ASH OF ASHES
ASH OF ASHES
Traces Under The Midnight Sun For lovers of Folk with epic lyrics, we invite you to join us for the following interview that we have prepared for all of you in our international interviews on Conexión Rock Radio. Our next stop is in Germany, and there we talk with Markus Skroch, voice and multi-instrumentalist of the band Ash Of Ashes who this year offer us their second album called Traces, and who has had an interesting list of guests this time, provided in each of the songs on this album a different character, which will ensure that you enjoy this album from start to finish. Ash Of Ashes was formed in 2014 after the dissolution of their previous project called Hel, and they would make their debut in 2018 with their album Down the White Waters. Currently the band is made up of a piece of two musicians, being Morten Basse who accompanies Skroch in this interesting adventure. Make yourselves comfortable, and enjoy this conversation with Markus where we discuss the pandemic, the production process of the new album, the experience with the guests, and the ambitious plans that these Germans seek to write in their history… leaving traces under the midnight sun. Conexion Rock Radio: Hello Makus, thank you for the time you will give us in this interview for our readers in Latin America and the rest of the world where we will talk about the interesting news that Ash Of Ashes has in this 2022, welcome! Markus Skroch: Good evening from Germany Johonny, thanks for your interest in the band, and it's a joy to talk to people from Central America and share what we have in hand for the whole world. CR: I start my conversation with you to find out how things have been in recent months for the band back home, have you had the opportunity to perform after this long period of confinement?
MS: The truth is that we have not had the opportunity to go out or rehearse together due to some restrictions that are still in force in some cities, but the positive point of all this is that we have already released a new album, now we are just waiting for the opportunity to rehearse and prepare some plans and be able to present it in as many places as possible. CR: Let's talk about Traces, this is the second album in the band's discography and it was released last May 13 through Kalthallen Tonträgerm by the way, congratulations for this tremendous album that I consider one of the releases that will catch people's attention In this 2022, what reactions have people had towards this new material?
MS: First of all, thank you for your words, we have had very good reactions from the press and the fans, who have commented very positive things on the album. Markus Eck, who is our friend and who has known how to promote our proposal, has done a great job in getting us interviews with journalists from all over the world, not only with us, but with all the bands that have had the opportunity to work with him in the last years. We are very happy so far for the great reception towards Traces, since it was released on CD and LP and many people are enjoying it in their homes. CR: We have had the opportunity to listen to the discography, and it left us with a very good impression at the first listen without having to move from one track to another, and that has been a very positive effect on the band's music. How do you feel about launching this interesting work in conditions as rugged as this? MS: We weren't sure whether or not to release the album during the pandemic. Many bands generally took advantage of this two-year period to record and release their work, and for many that was a point in their favor, since many people took advantage of consuming more music during the confinement, especially in 2021, in the same way others are saving to take advantage of going to the festivals that are already beginning to open their doors. As a band we thought it was prudent to release the album when things started to improve, we thought about it if it was really risky to be able to do that, in the end we bet on releasing it and it was a correct decision in the end. CR: People will think that with these two albums you are preparing a kind of trilogy, the debut album is called Down the White Waters, and the first track of the new album is called Beyond White Waters... literally this is sailing on the sea to take a trip to the mountains
What does Ash of Ashes with Traces offer us this time? MS: First of all Johonny, you are right about a continuity of stories, there is a connection between the albums without abusing conceptual elements. For example, when listening to Down the White Waters and this new one you have the feeling that there is a link between both works, the end of one story but the beginning of another when you listen to Beyond White Waters, which is the track that opens Traces. It was a good idea but we are considering that this formula could work for a trilogy. So, we'll see what we can prepare later. CR: For this new album you have the collaboration of new musicians who come from Norway and France, and who give a special and epic air to the songs, by the way, your girlfriend participates playing the hurdy-gurdy, what impressions do you have of the participation of all of them for Traces?
MS: All those who have participated in this album are my friends. It was very important that for this album we had some guests, and the best thing for me was to have people within my circle of friends, and especially with those who I have had the opportunity to work with in the recording studio producing their respective bands. So at the time of working with them they had their respective participation in each of the songs. When we started the recording process, I extended the invitation to all of them and they gladly agreed to work with me. I met one of the guests online and I traveled to Norway years ago to meet his band and it was a pleasant experience. My girlfriend contributed a lot with the hurdy-gurdy and gave a special touch to the songs, and it was an incredible experience that they all appeared, and that served to make the album process faster and more complex. CR: Let's talk about Ash Of Ashes for people who meet the band for the first time.
We know that this project was born after the dissolution of Hel, a band with which you played for several years and your brother Thomas played guitar, bass and voice. How the idea for Ash of Ashes was born MS: All this happened in 2012 when we had our previous band called HEL, we were three composers and we left a great contribution to the scene by recording four albums and at that moment we all thought as if all that had changed for the better in our lives. Our last album Das Atmen der Erde from 2012 was a testament to that and we felt that we should close that cycle in a very natural way and take different paths. That way I got away from music for a while, and I decided to come back to make new ideas focused in another direction, especially because of the language issue and I didn't want everything I would do from now on to be sung in German. CR: That point is very interesting even though the band is from Germany they prefer to sing in English although there are many examples of bands that have succeeded singing in their mother tongue, we could mention Rammstein and Arkona for example.
MS: I think that Rammstein is a great exception there, due to the fact that they have worked a lot since their beginnings and are currently very popular around the world, they handle that orientation of history and military aspects typical of German culture. It is necessary to point out that all the bands seek to popularize their proposals in their own way, and the public, noticing that, will see how good they are when they perform on tours and concerts. In my case it was a very correct decision to sing in English and thus reach more people because they can easily understand both the lyrics and the music at the same time. CR: I don't know if there have been requests from fans to make German versions of both the first and the new album? MS: Not really on their part. I think they are very comfortable that we present our music entirely in English. Maybe for the next album we can do something different, for example in Traces there is a track that is a traditional song from Sweden and Norway called Vem kan segla förutan vind (Who Can Sail With The Wind) or later on do something in German, it could be something interesting, but for now that is not very clear. CR: In previous years when you released Down the White Waters, have you had the opportunity to play outside of Germany?
What impressions have people had with the band's proposal? MS: When I started this project, the main idea was not to play or perform live, since the band is made up of two members and we both contribute music as well as lyrics and vocals. At the time that the album was completed we thought about the possibility of doing something live with guest musicians, so they invited us to a festival where they addressed themes related to Vikings and pagans, and the reaction of the people when listening to our music was unbelievably. That would set a guideline for what we should do later, but with the arrival of the coronavirus things got complicated for us due to the rescheduling on the one hand, and the cancellation of concerts and festivals on the other. For us, we already looked at this as a lost opportunity because we had one foot in the door to be able to perform some concerts. So, the experience of playing was good with people, but for now it's not the main goal of the band and maybe later when things are normal we can consider playing again for people either from Germany or from other countries. Call me a weirdo, but I'd rather work in the recording studio a thousand times and make a perfect album. That is by far my favorite environment where I can do a lot of things. CR: For this new album you have had the participation of Alboîn, Stryx and Sethras, when listening to the songs many will consider that they have contributed an excellent job to the album.
As you mentioned before, you have had live collaborations and the conclusion is that the band works more in the studio than in live shows. Have you considered that they might be permanent in the Ash of Ashes lineup? MS: Working with them has been a pleasant experience, and if you asked me if I would like to work with them in the future, I would say yes without hesitation. If I had more musicians that were permanent and that this band grew I should think very well, since being only one piece of two we would look at this as baby steps (laughs) and I want the music to sound exactly right both at the time of composition and of execution, having guests makes the project more interesting due to the roles that are assigned in the studio, although the truth is that I do not aspire that all this can be expanded and that I may not be able to handle it later, in the same way to work with writers to make this easy. Those are ideas that I seek to consider and give our music a better meaning for listeners. CR: We know that the album was released on CD and Vinyl, do you plan to make a promotional video for any of the songs? Do you have one that is your favorite?
MS: I could consider Evermore for a video for two reasons, the first is that it is a very melodic song and the second that it could fit commercially and radio so that it is more accessible to people (laughs), there are several ideas to do something in video not only for one, but for several songs of the album so that with time and a good budget we can make a suitable video for the promotion. CR: With the album already out on the streets, are there plans to perform at festivals later on? MS: Not for now. We don't plan to do concerts, so I'm very sorry to people who want to see us, but on the other hand, they have an album which they can enjoy at home. CR: What message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview, and thank you again for the time granted to Conexión Rock Radio
MS: Thank you very much Johonny, it was very nice talking to you. In fact, you took the time to learn more about our history and music. It was a pleasant talk and thanks to the people who have supported us, and those who follow us, we hope that our work is to the liking of all of you. I send you a greeting from Germany and take care of yourselves at home. Special thanks to Markus Skroch for his time, as well as Markus Eck from Metalmessage for his help in making this interview possible.
