Black Omen
Black omen
Darkness Is Its Essence If you are what you like Melodic Black Metal, and especially from countries where I never thought there were such bands, we invite you to meet an interesting proposal that we present in this new interview report on Conexion Rock Radio. We move this time to Turkey, and that is where we speak with Serkan Kaya, Guitarist of the band Black Omen, where we will learn about their history on the local scene in their country, and especially the news they offer us with the relase of his EP Darkness Is My Essence, which will set the basis for what his next album would be in the future. The band is formed in the year 2000 in Istanbul, having as reference in its career 3 recorded productions, being Psytanalysis of 2009 its last long duration. It is currently made up of: Karahan Karaoğlu- Vocals, Serkan Kaya and Baran Akalın- Guitars, Onur Özçelik- Drums, Tolga Uz- Keyboards and Ali Fatih Çimenler- Bass. Below we share this interesting interview: Conexion Rock Radio: Serkan, it's an honor to have you here for our audience and readers in Central and Latin America that wants to know the history and upcoming news that Black Omen have in this year for their fans, welcome! Serkan Kaya: Hi! it’s my pleasure. Thank you and every metalhead in there. CR: Start this special report with the band we want to know if has contemplated in 2019 or 2020 record a new album? What details can you share about it? SK: We’ve just released new EP and promoting it. We have not yet made any decisions about writing new songs or making a new album. Time will show. CR: How was the reception that critics and fans have given to their EP called Darkness Is My Essence, released in March of this year?
SK: EP received quite good comments. We released an EP instead of an album. We wanted to compose limited but special songs. We thought that we should make a few songs that are not repetitive of our past works but will not come out of a certain musical circle. There was no need for filler songs. Besides, we are not a band that is in the music industry and labels/listeners do not expect us to make an album biyearly. Everything depends on us. As we move forward, we become more aware of what we want. This EP has the longest mixing-mastering period among our all products. As far as we remember 11 revisions were performed. We thought over every millisecond, and this result came out. EP includes 3 new songs and rearrangements of our 2 old songs. CR: For the people who know for first time the band, what are the Lyrical themes that speak in your songs?
SK: In our lyrics you can find themes like darkness, loneliness and melancholy, violence, extinction, gothic-fantastic and mythologic stories, love and hate, nature, criticism of humanity and their belief. There is no specific concept but usually we are writing on these topics. In addition, philosophy, psychoanalysis and literature should be mentioned. CR: Let's talk a little about the history of the band. Black Omen was formed in 2000 in Istanbul, after of many shows and recognition in the local scene released in 2003 their self-titled demo, but was until 2005 when recorded When Pure Darkness Covers False World of Light How was the idea in make an interesting band like this why the name? SK: In fact, we were formed in a small city called Eskişehir, in Central Anatolia. We released 1 demo, 3 albums and 1 EP until now. We were looking for a name that wasn't too long, but simple, striking and could reflect our musical style. The negative reflections of the world and our thoughts about future dominated by chaos were effective in choosing the name Black Omen. We also want to say that we like the “Omen” film series. The title of the first album also sums up our musical spirit and style. Maybe it was a little too long. After that, we made word games at 2nd album “Sinphony” and 3rd album “Psytanalysis”… "Sinphony" is a word derived from the combination of “Sin” and “Symphony”. Like sin’s symphony. Similarly, “Psytanalysis” was also derived from the words “Psychoanalysis” and “Satan”. Like the analysis of an evil spirit. Generating such new words is very effective and makes you the only one who has them in the world. So, wherever you write Psytanalysis, you'll find Black Omen's 3rd Album. CR: To your point of view, how you could evaluate the evolution of the band from their first days until today with three albums released many tours and changes in their lineup over the years.
Consider you that has been easy or difficult for Black Omen to obtain international recognition in the local scene in your country? SK: With intense individual effort, desire and devotion, we have carried the band to this day. Since the live recording demo in the early days, we continue with the 3 albums we recorded professionally and the newly released EP. We never expect to be popular. We see the band as an idealistic formation in which we express ourselves. We distributed the demo that we released with our own efforts to people, radio programs, companies and organizers. Following this, we took the stage at various festivals and released 3 albums. We recorded the albums in professional studios and developed in the process of recording and composing. We tried to advance by maintaining a certain quality and always putting it on top. In our 3rd album, we showed an example of this well. In our last EP, the same way… Starting to live in different cities and work conditions have made it quite difficult, but we are still slowly going on here. Keeping the group active is important for us. Of course, it's not easy to make this kind of music here. Since the local scene is already underground, we don't have much problems in the country, but it is not easy to introduce the band in the international arena. There is a need for involvement in the music industry and company policies with plenty of advertising. To start from scratch, financial possibilities are needed. Since it is very difficult to find sponsors for metal bands here, it is necessary to enter the financial burden individually. As a result, I still think we are a local and underground band. However, especially through digital media such as Bandcamp and Spotify, we have created an audience that sees us as a “Cult” abroad. CR: Currently the band is looking for a label that supports you, or do you see that the independent way is the best option for now?
SK: We had released first 2 albums through a label but then it closed. We had negotiations with many labels for our next products, but the conditions they offered were not acceptable for us. So, as you say, the independent way is the best options for now. CR: Black Omen in its history has faced censorship especially in a conservative country like Turkey?
SK: No. Because here we are underground, outside the popular media and the general social circle. There is no TV or radio program that includes any metal band and is widely heard. Here, metal music is a subculture with bands, organizers, audiences and venues-bars. Therefore, the whole country does not even know about our existence. CR: In recent years, has the band participated in being an opening act for international bands or touring other countries? SK: We took stage with Black Metal bands such as Marduk, Rotting Christ, Behemoth etc. in Turkey. Unfortunately, due to unfavorable conditions, we could not take the stage abroad yet. We will be performing in Istanbul next November with Opera IX. CR: What are the next plans that the band will make soon for those who want to be aware of you?
SK: We don't have a clear plan except some local shows right now, but we'll see what time will bring. CR: What message do you want to send to those who read us on this day, and thanks for answering our questions at Conexion Rock Radio. SK: Thank you and everyone who read this interview. This is a proud surprise for us. Happy to be able to touch people's souls out there. CR: Serkan, thanks for the time you have given us, our radio station from now have total support to the band, and we looking forward to talk again in the future We appreciate your support.
