CANNIBAL CORPSE
¿Sabes a qué me refiero?

CANNIBAL CORPSE
Violence Beyond The Limit One of the most important names in Death Metal throughout the world appears in our international interviews on Conexion Rock Radio, and for the followers of this band we bring you important news in 2021 that the world continues to be convulsed by the Covid 19 Pandemic, But that struggles to survive and stay on his feet, thus fighting against an invisible enemy. We talk on this occasion to the United States with our special guest: Alex Webster, eternal Bassist and one of the founders of the band Cannibal Corpse, who this year will release their new record production called Violence Unimagined, which will see the light on April 16 via Metal Blade Records, where the expectations for his fans around the world will be met once they enjoy from start to finish this work that will be consecrated as a classic within the genre. Likewise, it represents a new page in its history with the incorporation into its ranks of Guitarist Erik Rutan, well known for working with titans such as Morbid Angel, Ripping Corpse, and who currently holds the reins of his band Hate Eternal, replacing the position left by the charismatic Pat O'Brien, and complemented by Paul Mazurkiewicz- Drums, Rob Barrett- Guitars, and George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher- Vocals. In this report you will know everything related to Rutan's entry into the band, the concept that Cannibal presents in this new work, his thinking about how the pandemic has affected them, the plans they have in the future to revisit two classic albums, and how a band invites us to be a witness and part of a Violence Beyond the Limit. Conexión Rock Radio: Alex, good afternoon at home!
Johonny González from Conexion Rock Radio greets you from Honduras, Central America, and it is an honor to make this special report for our readers in Latin America and the rest of the world and talk about the next news that a great band like Cannibal Corpse has for their fans in this year, welcome! Alex Webster: Thank you for your interest, it´s a joy to chat with someone from your region! CR: How has this situation been for the band that has affected them as artists back home? No tours, no live shows other than dealing with lockdown all these months AW: Yes, you know that the whole pandemic thing has been a challenge for us and for all the bands. As artists we make a living touring for, and this emergency has literally put a stop to everything, but the important thing for now is that we are safe and secure. Releasing this album represents a challenge for us, you know that everyone is thinking about new things like doing live broadcasts and things like that, so maybe later we can do a live broadcast seeing that we can't tour, but you know everyone we are learning to adapt, and it is obvious that it is important that safety comes first. We will just adjust and figure things out for ourselves with the recording, and we feel that with this new material we overcome several obstacles. CR: Let's put the bad things aside and talk about the release of your new album, the number 15 of your discography called Violence Unimagined, which will be released on April 16 via Metal Blade Records.
How do you feel about releasing a new album in these strange circumstances, and your expectations on this new page in the band's history? AW: Oh you know it's something, it's like a new chapter for the band with the addition of Erik Rutan and all I want to say, it's the first time we've had a lineup change since 2005 so it's a long time We have been playing with the same group of people so to have a change is like a new chapter and we are really excited that Eric brings so much energy to the band and Rob Barrett are making a great team together on guitars, you know They work very well together so I'm excited for the future, you know, we're very happy with how Violence Unimagined turned out and everything indicates that over the years, a lot of good things await us with this lineup, we look forward to a long future with Eric now in the band. CR: As you mentioned before, there are changes in the band's line-up, Erik Rutan from the band Hate Eternal is the new guitarist who replaces Pat O'Brien, and has worked as a producer on their previous albums.
How do you guys feel about having Erik playing in the band now? Everyone thinks Erik is like some kind of secret weapon that will offer a new level in Cannibal Corpse's music. AW: That's right, Erik is a very energetic person and he works so hard, for example if you look at all the work he does with his band Hate Eternal he is the guitarist, he writes a lot of the songs and the lyrics and of course he is also the singer and he is the producer. When they're on tour, he sometimes plays the role of tour bus driver (laughs) and that's his environment, jobs that he thinks work perfectly, so to bring that kind of hard-working energy to our band, I mean, I feel like Cannibal Corpse is a constant working band, but having someone like him join us brings that creative energy, and it really is someone who is really positive and hardworking that that kind of thing in our environment and the people that surrounds us, and as I mentioned earlier I think we are going to have a great bright future with Eric in the band because he knows that adds a lot, but I can't help but think of a guitarist who has better credentials to be in a Death Metal band, names like Ripping Corpse, Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal have put him as a reference to be a producer with killer bands of Death, Thrash, and Hardcore so he has a lot of experience that brings a lot to those bands. CR: Everyone considers Violence to be one of the most acclaimed releases of this year, by the way, another great cover made from the twisted imagination of Vince Locke.
We want to know what is the concept behind this new album. Cannibal Corpse tell us about the uncontrolled violence caused by this pandemic? AW: The cover itself was based on the album title: Violence Unimagined. This work is a joint effort that Drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz and Vince do in common when the band enters the studio when we prepare a new album. Paul sent him the list of songs, and when the idea for the album name came up he said: this album will be called Violence Unimagined, make several ideas and we will see which one we like. So Vince started working on the ideas and cover sketches for the new album, and in the end one of his illustrations ended up being the album cover, and I think that idea would result in a really brutal cover. Vince's imagination really creates most of the ideas, sometimes we give him an idea that he works with that, but most of the time we let him make his own, and this is one of my favorite album covers that has made for us and I think it's really brutal and of course he made alternate artwork for an album cover in places where it can be censored at release time. The album name is Paul's idea, this is our 15th work so that's a lot of albums so if we've had 14 albums and now we're saying this is number 15, we have some violence that is unimaginable, maybe it will make our fans curious what could come next, so with a new work about to be released they will have a chance to appreciate what we have in hands. CR: Many Death and Black bands from all over the world see CC, and above all you are influenced by your playing and headbanging.
What is your point of view of this generational change where many bands mention you? AW: I'm honored to be brought up those compliments, because I know how I feel about bands that inspired me, you know, bands like Slayer and of course Metallica, Iron Maiden, bands that I listened to a long time ago and I'm still listening to those bands. So, if someone feels for us what I feel for my favorite bands, like Morbid Angel, and how people feel that way about us, it's an honor and we are glad to know that we are probably part of the development of this type of band. music. We are not the beginning, we are not the end, but hopefully we are a good strong part of the development of Death Metal. CR: Years ago you were invited to participate in the album El Llamado De La Hembra by the Mexican band Transmetal, in the same way George participated in México Bárbaro.
What impressions did you have on meeting and participating as guests of the Partida Brothers at that time? AW: It was really cool, and I am honored that George and me were invited to participate. When we were living in Tampa, although I currently live in Akron (New York), which is quite a long way from there, we were recording in Morrisound and working with Scott Burns as a producer. Transmetal was there with him recording his album, and we were listening to everything together, and Scott asked us if we were interested in doing some guest appearances, so we told him no problem. For my part, I contributed my bass lines for the track Killers, which was a cover and George would do his thing with México Bárbaro and Ceveline in the backing vocals. All of that was in the mid 90's and the guys from Transmetal are really great, it was an honor to participate with them on that occasion, and we remember them fondly. CR: You have forged your legend over the years through albums that are classics, songs and covers that have been subject to censorship in various countries, I want to ask you Alex if there is any formula or any factor for the band to be considered as the most commercially successful on the scene worldwide?
Producer? Musicians? Carrier? Or is there a mix of everything to make this interesting? AW: I think the key to our success is probably a combination of things and trying to be consistent, you know what I mean, like when we made the band, we wanted the band to be a Death Metal oriented band, and that's what we've been on all 15 albums, you know what I mean, like consistency and it's been there in all areas, we use the same artist for everything you know, like for all the covers of our work, so it has that consistency like Iron Maiden in the same logo in the same artist for many of their arts, the same for us, you know we have our own work team, it is very similar to be consistent and project what we want. So there is that part and then of course we always sing about horror songs and then music, even though for us in our mind we wanted to do some different kind of music, we wouldn't do it in Cannibal Corpse we would do it in a side project. It's just Death Metal, you know, that's something, I think that kind of consistency is the reason why fans appreciate our work in our style and faithful with their own identity. CR: Speaking of consistency over time, you've been working with Metal Blade Records your whole life.
What is the feeling of the band in being part of one of the labels that is iconic in rock and metal culture around the world, and at the same time the cradle of many legendary bands and in which Cannibal is part of that history . AW: That's right. We love working with Metal Blade, obviously talking about Brian Slagel the founder and the people who work there are professionals and they have a formula for success with the catalog they work with. It's a great label and we're proud to be a part of it, and we've never seriously considered leaving it, we have such a great relationship with them, and Metal Blade is the perfect label for our band, so we'll be with Metal Blade for life, and we are quite happy about that. CR: One of the classic albums of the band such as Butchered at Birth in 2021 celebrates its thirty anniversary, do you have plans to celebrate this album live later if the pandemic allows it?
AW: You know, some other interviewers have asked me about this and right now we don't have any plans. Unfortunately, we'll wait for early 2022, maybe we can start touring again, and we don't know when is the time when we can add a couple of additional songs to the setlist. I really don't think we play the whole album. You know what I mean? Like some bands that by trend or tradition will play the entire album to celebrate an anniversary in concert. From my point of view I don't think we will do that with Butchered, but there is the open possibility of celebrating VILE's 25th anniversary, which was the first album with George on vocals.
We must also consider that there are 4 of the 5 original members of that album, and then if we can do something special for the occasion. If everything goes as we wish in 2022 we would have a celebration revisiting songs by Butchered and Vile, so the anniversaries of both works would be covered in addition to the new material. But for now we have to wait for world conditions to improve. CR: Once everything improves with this emergency Alex, do you have plans to tour in Europe, the United States or Latin America in the next few months or in 2021, or for now everything is uncertain for you in terms of tours?
AW: Seeing as this all the best is to prepare a tour schedule for 2022 to support the release of the new album. We will definitely not play any live shows in 2021, and possibly do a live broadcast in October or November. But at the moment we don't have any plans and we will be working on promoting Violence to keep us busy, we are not the type of band that wants to sit around and wait for things to happen. So if the situation doesn't work out or it gets worse we will work on new songs CR: Alex, what message do you want to send to all the people who read us in this special interview? And thank you for the opportunity you gave us to talk with you on this day
AW: I just want to thank you very much for the interview Johonny, first of all, we all appreciate it very much and I also want to thank our fans, I hope everyone is well and we hope to see you all as soon as we can… better late than never. CR: Alex, thanks for your time. Best of luck to you and your bandmates with this new album! In the same way to our friends at Metal Blade for making this talk possible with you and we hope to talk with you again in the future. Have a perfect day at home! AW: Thank you very much Johonny, I really appreciate it and like I said, we hope to see you all on some tour sooner or later. A hug to everyone and take care of yourselves at home! Special thanks to Kathleen Roe and Sarah Lutz at Looters / Metal Blade for their invaluable help in making this interview possible, and to Alex Webster for the time allowed in the completion of this report.
