of the budgets that could be very high and that would force them to only do national tours. AM: The truth is I can tell you that it is sadly true, since organizing something in a post-pandemic situation has until now become very difficult, and by the numbers a project like this would be very expensive. We intend to play everywhere, in fact, there are people who are considering us playing in Mexico City and Costa Rica, we have also considered the option of doing acoustic shows, we know that there are a lot of Latin audiences who love Canadian proposals. Andrew Neufeld from the band Comeback Kid told me that it is a perfect market for us to organize tours, for my part we would like to gain experience in these countries. Our intention is to come for you and shake your heads. CR: Many people see you as a super group, what do you think of this?
AM: This is very interesting because many people know us that we come from various bands within the Canadian scene, we could say that we are like a kind of “dream team” that together we contribute our efforts to make good albums in recent years. And I call this a dream team because we are all professionals, and they know their job very well when it comes to playing live, going to a rehearsal or recording in the studio. They listen to the music, digest it, and interpret it in their own way. You know, they have an accumulated experience of 20-30 years, and I am very grateful to continue working with them and to be able to count on recording another album, they can perfectly work on the material at home, and by the time we meet we already know that we must to make and we faithfully perform the song whether in a recording or in a live show, and I am proud of the quality of musicians I have as bandmates, there is nothing scheduled, just going to play, nothing more than that. Sometimes Mike comes in with some ideas that literally change an entire song, and I think sometimes that can't be flashy, but I let everything come out naturally, for example Down a Hole they did everything in an hour together with Jahmeel, they started rehearsing and improvising ideas, and suddenly all their work was covered and they went for some burritos afterwards (laughs). From the moment we were in the process of mixing and mastering the album we felt that everything was a real experience, we felt that far from being a recording captured on an album it was like listening to the band rehearsing in your living room, and as I told you before that I feel proud of them and the albums we have made. CR: Thanks for the response Adrian, we know that there is perfect chemistry between everyone to be able to make interesting albums like these. Now, I don't know if the fans have asked you to make some ideas in relation to the Ancient material, I don't know if, for example, as an idea, make acoustic versions, since the songs lend themselves very well to that and the other thing to do. a special edition of the Humanizer on vinyl… comments…
AM: The truth is, both ideas are striking. Regarding vinyl, we are planning to make an edition for the third album since there is a market for people who exclusively consume the format, and it would be looking for the conditions and people who would like to work on that project and in that way release it to the public, we are also open so that other labels outside of Canada could take the initiative there, since we would seek to present a product with a high quality standard, and I think the band's music would sound very good on vinyl. Regarding the acoustic versions, there is material that is saved, and it is not a bad idea to be able to publish it later as an EP, I think we would release 5 songs, they would be selected, but with everything that is happening with the new album it would take some time Giving shape to those ideas that you mention, making the versions with piano and strings would be giving them a different atmosphere, and I think I would be very interested in a project like that, but it would be later to do an acoustic session and see how everything turns out there. CR: So, we have to wait for that moment when the band can offer us good surprises later. Adrian, what message do you want to send to the people who have enjoyed this reading, and thank you for the time granted at home for Conexión Rock Radio. Hoping this is the first of many interviews where we want to share the story of Ancient Teeth, and best of luck with this new album.
AM: Thank you very much Johonny and Conexión Rock Radio for being part of this campaign to launch the new album and the legacy we are leaving here, it means a lot to us that people like you listen and value what we are doing for people all over the world. It is not surprising that people from Honduras begin to follow us on our networks. This material is for you, for those who want to feel identified with the feelings that we express in our songs, that can be helpful and be able to move forward in their lives, and for us as a band that really matters to us. We can only tell everyone that Humanizer is a tool in which they can feel like better people and be able to face the situations that we experience daily. We thank Sarah Lutz and Lucy Sky from Looters for their help in making this interview possible, as well as Adrian Mottram for the time given to this conversation.
