DESASTER
The Oath of an Iron Ritual.

DISASTER
A Clash Between Renaissance and Darkness Conexion Rock Radio in its international interviews brings to all of you another interesting report, and especially for those who like Black / Thrash Metal, and for those who want to hear new things ... this is our recommendation this month! We traveled to Koblenz, Germany, and there we talked with Guido “Sataniac” Wissmann, Vocalist of the band Desaster who will bring us up to date with their current affairs and history, and that in 2021 they return to action with their new album called Churches Without Saints, and that for many this work will be one of the most anticipated releases so far this eventful year. Desaster were formed in 1988, and a year later they would become known on the scene with their demo The Evil Dead Will Rise Again, but their first foray into serious discography with A Touch of Medieval Darkness from 1996, from there, would begin. a career on the rise that to this day has enshrined them on major tours and festivals around the world. The current line-up is made up of Infernal- Guitars, Odin- Bass, Sataniac- Vocals, and Hont- Drums. Sit back, grab a beer and some snacks, and learn interesting details about the history of Desaster, and the future that these Teutons offer with this new album that is A Clash Between Renaissance and Darkness. Conexión Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Sataniac, we extend our good wishes that you, your families and bandmates are well at home, and it is an honor to make this special report with our readers about the important news that a great band like Desaster has in 2021, welcome!
Sataniac: Thanks to you Johonny, I also extend my wishes to the fans of Honduras and Latin America, wishing to play soon in those countries! CR: Start this conversation with you to know how it has been for the band to face this strange situation there in Germany with the pandemic that has caused that there are no tours or concerts? S: Yes, we played our last Show in Sweden in March 2020, and after that everthing was locked down. But we decided to lay our focus on “Churches Without Saints” so we did the best that was possible in this situation. CR: Let's throw away the bad news and talk about the good news, the band released their new album called Churches Without Saints in June 4th via Metal Blade Records, which breaks a silence of 5 years since The Oath of an Iron Ritual.
Everything indicates that this will be another great work on his discography. What expectations do you have in releasing an excellent album in these strange circumstances? S: I think we made a good album with authentic songs. There is no special expectation. It was time for another Desaster album after 5 years. This is like always, we are not here for reaching world domination, we only want fun with the things we love. CR: In this time of quarantine many will cheer this album from start to finish to the point of saying that most of the tracks will fit perfectly in a live set list tracks like Learn to Love the Void, Armed Architects of Annihilation, Failing Trinity, Endless Awakening are perfect examples that the band has a great bet on their hands. Many will think that God has abandoned us in this pandemic and the best thing is to renounce that someone cares for us from above and that there are no more saints in the churches What is the concept behind Churches? S: There is no special concept behind the new album. I deal with themes like death, religion, hypocrisy, blasphemy and other naughty things. That’s nearly always the same with little details that change. And I think the most blasphemic thought is that, that there should be a god taking care of us. Who do you think you are? Hahahaha... CR: For this new album there are changes in the band's lineup.
Marco "Hont" Hontheim is the new drummer despite being with you in 2018 this is his first album with Desaster. What are your personal impressions of the contribution that Marco has made on this new album? S: He is a real metalhead and maniac for sure and plays his drums with passion. That’s all what matters, and we are very happy that we found him after the departure of Tormentor. It was pretty cool to work on the new album with him. We had a lot of great and funny experiences during the writing of the album in 2020. CR: One of the highlights of the album is the production that was in charge of Jan "Janosch" Gensheimer, as well as the excellent cover of the Brazilian Marcos Miller
What experiences did the band have in working with Jan and Marcos on this occasion? S: Jan is our live mixer for some years right now, and it was a logical step for us doing the album with him. Especially during the look down it was pretty cool to write, perform and record in our own rehearsal room with Jan living only 50 kilometers away from us. Marcos is a very talented guy, and it was fun to work with him. Maybe not for him because we had a lot of things to change til he was finished with the artwork. Hahaha... CR: This is the ninth studio album in the band's history and the fifth featuring Metal Blade (featuring Angelwhore from 2005).
How do you feel about in being part of one of the most important labels in the world? S: We are quite happy working with Metal Blade for years right now. And of course they released HELL AWAITS the most important and best album in the world. Maybe that fact makes me a little proud releasing via Metal Blade. CR: Your debut with the band was in 2002 with Divine Blasphemies, to this day Desaster has released albums that have been very well received by fans around the world.
Being your voice of the band, what is your point of view of the musical evolution that the band has had from your entry to this new work, have you had comments from the fans if this evolution has been favorable or not in the sound of Desaster? S: Of course there is some evolution in our sound, but I think only in small doses. We still stand to our roots. What else should we do? And we are still happy an hungry doing new songs with Desaster. There are always some differnet vibes on any Desaster release, but at the end of the day we stay heavy and ugly. CR: Speaking of Divine Blasphemies, curiously in 2022 it turns 20, also The Arts of Destruction turns 10.
Have you contemplated (if the pandemic allows it) to make a celebration by revisiting this classic or to reissue it with extra content? S: There is a re-release of Divine Blasphemies on Iron Pegasus. But we did not plan anything like that for “The Arts Of Destruction”. That’s the part of the record companies. If the release is still availlible for a normal price I don’t need any re-release. CR: Guido, as you know, many musicians have their jobs and others live entirely from music.
Seeing this situation, what the gangs are going through with this pandemic, have they contemplated any strategy to stay afloat monetarily? S: We have our jobs to pay our bills. And I think that’s a big opportunity for us not beeing addicted to the “business” or any other shit and of course we are sure not to kiss asses for anything. Maybe that’s the main reason that Desaster exists over 30 years right now. CR: Many young Thrash, Death and Black metal bands see Desaster as an influence. What do you think of this phenomenon of the new blood and the new waves of bands around the world? S: Of course this is a big compliment, and it makes us a little proud that we leave some things behind. Really great. CR: What is your point of view on this trend of bands with streams? Is Deaster for or against this?
S: First of all everyone can do what they want. For us it’s not interessting at all because we need the crowd and the audiences. We need to feel what happens. So, like I told before, we don’t need to do things like that only to earn money. I’m even very sceptical when it comes to pandemic safety concerts with less audiences and other strange rules. But of course we are looking foward to the day that shit ends, and we can enter the stages again. CR: Once this situation normalizes, do you have any pending tours to reschedule or is the outlook uncertain for live shows for now? S: We don’t play tours for years right now. The exception confirms the rule. We prefer single shows at the weekends. Most of the shows booked last year, was first postponed to this year, and now to the next year. We will see what happens. CR: What message do you want to send to those who have read this interview, and I want to thank you for the time you gave us at Conexion Rock Radio, it has been an honor to be able to speak with you this day. S: Thank you for your time and you interest in Desaster. It’s always a great pleasure to see and feel that people are really into our music. CR: Guido, thank you for your time, as well as our friends at Metal Blade Records for making this communication possible there at home. Again the best hits with this tremendous album and the best for all of you there in Germany! S: Thanks Johonny, a hug for you and all your readers in Germany! Special thanks to Sarah Lutz from the Metal Blade Records Press and Promotion team for her help in making this interview possible, and to Sataniac for the time allotted on this report.
