…And Oceans
… And Oceans
Five of Swords ... The Number of Good Luck of an Acclaimed Return Sometimes they say that, in a card game, the Ace of Spades is the one that defines a game ... But how about five swords ... that's right ... five is the number of albums that our guests released and curiously there are 5 of its members offer us an interesting adventure that they will share in this special report that Rock Radio Connection has for you this time. Our contact is up to the city of Pietarsaari in Finland, where we spoke with Timo Kontio and Mathias Lillmåns, members of the band ... And Oceans, who live an important moment in their history with the launch of their first production in almost 20 years of silence, and which is called Cosmic World Mother, which was released in early May through the Season Of Mist label, and that for their fans this new album represents a great chapter in the history of the band. ... And Oceans is a band that combines the sound of Black Metal with symphonic elements, as well as electronic and industrial passages. This band has been active from 1995 to 2005 where they would form an alternative project called Havok Unit that managed to edit two albums, but to the delight of their fans they would return to action in 2017 with a live EP, and with a new lineup, which is made up of Teemu Saari and Timo Kontio- Guitars, Petri Seikkula- Bass, Kauko Kuusisalo- Drums, Antti Simonen- Keyboards, and the new addition is represented by Mathias Lillmåns in the Vowels, well known for also being the vocalist of another great band such as is Finntroll. In this report they will learn about the expectations that the band has with this new album, the concept behind Cosmic World Mother, the reasons for this pause and how they feel to return again as a band, and that due to paradoxes of fate number five definitely for ... And Oceans is your lucky number Below, we share with you our special report with the band: Conexión Rock Radio: Timo, Mathias, I´m Johonny González of Conexion Rock Radio of Honduras, I send you my best wishes that you are well at home with your families and bandmates, and in this special report we will share with our audience and readers the next news that ... And Oceans has for its fans this year, welcome! Timo Kontio: Hello Johonny, greetings from Finland, a pleasure to be able to talk with you on this day! Mathias Lillmåns: Still, thanks for your interest in talking to us and we send our best wishes to your readers that all is well with this pandemic that plagues us and has us locked up, but hopefully things will normalize soon! CR: Start the interview in congratulating the band, we have a new album, and it's called Cosmic World Mother, which was released in early May through Season of Mist.
Everyone thinks this is the best album of their career, and one of the releases and at the same time one of the most anticipated returns of this year! What are your expectations in this new and interesting chapter of your story? TK: Of course, we are very happy with this new release, and the comments have been really great, so we would like to go on tour and have several concerts, but now everything is canceled, but apart from that everything seems really great with this new release. ML: We've had good comments in the reviews, and the reaction so far has been truly incredible, ratings like four out of five stars on various sites, or 9 out of 10 in magazines, it's a good sign that everyone really likes this new album, we were eager to get out, and we started our first part of the tour in Japan, seeing that all activity is canceled, it remains to wait to see how things turn out in the coming days. CR: For this new album we have a new lineup: Kauko Kuusisalo- Drums, Antti Simonen- Keyboards, and Mathias Lillmåns- Vocals, by the way, he is the lead singer of Finntroll
Many consider that this new lineup will give a second youth to the band. How do you feel about returning after many years or absence? TK: Well actually we started off with an almost original lineup but for some reasons some of them some musicians were dropped for personal reasons but overall the current lineup is really strong and we've had a concert until Now, and everything indicates that in this new beginning the chemistry is working, and everyone could think of dramas or bad blood with some ex-components. What matters now is that we are ready to play again. CR: We want to know what is the concept behind Cosmic World Mother?
Many consider in this album that the band updates its sound in Symphonic Black Metal and Industrial / Electronic Metal Is it conceptual work or do we have separate stories around the tracks? ML: People always seek to know by fascination why the lyrics on our albums, being one of the composers, you always think if they are different or normal lyrics within Black Metal and things like that, there could be things that fit or not within the philosophy of the band, and I'm not really upset, I'm the typical normal person who writes about personal situations, and there are many variations within the music of… And Oceans. So in the conceptual point I would say that for there to be an interpretation by the fans, the most ideal thing is for them to listen to the album and analyze its lyrics. CR: This new work for the cover and the first singles all indicates that the band talks about the cycle of life and death ML: Yes, there are several tracks that connect to the main theme of the album, and there are other hidden things that can be discovered once you have heard everything so that people can take their conclusions. CR: For this new album, it reminds us a lot of its glorious past in Symphonic Black Metal, in addition to paying a small tribute to its also electronic past through the Keyboards, the production is one of the highlights of this work. We want to know if you had the help of an external producer for the recording or production process? TK: Actually, the whole process was handled by Mathias and myself, we started with the recorded guitars and made different takes, then the drums, bass, and then keyboards. It was actually everyone's decision, and the main idea is to capture the spirit of the band in their early days with a bit of the current sound, and it resulted in what the Cosmic World Mother is. CR: This is your third album in your history with Season Of Mist.
We know that you previously worked years ago with Century Media How does the band feel about being part of the Season Of Mist family again? TK: It feels like being home again (laughs), and it was easy to come to terms with them and from then on everything has worked really well with the Season Of Mist promotion team, and it was a natural decision between the band and the label. ML: I think it was the best for us, we previously worked with them, and it is a joy to return to Season Of Mist, and we hope to be able to release many albums with them in the coming years. CR: Mathias, we know that in addition to being the voice of ... And Oceans you also have other bands that you work with like Fintroll, Dispyt, Magenta Harvest, The Iniquity Descent, among others.
How was your entry into the band? ML: Well this has all been fun for the past few years (laughs), although I am currently working formally with 2 bands. Fintroll is currently on hiatus from the continuous cycle of tours, and we are preparing ideas of what a new album will be, we just don't know when it will be time to enter the studio. With ... And Oceans there are many tour plans and fun with them (laughs) but with this issue of the pandemic everything has been in the background, everything indicates that the tours will be reactivated the other year, so for us it will be like therapy when this is all over and we can't wait to get back on the road. We could do concerts with various obstacles in other conditions, but clearly not against a pandemic, all this is a mere matter of stress. So for now I will only be working with 2 bands and for my schedule that is feasible, and it is rare in my way of working not like before that I could work with 5 or 6 bands at once (laughs) CR: Timo, do you think the Havoc Unit could influence the new direction of the band for this new album?
TK: Not exactly, actually all that happened in 2005 when we were finishing a tour with ... And Oceans, we had new ideas and we recorded back then, but suddenly we noticed that this direction was very different from what we did in those years. So, we decided to make Havok Unit, which was a totally different band and it really had a lot of influences from industrial sound, so it really had nothing to do with the new sound that it currently has… And Oceans, although there are remote references to the band although in those days we only recorded two albums. CR: In the early days of the band you had acclaimed albums within the Black Metal Symphonic genre like The Dynamic Gallery of Thoughts and The Symmetry of I, the Circle of O, but when you released A.M.G.O.D. and Cypher defined a new direction in their sound, many thought if it was a good or bad decision that… And Oceans experienced industrial sound, and for that reason form Havok Unit, which you can tell us about it.
TK: I really don't know. I think with A.M.G.O.D. It had a lot of Black Metal atmosphere, in addition to making a contrast between the keyboard and the guitars that gave a completely electric atmosphere to the album, but with Cypher it was totally different in all the arrangements in relation to what we did previously, but that is something that It has to do with the fact that Syphon (Petri Seikkula- Guitarist in the early days and Bassist currently) knows about the transition we had from that lineup to the current one, he made several songs for Cyhper, and that's why we wanted to sound different, and Now we have our sound already established and a story that we seek to continue. CR: The music that the band has brought to long-time and new fans who have joined along the way in recent years. What impressions do you have of this generational relay that the band experiences in their live shows? TK: It is very cool to see the younger generations listening to our music, just like those of us who have been parents since the mid-1990s, we know that many of these young people are now parents and share what we have done during all these years to your children, this opens the possibility that our work is in the ears of many for several years, and it is a very good thing in my opinion. ML: Yes, it is definitely like passing the torch to someone else, it is a curious thing that there are many young people who come to see us at our shows, and those who do not know us will find a way to satisfy that curiosity or the comments they make about it. word of mouth on our tours. We have experienced this phenomenon ourselves, when we formed our bands and released our albums, everything is fascinating, and when they come to give us good comments and have a good time with them, it is a way of thanking them for all the support they give us. give, we really appreciate it. CR: Many young Metal bands around the world look to the band as an influence for their contribution to various albums over the years, what do you think about it? TK: As I mentioned before, it's nice to be an influence for new bands, and it's interesting to see that growth that currently exists on the scene. ML: I remember in the early years when the Black Metal scene started strongly and the arrival of ... And Oceans, and especially the emergence of small cities, were important moments. CR: As you are a band from Finland, has it been easy or difficult to obtain national and international recognition?
TK: Actually, when we made those albums in the late 90s and early 2000s, there were no social networks and forums, everything was done by email, and over the years and technologies we have realized that we have a lot of followers around the world and in the end, we got quite a few comments. And it has been easy for us, because despite the long absence we have had, many people still remember us, and especially on our return. ML: In my case it would be different because I did not live those days with the band, but I can tell you that their fight was not easy, making their first tours and making a name for themselves internationally is a pride for anyone, and in especially if you come from Finland and you play in a black metal band, this is an interesting point compared to the more than 2000 or 3000 bands that currently exist, and it is difficult to highlight especially for the ... And Oceans, but when you travel to other parts of Europe or Scandinavia for example people know about you and suddenly that interest is generated in listening to our work. CR: The band throughout its history has released excellent works, in your point of view, is there any formula for the oceans to have an interesting discography with albums that are not underrated? TK: No (laughs) if it were like that everything would be really easy. The point here is to make songs that people like, that is an advantage, but of course, we generate a kind of understanding that connects others through music, and magic arises when you record in the studio, and that many expect the best of you when you release a song or an album. CR: Do you consider this point in the history of the band to release a live album?
ML: I don't know the truth, doing a live album project would be a really risky business, but who knows, although the trend is to focus and release studio albums. We recently recorded an EP with two songs live in Estonia for Steel Fest, and for now that's our only live record. CR: Very interesting that appreciation Mathias, in recent years the recording industry has had many changes, many people are now betting on the digital format through streaming and download platforms, and few are still loyal to the physical format. Is it beneficial or harmful for the band to release all their work in studio or live on digital? ML: I don't think it's harmful or risky at all or whatever bands have to adapt to this situation today, so the release is really cool because we can see that people are really buying a digital album from a site in Bandcamp for example, in the same way there are stores for those who love the physical format of course, and we have to understand people who want to buy a digital, for us that is fine. TK: Yes, you already have to add the digital trends that have priority throughout the world, I am also a supporter of the CD and I have my shelf at home (laughs), but you know that now with this streaming, it is something that revolutionizes to the industry, and it's what people want, new things all the time, so I think it's good that we all adapt in these new times. CR: Once this emergency is over, do you have any plans to tour in the final months of 2020 or 2021?
If there are plans for Latin America, it is sure that they will have many fans in our region. TK: The last part of this year we are trying to reschedule all the shows in various places in Finland, and make sure that we are ready to tour Europe, all that means that the conditions are safe after this pandemic, and of course, tour in Latin America and South America, they will be really great experiences at some point, so it depends on the interest and the demand to organize something in these countries. CR: What message would you like to send to those who read us in this report and thank you for answering our questions on Conexión Rock Radio? ML: There is always something new for everyone, we invite those who read us to spend their time listening to us, we know that tours have been canceled, but with this new album at home and with this confinement it will be a perfect opportunity to listen to this new album , and we hope it is to your liking. TK: Thank you for your time and interest, Johonny, and we send a greeting from ... And Oceans to all your readers and listeners, and just as Mathias said to follow us, to buy our album, it will be an honor that they value our I work this year. CR: Mathias, Timo, thank you very much for your time! Best to you and your bandmates at home with this emergency, stay safe, as well as to our Season Of Mist friends for their help in this interview, and we look forward to speaking again in the future to continue the story of a iconic band like ... And Oceans! ML: Thanks Johonny! TK: We wish all of you the best!
