DIAMOND HEAD
CR: La banda lanzó durante varios años canciones clásicas como Helpless, The Prince y It ´s Electric.
Pero especialmente Am I Evil? I evil, yes I am, Am I evil, I am man”.

DIAMOND HEAD
The Closing of a Circle and the Rebirth of a New Era One of the most important bands and influence for several generations appears in our international interviews on Conexión Rock Radio and that by the end of this eventful 2020 and the beginning of 2021 they return to the load with several surprises for their fans around the world and that in This special report you will know interesting details and surprises which will generate great expectations. Our contact went to London, UK. And we had the honor of talking with the Guitarist and Founder of the band Diamond Head: Brian Tatler, who shares with all of you the great moment you live with the launch and special celebration of his classic work Lightning To The Nations, which in this past 2020 arrival to its 40th Anniversary, and in which they had contemplated a world tour to celebrate this event with their fans, but due to the pandemic caused by Covid 19 all this would remain in the background. But far from sitting idly they would release a special version where the band would re-record this NWOBHM classic in its entirety, adding some surprises that will be to everyone's delight, once you hear it both in physical and digital format. The band in addition to Tatler on Guitars is complemented in their line-up by Karl Wilcox- Drums, Andy "Abbz" Abberley- Guitars, Rasmus Bom Andersen- Vocals, and Dean Ashton- Bass. We also address curiosities in the history of Diamond Head through the years, the important influence towards other bands, especially with Metallica, the excellent reception of their most recent album The Coffin Train, released in 2019, and the possibility of a new record work that sees the light sometime in 2021. Next, we invite you to enjoy the retrospective of a band that for more than 40 years is considered by many as cult, and that invites us to be eyewitnesses of The Closing of a Circle and the Rebirth of a New Era. Conexión Rock Radio: Brian, how are you! Greetings from Honduras, Central America I hope you are well with this pandemic and I send my good wishes to all of you there in London, and it is a great honor to speak with you and share with our audience about the upcoming news that a great band like Diamond Head have for their fans in various parts of the world. world, welcome! Brian Tatler: Thank you very much Johonny, very nice of you! CR: Start this special report with you in knowing the point of view that the band has in facing this situation that has been negative for many bands this year and that Diamond Head is no exception.
BT: The truth is, this situation has not been fun and everyone in the band is fine despite all this confinement that has forced us to cancel our plans in 2020. In the midst of all the bad we released a new album and celebrated with all our fans the 40th anniversary of Lightning To The Nations despite the dark times we currently live in. CR: Let's put the bad things aside and talk about the launch of the new album, and it is not just any album, for those of us who know the history of the band this work is considered fundamental in the history within the NWOBHM, and we refer to Lightning to the Nations in its 2020 version, which was released on November 27 through Silver Lining Music
How do you feel about releasing this revisited classic in these strange circumstances? BT: When all this happened we had no choice but to release the album anyway. We thought about that decision when we were rehearsing the songs and the covers. Within our plans we had contemplated making a special live presentation, and the moment the confinement extended, I thought in my mind that the best thing for everyone was to enter the studio and record, we went ahead with what was programmed, and in the end we all stayed satisfied with the end result. Although within the plans was to release the album in July, all this was delayed until November, and we have had good reactions from various critics and places especially in the UK where we are located within the charts, and people have liked the album a lot. Perhaps for some they did not like the idea, but we had to do it, it was necessary to celebrate the anniversary since it is a unique opportunity, and when all this improves we will prepare a great live show, so it remains for you to enjoy the album. CR: We know that this year is the 40th anniversary of Lightning, were you looking to do justice by making a better sound with the current lineup? Without tours and a pandemic that affects the world far from celebrating it live, they decided to re-record the album for the fans, what details can you share with us? BT: When we entered the studio it was definitely improving the sound of the album, in some things of course technology was a point in our favor and Rasmus was the producer, and we had a very good experience recording The Coffin Train, so we decided to do the same in this opportunity, more powerful and maintaining the essence of the 1980 version. There will definitely be some slight changes to some songs like Sucking My Love for example, and we wanted to take all of this to more exciting and sonically powerful terrain. We did not want a fast process like in the 80's that everything was noisy or cheap recordings, and it was a good idea to revisit all these songs and give them that approach to the current time we live in. CR: Curiously, this re-recording includes other versions such as Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin, Sinner by Judas Priest, and Rat Rat Blue by Deep Purple, but the big surprise is No Remorse by Metallica, it was the initiative of the band or the label to do these covers?
BT: It was my idea and I expressed it out loud, it seemed that the lightbulb lit up at that moment (laughs) and the label was happy with the initiative to do this. From the moment we decided to re-record Lightning To The Nations I thought: why not include bonus tracks? And we decided to include covers, it was inevitable to include a Metallica song for this album because there has always been a special connection that Metallica has released over the years several versions of Diamond Head, and especially most of those that appear on the first. album. Select No Remorse because we felt that the song had the spirit and attitude of Diamond Head, so we decided to rehearse it, and we all thought it fit the sound perfectly, even the guitar solos remind me a lot of The Prince, Sucking My Love and Sweet and Innocent. As you know, Metallica has been influenced by Diamond Head, which we really appreciate that the band kept us in mind through our songs. CR: By the way, what a tremendous work from the creative team of the label had in making the video for No Remorse, there is a lot of connection between the band and Metallica, for example, the demons that appear in the single Jump In The Fire or the skulls do a reference to Pushead, one of their cover artists who worked with them for several years.
BT: That's right, for this video we had Costin Chioreanu's work and we gave them creative freedom to do something interesting. We previously sent his work to the label and they were in charge of contacting him. They sent him the track and when he received it he told us with great surprise that he is a Metallica fan. When the video was ready and we watched it, we told him that he did a fantastic job, and that the references that appear there were very good, both that of the devil and that of Pushead (many will think that it is a tribute to his contributions through the years ) at least we have not had problems due to copyright issues, and when people saw it on our YouTube channel they have received it very, very well. CR: We know that bands like Metallica, Megadeth among others have in their influences bands like Raven, Tygers of Pan Tang, Blitzkrieg, Killing Joke and Diamond Head for example, and that over the years they have done several covers like The Prince , Am I Evil, It's Electric and Helpless.
Everything indicates that the band is returning the favor to Metallica by having many generations keep an interest in the Diamond Head legacy alive. Have you had any reaction or comment from James and Lars towards the No Remorse version? BT: Yes. I had a reaction from Lars, he contacted me a few days after the release of the single and he told me that it is a great honor for the band, and that with that action a circle was closed. We have had several interviews like with Classic Rock for example and we expressed how good we felt with the reception of the video. The only one that I have not had the pleasure of speaking is with James Hetfield, I imagine that someone close to the band will have sent our material to him. And I still remember the times that we have shared a stage as it is a pleasant and exciting experience for both bands if we had a tour. Unfortunately I don't have James's number. CR: This album represents a bridge between the generation that grew up with the band for many years and the new fans who are getting to know you.
The 1980 version is very special like this new one, both are very good. I don't know if they have had reactions from fans towards the album, for example, that it sounds different or a little slower than the 80's version. BT: Not really. As everyone knows we have been locked up, which means that you cannot mix with anyone and all those measures were implemented since March and, therefore, no one has been able to do concerts to prevent infections from increasing at a concert or festival, so it is better to avoid all contact on a personal level. Many fans have contacted us through social media and expressed how they felt about the album, or being told that they didn't like it and it was disappointing. We have seen many reviews and we believe that we have done the right thing to launch it in a pandemic situation. I also set the tone for many bands, far from sitting idly by, to release their albums from the confinement, and in this situation we had to do something for the fans. CR: The Singer Rasmus Bom Andersen does a good work giving his personal touch to the songs, many will say that this version is very different from what Sean Harris sang years ago.
I have seen many videos on Youtube and I must say that Rasmus has known how to defend classical songs in his live shows. Did you get any comments on whether it is better or bad than the original? BT: On the reactions they have been quite positive. Rasmus is a great singer and people have admired that. Since his entry in 2014 he has brought very interesting things to the band, and this has caused us to have a greater number of fans around the world and to confirm that Rasmus is a great vocalist who has made a change for the better in Diamond Head. CR: Among other things, how did you feel about the reception that fans and critics have given to this incredible album as The Coffin Train released in 2019?
BT: Things with the album have turned out very well, we had the opportunity to play three songs live at the time and people received them in a very good way. This work marked a change of habits within the band as far as writing and composition are concerned and we were all 100% committed to the process. The reactions to Coffin have been very positive and we have felt that this work has worthily maintained the sound and identity that Diamond Head has been doing since 1976, especially on guitars. During all these years we have worked first on the riff and then on the lyrics, now everything is easier, but we always try to maintain those bases to make great songs. CR: This is your second work with Silver Lining Music
How do you feel about being part of one of the most important record companies around the world? BT: It's a great label and we have a great working relationship. They help us a lot with interviews, press and news on social networks, they do interesting things that fans want to buy like CDs, normal and colored vinyls, and other accessories that are to the liking of the fans. Currently with this album we had a lot of pre-orders, and the label has had great respect for Diamond Head, and both the label and the band are satisfied with what we do. CR: The current lineup is considered by many to be the perfect lineup in Diamond Head's history, and everything indicates that the band is living a second youth with more than four decades of history and good music. What do you think of it?
BT: I think this is the best incarnation the band has had over the years. Some of its members are young people who pass the line of 30 years, and who have a lot to offer as musicians, and that enriches the legacy of the band because of the interesting chemistry that we all have in common. I have connected with many bassists, guitarists and drummers and I must say that I have had very, very talented people who have contributed their talent and experience to the band and this has helped us all to grow as people and musicians. I remember when Dean Ashton (Bass player) auditioned with us and I consider him to be one of the best bassists I have had in years, to speak of Rasmus is to speak of a person who has a great vocal range that is ridiculously high (laughs) many will say that he has a similar vibe to Robet Plant or Rob Halford, and it's very interesting how he can handle the songs at will, and that's one of the reasons why Diamond Head has taken another level. CR: The big question:
With this lockdown, has the band contemplated releasing a new album for 2021? BT: For now there is nothing concrete, as you know the confinement has prevented us from meeting for exchange or write ideas. For that it involves making demos, recording and mixing the new songs, and to be realistic I have written several things taking advantage of this confinement, and I have many bases of what is possibly a new album, I will only tell you something from now on: everything would start in the first days of April 2021. CR: With this global emergency caused by COVID-19, many concerts and festivals were canceled, as well as delays in releases, Splitups.
Being a musician, are you aware that this emergency could affect you financially? BT: The whole situation that has affected us is terrible and sad at the same time, especially because of the bands that for economic reasons separate. All of this is understandable because they are not making money. Many bands invest their savings in new instruments, recording studios, budget for an album, and some musicians have their jobs and struggle to bring a livelihood to their tables. It is very complicated for everyone, since this emergency has completely ruined the music industry with the cancellation of festivals, the closure at home and the closure of operations of concert halls, despite all the bad we are struggling in the middle of this crisis and we are waiting for this situation to improve and not go back where we started. We had planned to play in April, and do several tours in South America, and we were excited to play for the people of those countries and we didn't know what would happen later, and the best thing was to invest time in the studio and record the album. We hope that this situation will normalize in the coming months as it is necessary for bands and promoters to reactivate everything related to concerts. 2020 definitely is and will be remembered as a disastrous year for music globally. CR: Seeing the excellent reception of the new album, have you thought about recording something else with this current line-up?
Could it be for Borrowed Time's 40th Anniversary in 2022, or are you looking to do justice for a work you consider underrated in the Diamond Head discography? BT: I don't think so. With Lightning To The Nations it was an excellent opportunity to re-record the songs, revisit them on a CD, play them live, and give them a decent focus and sound as they deserve. Remember that historically Metallica has made 4 versions of the debut album, which we consider as something of great significance. With Borrowed Time for now there are no priorities or future plans. I remember that we recorded it with Mike Hedges in a record time of 3 weeks and it was something completely different than what we did with Lightning To The Nations and interesting songs came out of that stage: Call Me and Don't You Ever Leave Me were examples of that. job. That is why we have considered that Lightning had a greater impact, and for that reason we decided to re-record it, despite the great moment we lived in those days it was something great to make another album like that. CR: The band released classic songs like Helpless, The Prince and It's Electric for several years.
But especially Am I Evil? How do you feel about having written a song that has become a classic? I think it is a great song and an essential anthem for many generations of headbangers around the world, and it is inevitable to sing at the top of their lungs: “Am I evil, yes I am, Am I evil, I am man”. BT: I am so thankful that people like it, and exciting that something we had written instantly became a classic, it was just another song and we felt like we were always trying to outdo ourselves as musicians in writing and making songs, and when you listen to Am I Evil you are convinced to say: Yes, this is a great song! You give that feeling of taking a look back, and seeing Ritchie Blackmore's expression when they wrote Smoke on The Water at the time. It would be worth seeing his expression when he said "Oh my God this is a great song", when listening to the guitar riffs you realize that you have a classic in your hands, in our case 45 years later we are still impressed that this song is still valid in people's taste many years later, we definitely proudly have our own classic anthem. CR: Once this emergency is over, do you have plans to tour Europe, the United States or Latin America in 2021, or do you consider that the outlook is uncertain for touring?
BT: We are always a band that we want to play, I really love to play in new places that we have never been before, you know I have never been to Mexico, South America or New Zealand so if anyone offers any chance to play in this or in several countries we would try to make it happen. Currently, the situation of the pandemic and Brexit has complicated things for us, and we want to spend a good time with the public when we are all at a concert. We know that it is a challenge to prepare strong logistics in flights, transportation, hotel, food, and a good backline. Hopefully everything will normalize and play again for fans of the band around the world. CR: Brian, what message do you want to send to those who listen and see us in this special interview?
