According to our guest on this new album, the band seeks to offer new and interesting concepts for their fans, in addition to experimenting with sounds and formulas that will result in new songs that will be considered classic in their future presentations, and which will also mark the debut of Pekka. Montin as keyboard player and vocals. In this report you will know about the current situation of the band after the suspension of activities due to the COVID-19, the details at the conceptual and production level for Thalassic, and the plans they seek to carry out once the emergency ends to return to conquer the road in a new battle on the seas ... Next, we share with you all our interview: Conexión Rock: Petri, how are you, Johonny González of Conexion Rock Radio from Honduras greets you! I send my best wishes to you, your family and bandmates who are well at home in this world confinement, and it is an honor to speak with you on this day for our readers of the next news that Ensiferum has for his fans in 2020, welcome! Petri Lindroos: Good afternoon Johonny from Helsinki, here we are all waiting with this pandemic locked up at home, but maintaining communication to reschedule our activities, and thanks for the interest to talk about the new that Ensiferum has coming son CR: I start this day's interview to congratulate the band for the release of their new album called Thalassic, which will be released in the early days of Metal Blade Records in July.
What are your expectations in this new chapter of your history as a band? PL: I tell you that the release of the new album is scheduled for July 10, although it was scheduled a day earlier by the fans, but that will be the definitive date, we also have a new member. His name is Pekka Montin, and he will be in charge of the Clean Keyboards and Vocals from now on, this album will contain many interesting elements, and we invite you to listen to the advances that we will be offering, and in the same way when it comes out in full. CR: If Two Paths was a highly acclaimed work by critics and fans, with this new work, the band seeks to excel in all aspects, especially the work that Janne Joutsenniemi has done in the studio, we know that she has worked in the past. for albums like Victory Songs and From Afar.
How does the band feel about working with him again? PL: It was actually a pretty easy choice for us to get back to working with him, we wanted to have some new sound for Ensiferum as well, and we remember the excellent work he did with the band in the past, so thinking about who would be The person in charge of the production thought of Janne, he was also available and very interested in working with us again, so it was quite an easy choice. CR: From the album cover, everything indicates that the theme will be a battle at sea between warriors and creatures. Sami (Hinkka- Bass and Voice) has commented that it bothers him to make concept albums, but in the end we have another interesting work that fans will welcome with open arms. What is the concept behind Thalassic?
PL: The name of the album is related to the water and the ocean. So we don't have a concept album, but we do have a theme album and from which the name derives along with the songs and various historical events, there is a lot of mythology involved there and all of those songs are water related in various interpretations. CR: Finland is a country with a rich culture for its traditions, poetry, history and mythology, as well as parties and drinks, of course. What is the source of inspiration for the band and making songs that are considered hymns? PL: I don't know, you know, this is the main cause that many musicians have their own way to make that inspiration become music, when I am with Markus Toivonen (Guitar, Voice and one of the founders of the band) he takes all the ideas to the rehearsal room as we all sit there and take a look at these ideas and start playing with all kinds of different arrangement ideas and styles to be able to shape the melodies that he brings, and so we shape the songs Ensiferum offers on each album. Our commitment is that all those songs sound good, nothing more. CR: This is your 8th career job and your third with Metal Blade Records.
How does it feel to be part of one of the most important labels in the world? PL: Talking about Metal Blade is talking about one of the most important labels that has been home to iconic bands for a long time. It is always good to work with professionals who really know what they are doing, and this label has a long history of very good bands and does a great job every time and this is no exception, it is very good for us and for the rest of the people who they are with them. CR: Is there any formula in the band to make high quality albums? Everyone thinks that there are no underrated works in their discography, One Man Army, the self-titled album or Iron, many consider them as classics Comments ... PL: Writing an album is never easy, it becomes more and more difficult every time you start working to create a new one, new songs that you know and you always want to move forward, we don't want to keep repeating a formula that one album after another will sound In completely the same way, we want to keep moving forward, and that also makes it a little difficult, as we still want to have the answer where people recognize our sound and like the music. It's like making a great album, and that's a very good question. I think it remains a mystery. What we do know is to write and record the correct songs, we would all be happy to do that and deliver everything to the fans once that moment arrives. CR: A worrying point is this pandemic that has affected concerts and tours, do you fear that this will affect the sales of this new album?
PL: Curiously, it is a question that has been very recurring in the interviews, and I have to say that since this emergency began everything was a disaster, you know that it is not good to release the new album. But now, after being in this quarantine lock for a couple of months, I have realized that just like the rest of the world have already listened to their music collections at home, I think it is really good that the album even comes In the midst of this mess we're in now because I feel like people need new music now, maybe more than ever before you know it. CR: Many consider at this point that digital downloads and fan pre-orders can strike a balance in this crisis, what do you think about it? PL: That is a very difficult question also because the record industry has completely changed for 10 or 15 years, unfortunately digital downloads have taken away many sales to physical albums, and that is why many record stores are experiencing a complete crisis currently. Metal Blade has its own online record store is working quite well right now, and I have nothing against digital downloads or people who buy music in those formats. If you ask me personally I like to have a physical copy in my hands and then I sit down and listen to the album, I look at the brochure with the photos, lyrics, credits and all the details involved in all that process. I enjoy it in my living room, but there are always many who prefer to download everything directly to the cell phone. CR: Many young bands look at you as an influence, what do you think about it?
PL: I can say that we are very flattered by that, you know it's nice that the music we make really inspires the younger generation to play Heavy Metal and do what they want to do and love to do. Since we know that this is not a hobby, it is our job and we are very proud, you know that it is not easy to stay alive just playing in a band, sometimes it is a complicated matter, it is a passion, and you only have to do what you want. like to do and feel. And it is a mystery that many look at us as a role model, and we like that as a band. CR: Currently the band is 25 years old with a great discography and many tours around the world.
Do you have plans for a special celebration or classic album releases? PL: For the 25th anniversary, we have thought about several ideas, about the special editions of previous albums we have not even talked about it, but thank you very much for the idea, I think it would be a matter of meeting and seeing what can be done about it, but As you know, the Coronavirus arrived and destroyed all our plans. For now we have nothing scheduled about it. CR: What experience did you leave the band when recording the EP The Live Path? Do you think you can later launch a live CD or DVD? Many would think that you are a band that is more effective in a studio than in a live show or vice versa. What do you think about this? PL: That issue has been on the table for many years now, but the point is that live DVD sales have really decreased, so you watch YouTube, for example, anything you want to see live you can find it there, already You know, a live DVD would be very good in a way, but the decision to make a project is up to the record label so it can be financed. It is worth it, so that is the most important question, despite the changes that are being experienced between the physical format and the online streaming are aspects that will have to be seen in what benefits they can leave for the bands currently. They are two sides of the same coin and it will be to see options. CR: Once the new album is released, are there any tour plans for Europe and America? PL: For now, no touring plans except for the promotion and album release. We currently have a series of activities planned that we will do live with fans on social media. Once we have everything ready we will announce all that to make the moment more enjoyable, and when the time comes to tour safely we will promise a great live experience with our songs. CR: What message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview? I also want to thank you for the time you have taken to answer our questions on Conexión Rock Radio.
PL: Thank you very much for the nice talk, Johonny, and I want to wish everyone safe in their homes, stay safe, take care of their friends and family, and we hope to see you all very soon on stage. CR: Petri thanks for your time! Best of luck to you and your bandmates with this new classic! Similarly to Metal Blade Records for putting an interesting band like Ensiferum on our sonic radar, we look forward to speaking with you again in the future! Kiitos! PL: A hug from Finland and we hope to see you soon. Our best wishes from me and the rest of Ensiferum Special thanks to Sarah Lutz of the Metal Blade Records Press and Promotion Team for their help in making this interview possible, and to Petri Lindroos for the time given in this report.
