AVANTASIA

AVANTASIA
A Musical Evening Among Moonflowers One of the most emblematic bands of Symphonic Power Metal appears in our international interviews, and for fans of the name that we will present below it´s synonymous with a legacy of genius, and that at the end of this 2022 presents us with a new work under his arm, seeking in this way a tremendous standing ovation from locals and strangers alike for this work that over time will be destined to be a classic in his discography. Our contact is as far as Germany, and there we talked with the great Tobias Sammet, the mastermind behind Avantasia, who in 2022 will offer us his new album A Paranormal Evening with the Moonflower Society, and who since its release has managed to position himself in the taste of people through reactions on their social networks, and various reviews by the specialized metal press worldwide. Avantasia, in addition to Sammet as a Vocalist and Composer, has world-famous collaborations, along with first-rate composers such as Sascha Paeth and Miro Rodenberg, names well remembered for their work with great bands such as Heaven's Gate, Rhapsody, Luca Turilli, Virgo, among others. We share with all of you about the production process of this new page in the history of Avantasia, and the concept that Tobias, in addition to an interesting retrospective of three decades in his musical career alternating projects that have consecrated him through the years such is the case of Edguy, and now after a long journey through great songs Tobias and his friends extend a cordial invitation to a magical A Musical Evening Among Moonflowers Conexion Rock Radio: Good morning from Honduras Tobias, thank you for accessing our interview on this occasion, and it is an honor to be able to share with Avantasia fans around the world the interesting surprises that the band has in this 2022, welcome! Tobias Sammet: Good afternoon from Germany, Johonny, despite the great time difference from one continent to another, it´s a joy to be able to talk for the first time with someone from Honduras, and here I´m ready for your questions. CR: Thanks Tobias, how do you feel about going back to playing on tours and festivals again after these two and a half years of forced absence due to the pandemic?
TS: It's great to be back on the road, but even more so to get back to work after a long time without being able to do anything, we've done some shows in various parts of Europe so far this year between festivals and outdoor concerts for 5000 people, so there weren't many shows in this time that we've been able to recover, but it felt great to be face to face with people again. After we all suffered through this shitty time it was really gratifying to be back doing gigs and getting my job back, although on the one hand it was productive being in lockdown to produce a new album that for the first time in my life was not responsible for delivering something on time and on time. At the same time, it was not responsible for the delays that this could entail. All this was the product of a virus that has attacked the entire world and that caught us off guard and that took a more problematic turn, the truth is that we were very worried about what would happen later. When we returned to tour again, I remember that we traveled to Spain to do our first post-pandemic show, and we were there, after two and a half years without leaving our homes and seeing the Spanish coast made my eyes wet with tears and I thought thank God we got our jobs back and I didn't know this would happen again, and I realized how much pressure and how much mental challenge I had to face in all this time, and in the end all of this is a great relief for my mind, my soul and my wallet (laughs) CR: Let's talk about the new album that Avantasia is presenting and it's called A Paranormal Evening with the Moonflower Society, a title that would fit perfectly in a book or a movie, it's album number 9 in their discography and it was released on the 21st of October through Nuclear Blast Records, what reactions have you had from people who have heard it on physical and digital? It is already considered by many to be one of the most notable releases at the end of this year.
TS: First of all thanks for your words, Johonny, I have the feeling that people liked the album, and for me that is a sign of great relief because I am a person who makes music for people, it is my therapy and the You see my joy, and I know what people want and expect from these songs, although I don't think much about expectations, my job is to make people happy, for me that is the most important thing and I put my best effort, passion and power that you have to be able to transmit those feelings to many people when they listen to your material, and that generates an impact on you that makes you feel happy yourself. You can never know if people may or may not like your work, I mean those who react on my website and social networks, in my case I don't delete comments because if I did that, I would be really an idiot. So far everyone has loved the new album, I've seen reviews from sites that give it a 6.5 out of 10 rating, negative reviews or people who don't know how to value music don't matter to me. I can only say that every album that has been released including this new one is made for people who love my music, and that includes those who don't like Avantasia's proposal. That is my approach and it is interesting to see the reactions of people around the world; on the other hand, I am very happy because in my career with both Edguy and Avantasia this is my 19th album. Being 44 years old and making 19 albums and Many EP´s makes you remember important moments like Vain Glory Opera, Superheroes, King of Fools, Lost in Space and many more things that I have done in all these years. And after all that time making music, people come up to you and tell you that this is one of the best albums you've made in your life, and that for me is a compliment for a story that I've lived in 25 years and reflected in 19 albums, so I feel very happy and very honored that they can value your career in that way. CR: Many people have followed you since the days of Edguy, and they have had great and fun times, one of them was the video for Superheroes where the band was chasing bunnies in Bunnyville, everyone with rifles and you chasing the girls with a net (laughs)
TS: I'm pretty sure we wouldn't be allowed to make a video like this nowadays. Some people would probably cancel us if we made a video like that, but you know, back then we were innocent kids fueled by testosterone wanting to take over the world, and you wanted to spend the day with women in lingerie and bunny ears, as stupid as that sounds, that was all we wanted to do and I think it was a very innocent little video of course today some people say you can't show something like that and we did it that's what it was like to be young at the time and as you say it was a fun part of our youth make that video. CR: Great moments that are part of your story Tobias, many think that Moonglow and Moonflower are possibly part of a conceptual trilogy, what details can you share with us?
TS: Well, I don't know if these two releases can be together in any way, although they both follow the same approach and both have a concept in their music and story, but at the same time there is no plot connection between Moonglow and this new release. I work despite the fact that they share arts and illustrations that have an individual character with each other. In the songs they reflect stories and metaphors related to the moon and the night, about how half the world wakes up and the other sleeps, that's what Moonglow talks about, while Moonflower talks about songs that will be hymns dedicated to people who have difficulties to face a society in daylight when really in a nighttime environment in the dream or being outside in a clear sky in the starlight makes this album very imaginative, that comes alive and speaks to you of a person living this type of situation, and that in the light of the moon you can be at peace with yourself, be sincere and express what you feel about society these days and the fear of not fitting in with other people. I consider this album a little more personal, and here we seek to tell different stories, I think people will seek to make a connection in stories between this one and the previous one. CR: I don't know if you're a fan of Tim Burton's or Charles Dickens' work, but from the moment we heard Avantasia we felt like there's a perfect cinematic band to your music, and that it could fit perfectly in a movie.
Are there any writers or film directors who are your influence to be able to make these tremendous albums, especially this new one? TS: Within all audiences that consume music, books and movies there are several things in common, in my case I am a great lover of horror movies from the 16th and 17th centuries, and there will always be details that can inspire you to make music , one of those points of influence are the Victorian Gothic Novels, for me they are impressive for how they do them and the stories they offer through their pages. There is a lot of ironic tone in what is exposed, how things are perceived to be upside down, and I consider in these novels a generally abnormal content, such as the character of the underdog, it´s always a slightly abnormal figure, a figure that he has difficulty fitting into his environment and that's something I identify with, and I've always felt a bit of what he didn't want to build into his plot. I don't want to be different, but I often get the feeling that if you see things differently from your surroundings, you are treated like an outcast, and in our society, there is not much room for people who have their individual approach. I don't know how to express myself, but I could always relate to characters like Victor Van Dort of the Corpse Bride or Edward Scissorhands. Here we could have all the history related to those people. CR: On every album you've made over the years, guests are the surprise element in Avantasia's discography, and Moonflower is no exception. What impressions do you have of the musicians who have participated on this occasion, especially Floor Jansen and Ralf Sheepers?
TS: They are my friends and they all have something in common that I have known them for a long time, so I would really call this project “Toby and Friends”, it's not like I contact someone and introduce myself “My name is Tobias Sammet, I am a German musician and I would like to work with you”, here things are different because in each song I compose I think about who could carry the notes perfectly, for example Ralf Scheepers has a leading role in The Wicked Rule the Night, I asked him to sing it because I think he has the right voice for the song, just like with Floor in Kill the Pain Away and Misplaced Among the Angels. Although I must mention that in most of the tours I have counted on the talents of great vocalists like Bob Catley, Ronnie Atkins, Eric Martin, Jorn, Michael Kiske, they are all my friends and I can see them as a team with which you can trust, but we have also forged a family bond because they are very great people in each of their respective areas, I can say that they are the best in the world within the music industry, so working with these people and having them sing in each of my songs has given me a great opportunity to give a diversity of voices to the songs that appear on each of these albums, and as I told you recently, I see them as the best of the best in music. history of music, but I am a lucky person to be able to work with real friends, with people I know professionally and personally, I see all this as a blessing, and this band of friends and family should really call “Toby and his Friends” CR: Which vocalists would you like to invite for a future Avantasia album?
What do you think of having Glenn Hughes, Ian Gillan, Rob Halford, Sebastian Bach, Jon Oliva or Bruce Dickinson? What do you think about this…? TS: I have tried by all means to have Bruce Dickinson, but unfortunately the answer has been no, since in recent years he has been focused on promoting his book, his monologues, his solo project and with Iron Maiden, so for now I don't think anything can happen. For the recording of Ghostlights I tried to contact Glenn and Sebastian, unfortunately he didn't want to participate, I sent him the song and he sent me the demo. I've had a chance to talk to Sebastian before and I try to find a good approach, and the demo sounded like an old Skid Row ballad, and here's the funniest thing about all of this, there was a financial deal and everything was arranged, especially with Glenn and I wanted to give him that merit that he was the protagonist in a song, although for my part it was a brave move to be able to contact him, at the moment he heard the track he said that he did not like it and did not want to participate, and he was honest on his part letting me know that, and I appreciate Glenn's sincerity in my intention to have him invited, and I don't take these rejections personally, I think it's perfect if you don't like doing it, to me that's absolutely fine to do a decision to do or not do something. I honestly don't have a wish list at this point in my life, I just want to make the music I love and to continue working with talented musicians and singers who can give those songs the soul they need, and in my case with Avantasia to count with those people and who are committed to giving everything for everything and who seek to be able to fulfill my dream, and thanks to this I am happy and have the joy of being able to work with great people on each of my albums. CR: It´s very interesting that talented people form their projects with an orientation towards Opera Rock, having as guests musicians and vocalists mixing various genres, an example of this is Arjen Lucassen from Ayreon, Beto Vazquez Infinity from Argentina, and you with Avantasia, how do you feel in being part of this type of project that has managed to conquer many people around the world with its innovative proposals?
TS: I don't really think about these things, I am aware of what Ayreon have done in all these years, I know Arjen and he is a very nice person and he is very good at what he does with his band, so at that point I know of his work and especially the concept of having several singers in a project, which breaks all stereotypes at a musical level. In my case with Avantasia I have spent almost 24 years of my life and I consider it a very special project, and as a musician and composer I seek to overcome all kinds of obstacles now that I have a band and work with nine vocalists, it´s really a special experience. CR: There is a character loved and respected by all: Michael Kiske. As we all know Michael was off the map for many years, until we heard The Metal Opera Pt I it was a surprise to hear him, many say that thanks to you Kiske would sing metal again, and we know that Helloween is a great influence for Avantasia.
How was the contact between you and Kiske? The world owes you thanks to that clever move. TS: One of the main reasons for the birth of Avantasia was to have a great vocalist like Michael Kiske, and for more than 20 years he is part of my family. I remember when I met him, I asked him if he wanted to sing metal again? Because I thought he's the best Power Metal singer of all time, and all of a sudden, he's gone, out of business, and I regret the waste that the voice of an iconic song like Eagle Fly Free has disappeared off the map for several years. So, I decided to approach his fan club and was able to contact his president and we maintained communication for several weeks, until the opportunity to talk with him arose and I proposed that he return to sing, despite little interest in returning to the stage. I insisted that he return to the stage. That approach was the beginning of our friendship, and Kiske ended up agreeing to participate with me, and that response was the consecration of a great dream, and once Metal Operas I and II were released, we felt that we both enjoyed making music again. It was an experience that we both enjoyed and that thanks to it would strengthen our friendship over the years to the point of being a vocalist for all the band's albums and participating in many tours around the world. That special bond manifested itself in quite complicated situations, for example when he did not feel well due to his throat or a fever, he was always willing not to look bad with the Avantasia fans, when he asked him to take a break on he would only reply "I'm doing it for you because you're my friend", and that would basically make that friendship very sincere between the two of us, and I consider Michael to be a very charming person, intelligent, besides being someone with a good heart, I really love him , and I am very happy that years ago he returned to Helloween even if that means he can no longer tour with me, and the truth is that for me this has been the best thing that has happened to Power Metal, and especially to Helloween, and people feel happy with what they have now, I consider that without Helloween Power Metal would not exist, and Michi's return to Helloween was the best thing that could have happened in recent years, despite the fact that Kiske is full time with the band, for Avantasia it is a great sacrifice not being able to count on him for our next tours despite the fact that he always worked with me in the studio, I am a die-hard fan of Helloween and I can say that now things are correctly put in their place.
CR: Great history you have with Kiske in all these years, for many the privileged voice of metal par excellence.
Tobias, with this new album, do you have plans to tour Latin America? Many people clamor to see an Avantasia show in our countries TS: By 2023 I think it will be a very big challenge for Avantasia to be able to play in other continents, we really want to be in several countries in South America and other cities in Central and Latin America. We already have a presentation scheduled in Brazil and I think more are being announced for the months of April and May 2023. I still don't have details, but our agents are already working to organize an agenda for next year, one thing is for sure, Johonny, there is already a tour in progress, and we hope to be able to announce several surprises for Latin American fans in the coming weeks. CR: As you know, there are two albums that people consider to be basic pillars in the Avantasia discography, and I mean the Metal Operas, both of which are 20 years old, Part I which was 2001 and Part II also 20 but in this year.
Taking advantage of the fact that we have a new album in hand, do you plan to include classic songs from these two albums in the set or are you looking to make a special edition for those who want to collect these releases, especially on vinyl? TS: We always play a lot of songs from those two albums, especially the first one, they will always appear in our setlists tracks like Avantasia, Reach Out For The Light, Breaking Away or Farewell to name a few examples, but I think it is not necessary to tour anniversary of these two albums because we have several albums and making a strict selection of tracks is another point to take into account, for that reason we seek to make everyone happy with what we plan to offer once we start touring with Moonflower Society. For that reason I would avoid playing 10 or 12 songs from those two albums, since with what we have it could result in an interesting mix, and I have to be honest with you Johonny, both albums are not my favorites in the band's discography, but I have them in a special place in my heart, since thanks to the Metal Operas I was able to become a professional musician, which later could expand many things with Edguy and from there I was able to earn money making music, since previously nobody bet a penny, and from the moment they paid me that was to combine Christmas, birthdays and Easter in a single moment, and that's when I understood that being a musician was the way to make a living. So thanks to the Metal Operas I understood that I should aspire for more in the future and be able to live my life with many talented people, which is why there are many albums released over the years, it is very possible that editions of those albums in various formats, but a tour revisiting only those two albums would definitely be out of the question. CR: At the end of this interview, Tobias, your final words for the people who have enjoyed this interview, and I want to thank you for the opportunity to talk with you all the way to Germany, may this be the first of many interviews we wish to hold with you in the history that Avantasia makes and will make in the future with great albums
TS: Thank you very much, Johonny, for the great work you do to spread the word in your region and to promote my music. I send a big hello to the fans of Honduras and all of Latin America, we hope to be able to play in their cities very soon. , since many love Avantasia's music, and Avantasia loves being able to play in all those countries, and I am very grateful for the opportunity that everyone gives me to be able to come into their lives and be able to do what I am most passionate about and that we be a reason for happiness every day, thank you for your constant support, and we hope to see all of you on our tour in 2023.
