BENIGHTED
BENIGHTED
A Repression with Much Brutality Conexión Rock Radio in its international interviews brings Brutal Death Metal and Grindcore lovers to one of the bands that by their own merit has earned their place in the extreme metal scene worldwide, and that in the middle of a pandemic come hand in hand with a new work that for many of his fans is considered one of his best works to date. We talked to France, and this time we talked to Julien Truchan, Vocalist and founder of the band BENIGHTED, who are back in action with their new album called Obscene Repressed, released at the beginning of April via Season Of Mist, and who According to our guest, it has been a challenge to launch this new work in these circumstances, but thanks to the support of its fans it has had an excellent reception at a general level, leaving as a promise once the sanitary conditions improve to be able to perform a concert where so many bands as a public they are connected in an extreme communion celebrating this part of their history that they share together with Pierre Arnoux- Bass, Emmanuel Dalle and Fabien Desgardins- Guitars, and Kévin Paradis- Drums. Next, we share with all of you this interview with a lot of Repression and Brutality flavor directly to your face! Conexión Rock Radio: Julien, good afternoon to France! Johonny González from Conexion Rock Radio greets you from Honduras, we send you our best wishes that all is well at home with your families and bandmates with this pandemic, and it is an honor to speak with you in this special report and share with our readers here in Latin America of the important news that Benighted has for his fans this year, welcome! Julien Truchan: Greetings from France Johonny, thank you for contacting me. In reality, things here are slowly picking up again, traffic and circulation are beginning to normalize with the appropriate measures, here many people are taking advantage of these few days to take vacations, although the government has announced that we should not lower the guard, as a second wave of Covid 19 is possibly coming, and this could generate another hit globally. Currently I work in a hospital, and there is a lot of skepticism about what could happen if a new wave of infections arrived, what we have to do for now is to take care of yourself, and prepare again if all this happens again. CR: Here in Latin America I will tell you that things have been very difficult, the continent itself, adding the United States ended up being the most affected by the pandemic, millions of infected and thousands of deaths, and there has been news that possibly this new wave is possibly stronger and more deadly than the first despite a vaccine being developed. JT: The truth is, there is no source that can give correct information on that point, as I told you, I work in a hospital and there are different opinions about reopening and everything else, although the strongest thing happened, so I consider that the point here It is not to be scared, there was a great comparison with what happened in the first months of this year when the pandemic made its curve first in Europe with many deaths, but with the passage of time it normalized, hopefully this same effect will happen in Latin America, it will be a matter of time before everything returns to normal. CR: Start today's interview by congratulating the band on the release of their new album called Obscene Repressed, released in the first days of April through Season Of Mist, how do you feel about the good reactions from critics and fans towards the album? Everything indicates that it will be a great year for the band despite the emergency we are currently facing.
How do you feel about exceeding expectations with this new album? By the way, album number 9 in Benighted history JT: Thank you for your words, it means a lot to us. We were thinking whether or not it was the right time to release the album and promote ourselves, but the fans have responded in a good fucking way, and they liked the final effort we put into the studio, they had very positive reactions, and that is appreciated . The only frustration is that we are desperate to play again (laughs) and we want to play the album live, to the point that many have already said that this is our best work so far, and we have enough reasons to play these tracks in a concert. CR: We want to know if you considered whether it was a good or bad idea to release this album in the midst of a pandemic? Was it a decision of the label or the band or was it for both parties to make this move that for many could be risky? JT: We think it was good to launch it. Currently there are many bands that are forcing to delay their releases until the end of this year or the beginning of the next, and that in the long run would saturate the market with new products. So as an advantage, the first thing was to launch it on a digital platform, we know that many people do not have the money to buy it, and that people have time to listen to it and digest the songs, and when they have the opportunity to buy the album to finally be able to do them share with the public at a concert, so that would be our perception on that point about whether or not to release the new album. CR: For this new album they have special guests, in this case Karsten Jäger, Sebastian "Grimo" Grihm, and the great Jamey Jasta, all on vocals.
What experiences did you have in working with these talented singers? JT: Well, with them we have different stories when we started to compose and think about who would be the guests for the album. The first to agree to sing with us was Karsten from the band Disbelief, we have been friends for many years and when I sent him the invitation I gladly accepted, and I contributed and agreed ideas on the composition of the track Mom, I Love You the Wrong Way (laughs ) at first I wanted to have an Obituary-style voice style, and tried to emulate his vocal range, but it was best to bring it into the studio. The situation was very funny because Jäger told me "when I prepared the new Disbelief album you will be one of the guests", so I said Ok! (laughs) With Grimo we have been friends for a couple of years, and he is the vocalist of the band Cytotoxin, and appears on the track The Starving Beast, his participation was very natural, and we are very grateful for it. He's a great vocalist, he has an amazing voice, and it was great to have both of them, and he would be ideal at the earliest opportunity to have them both at a concert and sing these songs.
And finally Jamey, is the main surprise and appears singing in Implore the Negative.
The story with him was very funny, years ago we met at a festival, I wanted to get closer to him, only that Jamey did not know who he was. So as time went by the recording sessions came and I thought: who could be a guest on this album? And a friend sent me a podcast where they interviewed him, and he commented that he was open to collaborating with other bands in the future, so I wasted no time and decided to send an email with their representatives at Nuclear Blast, I told them about the album project and of the intentions of having him as a guest, and wanted to know his response to the proposal. I thought: Jamey is one of the busiest guys I know, he may not have time to respond to my request, so I thought that a refusal would take it personally seeing the large amount of work he has with his band and other alternative projects. So as the days went by, the emails arrived and we began to come and go in communications, and to introduce ourselves through that medium (laughs) “Hi, I'm Julien, and I have a band called Benighted, and I would be interested that you participate as a guest for our new album ”everything was too formal at the time (laughs) he agreed and I sent him the tracks for the song, in three weeks he forwarded them to me and he felt satisfied with the song that was selected for him. He's a fucking accessible person, very professional with his schedule, anyone would think he did this for money, no, he did this out of passion for music, and I have tremendous respect for him. CR: By the way, this is the first album with Kévin Paradis on drums and Fabien Desgardins on guitar, although they previously played on the EP Dogs Always Bite Harder than Their Master.
How do you guys feel about having Kevin and Fabien in the band now? JT: All this happened a couple of years ago when we were on tour with The Black Dahlia Murder, at that moment Kevin Foley told us of his intention to leave the band, in the same way Olivier Gabriel, so immediately at the end of the tour we decided to look replacements, and Kevin and Fabien came to the band who gave an important turn to the sound, and with the EP it was their letter of introduction, and the rest of us are happy with the change we have had in recent years and this represents a test for everyone in knowing how long we can last, for that reason the change has been for the better. CR: Let's talk about the concept behind Obscene Repressed, we know that you are talking about a young man with a cleft palate who suffers from Oedipus Syndrome, and who on the album describes his delusional behavior.
We know you work in a mental hospital. Is the story of this album based on something real or a personal experience? JT: Actually, yes, when I wrote the concept of Repressed, I thought of images of a cleft palate and very severe damage to the face, so I started to write ideas of what the story would be, and relate that to a patient who had problems with his mother because of that deformity. In the album, when you listen to everything, the story is told and very interesting details appear that will attract attention based on that delusional situation, so the story has real parts and things that I have experienced in my work environment. CR: I must tell you that on this album there are highlights like Obscene Repressed, Brutus, Implore the Negative and Casual Piece of Meat, or the short jazz section on Muzzle and the wonderful moments on The Starving Beast, Implore the Negative and Scarecrow You have currently released Nails as a promo video, do you have plans to release another single soon? JT: Not for now, because we are too busy working on rescheduling new concerts, actually maybe next year, if we have time, we will choose another song at the end, making a concept video takes time and a lot of ideas, but when that moment comes we will provide surprises and visually impact with another single. CR: Recently the band released a single called Serve to Deserve, we understand that this was to help the Rock N'Eat concert hall in Lyon.
What details can you share with us about the reception of this single? JT: Anyone would think that the song was left off the album, so when we released it as a digital single we decided that all the proceeds go to the benefit of Rock N'Eat, the idea is to make this place survive, since with this situation From the pandemic they have done badly economically, so a friend told me, why not do a campaign to support them, such as a Crowfinding, and that people can donate regardless of the amount, and we know that this place in recent years He has supported bands, despite being a small place it has a good stage to play. We are good friends of the owners of the place, and it is a concern as musicians that these places are open and that people can come with confidence to enjoy a good time with the bands that play there, for that reason we made this initiative for them. CR: With this global emergency caused by COVID-19, many concerts and festivals were canceled, as well as delays in releases.
Being a musician and part of the band, are you aware that this emergency could affect them financially due to the possible drop in sales? And on the other hand the fans who are supporting them in these circumstances ... comments. JT: As a musician our first priority is the fans. We know of the bad times that we are all going through because of Covid, many jobs have been lost, and some gangs are going through severe financial problems. Many are looking for a way to survive with the few resources they have, we must thank the fans who have generously supported the band by buying our merchandise, they have the passion and conviction to believe in us, and for that we are proud of them and of the support they have given to the entire scene in its different genres. CR: With Repressed this is your 5th work with Season Of Mist, we know you started working with them since 2011 when you released the classic Asylum Cave
How does the band feel to be part of one of the most important labels in the world? JT: We are very satisfied with our working relationship with Season, they have given us very crazy but fun ideas such as the boxset edition that when you open it you will hear a pig squeak (laughs) is like when you open a birthday card to have an idea. We want to work with them in the coming years, they have a team that keeps things well, we have constant communication with them, and they are a great label, as a band we want to release several albums with them in the future. CR: 22 years of career, 9 studio albums ... it's quite a story Are you satisfied with all that has been achieved to date? Are you looking to experience new sounds in the Benighted universe? JT: When you look back you think about the whole journey and the things we have done so far. We are experienced musicians, and we have tried to maintain our own identity during all these years, and we do not allow ourselves to be influenced by things that are only fashionable or for the moment, we owe all that effort to the fans, and we do not seek to be popular or try to to be superior to other bands and all the cliche that is had in comparing things, or to say that we compete against bands of Death or Black Metal, that is absurd. So don't worry that every album doesn't go in a monotonous way if you think about it that way, we've done very aggressive jobs, and the next ones will be much more brutal with the promise of breaking necks at a concert or a fucking moshpit (laughs ) that if we can promise you. CR: Is there a formula in the band to make high quality albums? Everyone thinks that with this new album the band reinvents itself, to the point of saying that Represed is the older brother of iconic works such as Insane Cephalic Production or Carnivore Sublime, without leaving aside Identisick that many say we have bloody classics in our hands. What do you think of it? JT: Well, it all lies in the change that the band has in its line-up, when there are new members they bring interesting ideas in relation to the structures of the songs. Being the only member of the band that has been there since the beginning, I have given the rest of the band creative freedom to contribute to the songs we make every time we do a demo or take them to the studio, so as for me Voice can have influences from Black Metal, Death Metal, Grindcore or Thrash Metal, everything leads to experiencing things, and we have no limits in it with the music and with my voice (laughs) CR: This year the debut of the same name turns 20, do you have plans to celebrate this album live or launch a special edition?
JT: Not really, since we don't have anything planned with this pandemic, and we don't have plans to hold a celebration of the first album, for us we concentrate on doing new things for the fans, if the opportunity is given to make special or bonus editions. tracks like what happened in this last album, something could happen in the future but it is not safe due to the current conditions, and with what we are currently doing it makes people love us (laughs) CR: Many young bands see you as an influence, what do you think of that?
JT: I am honored by the comments that many bands make or when there is an opportunity to have a beer or an autograph. I remember when I was a teenager my first band to listen to was Sepultura, and my influence is Max Cavalera, when I met him I was very fearful to greet him, but in the first seconds you are already in confidence and what you express to him through good music and the inspiration you have made over all those years. I see this as a brotherhood where many bands support each other and that is the good thing that music does: bring people together. CR: Once the pandemic is over, do you have plans to go on a tour in late 2020 or early 2021? Or is the outlook even uncertain to travel?
JT: The truth is that there are no plans because the Covid has paralyzed everything, the only thing we can tell our fans in Europe that we are making the contacts to organize several dates, but we would possibly return to action in October 2021, so we will have forced vacations here (laughs) CR: What message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview? I also want to thank you for the time you have taken to answer our questions on Rock Radio Connection. JT: First of all, I want to thank all the fans who follow us in Latin America, who support us by buying our records and other merchandise, we know from other bands about the beautiful things that speak to the Latin American public, and we want to meet them soon. Hopefully all this Covid pandemic and we will be happy to see each and every one of you to make an extreme party together on and off the stage, thank you again for your support, and thank you Johonny for this pleasant conversation. CR: Julien, thank you for your time. The best for you and your bandmates with this new album! In the same way to our Friends of Season of Mist for making this talk possible with you this day, and we hope to speak again about the future to give continuity to the story of a great band like Benighted!
