August Burns Red
August Burns Red
Guardians and Defenders Who Watch from a Lighthouse A play on words that alludes to the important moments that this band lives in our international interviews that Conexión Rock Radio makes on its journey through various points around the planet, and that in this report without a doubt those who hear our guests for the first time They will already have them as favorites to follow them on their social networks or in their next live shows with an album that is considered by Metalcore lovers as one of the expected releases this year. Our stop is in Pennsylvania, United States, and it is there where we talk with John Benjamin "JB" Brubaker, Guitar of the band August Burns Red, who celebrate an important moment in their career when they present their new album called Guardians, and which is available worldwide via Fearless Records. The band was formed in 2003 and currently this is their ninth album on discography, and the current line-up is conformed by Jake Luhrs on vocals JB Brubaker - Lead Guitar, Brent Rambler - Rhythm Guitar, Dustin Davidson - Bass and Vocals, and Matt Greiner - Drums and Piano. Below, we share this and other interesting details with all of you: Conexion Rock Radio: John, how are you! Greetings from Honduras, Central America, it is an honor to have you here for our audience and readers who want to know the history and the next news that August Burns Red has for their fans this year, welcome! John Brubaker: Hello everyone! Here we are with our families safe, we live in a situation of isolation at the moment, so the most important thing is that everyone is well at home, and now we are just waiting to see what happens later, yes, like the rest, you know, and I imagine you are in a similar situation in your region, we send you our best wishes for this to improve. CR: Start the interview of this day in congratulate the band for the release of their new album called Guardians via Fearless Records, for the first days of April.
Many indicate that this is a perfect way to start 2020 with another great album by August Burns Red. What expectations does the band have on this new page for their story? JB: Well, I am glad that there is anticipation for the album, we are excited to release it and we put a lot of effort and time into creating this album, and from what we have heard, it is going far in the first reviews, and the comments of different media from The press makes people really enjoy it, and I think if you're a fan of the heavier side of August Burns Red, you'll really like Guardians because, in my opinion, it's the heaviest thing we've done since Messengers and Constellations, as a reference to our early years. CR: If Phantom Anthem was a highly acclaimed album by critics and fans, with this new album the band has managed to offer interesting surprises for Guardians
What details can you share about the new album? Are there separate stories or is it a concept album? JB: Yes, one of the things that was a little different for Guardians compared to our previous albums, was that we recorded it in two different sessions, we recorded it in the spring session in 2019, where we recorded the first eight songs that our Bassist had written Dustin Davidson and me. We were the only members of the band in the studio for that session and we shared all the songs written between each other, then we did our 10-year tour celebrating Constellations in the summer of 2019, and as soon as that tour ended, we went back to the studio and we recorded five more songs and we finished the album, we did the vocals, and drums, and we were able to basically spend more than two months working in the studio just to record this album, we must admit that it was most of the time we've spent, it's fun because It doesn't matter how long you have as a band in the studio, or you're going to use it all, and you're still going to feel that as you're relaxing, you're going to feel that anxiety with the process and details, but I'm really happy with the production on the sound. from the album, and we're really proud of it, and I can't wait for people to hear it. CR: Currently for this album you have worked with Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland
How do you feel about working with them again in the studio? JB: That's right, we made the record with Carson and Grant. They have been at the forefront of the process for all the albums we've made since 2012, and we made our Christmas album with them, which is Sleddin 'Hill, and then they also produced Rescue & Restore, Found in Far Away Places, and Phantom Anthem. They work in the same area where we live, so working with them is great, we have a great relationship with them, we are friends and we can treat the study as a job, I would like a daily job where we go, we go there for the Tomorrow, we work all day, we come home at night, we don't have to, we don't have to leave our families to go make the recordings right now. Working with them is a good and comfortable relationship because they understand the dynamics within our band, they know how to get the best out of each of us as individuals in our performances, and they have a great facility to work with resources and study, and a which I think is really advantageous to work with Carson and Grant, since you are not working with a single producer, but you are working with two, so there are two different recording teams in two different rooms at all times. They are able to work more efficiently, for example, while Jake was recording vocals with Grant, our drummer Matt was recording the drums in a separate room at the same time, and you generally have to do one thing at a time, but with them you can work more efficiently. CR: Interestingly in the band's timeline, each album is two years apart, except for this new one that has three. Themes like Paramount, Defender, Extinct by Instinct, The Narrative are awesome themes, a lot of people comment that this could be their best release in years. How have the fans' reactions been with the first singles released on the platforms? JB: Well, so far we have been excited by the response that people have been telling us that we are back with the old August Burns Red. We have heard that when we released Defender and understand that this is a really aggressive song, and there are people who think we've deviated from that sound as we get older, and I think maybe we've gotten more into the progressive side of metal and have lost some of the brutality of some of our early work, but Guardian is certainly a step up from it to be heavy and aggressive, it is certainly very heavy, I don't know what else to say. (laughs) CR: For the Defender video, many liked the concept the band has created for this single, based on the classic Marvel comics.
Is the band a fan of the heroes of the Marvel universe? JB: Yes, and in particular our guitarist Brent Rambler is a great comic book collector and was the brains behind the idea of video treatment, and I think by the name Defender you know it sounds like a superhero and Brent suggested we make a video lively, and that we had a superhero theme and we hired a director to take over the project, and I'm really excited about the way the video came out. I think it looks amazing and it's one of the best music videos ever made for the band in our history. CR: This is the 9th album in your history and the second with Fearless Records.
How does the band feel about being part of this label that takes things to a new level? JB: The folks at Fearless have been great to us, we've had an amazing working relationship, and I really think they helped take the band to a new level that we hadn't reached before, for example our last two last albums were nominated for a Grammy award, and that was a level of recognition that we've never reached before and I think the label is directly responsible for putting ourselves on the radar of a completely different audience, and on a different level like online marketing, were things that We had not experienced before, and that put us much further into perspective. CR: From your point of view, how could you evaluate the evolution of the band from its first days until today? Do you think it has been easy or difficult for August to obtain national or international recognition? JB: I feel like August Burns Red's career has been a very slow climb, we've been struggling for a long time as a band and we haven't gained popularity every night, we never had the boom that some bands experience, but we have had steady growth for the last 15 years or so, and with that we have accumulated good followers around the world and we are very grateful that many of our bands discovered us when we were young starting our career. Since the first two albums, like Thrill Seeker and Messengers, many fans have stayed with us, and followed our career on every album we've released, and I think we are very lucky in that regard to have such a dedicated fan base. CR: Is there any formula in the band to make high quality albums?
Everyone thinks that there is no underestimation in their discography, Constellations, Rescue & Restore, or Messengers, they are classics in every sense of the word, comments ... JB: There is no exact formula for our song composition, however, the goal for each album has been the same, and that is when we wrote songs and others that have had incomplete ideas and with a specific sound in mind. We write each song to make it the best in every respect, we care about one song at a time, and then we have enough material to put together an entire album, then we go and record the songs that we agreed on, and variants happen in the process like it sounds in this way and where we want to record for everything is different. The idea is to write the best songs and then put them together and make sense of the album, and that's what we've been doing throughout our career. CR: Many young Metalcore bands look at you as an influence, what do you think about it?
JB: We are honored, that is incredible and I feel that other bands look at August Burns Red as an influence on their music, it is an honor and we are grateful that they see us from that perspective. CR: How about burning a CD or DVD with this new live album? Would it be perfect for your discography? Many say August is more of a band in the studio than on a live show or vice versa. Comments ... JB: Well, I think there is a certain intensity that comes with the band when you record a live album, it's just not the same when you listen to a live recording when you can't really be there watching how it happens, we have a live album called Home that we recorded in 2010 in which we closed the touring cycle for Constallations, and I think it's a great album, but I don't know how much I'm interested in making more live records in the future. I love making albums in the studio and playing live, but I don't necessarily love making records live. CR: I want to ask you if they have special things for Guardians? Limited Edition with Sides B, or Bonus Tracks for editions outside the United States? JB: Yes, we actually have two extra songs that were not released in Guardians. I don't know if there are plans to make a special edition of the album, but we have more songs that we will release someday. We don't know at what time, but we do have a lot of hidden material (laughs) CR: Have fans ever asked the band for an alternative project such as an acoustic album?
JB: I think that would be really challenging for us because of the songs. I will speak for myself as a guitarrist, it would be difficult for me to play the songs on an acoustic guitar in the same way that I would play them on the electric guitar because I play the acoustic guitar in my opinion it is simply more difficult than playing the electric guitar, however We have made some modifications to the acoustic parts of the songs we have recorded. I don't know if you have heard some of them, but we enjoy doing that kind of thing in the studio, but I think that if we did it live we would be very bad at it, for that reason we are not doing it. CR: Once the emergency is over, do you have any plans for the next tours in Europe and America?
JB: Well, we have a plan in place, whether we can execute it or not, there is a lot of uncertainty as to how long this closure can last, but once the panorama can improve the conditions for a new agenda, everything will be possible for us and recover everything. This time wasted in festivals performances in various places, so it only remains to wait. CR: What message would you like to send to those who read us in this special interview? I want to thank you for the time you have given us in this report for Conexión Rock Radio. JB: We are very grateful to our fans worldwide and especially in Central and Latin America, who have taken the time to listen to our band, to follow their career and enjoy our music, and we hope they love our new album, and that they enjoy listening to it and appreciate it as we did at the time. To you Johonny and to Conexión Rock Radio for the time and interest in reaching out to us and echoing what we will do next, and again our best wishes for everyone in this world crisis, stay home. CR: Jake, thanks for your time! Best of luck to you and your bandmates with this new album! In the same way to our friends in Looters for putting an interesting band like August Burns Red on our sonic radar, we hope to speak with you again in the future! JB: We hope so, and greetings to your readers and audience! Thanks to Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey for their help with this report, and John Benjamin for the time given in this interview.
