Cattle Decapitation

Cattle Decapitation
The Great Dying Exposed In An Atlas For those who are lovers of the extreme genre we bring to you this interesting interview with a band that has gained respect and notoriety throughout the world over the years, and that in this 2019 they return to the top with their new record production that is Outlines as one of the best in his growing career. We refer this time to Cattle Decapitation, and they return with all the brutality with their new deliver called Death Atlas, which will be released at the end of November via Metal Blade Records. We talked with his Vocalist Travis Ryan for know about the expectations they have with this new album that he considers to be the best of his career, and that marks the debut of Olivier Pinard in the Bass, and Belisario Dimuzio in the Guitars. In this interesting conversation, we will share general details among them of the production process, of the conceptual framework, evolution and plans that the band has for a world tour in several continents where we will all witness the Great Dying Exposed In An Atlas. Below we offer you our interview Conexion Rock Radio: Travis, greetings from Honduras, Central America It´s an honor in talk with you for our audience in Latin America that wants to know about the next news that Cattle Decapitation has for its fans this year, welcome! Travis Ryan: Greetings to all, it will be a pleasure to talk with you this day! CR: Start my report on congratulating the band for their new album that will be released at the end of November and is called Death Atlas, via Metal Blade Records.
What expectations does the band have in this new episode in their interesting career? Everything indicates that we have one of the most anticipated albums of the year! TR: Well, I can say with 100% sincerity and confidence that it’s definitely our most refined record yet. The entire record has a great flow and is by far our most “put together” or “realized” album so far in our career. From the beginning to the end, we take you on an emotional rollercoaster filled with intense peaks and very depressing valleys. That’s personally my favorite kind of stuff. It’s just a very emotionally driven record whether its sadness or anger or despair or just destructive. It’s all here. CR: If The Anthropocene Extinction was a work highly acclaimed by critics and fans, with this new album the band has been overcome in many aspects especially with the production.
How do you fell in working in the studio with Dave Otero? TR: He’s kinda become the 6th member of the band at this point. We love to work with him, as he’s awesome to track with. Sure, he nails mixes insanely but my favorite part about him truly is while tracking. That’s also the areas where we butt heads the most but he’s still great to work with. Is it easy? Not necessarily, but you don’t want to be resting in the studio. It has to be challenging. He does that. CR: Currently the band has changes in their lineup: Olivier Pinard- Bass, and Belisario Dimuzio- Guitars. How do you feel about having Oliver and Belisario in the band now? TR: Fucking great man, this is just a really great lineup we have. Bel is well-versed in us both musically and personally by now and Oli has just been a guy we’ve really wanted to work with for years now. Easy going but on top of his shit. No drama, no attitude, he’s here for us and not just himself. It´s fucking awesome. CR: In your own words as you can define Death Atlas, many expect tracks that talk about the rights of animals as in their previous works, by the way impressive work of Wes Benscoter on the cover.
It´s conceptual or will we have new stories around the tracks? TR: All of our albums have had rather “loose” concepts. Whereas artists like King Diamond make an album that tells a story, ours don’t do that. We deal with images and notions, not so much anything too directly and the songs aren’t arranged to tell a story. CR: What reactions has the band had with the release of the first two singles: One Day Closer to the End of the World and especially Bring Back the Plague, has caught our attention that the lyrics are a clear reference to the Yersinia Pestis bacteria that caused the black plague and the powerful vocal range that you drive on this track (literally with the jaw on the ground!) that you can tell us about it. TR: It’s been really great so far and I’m happy people like it at all… but they truly have seen NOTHING yet! We never release the “best” songs first, we don’t believe in trying to attract people to a new record by giving the best songs first. Instead, we release songs that have elements that give a decent representation of what you might find on the album. The first song and last song… nobody has heard yet and those are two of the greatest songs on the album. The song “Time’s Cruel Curtain” has only been played live so far, not released. That’s one of my favorite tracks on it. So, there’s so much more for everyone in store! CR: This is the band's seventh album with Metal Blade, how do you feel in being part of a great label like this?
TR: Well, its obviously been a dream come true considering this is what I decided I wanted to do as a kid and part of what led me to that was Metal Blade releases. I remember first being approached by a guy that is now one of my best friends who worked at the label at the time and I just laughed at him cuz I didn’t see a label like that being interested in us. But he made it happen and while there’s been a few bumps in the road here and there, we’ve managed to come out on top with an excellent relationship that I’m very proud of. They’ve stepped up to the plate big time on this record and the past couple releases and that’s awesome as it really only helps us keep going stronger. CR: Curiously, in the discography of the band you don´t have a live album, do you consider that with the success that Atlas already has, consider recording a CD or DVD live? TR: Honestly, we’ve always been asked for one but… well, I just don’t see the point in them really. DVDs don’t even sell anymore and there’s also something that I know about this part of the industry that I don’t want to really give away, but it’s something that is a deal-breaker for me personally. But it’s something that’s done on 95% of every live album you’ve ever heard and I just don’t want to do that but it’s something that needs to be done in order to have a truly great live recording. CR: Homovore will turn 20 in 2020, are you of the opinion that the anniversary of this album should be celebrated or do you prefer to deliver the new material to fans on a tour?
TR: Personally, I don’t really. I released a limited edition tin CD for it years back for the 15th anniversary. I think Human Jerky would be better to do that with, Homovore has some problems with it in my opinion. Some really GLARING problems that are obvious if you listen to it. To me, anyways. That’s the past and we haven’t been that band for much longer than we were that band. CR: Many young bands of Death and Grindcore look in Cattle an influence for their contribution over the years, what comments do you have about it?
TR: Well, it’s cool and all but I personally don’t see it in any bands. I see and hear vocalists that are using my style that I’ve done for about 2 decades now (mainly the tongue-y high vocals) but musically, I don’t hear too many bands doing what we’re doing I guess. Nearly every single death core band we’ve ever met has told us we were an influence to them and so I just don’t get it. I mean, I don’t hear us in their stuff at all. I see them ripping each other off, not us, haha! So… I never really understood what that was about. But hey, it’s an honor and I’m glad people take something away from it even if it doesn’t reflect in their own material. CR: What would be the advice for bands in Central America on your part of how to work a band where there is no music industry? TR: Just do your thing. Do what you want. It fucking worked for us. There’s some cool fests around that like to bring obscure bands from all over the world so try to get in good with them. Curby from Obscene Extreme is a prime example. He invests his time and money to bring grind from all reaches of planet earth and I think that’s amazing. It’s what makes his fest so special. CR: Once with the album in the streets and tour to announce we will have the opportunity to see you on a tour of Central America?
TR: I really hope so man. Would like to see our friends from Corpse Garden (Costa Rica) again. Finding a solid promoter has been our only issue. There’s been countless opportunities that never happened because of flaky promoters. I even have a fucking Central/South American tour poster already ready to go that was going to be used for a tour that got cancelled! We’re ready!!! CR: What message do you want to send to those who have read this interview, and thank you for the time you have given us for Conexion Rock Radio. TR: Hang in there. Life is brutal and this is a brutal ass planet. Hang in there and be kind to each other. CR: Travis, thank you very much for the interview, likewise to Metal Blade Records for making this conversation with you possible, the best for you and your band mates with Death Atlas and we hope to talk again in the future! TR: Thank you and hope to see you soon! Special thanks to Sarah Lutz of the Metal Blade Press and Promotion Team for their help in this special interview, Travis Ryan for her time granted.
