Pero escuchar Against Widows, On Rich and Poor, My Kantele, Elegy y Relief.
We share with all of you the curiosities that involve the birth of Silver Lake as a long-term project, the concept and stories that Holopainen presents on this occasion, from his experience in the studio, and of course, we could not leave it out for the fans de Amorphis previews what will be his next installment which will be the successor to his hit album Queen Of Time. Make yourself comfortable, and enjoy a trip where we can all see very soon A Ray Of Light At The End Of The Storm. Conexión Rock Radio: Esa, greetings from Honduras, we send you our good wishes that everything goes well there with this emergency, and it is an honor to do this interview for our readers in Central and Latin America of what you are currently presenting this year with your new project , Welcome!
Esa Holopainen: Good afternoon from Finland Johonny, I know that due to time differences it is early there in your country, thank you for your interest in talking with me this time and sharing interesting news with all of you there in Latin America. CR: Thank you. That, despite being an early hour in Honduras (5.30am when we conducted the interview and in Finland 1.30pm) is part of our work. And how it has been for you as a musician to face a situation as complicated as a pandemic that has left both promoters and fans without concerts or tours. EH: During all these months that the emergency started has been a great challenge for the industry in general, nobody could imagine that we would be like this for almost two years, although in Finland things have started to improve so that bands can perform. Here we will be playing 6 shows at a festival, and I am starting to be optimistic about what is to come later, hopefully if things improve we will be back on the road soon and make up for lost time doing more concerts for the fans. CR: Inside everything bad we have a light at the end of the tunnel, and that light is represented by your first solo album called Silver Lake, which was released on May 28 through Nuclear Blast Records. What impressions have you had from fans and critics towards this solo debut?
EH: I suppose it was a surprise for many people, moreover, I have not played even for my family and friends. When the whole process was completed. Nobody expected that at that time I would record an album that had a lot of guitar orientation, and for me it is an emotional and different job at the same time, and I have been fortunate with the number of vocalists who participated in this project. I am very grateful for their time and contribution so that people will enjoy it both in CD and LP format, they are all great songs and I am happy with the final result in the mixing and mastering process since in this debut I show my musical influences, and up to this day it has generated good reactions at the beginning of my career with this project such as Silver Lake, and I am grateful for the words and the motivation that they give me to do more things in the near future. CR: This debut for those who are die-hard fans of Amorphis will find in this album interesting things, and that many consider another excellent release in this chaotic 2021. How do you feel about releasing an album in these strange circumstances? EH: Well, I think everything went naturally at the right time and circumstances. I started working on this project in March 2020 and decided to enter the studio, which by the way is close to my house, and from there I focused on ideas, despite seeing the situation that was happening around the world, I considered that this could imply an obstacle to the launch seeing the constant problems that the industry was going through well, it was best to take everything on time and in an orderly manner with the guests for this album without falling into the stress and shit that the news causes with the dead and infected . So with some patience the shows will return, and I consider that the recording was a process where the creative effort was used to the maximum, and seeing the reaction of the musicians was very positive, and although we have to wait until this is normalized. This situation has left us all with an experience that we can be better musicians when it comes to composition. CR: It is good to know that interesting point of view on how to face an atypical situation where many artists have locked themselves in the studio to release good works, and for this project it has the participation of important vocalists such as Jonas Renkse, Håkan Hemlin, Einar Solberg , Tomi Joutsen, Björn Strid, Anneke Van Giersbergen and Vesa-Matti Loiri.
Far from having one vocalist, you have several. Has it been easy or difficult for you to bring all these people together and what experiences has it left you in the process of recording Silver Lake? EH: From the moment I was starting to shape all this hangs, I need a vocalist, one that you know and that has touched you in some way. By bringing all of these guests together in the studio I let them know that I am a huge fan and that I appreciate every job they have done in their respective bands. From the moment things began to take shape with the songs, a synergy between the music was experienced from the performance aspect of each of the vocalists involved, and that generated a special connection. The truth was, everything was spontaneous, there was nothing planned at the time, the ideas began with the lyrics and music, the demos were sent to the first 3 guests and it was an unexpected result. CR: From the moment you entered the studio, did you consider all of this at a certain point as a challenge in coming up with different ideas for Silver Lake? People might think at first impression that your project is like Amorphis' younger brother for example, I don't know if you have had comments about it?
EH: Absolutely, I was looking for different things, although my bond with Amorphis and with my bandmates is special because for many years we have done things together, and I have been more involved in the production aspect, my contributions and both in lyric and music . As a team we make decisions that involve everyone, in my case with my solo project I am responsible for everything. Currently at the time of the release I am working on what will be the new Amorphis album and I am trying to make differences between my project and them. I consider Silver Lake as several projects within one, that is what will generate more interest on the part of people in wanting to know more in depth than I am currently doing. Seeing that the whole process progressed, the guests appeared one after another, I defined this new stage of my life as building a great house with many components within it and that is what Silver Lake reflects. CR: The single Storm was the first video to promote the album, highlights Håkan's majestic performance that adds a majestic atmosphere to the song and that the video was recorded in the Canary Islands and in Helsinki, contrasting the sea and the forest. a remarkable point in the edition and that literally made more than one head fly when they saw this on the networks prior to launch
EH: Yes, absolutely, when I saw the first edit of the video, I was really impressed with Owe Lingvall who was in charge of directing and Anders Tranberg as producer. They both have a long-standing friendship with Håkan, so I sent a message to everyone that we have a plan to make a video for Storm, although at first we wanted to shoot it in Sweden, but all plans changed and we decided to record it in the Canary Islands ( Spain) during winter. Seeing the locations and the shots it was incredible how they captured the angles and the aerial views and combined them with the forest they were spectacular. The work of both of them capturing the lyrics and the melody in the video was excellent and I can be honest with you, I ended up very happy with the result. CR: How did you feel about working with Nino Laurenne and Svante Forsbäck?
We know that Nino was the producer of one of Amorphis's albums, in this case Eclipse What impressions do you have of Nino's participation in the study? EH: With Nino we are very good friends and we have known each other for years, precisely since the 90's, he is a great guy, he is a person very focused on his own study which by the way is one of the largest in Finland, and During the recording of the album I felt very comfortable working with him, and he told me that the album was an incredible job, and that he has always enjoyed working with me. Nino was a great help to me because he needed someone to share my ideas with the Silver Lake album, especially with the arrangements within the recording process. He has already told me that if there is a new project ahead that he will not hesitate to work with me again. CR: Being you one of the main composers of Amorphis, which, by the way, is one of the favorite bands on this server, and that several albums have marked in many a kind of soundtrack years ago, listen to works like Elegy, Tuonela , Tales From The Thousand Lakes, and the most recent releases have made a perfect balance between the classic and the new without losing the essence of their sound. Has it been easy or difficult for you to do something new without leaving your comfort zone?
EH: When I was doing the Silver Lake album and after finishing the recording sessions I immediately focused on writing the new Amorphis album, so both 2020 and 2021 have been years of a lot of creative impulse for me and in both processes the I have been able to enjoy myself, so there was no time for breaks (laughs), for that reason when the Silver Lake album was finished I decided to compose the new Amorphis songs, this was not difficult for me, and I consider all this as an effort very fruitful. CR: We want to know if Silver Lake will have a concept arc for their debut, or will it feature songs that talk about traditional Finnish folklore and mythology.
EH: The mythology of Finland has always been present in our compositions, and that has been our source of inspiration within the Amorphis musical universe during all these years, where we continue to talk about our ancient traditions and beliefs. With Silver Lake everyone might think that this project is an extension of Amorphis. For this album we show a couple of songs that have a similar sound but have a different character in their sound. CR: A reader and listener of our online radio station here in Honduras, Gerard V. Castillo sends you a couple of questions regarding this interview, and who incidentally is a great admirer of Amorphis's work:
Hello Esa, greetings from Honduras! Amorphis is one of the few bands that thoroughly explores the mythology of their own country. Was it important to you from the beginning to tell the Kalevala epics in this musical project or was it something that happened album after album? EH: Hi Gerard, thanks for your questions. I think that with the second album we made with Amoprhis Tales from the Thousand Lakes, we have somehow taken the ideas of the influence of the Kalevala within Finnish culture, from the epics that are part of the identity of our country, culture and philosophical tradition. For that album we had a lot of folk music influences that fit our sound perfectly, just like the texts we use in Kalevala. At that point I believe that the true identity of Amorphis would be born with that work, and with Elegy we decided to mature that idea, highlighting more the folk influences and the elements that we would use in our music, and for us all that was a great beginning and that we have evolved for the better until today where we have known how to connect that art with our fans. It would be impossible for us as a band to make an album where we cannot use elements of the Kalevala. CR: A quick parenthesis Esa, you have touched my feelings as a fan of the band, and it is impossible to make a smile at the answer you have given.
For this his server Elegy was my first Amorphis album when I was studying at school, although I previously know about of the band's existence through the compiled VHS Death ... is Just the Beginning with Black Winter Day. But listen to Against Widows, On Rich and Poor, My Kantele, Elegy and Relief. That blew my mind and for many it is considered a classic work within the band's discography. EH: Oh thank you! For me this album is considered one of the most important moments of our career as musicians. In the 30 years that we have existed as a band we have seen how the musical evolution has been very favorable, and many fans look at Elegy as their favorite, and as one of the most important works of the 90's, although it is It should be noted that our turning point was for the launch of Eclipse where we presented our current Vocalist Tomi Joutsen, and I would highlight Under the Red Cloud and Queen of Time as works that already have their place within the history of Amorphis, and that all their musicians through the years left their contribution and of which we are proud because we made and shared a part of our life with the fans. CR: Skyforger in some respects sounds to me to be a concept album from the Immortal Blacksmith Ilmarinen saga whose important tracks highlight Skyforger himself, even songs like Silver Bride and majestic beast, is that right?
And if it is the case. At some point there will be an entire album dedicated to Vainamoinem apart from the song My Kantele? (new question from Gerard V. Castillo) EH: In the case of Silver Bride, it is one of the most important tracks on that album, it has a lot to do with the Ilmarinen story, one of the characters within the Kalevala universe, and who according to the story Ilmarinen was the creator of heaven, He had to mold his deceased wife in silver and was looking for perfection in every sense so that that dream could come true. That was the vision that Ilmarinen had in Silver Bride, and from my point of view I consider Skyforger as one of the best works in terms of inspiration coming from the Kalevala where we have taken many stories over the years, and we can possibly explore more of its cultural wealth. CR: How do you see the future of this project? You are obviously working with Amorphis for their new album. The question is, will there be more SL works in the future and will people be able to see and enjoy your music on stage?
EH: Absolutely, for now I'm not sure I'll do another Silver Lake album at some point, the thing is, I probably need to have some extra time to do that and besides, I'm putting time together with the new Amorphis album. If all goes well with this emergency, hopefully there will be a lot of touring and possibly a new job for Silver Lake down the road. Since as you know, if you want to organize a tour, you will have to see who would be available to travel, since each one has their main bands, and they are very active in their lives and family commitments. So it would be difficult to get all of them together for a tour, and if the opportunity were given it would be one or two dates that we would do. It will be a matter of time to see if everything is possible to be able to do concerts. CR: What do you think about doing acoustic versions of these songs? EH: I never say no to these kinds of ideas, I love them. I am very fond of acoustic music. And you always seek to bring people closer to each other with a different approach, since they present an interesting concept that you can work with. CR: What is your point of view on how the pandemic has generated a sudden change in the entire music industry around the world, and that fans are crying out to enjoy shows without fear of further contagion?
EH: I think this pandemic has been horrible for bands, promoters, labels, and fans.
