Originalmente, llamábamos a nuestra banda "Calico".

Currently the line-up is conformed by Flavio Pompeo- Bass, Yves Locher- Drums, Nico Wiget- Guitars, Lukas Mischler- Violin, and Philipp Wyssen- Vocals. We invite you to enjoy this conversation with your Captain, and learn about the details that the band offers with their first album, the concept behind it, and the plans that these intrepid Pirates have in a great challenge that they will not give up. once they go into battle ... Or die trying to win at the end of the day and celebrate with a party like rock rules! Conexion Rock Radio: Philipp, greetings from Honduras, Central America, I send my best wishes to you and your bandmates with this emergency there in home, and it's an honor in talk in this report and share with our audience in Latin America and other continents the history and upcoming news that Calarook have for their fans in 2020, welcome! Philipp Wyssen: Ahoy, Johonny! Hope you are doing well. I am honored that you contacted me for this interviews. CR: Start my report with you in knowing what are the expectations that the band have with their record debut called Surrender Or Die, which was officially released on September 11.
How do you feel as a band taking this first step in your history? PW: It is very awesome and exciting. We worked on this album for more than one year. Now that the result is finally here, we are very proud of it. Since we are a small and unknown band, our goal and expectation is to expand our fan base more international and present our music to as much people as possible who might like it. CR: For many it will be an interesting proposal that many in other continents will know, especially with their EP Calico, released in 2017. What impressions have you had with the first two videos: Surrender Or Die and Invisible Pineapples? PW: Many fans we had from the beginning were waiting since 2017 for a full album. And finally we are able to answer their requests. The shoot of Invisible Pineapples was a long day. It was the first time we made a real music video. But it also was a very interesting and funny day. Surrender Or Die has been shot during the recording in the studio. This video is no show, it just shows some impressions from our time in the studio. The responses to both videos were mainly positive so far. So I think we did a lot of things right. CR: What experiences left the band in working in the studio?
The album was self-produced, or had an external producer for make possible this Project? PW: This was our first real studio experience so far. Every one of us learned a lot in this time. We improved our techniques and skills a lot. The recording excuses no faults. And Rafael Salzmann ensured to give our best. If we thought the take was already good enough, he pushed us to make it even better. The whole album, videos and everything else is completely self-financed and produced. Therefore at the moment, the band is just a very expensive hobby for us. We all have day jobs. CR: For those who know your music for the first time, we would like to know about the concept behind this debut album, there are stories around the tracks or is a conceptual work?
PW: To be honest, there is no real concept (haha). Except of the theme. All songs are about pirates or pirate related topics like alcohol. Most of the songs are standing for themselves. Some of them tell a story, some are just fun. In the beginning of the band we started to write songs. When the plan for the album started we had to discuss which songs we want to record. Someone said: “All”. And we thought: “Yeah! Why not”. And here we are now. CR: Let's talk about the origins of Calarook, how did you meet to join forces and form an interesting band like that, and why the name? CR: Nico had the plan to start a Pirate Metal band for a few years. He then searched for other musicians. Yves’ old band (Confector) just quit. So he searched for a new project. Therefore, he teamed up with Nico in 2014. From the beginning, the plan was to have a real violin. So they found Janine, which has been replaced by Lukas in 2017. I joined the band in 2015 and tried to make progress in singing, since this is my first band. Fabian joined the band in 2016 and had to quit in 2019 for health reasons. Now Flavio is on the bass. Our first show we had at the birthday party of a friend in 2016. There the quest really began. Originally, we called our band “Calico”. That was the nick name of the pirate captain Jack Rackham. But because it was nearly impossible to find us when you searched for this name, we decided to rename us. It was not that easy to find a name. Therefore, we just invented a word: “Calarook”. It is a bit similar to the old name and this way we will be the first hit on the search engines. And on this point of the band history, it was not a big deal to change the name.
CR: There are two very interesting elements: The sound of Folk Metal and the pirate theme, what are the influences of the band and what inspired you to talk about pirates, treasures, travel, women and rum?
PW: It’s hard to say what influences we have. Every one of us listens to different kinds of metal sub genres and related genres. Therefore we have a lot of influences. Of course we also get some inspirations of the already established pirate metal bands. But our goal is to make something different. As said before, Nico wanted to make a pirate metal band. And everyone who joined the band liked the idea. Pirates were people who lived the way they wanted. They had no interest to obey to a king thousands of miles away and pay taxes for him. And they loved rum. So even more in common. CR: We want to know if the lineup is currently the same or are there changes in Calarook for this debut? PW: Lukas told us half a year ago that he wants to quit because of his studies and his daytime job. Therefore we are searching for someone new for the violin at the moment. But we already have a candidate which could be a worthy replace for him. And maybe there will even be an additional band member in the future. CR: What impressions do you have from the people when listen to your music in their live shows?
PW: Many people are making a party like there is no tomorrow. Even at the first show. They knew that we are making pirate metal, but did not expect this kind of music. Pirate metal just defines the theme of sound, but not what kind of metal you are playing. Luckily, most of the people liked what we are playing and got into it after a few songs. So almost every concert was a feast for us. CR: Being a band from Switzerland, has it been easy or difficult to gain recognition on the local and international scene? PW: In Switzerland it is quite hard. There are a lot of small metal bands who try to find their place in the scene. Therefore, we have an overload of metal concerts here and the distances are small between the towns. You have to deliver something special and unique to reach the people. On an international level it is even harder. Especially when you are a pirate metal band from a country with no access to the ocean. But since we live the spirit of them, I think we are accurate enough. CR: Currently the band is looking for a label for support you, or are you looking independently for a better option? PW: At the moment we are not active searching for a label. But of course, we are always open for requests. We want to see how good our debut album works and then decide what our next moves will be. CR: With this worldwide emergency caused by COVID-19, many concerts and festivals were canceled, as well as release delays.
Being you part of the band, are you aware that this emergency may affect you economically in make concerts, self-promotion and with a possible drop in sales? PW: Luckily, we were in the preparation for our release. We only had one show cancellation. But it is very difficult to plan shows at the moment. We don’t know if the measures will get stricter in the coming months or not. Since we are not financially dependent on the band so far, we can manage this situation quite good. Also the album release is not harmed that much because of this. We have a lot of online orders from all around the world. Maybe we would have sold more with some live shows. But who knows. CR: Are you currently doing any online activity with fans? PW: We are active on social media and deliver the fans a lot of content. We also evaluated the possibility of a streaming concert. But our technical equipment and the internet connection was not good enough to ensure a good performance. A third music video is also planned to be released soon. CR: Do you have any special projects for their discography in the future? Live tracks like example? PW: Since this is our debut album, we have to see how the reactions are. I assume the next step would be a second album before thinking about a live album or something else. CR: Once the emergency is over, do you have plans to tour by the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021? Or even the panorama is uncertain to travel?
PW: We have two small tours abroad planned for 2021. At the moment it’s very difficult to say, if we can do them or not. But we are all optimists who better give it a try than just let fall the opportunity. CR: What message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview? I also want to thank you for the time you have taken to answer our questions in this special report for Conexión Rock Radio PW: First of all: Stay healthy and safe in these uncertain times. Don’t let you bring down by this virus and try to enjoy life anyways. And of course: Stay pirate! CR: Philipp, thanks for your time! The best luck for your bandmates with this debut album In same way to Markus Eck for make possible this talk with you, and we looking forward in talk again the future and give continuity to the history of Calarook! Have you a perfect day there in home! PW: Thank you too. It was a great chat. And yes also to Markus Eck. He is doing a great job. Hope to talk to you again in the future. Have a great day too. Cheers! Special thanks to Markus Eck at Metalmessage PR for his help in conducting this interview and Philipp Wyssen for the time allotted on this report.
