Talented musicians like Roni Seppänen and Loïc Tézénas- Guitarras, Dominique Dijoux- Piano and Keyboards, and Toni Paananen- Drums accompany her on this new adventure. In this report Will know about its interesting history and the beginning of a new adventure ... from the seashore. Conexión Rock Radio: Eilera, Greetings from Honduras, Central America, it´s a honor to have you here for our audience and readers who wants to know about the upcoming news that Eilera have for their fans this year, welcome! Eliera: Thank you very much and hello everyone! :) CR: Start my report with you in congratulating for the release of their new album called Waves via Inverse Records, which was released in the first days of March.
How do you feel in writing another interesting chapter in the Eilera's story, and what are your expectations with the fans? E: Thank you. I feel that that this album was a necessary step for me in my songwriting journey. Never before had I made songs with such strong folkish soul. I felt early on in the writing process that I was building a bridge between ancient and present times. I had to find a way to do it while maintaining the Eilera print on the album. It was a new way of working for me, which started from acoustic guitar demos and built up with more or less additional layers of acoustic instruments tracks, for the most. Then I added, where I felt was necessary, modern arrangements, such as concrete samples, electric and electronic sounds. Samples of waves can be heard throughout the whole album. I had decided to leave more space to my musician collaborators and therefore, I worked in the opposite way that I usually do. I usually have production ready in my head while I compose the songs but on this album, I sent out demos to musicians in France, Finland and Chile and I arranged the songs and built the final production in interaction with what I received back from them via the internet. It was an exciting process and one that forced me to push back my own limits and open my mind to further possibilities… All in all, when I listen to Waves today, I think that it is the “Frenchiest” of my albums. I think I had an unconscious need to make an album for my beloved ones in France for whom the Rock/Metal culture is too much of a stranger. You see, Rock/Metal has arrived late in France and nowadays still, has remained marginalised and for many, a musical trend worthy of their contempt.
I have been misunderstood most of my musician life and this is something which I believe, has hurt me to some extent, without me always realising it. I think I wanted to give this album to those who had always hoped for me to make a softer album and I am glad I did so. As a musician I have unquestionably grown and I know I can use those new skills in the future too. As for my fans, I would understand if those who expect for me to make a new Fusion or Face Your Demons might be disappointed. But I invite them to really give a try to Waves, with an open mind and an open soul and I can guarantee them that it will feel good. CR: If Face Your Demons was an album acclaimed by critics and fans, many believe that Waves is an experimental work, and that defines a new direction in the sound of the band.
What motivated you in create a different atmosphere for this new album? E: I do not consider Waves to be a new direction. I consider it to be an entity of its own. Each of my albums has had its own personality, that fits with who I was in the times and place I made them. Each of them is a new step in my global work. If you listen to any of them, from the softest to the heaviest one, you will immediately recognise Eilera and you will know that I have never given up on the essentials. Eilera remains Eilera. I could compare this phenomenon to a novel saga, where every new book and story would be different, but where the main protagonist would remain and the essential feeling would be there. The unique spark for Waves came from a road-trip I took along the Ocean coast, after I had experienced a burn out in the city. I really felt that my music days were over. I did not feel the will to sing any longer. Yet after weeks of walking on empty beaches and swimming in desert creaks and really connecting with the Ocean, I felt my writing energy building again and before I knew it, I was writing new songs. Yet, I had to respect the muse that had fed them. Hence the organic, acoustic feel, the light in the album, its ever-moving nature, sometimes dramatic, sometimes joyful, such as the waves of the Ocean. CR: In same way, we have changes in the lineup of the band, Loïc Tézénas- Guitar, and Dominique Dijoux- Piano and Keyboards, and special guests you have renowned musicians on the scene: Juho Martikainen- Contrabass, who has played for many bands in Finland and other countries, Sami Hinkka, Bassplayer for Ensiferum, and the great Pereg Ar Bagol who plays the Bagpipes, Accordeon and Vocals for Boisson Divine and Skiltron.
I want to ask you on the one hand, how it feels in have new musicians in the band, and on the other the experiences with the guests in the studio. E: I have been playing with lots of musicians through the years. My idea with the line-up on Waves was to reconcile the two poles of my life: North and South, with southern France, where I grew as a teenager and a part of my adult life and Finland, where I live, still at this date. French guitarist Loïc Tézénas has been the bandmate I have shared the most with to date. He was there at the origin of Eilera and we worked together until after Darker Chapter… and stars. We actually used to play the guitar together even before that, in my previous band Chrysalis, in which Dominique Dijoux also played, as a keyboardist. It was a wonderful thing for me to have these guys back for the time of an album. It was also a nice thing for me to work in my mother tongue, the French language, with them. The last member of the “French team”, Pereg Ar Bagol, was a new acquaintance for me, recommended by a friend of mine. Our common knowledge of Celtic music, as well as the roots we have in common in the area of Gascony, were a solid starting point on which to build up. He introduced the Boha to me, a regional bagpipes, which fits wonderfully as an introductory instrument of Waves. As for the Finnish guys, I met them in Helsinki, through collaborations and common friends. Drummer Toni Paananen and guitarist Roni Seppänen were already playing on Face Your Demons. All of us mostly recorded separately. I received tracks back from the demos I sent to the musicians. Then I would eventually ask for corrections or just build over what I had received back. We recorded the drums in Moon Studio, the contrabass at the Genelec house and my vocals partly in an old wooden house in the Finnish countryside and partly in a warehouse, in studios we built ourselves with Tero Kinnunen, who engineered the recordings. Some extra guitar lines also came from chilean guitarist Jaco Dadà. Things went altogether really smoothly and with good, international vibes. One thing that warms up my heart now and which I know, always will, is to have this incredible team forever united on these songs… If you like to see the whole team at work, then I invite you to watch the music video of Soulmates in Youtube. It’s all in there. :) CR: Something that has caught the eye at first glance is the name of the album: Waves, and the cover you appear on a cliff.
What inspired you to make an album with a theme closely related to the sea, what is the concept behind Waves? E: I was aiming at an album cover that would give a feeling of positive energy and freedom. Even though the music is rather nordic, I wanted some warmth in it, unlike in the cover of its predecessor Face Your Demons for instance, which was introducing an album entirely composed in Finland. Waves has a lot more of France in it and a more organic sound, it had to show in the artwork.. The photo of me on the front cover was taken in France and for the landscape, I sent some of my photographs of my road trip to David Letelier, my visual collaborator. He saw photographs of Normandie and Bretagne before he started creating the landscape. Funnily enough, this is when we realised together that David, who is Chilean, has ancestors from French Bretagne. Regarding the theme of the waves: As I started writing the songs, following my road-trip, I felt I was aiming at catching the wild and healing soul of the Ocean. I would translate it into songs that I could bring back with me to the city, to offer to anybody who might be suffering from its dehumanising tendencies. That was my work basis. As I proceeded into the work, I widened my study of waves from those of the seas, to the sonic waves, emotional waves and all of those that the eye cannot see. The deeper I got into the work and the clearer it appeared to me, how all of them are connected with one another and how the whole world that surrounds us is made of waves. CR: This new album represents the debut with Inverse Records, how does the band feels in being part of an interesting label like this?
E: It is a good thing in my opinion to be working with business people who live close geographically and who are close culturally speaking. I can interact with them in person. I appreciate the open mind of the label. There is something fresh to it, in times of massive formatting. CR: Let's talk about the origins of the band for those who will know and hear you for the first time in this interview, we know that the band was formed in 2003 and released their first album called Facettes, although you previously sang with Bliss.
How was the idea of forming an interesting band like this, we know that your artistic name is related to your real name: Aurélie E: Bliss was a pre-Eilera. It was already Loïc and I, except that he made all the music and I wrote the lyrics and sang. As our work evolved, we realised it would certainly be a good thing that I also contribute to the music, which changed the sound of the songs that followed. Loïc was not willing to be the leading image of the project, so it was decided that it would be mostly represented by my face and also logically, carry a name that stuck to my skin. After we ended our collaboration back in 2012, I continued as Eilera and with different musicians. CR: Being you the vocalist and songwriter of the band, what is your source of inspiration for make great songs on your discography, which singers have been your influence?
E: In the beginning, my influences were female songwriters on the one hand - Björk and Tori Amos mainly, and melodic metal on the other - Iron Maiden, In Flames mainly. Celtic and nordic folk influences have always been there. Positive light and energy, imagination and research, a bit of magic, remain through my albums. CR: Four albums, 17 years, and many musicians who have played with you all this time, I want to know if you are satisfied with all the history that made you until today?
E: Five albums and one Ep, actually... Yes! I am very satisfied as a song-writer of the work that has been accomplished this far and I feel I have much more to achieve. As a singer I am improving all the time. My frustration, if I have one, would come from the live zone, as I have not been given the chance (financially mostly) to play on many stages yet. I wish I had met the manager or the music agent who would have accomplished more with me in this direction, but our paths with this person have not yet crossed. CR: Many think that this album may be perfect if can be played all in acoustic, have you ever considered make any special edition of the album in this format?
Could be Acoustic Waves like example… comments E: I don’t think there will be a different edition of this album. I mean, it was meant to sound this way. Parallel to regular shows, I would like to also play its songs in intimate events, which would be the occasion to focus on its acoustic side only... and hey! Good idea for a title! CR: We know that due to the emergency that is happening in the world, currently you cannot tour, do you have any plans for live shows once all this happens and things continue normally? E: Yes! Indeed, the situation with Covid-19 has come interfere with our live plans. I have gathered a live band in Helsinki with whom we had had our first rehearsal before isolation measures were taken. The playlist we started rehearsing has Waves songs but also songs from older albums. As soon as the situation has come back to normal we will resume with our rehearsals and hopefully, play many concerts together. CR: Make the invitation to those who want to buy your material, have you online shop for purchase requests from several parts of the world?
E: Absolutely. We have a shop page on www.eilera.com. Items are either shipped from France, where our store is, or from Finland. You may find in the shop the Eilera CDs and links to digital stores and streaming platforms. You may also find merchandising items. And from the heart : thank you to those who support our activities financially. The income we get is re-used to pursue Eilera’s activities. CR: What is the message for those who read this special interview with you, and thank you for your time in answering our questions on Conexión Rock Radio.
E: If you like melodic, beautiful and epic music, you are welcome to visit Eilera’s pages and discover our albums. There should be an album for every taste! More pop, heavier or more acoustic. Always with a priority given to freedom in music. CR: Eilera thank you very much for your time, from now on our online radio station will give you support by spreading their music, the best for you and your bandmates, and we hope to talk again in the future to continue the interesting story that your band does on our sonic radar! E: Thank you a million. I am wishing you and your radio a long and good life and I am really happy that you are opening a way for Eilera’s song and the people of Honduras to meet and connect. This feels wonderful.. Take care of yourselves everyone and never underestimate the healing powers of music! <3 - Eilera Eilera’s albums are available from iTunes, Spotify, Bandcamp and from www.eilera.com www.facebook.com/EileraOfficial www.instagram.com/eileraofficial Special thanks to Eilera for her time in this interview.
