APOTHEUS
APOTHEUS
A Triumphal March Toward Unification Progressive Metal takes its place in the international interviews that Conexión Rock Radio conducts on its journey through various countries around the world, and the band that we present in this report is an interesting recommendation, not only for its attractive proposal, but also for its bright future. that they are looking to achieve with a new album in their hands. We arrived in Portugal, precisely in Paços de Ferreira, and that is where we talked with our special guest: Miguel Andrade, guitarist and voice of the band Apotheus, who shares his impressions of how people both in his country and on other continents have applauded their new album, the third in their history called Ergo Atlas, which was released on October 6, 2023 through the Black Lion Records label, and for many this work is what will open the doors for the band to be able to play in other countries and reach more people with their songs. Miguel shares with all of you the process of creating this album and how the band would overcome the global crisis caused by the 2020 pandemic, which stopped their plans, but once the situation was under control they decided to attack the road and present their material to fans, and which according to Andrade Ergo Atlas is part of a trilogy project that began some time ago with the launch of The Far Star in 2019. Apotheus was formed in 2008, and is currently made up of Miguel Andrade and Luís Gold Monkey - Guitars, Albano von Hammer - Drums, and Daniel Rocha - Bass. We invite you to search for the band on Spotify, grab your snacks and drinks, and be part of a legion that seeks to be agents of change in the world to witness a triumphant march towards unification. Conexión Rock Radio: Good afternoon at home Miguel, first of all thank you for accepting our invitation for this interview in which we will talk about the future plans that Apotheus has this year, it is an honor to have you here. Miguel Andrade: Hello Johonny, thank you for inviting me and for your interest in knowing more about the band to everyone, very grateful. CR: We started talking about the band's new album that came out at the end of 2023, it is called Ergo Atlas and was released by Black Lion Records, many people have been responding favorably to this new album. How do you feel about the reviews and comments that people have left on social networks?
MA: I think overall people were very surprised, partly because of the production value. As I mentioned, I think production quality was something we were struggling with, and we were trying to improve for a long time. Seeing all the reactions and good reviews we consider this to be our best effort to date. Something that we have noticed in the people who have reacted to the new sound that we have presented from this new album, for us we had to make a change in that aspect, which was very well received by everyone, and I think that this evolution was noticeable when we worked for Far Star in 2019, such as the introduction of cleaner vocals and more structured songs. We believe that all of this has done justice to the band in this new stage and we see this experiment as the most interesting thing we have done in our career. CR: Thank you Miguel, we know that it means a lot to the band that you are being supported with a very good album like this. Speaking of albums, you previously mentioned The Far Star, we know that it was released in 2019, but with the pandemic literally all of your plans changed. Do we want to know if for the tours of the new album you will combine some of the set with The Far Star to recover lost time and ground?
MA: When we had just released the album and we had prepared to do the European tour with The Far Star, the pandemic arrived and ruined our plans. On that occasion we would do a set with most of the songs from the new album at that time along with those from When Hope and Despair Collide which was our first album. We thought that the best thing was to start something with a conceptual and narrative project, and basically everything would start with The Far Star, which we consider as an important step in our career. We have given our best effort so that this album could see the light, and musically speaking this put us on a different path. Due to the pandemic, many people do not know what we were doing at that time, with the arrival of Ergo Atlas it was one more reason for people to find out what we were doing years ago and to learn more about our work. Something extra I want to mention here is that both albums are connected, since both The Far Star and Ergo Atlas are one continuous story. CR: For the new album we found interesting moments that would catch the listener's attention such as The Unification Project, Cogito, Shape and Geometry, Re:unión and Re:genesis.
What experience did the band have in working again with Jorge Lopez in the production of Ergo Atlas? MA: That all started when most of the band members had their equipment at home, you know, to record ideas and the parts that would ultimately make up the songs. They all manage their audio studios, and that's where Jorge comes into the game to work with us as a producer, since he is our friend. We presented the ideas to him and he told us that at that pace the band would have maturity and a good evolution in its sound. Both of us in recent years have learned things and we have seen Jorge as the ideal person for the band. Producing this new album left us with a lot of learning during the recording and production time in the studio. He has done very good work for several artists, and so we feel that his work has given him great references in the local scene. When we all sat down and thought about who would be the ideal person to record and make a new album, no one doubted Jorge's work, and instinctively that was a natural choice for us. In short, he is the fifth element of the band, since we really enjoyed working with him, and we believe that the formula would be repeated in the not too distant future. CR: Let's hope that this synergy between band and producer continues as long as possible Miguel. You told us moments before that both The Far Star and Ergo Atlas are conceptual of each other. Is Apotheus planning to do some kind of trilogy project?
MA: That's right. This new one and The Far Star handle intertwined stories. The band has gotten serious about making concept albums. For those who read us here, I will tell you what the story is about in summary. During the writing process of The Far Star we decided to rent a house in the middle of nowhere with no cell phones. We spent a few weeks there making ideas and preparing the entire composition process. When we returned to the studio we already knew the songs we were going to work with, but at the same time we had a concept and a science fiction story that we wanted to share with everyone, and we loved that. We had it very detailed in our minds, the events during the plot and development of the album were precise, and through the lyrics we sought to reflect those stories, but then we thought this is too good and decided to give people the opportunity to read everything and live the experience in a different way, along with all that, the best thing was to make a book about that story and we published it. By the way, for those who are interested in reading it, it is available online for free through our website. We also recorded a mediabook version so that people can enjoy the narrative and the original story. In this way we went very deep into the story to give a flow in its story from beginning to end, and we believe that with Ergo Atlas we guaranteed that these stories had the best possible continuity, it is like making Terminator and Terminator II so that you have a reference about what that we seek to speak. CR: Something that draws attention here Miguel is on the cover, on the one hand, the naked people, and there is also a black star, could that be a reference to The Far Star?
MA: Definitely if there are many references in terms of story terms, people there look at that black star as a kind of oppressive and all-powerful entity. He is in himself one of the characters in the story, to be more direct he is the antagonist. As the story progresses, people learn about what this villain plans to do with humanity and how he explains his reasons for behaving that way, which is why there are some plot twists as the story develops. There are some things that are touched on, such as morality, it is something that must be explored and try to find a balance between the good and the bad that life has, there are philosophical topics that we address where an evil must be channeled to become an evil. well or vice versa, although in reality that star that appears on the cover really is not, in this way a fight begins between conqueror and conquered to generate a balance between freedom and slavery. So the best thing is that people find out more, it would give a lot of clues and I prefer not to spoil the surprise (laughs) CR: We know that the album came out digitally on platforms and physically through digipak, I don't know if on social networks fans have asked you to release this material on vinyl, I tell you this because the cover would do justice for a format Of these features, what do you think about this? MA: We have several requests to launch it in a limited way, but seeing everything that the industry has experienced we see that the format does not sell as much, and it can be justified, for example, to launch it for a certain number of units, and that is to sit back and discuss if we plan to offer a new product to the public. In relation to the cover, I see that from the comment that you liked it, but there are people who may see this as a strange point starting with the nudity, and perhaps by releasing it like this they might think that we are doing something that many may see as disturbing. CR: What you say is true (laughs), good point there! Now, seeing that detail that you have exposed about the vinyl and the cover, of course, if the vinyl proposal still stands, we could think about doing this with an alternative cover to avoid any type of censorship. MA: Possibly that option could occur in the future. But if we make a vinyl the best thing out of respect for the original work of the album is that it be released with the original cover, we don't want to alter anything and we don't seek to censor with something that fits perfectly there with the music. The person who made the cover deserves respect and recognition of his art. It would be a shame to do something and then censor his work, then we would not agree on that. When we launched the album on the platform we made sure that it was not blocked because of that detail, and even on social networks. But for now everything is fine, so we can breathe easy as long as they don't start doing things against the band. CR: An EP, three released albums and this whole story that you started in 2008
What do you think of the interesting evolution that Apotheus has had in its history? MA: During all these years we have matured both as people and as musicians. We consider that we have known how to improve ourselves with each album we have recorded and that contributed to the bar being higher and higher, that motivated us to do better things and one of those results was the creation of The Far Star. But before we had that mentality we thought that the important thing was to play live, but also during those adventures with the public you gain experience and with that you aspired more so that your performance was perfect. Age is an important part of this entire process, and throughout this trip we have known how to take advantage of every minute in all possible places with people, and in the end we all left satisfied. In conclusion, I can tell you that with what we have done so much in The studio as well as on the road has really helped us with everything, and as a band we are happy that this is part of our life experience. CR: Now, for the people who meet you for the first time in this interview, and will surely begin to investigate you on digital platforms, many will wonder why the name of the band, they might think that it refers to some Portuguese or Greek god, Why Apotheus?
MA: It is an interesting question that is rarely touched upon. About the name of the band it is derived from an invented word that is derived from Apotheosis and the best thing was to divide the idea into two words: the first was Apo, and then Theus was a Latin expression derived from God, and by putting the two together In words, we felt that it was an ideal name, and we considered that our music had a somewhat divine context to express that all-powerful being. Thank you for the question Johonny, it was something that is not commonly talked about. CR: Thanks for the comment Miguel, this is part of our job.
Currently the band has several videos within the promotion of Ergo Atlas, the surprise here is that there are 5 produced, I think that for people it is a sign that it has been very well accepted, especially for the songs. Do you plan to release any live videos or do you think these videos are just enough to promote the album? MA: We consider that it is a good number of videos, since we have reasonably exploited the promotion for Ergo Atlas, but I tell you that we have 7 videos, but none live. The reason we want to do here is that each video can follow a line of continuity, we started all of this in 2023, and we have made a video for each song. As a band we have invested and we think that this is part of a strong promotion where we talk about the reason for the video and the song, we have made intelligent ideas in that aspect, I would dare to tell you that we have done everything from the cinematic aspect, and seeing your idea I think that a live video would be possible but once we close the cycle with this album, and if you ask me what the next one could be I would bet on Re:genesis. CR: Let's wait then for those interesting surprises that the band has in the visual section, Miguel. Currently this is the second album that the band releases with Black Lion Records. What are your impressions of working with a label that has supported you in recent years? MA: We have had a lot of support from them, I tell you that it is a label that is based in Sweden, and since we started our journey in this scene one of the most important objectives was to be part of or work with a record company to make that our proposal be exposed to the world, and I can tell you with discretion that the friends of Black Lion have evolved a lot in their way of making things easier for bands. Since we had everything ready with Ergo Atlas we were in negotiations with the label to see if there was an option to continue with them, and Black Lion values our music and they know why we must go very far with what we do. We believe that both sides are growing on this journey and through experiences we have been able to strengthen that trust so that they give us their support, which we are proud of in this part of the history for Apotheus already with Ergo Atlas traveling the world. CR: With this album being heavily promoted, what's next for Apotheus?
National tours or tours outside of Portugal, or any important festivals in Central Europe? MA: Well, we have always played shows in Portugal, in fact, we recently played at an important festival here and shared the stage with Caligula's Horse and other important bands, it was a good experience for us. In our plans we have several dates in Spain that have already been announced. We are working on being able to organize a visit to France, in the same way we are in constant communication with various promoters outside the country and we want to take the band as far as possible, and that is one of our objectives to be able to reach more people not only in Europe but also in America, but time only decides when things are favorable. CR: At the end of this interview Miguel, what message do you want to send to those who enjoyed this conversation, and thank you for the time granted there in Portugal to support Apotheus in this part of its history, and we hope to be able to talk again in the not too distant future. distant to give continuity in its history
MA: First of all, thank you Johonny for the time and interest in the band, for its history and for its music, and of course, I accept the invitation to speak later and also invite the rest of the band to join. to another interview. We thank the people who have supported us in all these years, and those who know us for the first time we give them the warmest welcome to our universe and enjoy our music. Special thanks to Davide Pulito of The Metallist for making this interview possible, and to
Miguel Andrade for the time granted in this interview. We invite you to know more about the interesting news and releases that Apotheus has for all of you, in the same way you can buy their official merchandise and contacts through their Facebook, Official Site and Bandcamp Enjoy his music at full volume through his channel on Spotify In our multimedia section we present his videos The Unification Project and Ergo Bellum © Black Lion Records |
