BLACKRAIN

BLACKRAIN
A Band With An Untamed Spirit Speed and Power Metal with a bit of Glam elements is what we have for all of you in this new interview that Conexión Rock Radio presents in its international reports, and the following proposal is a recommendation for those looking for new and interesting things. We present Blackrain from France, a band that has been active on the European music circuit for several years and in 2022 they arrive with their new record production called Untamed, the seventh in their career and which for many is the heaviest work to date, which will seek to exceed the expectations of both fans and critics around the world. On this occasion we spoke with Mathieu "Swan" Molliex, Voice and Guitar of the band, who shares everything related to the production process of the album, the pros and cons they faced during this confinement, the evolution of their sound, and the promising future that they will do together with their bandmates Axel “Max 2” Charpentier- Guitars, Matthieu de la Roche (Henrich)- Bass, and Frank Frusetta on Drums. He knows their history and their plans for the future... and be part of the legions that follow a band with an untamed spirit. Conexión Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Swan, it´s a great honor to have you here and share in this interview with our readers and especially with Blackrain fans around the world the interesting news that the band brings this year, welcome! Swan: Thank you very much Johonny, it's a pleasure for me to talk to you right now and it's the first time we've been interviewed from Honduras, it's exciting! CR: Two and a half years of absence, is what the music industry experienced throughout the world as a result of this pandemic that took us by surprise since 2020, how do you feel about returning to action with concerts and tours there in France?
Swan: The truth feels very good, we took advantage of this time of confinement to be able to make the songs that make up this new album, which will be out in a couple of weeks. The whole writing and songwriting process has been very positive for us, and we've missed playing for people, and we're back on the road in the summer of this year and it was really cool to see the audience enjoying our music, and the band has really enjoyed that moment. I believe that as musicians we have reached a new level in relation to our sound, and we are motivated by that result. CR: Within all the bad that the world has suffered, let's talk now about good things, and precisely Untamed, it is the album number 7 that the band presents in its discography that will be released on November 25 through Steamhammer, the 7th will be a good luck number, and it´s a fact that this new work will be acclaimed by fans and critics alike.
Are you one of those who look for expectations or do you wait for people's reactions with this great album? Swan: We have really put a lot of effort into this recording to make a great album like this. We all hope to exceed expectations, and so far everything has been very positive for us with the reactions of people on social networks and platforms when presenting our singles ahead of the release, and we are 100 percent sure that this is our best album so far due to the fact that it has a heavier sound, and compared to what we have done in the past it all sounds completely different, on Untamed there is diversity in the songs, which people will notice once they hear it. the entire album in physical or digital. I must mention that production has played an important role in all of this by making a denser and more modern sound in our proposal. CR: In this very atypical case, how has the pandemic influenced the writing of the new album?
Did this situation affect you back home or did you wait patiently for the right moment to come back with something new for the fans? Swan: As everyone knows the band is from France, but 7 years ago I moved to Sweden, so I wasn't in my country when the pandemic happened, and I was a considerable distance from one point to another. Being in Sweden, the restrictions were lowered to the point that I was able to go for a walk, enjoy time in a bar or restaurant and return to my work as normal, that did not affect my routine. In France the situation was more complicated by the strict measures that were taken there, everyone was locked up in their homes and no one could go out for fear of getting sick or dying. It was very difficult times that people and my bandmates suffered during all this time, but within all the bad we took advantage of it in a positive way to write new ideas because we were not in a hurry to deliver something to the label. From this point of view, the band went through a process where there was no pressure or stress, we had the advantage of doing everything in the most correct way possible to have a quality recording and wait for the right moment and conditions to prepare this new album. release to the people. In the end everything was positive for the band and for the label. CR: We know Hannes Braun from Kissin Dynamite was the producer.
What impressions does the band have of the work that Hannes did for the new album? Swan: We are in awe of everything he has done in the studio to shape this album as far as production is concerned. We have been friends with Hannes for many years, but we had no idea that he actually worked with music of this type, if I had known this I would have asked him to produce our previous works, but that's life. Now with Untamed and thanks to his work the band reached another level, and seeing this good result we hope to have his experience again for other albums in the future. CR: Let me tell you that the production is one of the strengths of the album, and here we find great moments like Untamed, Summer Jesus, Kiss The Sky, Demon, Blade Of Love, Shut Down to mention a few examples. What stories does the band offer with Untamed? Swan: We've never done any kind of concept album before and there's no kind of concept behind it either. Until now, we've always been working the same way, which means we just write songs and try to pick the best ones and then we put it all together so that you can expose the story behind each song, it's just that the Lyrics are always about personal experiences, as well as what is happening in our lives, that's all, it's very simple. CR: Twenty-one years into your career, it's a long journey for you and your bandmates, resulting in many world tours and great albums that are now classics, as well as your foray into the TV show France Got Talent .
How does it feel to witness good and bad moments in Blackrain's history? Swan: We have lived through many things, and we had difficult moments in all these years, appearing in a TV program benefited us in terms of promotion and we were able to reach more people and be more known back then, it was a good experience to participate in France Got Talent about 5 or 6 times with a target audience of 6 million people watching each program, and we were managed by people who had too much power to correctly guide our career, and we regret not being able to make the changes as they should be in those days, and perhaps because of that, Black Rain does not have a greater international recognition, and fighting for more than 20 years makes our time go by very quickly, and it is not easy as an artist to play a genre that is currently not popular in some countries, and people prefer a more aggressive approach. Despite everything we are still here, playing for the people, having fun, doing good shows and also having a record label that has believed in the band. Now with Untamed almost ready to hit the streets, we hope to be able to promote internationally, as well as at this moment that we are talking from one end of the planet to the other, playing outside of Europe are our ambitions for the future, and we will see what happens later. CR: Speaking of all this Swan, this album will be the reason for them to go out to other countries and have experience with other audiences, we want to know if the band has had the opportunity to play in renowned festivals in Europe such as Hellfest, Download? or Wacken? Swan: Yeah we've played big venues and we've been opening shows for big bands. We have been lucky to be at great festivals like Hellfest and Download, I agree with what you said before, we have a feeling that this album will open other doors especially for the songs and the production. The only thing pending for us is to play in Wacken, with the twist that this album has, it will reach a lot more people and we are sure that we will go further with this new work and we hope for the best once it´s released to the world. CR: For those who know the band for the first time, let's talk a little about its origins, did you play in other projects before or did this all start from scratch?
Swan: It's all been a very particular point in Black Rain's history. Max and I started the band when we were both very young, and at the end of high school we decided to start playing covers, especially Metallica with Kill Em'All which we consider a cult album. With the passage of time we decided to shape several songs of what would later be the first compositions like Black Rain, all that was not planned and happened naturally, with non-innocent lyrics, that is how this project was born that to this day Today it continues in force thanks to our friendship, and a sample of this are the records we have made, everything is a clear sign that everything is fine. CR: This is the second album with Steamhammer, how do you feel about the support that the label has given the band over the years, especially when you debuted with Dying Breed in 2019? Something very curious in the band that in their discography they changed labels with each album they released, but here there are two in a single round, it is a good sign that the band is stable at that point. Swan: As you say, it's the first time we've released two back-to-back albums on the same record label, and that's a remarkably important point for us, it's a good sign and we're happy with their staff, we have a good working relationship and we had contact when we played Hellfest years ago, they have helped us in many things, and people think that a record label will give you everything and that is something that has changed over the years. They support us by giving us a space from their store, and we have benefited a lot from their work network, in the same way they are in charge of launching the album, giving the proper promotion and organizing enough interviews to be able to obtain a greater reach to the public, here are the things are the same just on a different scale. As part of the band I consider that belonging to a label like this is an important commitment, and we hope to continue working with them for future projects. CR: People consider that this current lineup is the perfect one for the band, despite the fact that in their history they have only had drummer changes, what do you think of this kind of comments? Swan: It's been many years since Max and I started the band, we had a little time to find the right people in the Black Rain lineup, I'll tell you Heinrich the bass player has been with us from the beginning when we released our first demo in 2003, and Frank who is our drummer and has been playing with us for 12 years. There has been good chemistry between everyone, and things have been very easy ever since then. CR: Seeing the great demand for post-pandemic concerts and tours, have you thought about recording a live album for the next few years, taking advantage of the moment you have with Untamed?
Swan: That's an interesting question, for now I don't have anything in mind to make a live album, the truth is that to record an album like that it might be a good idea, but it involves the moment the band lives to make. that project and the production, that would depend if it is really worth it or ends up being a disappointment. I have several albums of bands that have recorded concerts in my collections and they may be very risky projects. On the other hand, if I could make a video at a concert or have them take pictures, then we could say it's us in our natural state, that's another story, and I think that something could work there for later. It's always a matter of having the right people at the right time so that all of this can be planned in advance and everything turns out great in the end. I believe that the idea you have given me can be useful later, and I would take your opinion into account, Johonny. CR: Once the album is released, what's next for Black Rain? Do you tour or more promotion for the album? Swan: For now we will focus as much as possible with the new album in terms of promotion, and of course play in as many places as possible, we are discussing for 2023 to be able to organize a schedule of concerts to be able to play in many countries different, that for us is our first priority. Obviously we are writing new music that we will be shaping later for a new album, for us that is our constant source to stay active while doing concerts, we are also planning the recording of a new video clip, that goes for next year as well, and we must make a lot of presence on social networks, we are talking about several projects that we are looking to finish soon, and for now prior to the release of the album we are working to do more interviews, so we will be very busy in these coming weeks and it will be very productivity for us. CR: What message do you want to send at the end of this interview to the people who have enjoyed this reading, and thank you for the time you have given us on this day for Conexión Rock Radio, we hope to have a new conversation about the story that Black Rain does great music now with Untamed which is ready to take the world
Swan: First of all thanks to you Johonny for your interest in getting closer to us, it is a great support that journalists from all over the world give us now with a new album in our hands, and it has been an honor to talk with someone from Honduras, As I said at the beginning, it is my first interview for someone from a country like yours, I thank the people who have supported us during all these years, and those who are curious to know us, I invite you to check out our material for yourselves and of what we have prepared soon, we have four singles that are from the new album that comes out on November 25, and please, give this material a listen, you might like it, and we are hoping to tour several Latin American countries , and our proposal is beginning to be heard in various parts of the world. So we hope to see you out there on the road. Special thanks to Björn von Oettingen of the Steamhammer Press and Promotion Team for his help in making this interview possible, and to Swan for the time he gave at home.
