CULT OF LILITH
CULT OF LILITH
A Cosmic Maelstrom With A Baroque Flavor Conexión Rock Radio in the month of its 11th Anniversary brings to you in this special report a band that from distant lands has notably stood out on the world radar, and to everyone's surprise they enter through the front door with their record debut, winning by Its own right as one the most anticipated releases of 2020, starting its history with right foot. Our tour takes us to Iceland, precisely in Reykjavík, and where we talk with Mario Infantes, Vocalist of the band Cult Of Lilith, who enjoys an important moment with their debut record called MARA, which was released at the beginning of September via Metal Blade Records, which that have an excellent reception from fans and critics from several parts around of the world. Cult Of Lilith was formed in 2015, and they released with their EP Arkanum in 2016, and currently the line-up is conformed by Daniel Thor Hannesson and Kristján Jóhann Júlíusson- Guitars, Samúel Örn Böðvarsson- Bass, Kjartan Harðarson- Drums , and Mario Infantes- Vocals Next, we share with all of you this interesting interview: Conexión Rock Radio: Mario, good afternoon, greetings from Honduras, how is everything over there in Iceland with this pandemic? Mario Infantes: Hello, how are you Johonny, thank you for your interest in getting closer to us. Well things have been good here, even though the rest of the world is screwed up with this pandemic, as we live in a small country, and very few people live here. CR: I understand, here in America, especially in our region, things have been complicated since the highest peak of the pandemic generated collapses in the health system, deaths, and many infections. They are planning a reopening, but all of this indicates playing Russian roulette out of need for work and supporting families, as the saying goes "try to be rich ... or die trying" MI: It's complicated, but let's hope we can all get out of this complicated situation that the world is experiencing so that people can resume their things as they did before, I express my sincere wishes on behalf of the band for your readers around the world. CR: Start our report of this day in knowing of the first impressions that fans and critics have given to the debut album of the band called MARA released on September 4 via Metal Blade Records, everything indicates that the end of 2020 will be a good year for Cult Of Lilith despite the circumstances we live in.
How do you feel about taking this important step in your career? MI: as you mentioned, it is rare that the band has released this album in this situation, and we had tour plans for October, and far from being stopped we are promoting the album as far as we can, making videos and activities that keep the attention of the fans towards the album and the band, and we can't do anything else (laughs), we were a little sad that we couldn't tour, and we just have to change the chip and start working. CR: We know that throughout this year and living with this emergency has been difficult for bands and for the industry in general, were you aware of the risk of releasing the album in the midst of a pandemic? Many might think that they could delay it for the beginning of another year, but this was already a decision made that in the end the fans have been able to respond with the releases, implying the need for new music in this confinement, what do you think about this? MI: The truth would have been complicated for us, because this whole process took a year that this includes the final mix coming out of the studio, and waiting two years to get it out would be inconceivable, launching the album activates the band, and therefore we do several things, many events arise and that puts us to work in all senses. If we had waited another year, it would imply a very hard blow for us, despite the difficult times we have obtained a good response, and that is the positive of all the bad in this pandemic. CR: What impressions have you had of the people who have been able to listen to the album, whether in physical format or digital platform? MI: The truth has been a good reception from various fans around the world, and this has given us joy despite the fact that our music is "somewhat strange" and not very conventional, we had the impression that people were not going to like our proposal, suddenly when you listen to Death Metal combined with Flamenco and clean voices they will say that shit is this (laughs) but many have liked it and we have been receiving reviews from various parts of the world, and we are very, very happy with the final result of this album. CR: Let's talk about MARA, 8 tracks lasting 37 minutes, a fast and sonic assault that will leave a good taste in the ears, songs like Cosmic Maelstrom, Purple Tide, Atlas, Prophet Paloma, and Le Soupir du Fantôme (The Sigh Of The Ghost) what is the concept behind Mara?
MI: It's a bit difficult to define (laughs) because we are making the music we want and the album we want to hear. Each of us listens to very different things and not just metal. Taking into account our collective creative capacity we have made a mix as best we could (laughs) for that reason we don´t seek to pigeonhole ourselves in our sound, and for that reason we call our proposal “Necromechanical Baroque”. CR: This data you share is very interesting, and it fits perfectly in what you as a band present to the public, Le Soupir du Fantôme will draw attention to the operatic songs in Spanish that you do on this track, and that gives a dignified closure to Mara, will be one of the fan favorites in this debut. MI: In fact, it is one of my favorite songs, soon we will make a video performance like singing this song live, and people will like it very much. CR: We know that for this debut as such I had two studios under the supervision of Dave Otero, how did you feel about working with him for this debut?
MI: Dave's work was brutal and perfect, he already recorded many albums, and at first we were afraid that the whole process could leave me unsatisfied, and it is the first time in my life that I have received the final mix and that it has exceeded my expectations, and it has been much better than I expected. And when we heard him I just said fuck it, this has done justice to the work that we have done all this time, and I´m of the criteria to work with him again for future works. CR: Although the band released an EP called Arkanum a few years ago, in fact, the only original member is Daniel Thor Hannesson and this new line-up has been renewed since 2016, and your entry was in 2018 (you also combine with Jotnar who are de Canarias) how have you felt as musicians to exceed expectations with this work, and to be part of the history that Cult is currently living?
MI: For example, I´m excited to be part of Metal Blade because we will continue to make our music, whatever it is, having the label on our side represents a great boost for the band, and for that we are grateful to them. Despite the fact that we are part of a renowned record company, we are under pressure to want to do things well, and in the end MB has caught their attention our proposal, they were interested in us, and well, we are already part of their catalog of artists. CR: Curiously speaking of it, how did the contact between the band and the label come about, because this represents a very important point in Cult Of Lilith's career, and at the same time with the expectation of future releases with them. MI: This was all thanks to Dave Otero. When he finished the mixes and sent it to us he said: “hey, I loved the album, and I think this must be heard the people of Metal Blade” and we thought he was being nice to us. Three days passed and we received an email from the label saying that they wanted the band to be signed by them, and it was a big surprise, but at the same time we thought that MB was looking for bands that had an already defined trajectory and a large fan base, and being Cult Of Lilith, a band debuting with Mara, we had nothing but an album to support our effort. CR: The first singles are Cosmic Maelstrom and Purple Tide, what reactions have you had from people in various parts of the world on your official channels?
MI: The reactions were more than positive, and it was quite a surprise, as a musician I have made several albums, and this one in particular has been very good. I have been very critical of myself, and despite everything I have felt very good. We have had many positive reactions and few have been negative reactions, I suppose they are from people who are not open to the proposal that we present, perhaps they thought of a more puritanical proposal, and at the end of the day we have more comments in favor of the album and that leave satisfied. We have also seen reactions to our videos, it has been very interesting that many people start to know us, it is something completely surreal (laughs) another thing is that several reviews have come out of various Latin American media and all this has been a plus for the promotion of Mara because when people meet us, they identify with us and connect with music, we have loved all of that. CR: Something that will attract attention is that you are a person of Spanish origin and that you currently live in Iceland, in fact, you have already lived there for several years, what memories do you have of your entry into Cult Of Lilith? Did they call you to audition, or was it through a friend who put you in touch with them?
MI: I moved to Iceland, and I saw that there was an ad on Facebook that a group of musicians in Reykjavik was looking for a vocalist and I simply offered what they were looking for, and Daniel (Hannesson) answered me and there were other offers, but with the The demos that he sent me about what would later be Mara made me fall in love with the first listen, and that's how I got into the band. CR: If the songs are a point of attention in Mara, the cover is also one of the notable aspects, what details can you share with us? MI: The cover was the work of Eliran Kantor, he did a spectacular job with what he offered us based on the ideas we had, and especially about the name and the general context of the band, he knew how to capture them as a canvas. As he has a Jewish family and of Hebrew descent, he was already familiar with the story of Lilith because that character comes from that culture, we are satisfied with what he did, and he understood what we were looking for. CR: And from the name of the album that you can share with us, is there any connotation related to the culture of Iceland? MI: All this is related to the Middle Ages, especially with people who suffer from sleep paralysis, many thought that it was a demon that sat on your chest and that they related it as one of Lilith's servers. And all the songs were related as stories reflected in dreams that were my experiences but mixed with fantasy overtones, and each song was like a dream to each other but one different from the other, and we considered that that concept was perfect for the album. To make things easier, Mara's name comes from Nightmare. CR: I want to know your opinion of the problem that the pandemic has caused in the music industry around the world, as you know how to release an album can imply a risk in investment matters but on the other hand many fans have been able to respond in supporting the bands as a measure of filling this void with good proposals like the one you have, what do you think of it?
MI: The truth is that this whole situation generally hurts. As artists, in addition to recording albums, we tour, and this has made it impossible for us to make live presentations and sound the album on several continents. One of the points that will be complicated from now on is that travel visas will cost much more, and it is one of the points against that as artists we must face, and by not doing tours economically it affects us. The positive side of all this represents the response of the fans, despite being our first album it has been well received and we are happy about it, I tell you that we will soon do our first concert in two years in Reykjavík, and there will be many people who will wish learn about our proposal, and from there see what it holds for us on tour matters to other continents. CR: Perhaps it is a daring question that I am thinking of asking you or perhaps something hasty seeing the success that Mara is having internationally.
Are you aware that this album can set a guideline to follow for future albums or do you plan to expand into other themes inside of the Cult Of Lilith universe? MI: The truth sounds very curious (laughs), when we received the mix and commented with Daniel, will we release a better album than this one? And he was very sure that we could possibly do something that can surpass Mara in all respects, and I said to myself, this will be a challenge after all this process. Although the process lasted a whole year, there are ideas written for a second album, and the idea is to evolve and experiment with things in the sound of the band to make our works different from each other. CR: After the concert that you will offer, do you have more activities scheduled for the remainder of 2020 or early 2021, or is the outlook still uncertain for the band at that point? MI: There are several offers to tour, but as we all know everything is at a standstill. For now we are concentrating on promoting the album, making more videos and playthoughs. Until when travel and health conditions can be improved on several continents, we would leave our agenda open to organize something, so for now the only option is to wait until everything is reactivated within the music industry in terms of concerts. CR: What message do you want to send to those who read this special report, and in the same way I want to thank you for your time in answering our questions for Enlace Rock Radio, from now on the doors for Cult Of Lilith are open and it will be an honor to promote in our programming your music.
MI: That people give the album a chance, that they listen to it, that they invest 36 minutes of their life in headphones and that they enjoy the album from beginning to end, and that they have a good impression of what we offer to those who will listen. our proposal, and I want to thank you Johonny for this pleasant conversation you have for your readers. CR: Mario, thank you for your time here, and I thank my friends at Metal Blade as always for the opportunity they gave me to talk to you this day, send my regards to the rest of the band and best of luck with this adventure that They start with Mara in 2020, and we hope again to be able to talk in the future about the history that Cult Of Lilith begins to make with good music. I wish you an excellent day there in Finland! MI: A hug from here, see you soon! Special thanks to Sarah Lutz and Kathleen Roe for their help in make possible this interview, and Mario Infantes for their time from Iceland.
