CATTLE DECAPITATION

CATTLE DECAPITATION
A New Body… In A Consummated World Conexión Rock Radio begins May with an interesting band that in recent years has established itself as one of the strongest exponents of Progressive Death Metal and Grindcore, and now in 2023 they return through the front door with another brutal work that consecrates them again in his story. We are referring to the band Cattle Decapitation, and we are talking on this occasion with their guitarist Josh Elmore who shares details of his new record production called TERRASITE, which will be released on May 12, 2023 through Metal Blade Records, and which For many, this new work will mark the continuation of his glorious Death Atlas of 2019, but due to circumstances of the pandemic, it has not been given the opportunity to be presented live and had a strong reception worldwide. In addition, we talk about the production experience with producer Dave Otero, the concept behind Terrasite, how the band has faced the pandemic with Death Atlas, and the immediate plans they have with this new work under their belt. Cattle Decapitation's current lineup, in addition to Elmore on guitars, is complemented by Travis Ryan- Vocals, David McGraw- Drums, Olivier Pinard- Bass, and Belisario Dimuzio- Guitars. Make yourself comfortable, get out your snacks and drinks, prepare a playlist of this band, and enjoy a pleasant reading where the band will take us through a post-apocalyptic world where humanity will be reborn in a new body... in a consummated world. Conexión Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Josh, thanks for accepting our invitation to do this interview and share with Cattle Decapitation fans the important news the band has this year, an honor to talk with you today!
Josh Elmore: Hi Johonny, thanks to you for your interest, and here ready for a nice chat with you about what we have with Cattle fans around the world with what we're have in hands. CR: The pandemic is gone and the tours, festivals, and concerts have returned to normal. How do you feel about playing again for the fans after several years of absence?
JE: For everyone in general it's a relief, and I'm glad to see that things are finally getting back to normal, and seeing that the doors have been opening for us, we have taken advantage of doing several club tours, filling everything up and those shows were great. . Although I must confess to you that when the alerts were lowered all over the world and the restrictions were lifted, even the advances in terms of logistics to organize tours and trips have been slow. It has been a 100% recovery. For now we are focusing on everything related to the next tours that we will do on the road that we would properly call a post-pandemic tour, we had things pending a long time ago but due to the situation that the world experienced some time ago it was impossible, now we consider that it is the moment just to be able to make up for those delays, we fear a lot of things ready, in addition to the new album we hope to be able to be part of several festivals at the end of spring, with some luck we can recover that lost ground and reach as many people as possible. CR: The important thing now is that they can meet the fans again on the tours that you will announce soon. But let's talk about Terrasite, this is the tenth album in the band's history, and it will be released on May 12 via Metal Blade Records, by the way, congratulations, everything indicates that fans and critics will acclaim this new work that you guys have made.
What impressions do you have of the people with the first singles that the band has released in the last few weeks? JE: We decided to release our first single weeks ago We Eat Our Young, many might consider that it was a strange choice to select this song, for us we consider it a good option to start presenting this new material, many think that this single makes them remember the sound of the first days of the band maintaining a modern aspect but keeping the essence of the band in its sound as far as extreme music is concerned. The label has advised us to release two more singles due to the fact that people are more focused on consuming singles than buying an album, so we'll wait once the album is released and see what our next move will be and possibly over the course of the year. year we will offer more singles to people. We had to seriously think about the choice of the first song, and everyone by majority decided for We Eat Our Young, could it be representative in the setlist for these next tours? I can say that yes, some may like it and others may not, it's part of knowing people's tastes and especially when you listen to Travis's voice and they always say that that leprechaun voice is very brutal within the sound of the band, the reactions have been many and we consider that as approval.
The next single is Scourge of the Offspring, within a few hours it also had good reviews and comments. Seeing the enthusiasm of the people towards the song, we think that we have presented two different extremes within Cattle's music, and they are perfect examples that many think that the album will present variations and not be linear as they thought, ours was a commitment that we shaped it in the recording studio, they are songs that inspire people and that generate interest in what we are composing. For that reason we are thinking of releasing a third single, possibly days before the release of the album, for the video we will look for a different way of presenting the song and we believe that people will like it once we reveal which song we are going to present there, they have told us Asked about surprises or what things the new album will bring, we only tell them that when they have it in their hands they will know those details. So far with all the elements that we have incorporated for Terrasite I can honestly say that we have reached a strong creative point in our career. CR: Again Dave Otero is in charge of the production, and he has worked with the band since 2012's Monolith of Inhumanity, in the same way with Wesley Benscoter for the cover.
Were there any more ideas to improve the sound of this new album? What impressions do you have of Dave and Wesley's work for Terrasite? JE: With Dave we have always had an excellent work chemistry, and I think that he has contributed ideas without disrespecting the criteria of the rest of the group. He has been very serious about revising the entire catalog that we have done over the years to be able to incorporate good things, but we have also decided to try a new direction, and that has been noticeable in the changes we have made in the studio. , we have felt that there have been many variations, which for us is a positive and strong point at the same time. All this has been a way of assimilating the new material and seeing the differences that have been made in relation to our previous works, we see that now what has been recorded has given us a lot of motivation, far from sitting and thinking what the hell we have done here we have tried to make the whole process profitable from the balance of the instruments to obtaining the best possible sound. We know that in other circumstances there are producers who might even hate our sound, but we consider that the whole process, the bands, see this as a challenge because we seek to give our best and not disappoint the producer, because from the moment you enter the studio there is more communication between the band and who is behind the console supervising that everything goes well, in this way the performance of each person is taken advantage of when recording their parts and making the process meticulously perfect at the time of mixing and mastering . In the end everything turned out great and both parties are happy with this new result, if you ask me if I would work with Dave again in the future the answer would be yes, and make it as many albums as possible. CR: Let's hope so, definitely both Dave's work on the sound and Wesley's on the covers have been strong points in the band's discography.
Here we find great moments like Terrastic Adaptation, We Eat Our Young, Scourge of the Offspring, A Photic Doom, Solastalgia (the most bombastic on the album) and Just Another Body, which is the longest on the album, by the way, Australian Tony Parker is a guest musician with keyboards, many think that the band is experiencing an interesting evolution since Death Atlas, what do you think about it? JE: We consider this as a sequel to Death Atlas. We always think about incorporating new elements for the band's sound, we thought at the time to include in Terrasite a bonus track or a cover that would be very accessible to people as we did previously with In the Kingdom of the Blind, The One -Eyed Are Kings (cover of Dead Can Dance). We looked at Death Atlas as a very complex album, perhaps at the time of its composition it was uncomfortable, but we looked at it as a challenge, it was a way to expand our sound that reminded me a lot of The Anthropocene Extinction from 2015, and we have maintained that active dynamic of writing and composing in the studio, that in the end generated enough confidence for us to be able to continue the evolution of Cattle's sound to this day.
Here the formula is variations in sound, and that's what we've been doing for years, mixing what we do with other influences makes us consume tons of different sounds and even things that are not related to metal, we could do something extravagant and that it be very fluid to what we do, that serves as a complement to our songs, at that point is where we expose our potential just like what happened with Death Atlas, we see in that album as a great scope, and after that confidence that we live we decided to implement new things with Terrasite where the band bets on exploring new nuances and new sounds. CR: We know that the album is dedicated to Gabe Serbian, who was the band's drums and keyboards and who died in 2022, let's talk about the concept, here there are references to the fact that humans are considered a destroyer of the planet, and that thanks to the abuse of the earth has become a devourer, the result of which is that humanity faces a new post Anthropocene period, are there more concepts within the Cattle universe with this new album?
JE: That's right, we dedicated the album posthumously to Gabe for the fact that he was an important part of moving the band forward, and this is a way of saying thank you for everything you've done to keep Cattle alive. as usual. About the concept with Terrasite this has been very different for us to be able to do something similar, I think we took the ideas directly from the cover, with the lyrics everything made sense with the music. Travis was looking to make a kind of multidimensional space and expose if everything happened in another world, and we see in Terrasite as a creature that symbolizes the rise of a new world after an apocalyptic period. In a few words we could say that it is like a rebirth after the earth has left to start all over again. The concept process was the first thing we tackled before making ideas based precisely on our line of thought.
We decided that this Terrasite is the creature that has known how to resist all kinds of adversities such as a natural catastrophe for example, and through its instincts it has sought a way to survive after humanity was destroyed, it could be something selfish or negative at a certain point seeing that the human consumes anything without assuming the possible consequences, we see all that on the cover, we look at the human and the creature that consume impulsively, they are both eating machines, and they just continue to devour the earth and all the resources that are available. around them, up to a certain point we could say that in the coming years, sooner or later, the human being could be part of a genetic mutation in order to survive under another form of life, in this way, that being that is born of a human-shaped cocoon is that character that is found in what Death Atlas ended a long time ago. One inquires what type of creatures are those that have survived after those changes, at first impression by the cover they are terrifying and that they live in the dark, they could be terrifying, only that people will know when they know the story in a general context because that creature excels in conditions where the earth does not have much color, where there is green grass, that its skin is pink with variations in its colors. In a few words we could talk about a hybrid creature. We are aware of what will happen later when we release this album and we think about something new later, these are questions that time will give the answers. We believe that the music has a lot of elements to fit perfectly in a soundtrack, it is something that is not very common for a Death Metal band, but now the argument is valid to combine two universes. The cover can mark a kind of symbolism that the music can reflect in various colors, between bright and dark. The music itself can be a superficial element, here you are seeing a new version of us, and that is where people want to know that new side of the band. CR: It is very interesting to know first hand everything related to the concept of the new album. For this occasion we have two singles. In your case, if the band released a third, what would be your favorite song?
JE: We have discussed on that point, in fact, there is a third single that is in progress, but that would be for later. Here I could reveal certain things to you, and there would be two songs that would be the candidates to be the next promotional video for Terrasite, one of them that has a special connection is The Insignificants, internally there are many people who love that song, and we are considering that point, and We've spoken to our managers and label, and they've told us that it might be a few weeks or so before the album comes out. Seeing the reactions to the songs previously in the final sessions, it is a fact that there will be more singles that will be coming out for the rest of the year, so we will see what happens with the people on the networks and another that is possibly a strong competitor is Dead End Residents, so we'll let time decide which song is next to hit video. CR: Speaking of Death Atlas, they released the single Bring Back the Plague at the end of November 2019 and in February 2020 the global alert for the pandemic was decreed, and nobody saw this coming.
Many remember the lines of: “Every body, a host, Every body, infected Corpses white as a ghost, Naturally selected Were you aware that you predicted something that would happen in a hypothetical future, and that it would happen weeks later? Scoreboard: Nostradamus - zero, Cattle – one (laughs) JE: Well the concept is originally from Travis, and it is a clear reference to the bubonic plague, we released the album at the end of 2019, that was the first single from Death Atlas, and suddenly months later the world confinement would arrive. The reactions to the song were rapid, many have written to us and asked us if we had indirectly predicted a plague, we suppose so (laughs). From my point of view, when we made the video, we decided that everyone would do the parts of him in his house, taking advantage of the situation due to isolation, and that all of that would not be boring while the restrictions were lifted. Seeing all this result I can safely say that Bring Back The Plague is a song that will be very difficult to withdraw from the band's setlist, it is a hymn that will forever be played at concerts, do not be surprised that more than one of us I yelled Bring Back The Plague (laughs) and that we play it 400 times in a year, so we're preparing several tours, one of them with Dark Funeral which will start in a few weeks, and in November with Amon Amarth. We will have more tours to be announced, and we will try to make changes to our setlists so that people can enjoy our discography. CR: Twenty-seven years of career, several albums released, tours around the world, and constant changes in your lineup that have brought life and testimony to the career of Cattle Decapitation, including bands that look to you as an influence.
How do you feel about being part of the great moments that the band has experienced in all these years? JE: I say this for myself and for the rest of my classmates. We have been the luckiest people in the world not only for the fact of playing in places we never thought of, but also for seeing people's reactions to our music, seeing and feeling the experience makes tours far from being work routines be special and we look for a connection with people, but also that we can have fun on both sides. One such example is Japan. The fans there are great and they give you all that energy at the shows, I must also mention our visit to South Africa, especially Johannesburg. We live those moments almost every day, and despite not being rich we have managed to make people appreciate our work, for example, it has been very special that people in Japan after our shows join us for a few beers and have time with them . Composing, writing and touring for thousands of people around the world makes all this time special and ultimately worth it for years to come. All this is very special in good and bad times. This is part of our history. CR: We know that a classic album like Humanure from 2004, has been censored for its cover, and they had to change it for a more accessible one, the original is currently a collector's item for fans. I don't know what other album in the Cattle discography suffered the same effect?
JE: Well, in addition to Humanure, the cover of To Serve Man also suffered rejection. Both albums had serious problems in Germany, and it was the same case that happened with Cannibal Corpse. We knew that there is a large concentration of people there who consume our material, and unfortunately, due to this impasse, those records did not go on sale in the two largest stores in Germany and we had to manage other options such as Best Buy or FYE so that people can go to buy them, but on the other hand we felt that because of problems like this, record sales would be paralyzed. We were in a constant debate on this point of moving forward without making changes or offering alternatives to people without falling into this type of problem again. With all the changes in the industry there is a lot of consumption especially in the physical media and to avoid that these situations screw us in the future. Perhaps this was at the wrong time and time, but now that we have learned from experience we see these processes as a kind of mechanism for bands to survive in the digital age, and for the physical to stay in place forever. CR: With the new album released on both CD, Vinyl and Digital, what is Cattle's next move in this part of their story?
JE: For now we have the tour with Dark Funeral that will start on May 11, from there we will be doing several dates in Canada, and for June we will play in Los Angeles, although at that point we are specifying the places where we are going to perform, so We invite you to keep an eye on our networks. We will be taking a few days off in between touring to do more promotion and will be back on the road in September, then we will be playing various festivals in Canada from November to December for approximately 5 weeks. So we will be constantly active there, then we will close the year in other cities in the United States. For 2024 we have contemplated touring in other regions, we are seeing if there are opportunities to be able to play in Latin America, due to the pandemic and with what we had previously with Death Atlas it became impossible for us, so with luck, work and team strategy we will seek to recover that lost ground and compensate the fans with a high quality show. CR: At the end of the interview Josh, what message do you want to send to those who enjoyed this report, and thank you for the time you have given us for this pleasant talk, we hope to talk later and follow up on the history of a great band as it is cattle decapitation
JE: Thanks to you Johonny for the questions and the time you have spent learning more about the band, thanks to the fans all over the world for the support you have given us in all these years, and we invite you to listen to Terrasite on May 12 in the different formats available. We hope that this new material is to your liking since, as I mentioned before, we are preparing new videos for the coming months, and we hope that by 2024 we will be able to reach places that we are going to play for the first time, if there are fans who wish to have us in their countries. Let them talk to their promoters and our agents will do the rest to make a special occasion possible. Thanks again, and we'll see you somewhere on the road. Special thanks to Sarah Lutz and Lucy Sky of Metal Blade / Looters for their help in making this interview possible, and to Josh Elmore for his time spent on this report.
