DANKO JONES
A Triple Dose of Rock Made in Canada for the World! Canadian Rock is the protagonist in this special report that we deliver to all of you in the international interviews on Conexión Rock Radio, and we definitely have another release here that adds to the best of 2021, so make yourself comfortable and we invite you to take reading what we have on this occasion so that you know first-hand their history and of course, the future plans that these musicians have with their new record production under their arms. On this occasion we spoke with the great Danko Jones, who is experiencing a great moment in his career with the release of his 10th career album called Power Trio, which was released on August 27, and from the moment of his first advances the expectation has been very great to the point that many are waiting for the world situation to normalize to go to one of its live presentations and enjoy a great journey through its history. Currently, Danko, in addition to being Voice and Guitar of his band, accompany him on this adventure with John Calabrese- Bass, and Rich Knox- Drums. We invite you to know about their 25-year career in music, the experiences left in the Power Trio production process, curiosities of their history, how the band faces the global pandemic of Covid 19, and that they experiment in your homes or your work a triple dose of rock made in Canada for everyone! Gentlemen… if you think rock is dead… fear not… I just take a short break to come back recharged and full of energy! Conexión Rock Radio: Hi Danko! Good morning from Honduras, I hope everything is fine over there at home, and it is an honor to make this special report with you this time, and to share with our readers the next news and surprises that you have in this 2021, welcome! Danko Jones: Thank you Johonny for your interest in talking to me on this day, as well as my good wishes that all is well there in your region. CR: Thank you for accept our interview request. We want to know how this whole situation has been for you and your bandmates, especially there in Canada, which has left us since the beginning of 2020 without concerts or tours.
DJ: Well, I mean it was terrible, as you know the whole year was canceled in terms of tours and concerts, as well as the music industry that suffered a severe blow. As artists we could make an album in a different way, so we wrote it in isolation, in general, we struggled in these circumstances, to the point of evaluating and criticizing what we did, that implied sending files back and forth, so it was a different new way of doing things, but I think it worked. I mean, the fact that we had nothing to do gave us a lot of time on our hands so that we could work on this new album, improve the guitar solos, make changes to the lyrics, make more melodies, and spend more time on fixes if something doesn't work, we just move on to the next idea, and at the end of the process we have 11 powerful songs. CR: It's good to know that you overcame all those problems in the middle of the confinement, and we are going to share good news for your followers around the world, the band released their 10th work called Power Trio on August 27th through Sonic Unyon Records, and many will look at this album as a winner that will be acclaimed and praised on various continents around the globe.
What expectations does the band have with this excellent album? DJ: Thank you very much for your comments on the album. We have the same expectations every time we release a new album, and we want each album to sell 10 million copies. (laughs) I mean that would be amazing, and every time a band releases something new it is inevitably wanting to imitate their way of doing great things and having great success, but realistically, I know it probably won't happen, or what it could do is give us a lot. reasons to tour, and with vaccines now available to all, hopefully we can overcome the pandemic and move on to start touring again, and with this album it is the perfect reason to hit the road and get closer to the people. And we've been here for 25 years, we've never been number one, we've never gone gold or platinum, we just keep releasing albums, and now we're on the 10th album and we're going to move on, put out and break it all like always, you know That is all we can and know how to do. CR: I must tell you that this album is from now on another classic of your discography, enjoying songs like I Want Out, Good Lookin, Dangerous Kiss, Blue Jean Denim Jumpsuit, Let's Rock Together or Start The Show are the highlights of Power Trio and that people expect to enjoy these songs in a live show. How does the band feel about releasing a great work like this in these strange circumstances?
DJ: I feel very good about the album, and people have really liked it, and we have had good reactions in other countries outside of Canada. For example, I Want Out is number one in Germany and it is the first time that one of our songs has reached number one anywhere and even more so because of not being able to tour at the moment. It's nice to know that we were number one, but it sucks that we can't tour and take advantage of those things. But I'm happy that people everywhere are enjoying Power Trio more than the latest releases we've made years ago, and this is indicative that many people around the world are hungry for new music in this pandemic. CR: Something that will attract attention is the cover, a lightning bolt and 3 atoms, many will think of an energetic album and 3 members who have perfect chemistry in their music.
What is the concept behind this new album? DJ: I think you answered your own question, and I agree with you on the details of the cover, I tell you that for our last album A Rock Supreme (2019), it is one of my favorite covers throughout our career. In the same way Below The Belt has a great cover, however it was very busy, and there were many details that would take time to do the album cover, so with Power Trio we just simplified it and made it very simple with an image that only It hits you and me I think it's actually the right thing to do because people like the new cover art, but yes, there is something about the chemistry, the energy, the course of the atoms, the trio, all of that reflects power and at the same time connotes energy and I consider this as a simple, but quick and direct point that the fan will like when they have the album in their hands. CR: What experiences do you have working with Eric Ratz on the Power Trio mixing and mastering process? DJ: Working with him has always been a great experience in the studio. He has produced with us Fire Music in 2015 and Wild Cat in 2017 and has contributed over all these years to perfectly shaping our sound, and since we met in 2015 things with him have been great and we hope to maintain that working chemistry in subsequent releases. CR: You have recently had participation with various bands for example with Ritual Dictates, and also with Sepultura on the track Sepulnation for their new album SepulQuarta, by the way Andreas and Derrick applauded your appearance on this album.
What impressions do you have of working with them for these live sessions? DJ: What can I tell you, Sepultura is one of my favorite bands of all time so when Andreas asked me if he wanted to participate in SepulQuarta I was taken by surprise and said Oh my God! I was so happy that he asked me and then he said: you choose the song, and I ran home. I was so excited and started looking through my records for the song I could play at that moment. First I thought of Desperate Cry (by Arise) but I thought, the best thing is to do something from Derrick's time in the band and I decided to play a Nation song, and it is one of my favorite albums at that time. So I selected Sepulnation because it talks about the band and especially the fans, and it was so much fun to do and I really love how it turned out. I am very happy with how it turned out, and I am very proud to have participated in the album.
It's like a feather in my cap, it's something that no one can take away from me and yes I'm so happy and then when I work with Ritual Dictates I have a friendship with them since they played in the early years of 3 Inches of Blood, and Justin asked me and I was so excited to collaborate with them and I sent them vocals in different styles like a rock style, I even did a black metal version of their style, but they chose the version in which I was more comfortable with the song which was the rock version. And I'm happy with how it turned out and that Ritual as a band is continuing with more work. CR: We know that during all these years you have worked with labels like Bad Taste and Aquarius.
In this case Power Trio would be the first feature film with Sonic Unyon even though they released a single 7 and an EP years ago, correct me if the data is correct or not. How do you feel working with them for this new album? DJ: The information you have is correct, with Bad Taste and Aquarius we have released our albums and they have taken care of the distribution outside of Canada. With Sonic Unyon we had a working relationship between '98 and '99, after that we took different paths, and well, 20 years later we are again crossing forces with this new album. We know that seeing the time in which they (the label) have been active in the business we knew that they were the only ones who could be trusted, and even though they worked with many bands, most of them have already retired and others decided to resign. And the good thing about all this is that Sonic Unyon are still active. Despite our differences, we are still good friends with their staff, and we are proud to reestablish our working relationship with them, and now with Power Trio released worldwide we believe that this move for the band made a lot of sense and of many benefits after several meetings to result in this album. I am very happy that the band is part of Sonic Unyon. CR: 25 years of career, 10 studio albums ... it's quite a story
Are you satisfied with everything you have achieved to date? DJ: The truth is. I mean, the only thing standing in our way like the pandemic, and for the love of God, we can get over this damn thing, we can keep touring and playing like it was before all this trouble happened, and that's part of it. that all bands suffer under these circumstances, but on the other hand we are happy that despite all these years of careers we can be part of festivals or headlining many tours. but for the most part I'm glad how it turned out that you knew we were still close. With everything so far I have no complaints, and especially participating in a Sepultura album is a special point of my life as a musician. CR: In the history of the band there are albums that can already be considered classics like Never Too Loud, Rock and Roll Is Black and Blue, We Sweat Blood and Below The Belt. What makes Danko Jones successful in the industry? Its members, the producer? A mix of both? Is there a formula in the band to do high quality work? Comments ... DJ: JC (Bassist) and I have been together in this band since the beginning, so 25 years, so that might have something to do with that as well the simple fact that we never stopped, never gave up, and that's what people have noticed during all that time that we have been consistent and we have always determined to move forward in everything, and we never stopped because we were exhausted or stressed or if we wanted to do something different, like many bands, and that is why we have lasted so long time on the scene. The important secret is that we are a good band, that's the fundamental thing, whether people listen to it or not, we are just a good band and if you put us in front of people and allow us to do what we can do, we will last and we will be there, so in the end I think we have shown this and much more. CR: Seeing all the success and good times that the band has experienced throughout its career, many people think that Danko Jones' current line-up is the most perfect and stable during all these years. DJ: I agree with that comment. In Rich's case he has been in the band longer than any drummer we have ever had, this is his eighth year and his fourth album, so he has been on more albums than any other drummer and this has given us an important balance as band. I consider at this point as people and as musicians the most important thing is that we all get along and, therefore, you would be surprised to know how many people look at us on and off stage that we have that mutual respect for each other and take care of each other. In the industry there are usually many people who are integrally broken who are attracted to this environment and the personalities are sometimes too big to be around and that is what causes many things like friction, and inevitably it is the main cause. that a lot of rock bands have breakups, so you really don't see all of what's going on behind the scenes, and it's totally avoidable if all possible ways keep the ego in check, and all of that lies in mutual respect within of your band. CR: If the pandemic didn't exist, the band would be celebrating its 25th anniversary.
Are you planning to go on a special celebration tour once all this is normalized? DJ: I think the best way to celebrate 25 years as a band, I mean the most legitimate way is to release your 10th album of new material, not a box of greatest hits, not a special commemorative anniversary, whatever that is. It always means that you are looking back and that also means that this is it. Now you just have to look back where we are looking for words and that is the best way to celebrate 25 years the fact that we have a new album of new material and we are still viable. CR: In recent years, many bands hold special celebrations to revisit live classical music albums.
In this case, Born a Lion turns 20 next year, and Rock and Roll Is Black and Blue its first 10 years. Are you for or against this type of celebration, or do you have plans to launch a special anniversary edition? DJ: The truth is we are not against it and there was talk about it, but due to the pandemic there could have been nothing really while we put out a new album anyway and the more I think about it, the more I thought well, this is the way to celebrate it is to put out a new album don't look back don't go hey look what we did there and we are not a legacy band we are a new contemporary band and after 25 years saying you are I am still a rookie and I think it is a great achievement. of those songs that all of us who were under the radar, no one really you know brought us words like we could have published and released new albums and this is how we celebrate it by just not celebrating in the traditional way, but celebrating it as a contemporary band and that's why we put out a new album. CR: Has the band been contemplated soon as part of the promotion of the new album to present it in a streaming concert? Or are you of the opinion that the best thing is to wait for everything to normalize and play a concert in person ... comments ...
DJ: Actually we already presented the album for two live broadcasts on two dates of the weekend which were Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th, the first broadcast was for the European audience, and because of schedule reasons they saw it at night. While the second was in a room with 50 people where they enjoyed a complete setlist face to face, and we have contemplated later on making a streaming that is watched simultaneously in several countries around the world, with this will be the beginning of the celebration of the launch for Power Trio. CR: Once this emergency is over, do you have plans to tour Europe, the United States or Latin America by 2022, or are you waiting to reschedule pending dates? DJ: We have played a couple of shows in Canada domestic shows and we have another show on August 29th playing Edmonton, on September 12th or playing Truro Nova Scotia we are doing every 2-3 weeks playing a show and then there are plans to do a small tour of our area in December, but we have announced the dates of the European tour from April to June 2022 without mentioning a dozen festivals that are reserved for the summer of 2022. It all depends on the pandemic, the variants and the shots and everything works out the way it is then we can do it but if not we will have to push it again but hopefully we can do it. CR: Danko, what message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview?
I want to thank you for the time allotted to do this special report for Conexion Rock Radio. DJ: Thank you very much Johonny, it was a pleasure to talk with you in the same way to our fans in Latin America. We hope to see you soon on a tour, take care of yourselves and enjoy our new album. CR: Danko, thank you very much for your time! Best of luck to you and your bandmates with this new album!
