AT THE GATES
Si la pandemia no existiera estarían preparando una celebración para The Red in the Sky Is Ours cumple 30 años en 2022.

AT THE GATES
The Progression Of A Nightmare Made Art If you are a lover of Melodic Death Metal, and especially the Sound of Gothenburg, Conexión Rock Radio brings you all one of its greatest exponents, and that this year despite there are no concerts or tours around the world they return with a new record production, and that for their fans they already see this as one more classic in their already consecrated history. On this occasion we spoke to that country with his vocalist Tomas Lindberg, who shares with all of you all the details related to his new album called The Nightmare of Being, which was released at the beginning of July 2021 via Century Media Records, and that With the release of their first previews, critics praised this interesting effort and that they currently consider it one of the highlights so far this year. At The Gates currently in addition to Lindberg on Vocals he is complemented by Jonas Björler- Bass, Adrian Erlandsson - Drums, Martin Larsson and Jonas Stålhammar- Guitars. In this special report we will talk about the experience lived in the studio, the concept behind this new album, his point of view on the pandemic that has affected the music industry around the world, and the plans that the band seeks to specify in the future. on several continents, and inviting us to witness the progression of a nightmare made art! Conexión Rock Radio: Tomas, how are you, we greet you from Honduras, Central America, and from here we send our good wishes to you, your family and your bandmates who are safe and well with this emergency, and it is an honor to speak with you and share with our readers about the next news that a great band like At The Gates has for their fans this year, welcome!
Tomas Lindberg: Hi Johnny, thank you for your interest in the band, and we also send good wishes to your readers there in Central and Latin America. CR: Many thanks to you, we began the interview to find out how things are there in Gothenburg with this problem of the pandemic and that many of us have suffered fans and bands since 2020 not being able to go to concerts and festivals. TL: We have been punished during all this time, but on the other hand we are fortunate because we have used all this time to compose and prepare the new album, in the same way to try to make the necessary changes so that the final process is complete for everyone, and that. I represent an escape route to focus on the study. We really miss playing live and touring, we hope that all this will return to normal to get closer to the fans in the coming months, for that reason we are slowly but surely preparing our concert schedule. CR: Let's talk about the good news that the band has for its fans this year Tomas, the band released on July 2 their 7th album called The Nightmare of Being through Century Media Records and we have a winner that will be highly acclaimed. By fans and critics around the world, by the way, number 7 is a good luck number for the band.
What expectations do you have with this work that profiles for the best of 2021? TL: Yes, for us all this has been an important moment, since we entered the studio we were aware that this would be a great album and we really felt that this is the way we would all be connected in the studio at the same time and things. It would be a lot easier, because in the early nineties, we didn't have the ability to do something like that, you know, and with this new job we've reached an important milestone in the history of At The Gates, and we're all proud of it. CR: In this album there are classics and people are waiting to enjoy them on their live setlist like Specter of Extinction, The Paradox, the epic Touched by the White Hands of Death, The Abstract Enthroned or Eternal Winter of Reason, how does the band releasing a great work like this in these strange circumstances? TL: It has been a surprising and favorable response to us so far, we have seen that many make purchases online with friends since the moment we announced the pre-orders of the album, and we have had very good comments through various reviews from various media around. of the world. According to the statistics of several sites and the label, this is the album with the highest sales of ATG since its return, and despite living in a pandemic, being isolated and in lockdown, we believe that all this effort will reach many more people, and we thank everyone that they have known how to value everything we have done so far. CR: The cover is by Eva Nahon.
Does At The Gates tell us that the world is living a nightmare that will cost us to wake up to this pandemic? Tomas, what is the concept behind this new album? TL: I consider all this to be a set what we have done for Nightmare, the lyrics, the cover art and the music portray the same emotions that are important to us, and Eva is a great artist, we gave her the idea about the music and we decided take it to a more complex, dark and cinematic level, and we wanted to reflect on how the human soul struggles in these times, and that it must deal with changes that are abrupt. When she introduced us to her cover we were fascinated with her work and we looked at this as a highlight for the new album. CR: One of the highlights for this album is the sound, the production is excellent wherever it is heard. What impressions do you have of the work that Jens Bogren, Andy LaRocque and Per Stålberg have done in the mixing and mastering process of Nightmare?
TL: Yes it was a great project, and we are very happy that you have heard and appreciated that detail. We had to try different things and instruments since we started the whole process, there are different arrangements and there are many details that need to be audible to the listener, so it was a meticulous and hard work putting all these pieces together, and we looked at Jens as the Mastermind when it comes to things like that, you know you have all the details in your head at the same time and it makes it all happen. Talking about Andy for me, working with him was a magnificent experience, he is one of the best guitarists in my opinion, and he contributed many interesting things to us about his instrument and shared with us how to be better musicians at that point. CR: This is your third work with Century Media
How does it feel to be part of one of the most important record companies in the world? By the way, many consider the band as one of the most symbolic artists of the label. TL: Talking about Century Media is talking about a label that has released classic albums by bands like Tiamat, Grave, Unleashed, in the same way the first Asphyx releases, from my point of view CM is a very important label, they had the seriousness and courtesy of making contact with us when we were preparing our meeting, and they suggested that we make an album with them, and that we were not afraid of living with a permanent contract, so to this day we feel free as artists, but at the same time we have creative freedom, and for that reason the label trusts us. We do not live as in the past of having pressure to present something in a certain period of time or for someone to listen and supervise what we are doing. They are 100% with everything, and for that reason we have maintained a very good working relationship, and especially with the people who work there, especially those who support the underground and old school gangs. That is the good thing about being with them. CR: 31 years of career, 7 studio albums, tours ... it's quite a story
Are you satisfied with everything you have achieved to date? Looking to experience new sounds in the At The Gates universe for future releases? Many consider that the band since their return years ago live a second youth, what do you think about this TL: I think we are here and now with this album, and those who know about the history of the band know about the effort that we have fought during all this time to reach this point in our career, and I agree with you and with many fans of We have improved many things since our return to the level of creativity, we consider that each album represents a starting point as people and musicians. We are on the premise that in the coming years we will offer high quality material, and that represents an interesting challenge in our development as a group. CR: In the discography of the band there are very good albums that for many are classics and that thanks to that many people began to know you
For example, on many continents Slaughter of the Soul is considered a cult album Is there a formula in the band to do work as important as these? Comments ... TL: Slaughter of the Soul was born at an important point in our career, we aspired to make an album like this, which in the end was done because we were looking for a different mechanics of writing and composing short songs, and at that moment we looked at all of that as a challenge that we had to overcome, even more so that we were very young in those years (laughs) and we looked at everything that was very difficult at that time. As time went by, we noticed that we improved with each album we released, and we had the mentality of moving on, not stopping. And we think it was the only option to do good things for the fans. CR: During this time of confinement many people have been left without work and with little money, the digital platforms at a certain point helped the bands while people resumed their jobs and so they could buy their CDS and Vinyl.
Piracy in recent months has been in great demand that unfortunately for those who cannot buy material this is their "cheapest option". What do you think of this situation that has affected bands and labels? TL: Well, I think we are aware that there have been many difficulties for many people since the beginning of the pandemic that lost their jobs, family and old friends, it has been very difficult to be isolated and much more complicated not being able to see your friends during all this time. Digital platforms and video channels have been like a savior in these difficult times, now that everything has relaxed a bit you can ask for an album, you can still get some songs for free. As an artist, like many of us, we are grateful for the platforms, they have served to cheer up the fans, because if you have lost your job you can listen to music on a free digital platform which is good, and with that later I would give the opportunity to buy a disk. We know that there are many people who fight within the industry so that the music reaches the people, and despite continuing in a pandemic that is a positive point for the bands, and for that reason there have been many releases. CR: Many bands around the world look to ATG as an influence.
What is your point of view of this generational handover where many bands mention you along with In Flames and Dark Tranquility as the Holy Trinity of Gothenburg Sound? TL: Yes, I mean, it's amazing, of course, always very flattering are the people who name you as an influence and who through the years consider us as an influential band. It is very gratifying as an artist to hear those beautiful words, of course, from the other bands you mention we are very good friends and we have shared paths since the first days, despite the fact that we were born in the same city, each one has taken a very different sound one band from the other, and many rejoice when they watch us perform together on a tour or at a festival. Definitely ATG's music has generated that interest, and that is why many bands follow in our footsteps maintaining their own identity and manifesting our sound in their proposals.
CR: In recent years, many bands hold special celebrations to revisit classics album tours. If the pandemic did not exist, they would be preparing a celebration for The Red in the Sky Is Ours turns 30 in 2022. Are you for or against this type of celebration, or do you have plans to launch a special anniversary edition? TL: It would be amazing to be able to play some shows with that album in its entirety. I also support the idea of a re-release of the album, the last vinyl edition had a very poor quality in both sound and art, so we really want to improve it and many would have reasons to get their hands on it again, so hopefully that can happen. Another problem we went through was the celebration of 25 years of Slaughter of the Soul, we had plans to tour several continents including Central and Latin America presenting the album played in full, far from all this being canceled the plans are postponed for the next year, so it would be the celebration but on its 27th anniversary (laughs), we have a lot to offer with Nightmare, but it is very possible that interesting projects will come to light for the fans in the coming months. CR: Has the band been contemplated soon as part of the promotion of the new album to present it in a streaming concert?
Are you in favor of the band doing concerts with these modalities, or are you of the opinion that it is best to wait for everything to normalize and play a concert face to face with the fans TL: Well, I suppose of course if worst comes to worst it would mean waiting longer for us to do live shows. Maybe we would think of doing something like that, but we are a band that enjoys live performances, and especially to feel and obtain the energy of people, and with a camera you don't get that (laughs), but the truth is I am not opposed to the The idea of making a transmission, at least it is a way of getting closer with people, but it is never the same to play a setlist with people than to do it in a room with cameras, and it would only be left to wait for everything to normalize and enjoy a show as it should of being. CR: Once this emergency is over, do you have plans to tour in Europe, the United States or Latin America for 2022, or are you waiting to reschedule pending dates? TL: We have planned to do some shows starting in December supporting the album release and hopefully we will see people again on those dates. In the same way we are preparing to receive our vaccines, so for now and with patience things will work out well and we are eager to go back to touring several countries later. CR: Tomas, what message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview?
In the same way, I want to thank you for the opportunity you gave me for ATG fans in Conexión Rock Radio. TL: I want to thank you Johonny for the interview and for the interest towards the band, also to the fans who always support us, and we play for them with our heart and passion, and when we return to play all that will be there, and not We would be nothing without you, again to all At The Gates fans, thank you very much for your support and especially with this new album. CR: Tomas, thank you for your time! Best of luck to you and your bandmates with this new album! We also thank our friends at Looters for making this talk possible with you, and we hope to speak again to follow up on the great story that At The Gates makes with great music! Have a perfect day at home, take care! TL: Thanks Johonny, a hug for you too, take care of yourselves all there at home! Special thanks to Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey at Looters for the opportunity granted in conducting this interview, and to Tomas Lindberg for his time in this conversation.
