AXEL RUDI PELL
A Chest Full of Rough Diamonds Conexión Rock Radio in its international interviews brings you again an interesting interview for those who want to know about current events and future plans that many artists around the world prepare for their fans, either in this case with releases or tours once the global situation caused has been normalized. due to the Covid 19 pandemic, and it is certain that many are hungry for concerts and the interesting works that appear throughout this turbulent 2021. On our world tour we reached Bochum, Germany And that is where Axel Rudi Pell welcomes us in his studio to share important details about the release of his new album, the 20th album in his career called Diamonds Unlocked II, which will be released at the end of July 2021 via Steamhammer, and that this time Axel and his bandmates present us with a selection of classics that are covered in their style, thus leaving the expectation very high so that fans hope to enjoy these songs on the one hand on their tours in alive, and on the other hand to be part of a new page in his already consecrated career that began in 1989. Currently the band is made up of Volker Krawczak- Bass, Axel Rudi Pell- Guitars, Ferdy Doernberg- Keyboards, Johnny Gioeli- Vocals, and Bobby Rondinelli- Drums. In this conversation with Axel we talked about the expectations that the band has with this new album, the selection of the songs, how the pandemic has impacted on their tour plans, their stance on the changes it has caused in the labels and the bands. in several continents, curiosities of his discography, and the future plans that he seeks to make with his fans where he returns with a new page in his history with A Chest Full of Rough Diamonds Conexión Rock Radio: Axel, greetings from Honduras, Central America! From here we send our good wishes that everything is well at home, and it is an honor to speak with you at this opportunity to share with our readers the news that your band has for its fans this year, welcome! Axel Rudi Pell: Thank you Johonny, a pleasure to talk with a person from far away, and we reciprocate with the good wishes that all of you there are well and safe with this problem. CR: Thanks Axel, we started this interview with good news for the fans of the band.
His new album Diamonds Unlocked II will be released worldwide in late July via Steamhammer. Everything indicates that 2021 will be an important year in the history of the band. What are your expectations with this new work? ARP: I am waiting for this album to be gold and platinum around the world (laughs), and here we are all waiting for the release moment to come, it is not a work of unreleased songs and we feel very good in making this project, now only It remains to hope that the fans like what we have prepared this year. For my part, I am satisfied with the entire process so far. CR: Since 2020, the world has been confined due to the Covid 19 pandemic that has caused everything to literally stop with no tours ... or live shows How do you as a band feel about releasing an album in these circumstances? ARP: We felt that it was necessary to do something, since as everyone knows everything is stopped, so at that point we had to wait for us to go on tour again, and we decided to take advantage of recording in the studio and making a cover album that in the end everything went much easier. CR: This is the second part of Diamonds Unlocked, the first was released in 2007
Everyone will think: what is Axel Rudi Pell's intention behind Diamons Unlocked? A trilogy ... an anthology? ARP: I have no idea to be honest (laughs), so like you said, everything could go on a second thought, maybe it could release a third part in the future, everything is unpredictable, but there is nothing concrete so far with this new album. CR: For this new compilation there are interesting versions that people are looking forward to hearing live: There Only One Way to Rock (Sammy Hagar's version), Lady of the Lake (Rainbow's version), She's a Lady (Paul Anka's version), Paint It Black (The Rolling Stones Cover), I Put a Spell on You (Screamin 'Jay Hawkins cover) and Eagle (Abba cover) are the highlights of Unlocked II
Was the selection of these classics easy or difficult? ARP: It was actually very easy to choose, you know? Because I actually made a huge list of at least 20 songs, and it was all a process of listening to the original covers and seeking the opinion of the band, what do you think of that song? Of course, this is great, and the process of selecting the songs for this album was very fun, there we had discovered interesting things to adapt to our style, such as Black Cat Woman by Gerordie. Even Bobby, our drummer commented until now I listen to that song, it seems to be made by a British band from the early 70's, so we decided to take that as a challenge and in the end everything turned out very well. CR: This is your twentieth job with Steamhammer.
How do you feel being part of one of the most important record companies in the world? By the way, a whole story with them ARP: Working with them has been very satisfactory, since I have my freedom to be able to make albums without pressure or problems, the advantage here that they allow me to do everything without having to talk to them or consult periodically, since some companies give you They cause problems at the production level and it is always witty to hear comments that “this song sucks”, or “they should change the sound” when you have everything complete, for that reason I love working with Steamhammer, since I can present the album now produced, and I have no need to present demos and things like that. So everything there is great and I have a special affection for the label, they are very professional with what they do, and for me that counts a lot. CR: Thirty-two years of career, 20 studio albums ... it's a whole story that, far from ending, seeks to continue with good music!
Are you satisfied with everything you have achieved to date? Looking to experience new things for future releases? ARP: For now we always try to evolve and do new things in our sound and share details for the fans in this interview, for example. There are many things we have in mind to do as this cover album is released. One thing is for sure, I'll be back in the studio probably in December and the next album will probably come out in the spring of next year, between March or May of next year it will be released, so there is a lot to do at the moment. CR: For fans of the band, this line-up has been successful in releasing excellent albums. Is there a formula within the Axel Rudi Pell universe to do high quality work?
ARP: The secret behind the success of the band is that we do not live together, you know that we are a band with members from other countries, I have two Americans in the band, even the keyboard player lives a 3 hour drive away from you and the advantage is that despite the distances we always keep in touch, we do not rehearse three times a week or anything like that, we are a very united band and that is where the chemistry lies, and that is there to share musical mastery, mutual respect , fellowship, making jokes, and knowing what's going on in the world is great. CR: Currently, the pandemic has forced the bands and the industry to reinvent themselves and survive.
In the case of you as a band, do you have any plan or strategy to stay afloat monetarily? ARP: Not really. We do not know what could happen in reality with my pending, we are hoping that life returns to normal next year that everyone can wait to go to concerts, you know, without wearing a mask and not having distance between people it would be great for the scene in general, and I hope it happens soon. I've already had my vaccine shots so I'm fine right now, but now there are some people who didn't actually have a chance to have the access to vaccines and I hope this happens soon so that everything is back to normal next year. CR: If the pandemic did not exist today, in 2021 the 30 years of Nasty Reputation would be celebrated, in the same way that Eternal Prisoner in 2022 celebrates three decades.
If the situation returns to normal, do you have any plans to do a special tour reviewing these two albums or would you release special editions with bonus material? ARP: I really don't think I play those two albums in their entirety. Many people hate that bands do those things, and I really don't understand why people think like that (laughs) many might consider an excellent idea or in other cases they would re-record their material when in reality you have a lot to focus on on one or two albums for a tour. Many musicians would say "I don't want to make that album live", "I don't like it" and they deny for many things to the point of cursing that moment (laughs) Regarding a special release, unfortunately I don't have things saved from the time, so that partly represents a problem to be able to carry out a project of these characteristics. CR: What is your point of view on the trends that many bands use streaming shows to get closer to people in this confinement. Are you for or against this type of modality? Or will you wait for all this to normalize to meet the fans face to face
ARP: Currently it is complicated for us, because two members of the band live in America. We do not know with this matter of travel restrictions if getting together will be possible under these conditions to do a live show. And many people prefer to reserve themselves to be present at a live show and have people shout and enjoy the moment than others are sitting on their sofa or at a table watching everything from a screen and people saying “ok, that's cool " or " I want rock and roll "which is different (laughs) so I have nothing against people who use those things really. CR: As a curious fact in the history of the band most of this lineup has been from the beginning until today, except for Johnny Gioeli who has been with you since 1998, and the most recent element in the timeline is Bobby. Rondinelli, who has been with you since 2013. What impressions have you had of these changes that have been important and for the good of the band both in chemistry and discography?
ARP: I appreciate all of them! You know, it's great to work with Bobby, he's one of the best drummers I've ever worked with in my life, and he's probably the most perfect, likewise with Johnny when I present him with new ideas, and I say “Hey Johnny, look these riffs are for a new song ”, and he replies that the idea is magnificent and this is great, I love the music you compose, for that reason every time I write or compose songs I have Johnny's voice in my mind and It is very easy to work with him. I have had the experience of having other talented musicians such as Mike Terrana, Jorg Michael, Bob Rock and Jeff Scott Soto who have brought some great things to bear all these years. So with the current line-up things are going very well and we have all been satisfied with everything we have achieved so far. CR: Piracy in recent months has been in high demand for those who unfortunately cannot buy physical material due to not having a job and are looking to digital as a "cheaper option". What do you think of this situation that has affected bands and labels? ? ARP: I can't really say much about that because he's too political for me from my point of view, so it's strange, it's very strange, you know I could have all the songs and leave them free to the public and say don't buy them, get them free , but musicians have to be paid based on a product, so that is always a problem, although you could give away anything for free you really cannot and even more so under these conditions. I'll be frank with you Johonny, record companies want to make money, and as a musician you have to make a living. This is very strange. CR: Axel Rudi Pell- an influence for new guitarists around the world who for some reason listened to one of your records and was the reason for them to start playing to see in you a role model. What do you think about this?
ARP: I love it very much, to everyone around the world I say thank you very much, but for me, I have always been a normal guitarist who admires the talent of others, and that motivates me to write some songs, that's all when people say you are the reason you started playing guitar and I say thank you with all my heart for what you say. I am always in gratitude to people who appreciate the work one does, a legacy and a history. CR: Once this emergency is over, do you have plans to tour Europe, the United States or Latin America in 2022, or are you waiting to reschedule pending dates?
ARP: The fans are always important to us, I am already very excited to be back to play again, and for people to enjoy what we do at a concert. Within our plans we must prepare a calendar of live shows for 2022, so next year we will play live again for everyone, if everything went well and without problems we would start in April of next year to perform at some festivals during the summer and then be back on the road in the fall around September or October next year. In fact, I cannot say anything about it because we have to wait and see how everything will happen for the tour that is planned to be organized in order to recover all this time lost on the road. CR: In recent years, especially for the United Kingdom, Brexit has been applied, and this would imply more tax burdens not only for British citizens, but for those from the rest of Europe, and many artists would be harmed by this measure, what do you think about this problem? ARP: You are absolutely right there, we believe that this measure is very harmful for everyone, you know, although for some politicians who have previously approved this they seek to wash their hands now, many would tell them get the fuck out! (laughs), and they would think that the rest of the world seeks to boycott their plans, or have some Germans tell them they are fucking idiots. We would never understand what they do, but we have friends there in the UK that we really appreciate, and we hope the measure can be abolished for the good of all of them. CR: Axel, what message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview?
I want to thank you for the time granted on this day to do this special report for Conexion Rock Radio, again, an honor to have talked with you. ARP: Thanks to you Johonny for having me here in your interview, and to all the fans around the world take care, stay healthy and enjoy good rock at home! CR: Axel, thank you for your time! Best of luck to you and your bandmates with this new album! Also our thanks to the folks at Steamhammer for granting this opportunity with you, we hope to speak again in the future! Have a perfect day at home! And take care! ARP: The same for you and for all your kind readers there on your radio and on your website. A hug from Germany!
