EVILDEAD
Temas como The Decending, Napoleon Complex, No Difference, A.O.P.
This is Roscoe, hey baby, and this is called The Hood” … risa frenética…

EVILDEAD
A Great Return Charged with Anarchy If you are a lover of the old school of Thrash Metal you are cordially invited to enjoy the following interview that we offer in our international interviews on Conexion Rock Radio, since a great name returns to stay, and to the joy of its fans they come with a new work that will consecrate its history, and that between the lines tell us that they are here… to stay. This time we spoke to Los Angeles with Juan García, Guitar and one of the founders of the band EVILDEAD, who welcomes us with great joy at his home, and who shares with all of you the interesting details of his new album called United $tate$ of Anarchy, which will be released on October 30 via Steamhammer, and that in the words of our guest is a work that is dedicated to his followers around the world, who waited for many years for this long-awaited return, and that definitely this work It will be one of the most anticipated releases in a convulsed 2020 that lends itself to being the perfect soundtrack of the current world situation. Evildead was formed in 1986 with a powerful Thrash Metal proposal, and they became known with their debut called Annihilation of Civilization in 1989, following with The Underworld in 1991, and a year later they released their first album Live. ... from the Depths of the Underworld and then in the mid-90's take a hiatus to dedicate himself to various projects, and then briefly resume activities from 2008-2012, and permanently from 2016 to the present. The line-up is made up of Rob Alaniz- Drums, Juan García and Albert Gonzales- Guitars, Phil Flores- Vocals, and Karlos Medina- Bass. In this interview we will talk about their return to the scene, how Covid 19 has affected their tour plans, the concept behind their new album, a retrospective on their history and projects, curiosities and the future plans that these pioneers of Thrash Metal have for their fans in A Great Return Charged with Anarchy Conexión Rock Rock Radio: Juan, how are you! I sent you my good wishes that things at home are well with your family and bandmates, and it is an honor to talk with you on this day to share with our readers what a great band is as Evildead has for its fans this year, again a joy to have you here in this special interview! Juan García: Hello Johonny, thank you for your interest in getting closer to us, here everything is fine at times with this global emergency, and here we are ready for a pleasant interview this day. CR: Start the interview today to find out how you feel as a band in the face of this pandemic that has canceled plans and concerts this year?
JG: The situation here is very complicated since the pandemic began to spread throughout the world, you know the deaths and the infected in the first months has been something very worrying. We hope that together we can overcome this pandemic and return to what matters to us such as music, also to our families, we are forced to survive these hard times, but we will come out of this situation well. It is my perception of seeing things in the middle of this confinement. CR: Let's put the bad things aside and talk about good news, we have a new Evildead album, and it's called United $tate$ of Anarchy, which will be released next October 30 via Steamhammer, by the way, third work from their discography, everything indicates that 2020 will be an important year for the band, and curiously it is strange for a band that releases an album under these circumstances.
What expectations does the band have with Anarchy? JG: We intended to put the album Rise Of Evil, but it sounded a bit generic to us, so we decided that once we got the cover illustration from our artist Edward Repka we considered United $tate$ of Anarchy to be the ideal title. for the album as it is based on one of the new songs called Without a Cause, so we felt it fit the concept we were looking for, the album is influenced by one of the actor Charlton Heston's movies that came out in 1973 called Soylent Green, and that's where we came up with the idea of adapting it in the context of the 90's. We really liked that movie at night. Imagine that kind of scenario in the future so that was the working idea and concept of the album and of course the 1992 Los Angeles riots here in Los Angeles the cover speaks for itself of what happened at that time When we saw it, it was like wow, this is almost like what we currently live in the United States, so United $tate$ of Anarchy is an ironic name but it fits the events that we live socially and politically speaking. CR: We want to know what is the concept behind United $tate$ of Anarchy
Many consider that in this album the band maintains its essence and injecting fresh and modern air into its sound. Topics like The Decending, Napoleon Complex, No Difference, A.O.P. / War Dance are some examples that you offer in this Works, and includes the version B-52 Planet Claire 2020. Everything indicates that this album is the soundtrack of the sociopolitical situation in the United States, and that it is applicable in other countries. What details can you share with us? JG: It's a collection of songs like, for example, Greenhouse could have been on our first album, we used to play that song in 1989, although it could have appeared on our first album, all those ideas were written in around 1990 by Guitarist Albert González, and Drummer Rob Alaniz, both gave good contributions to the band in those days. From that same time we rescued several songs such as War Dance or Seed of Doubt, all that is new material, so this album is a combination of old songs, old ideas that we rescued and polished with the current sound of Evildead, always keeping our ideology in our lyrics that we address politics and wars, and all that was the result of a composition process that lasted years that would become this new work. CR: In recent years, the scene saw the return of big names like Possessed, Sacred Reich, Exhorder, Vio-Lence, and now Evildead is joining the party.
How do you feel about coming back with a new album after many years? JG: We tried to come back a couple of times, you know originally we got together in 2009 we had different vocalists, we did some shows and everything was fine, but the magic just wasn't there. When Phil Flores returned to the band in 2016 we all came to an agreement that we were all on the same page in terms of ideas and we wanted to achieve a new album with him as the vocalist and the rest of the classical line-up, we were with the idea of record and tour once the pandemic is over to play with bands like Sacred Reich and Vio-Lence, and we played with them in the past. They are our favorite bands and we are all very grateful to the fans who welcome us again with open arms, for this new effort is dedicated to them. CR: It will be something to wait Juan, once the conditions improve many people will be happy to see you again on tour, and in these difficult times with this new release you will fill that space that the fans need with new music with a breath of air. cool. JG: I agree with you, and I think it will be a new sense of appreciation for live music, once this is over we have to make up for all that lost time, especially for the fans, as musicians we are desperate to play a concert However, this will be a new opportunity to create new things for them when all this is over. CR: One of the most striking things is the cover, work from the great Ed Repka.
How does it feel to be working with Ed again for this new work? JG: Ed Repka worked with us doing the covers of the first two albums: Annihilation of Civilization in 1989, and The Underworld in 1991. Both albums were released by Steamhammer. When we started the recording process for the new album, we thought of Ed and called on him to do a cover based on the movie Soylent Green. He brought his ideas, and we consider that he has done an excellent job to the point that his work is very identified and at the same time appreciated by the entire metal community around the world. We are simply happy with their work. CR: For this new album you have the renowned producer Bill Metoyer
What experiences did I leave for the band in working with Bill in the studio? JG: It was very interesting to work with Bill, we started to mold ideas since 2016, and the only special thing about this album that we had about 5 or 6 songs prepared as a demo, we presented them to him, and I think it was a good moment To enter the studio, we had many ideas, and the whole process was natural and organic, he produced the drums and the voice, and we consider that this effort was joint. Bill did a tremendous job changing the sound of the band, and it is a special reason that many bands around the world have such a great concept of him in the studio. CR: When everything was ready, did you think if releasing this album under these circumstances would be a good or bad idea? We know that the whole process in the study implies a strong economic investment, which you can share with us about it.
JG: Every situation is different, each band has their own different agendas to balance the space with Evildead. I think it was a great idea to release it this year, we have been working hard on the promotion and fighting all this time to prevent the release from being postponed one or several times. So we thought, that it was enough time to do the records, and we consider that the moment is good, it is just before the elections that reflects a chaotic situation in the world, and especially in the United States we feel that this could be a blow of fresh air and in any case we are not trying to change the world or anything like that but I think maybe we have awakened people's consciences to make them think for themselves and hopefully come to the conclusion of that we should all come together to improve our quality of life as people, and what we've done is a good bet for the fans, and as far as I'm concerned, I'm very proud of the album. CR: This is your third album in your history with Steamhammer. How does the band feel to be part of a label that is considered the birthplace of various legendary bands around the world? JG: It's good for us, it's like being home again, and it's a joy to have Steamhammer again for this release. Other labels were interested in us, but we preferred to continue with Steamhammer due to the fact that we feel comfortable with their team. Also they have the rights to the first two albums. When we met the management of the label and presented the songs they were excited, they knew what we had in our hands, and for the band that is an important factor that they value your effort in these 30 years, and that they do not put obstacles like who goes to produce, or what is the monetary expectation behind the whole process. Steamhammer seeks a perspective with the fan, who values the music, who feels the emotion. So the decision to continue with them made perfect sense. CR: Brief parenthesis Juan, in your career as a musician you have participated in a large number of projects, Masters of Metal, Agent Steel, Killing Machine, Abattoir, Obscene Gesture, Détente and Body Count to mention a few examples.
But especially with Terror, Hijos De Los Cometas is a Latin American metal classic in which you worked with Jon Deete on drums, and that these would be the bases to form Evildead some time later, you re-record some songs in a demo in 94. How do you feel seeing this long journey that you started from 1982 until now? JG: Hijos de Los Cometas was a project that we formed together with Carlos Medina and that all came after the launch of The Underworld in 1991, and Daniel Flores was also a guitarist in those days. All of that was a continuation of Evildead in the early 90's, and we wanted to explore our roots both Cuban and Mexican, we had in mind to do something different to the public. We were part of a label called Culebra (which would later be absorbed by BMG) and we shared tours with great bands like Ángeles del Infierno, Transmetal, and A.N.I.M.A.L. From Argentina, they were good experiences touring in places like Los Angeles, San José, Phoenix and several cities on the East Coast. I am proud to have belonged to that project, although many wish to see us reunited again, my energies are concentrated exclusively with Evildead, they were good years and we left an important mark on the Latin American scene. I intended to be in all these groups, you know, I am a very humble person, I am very grateful for the opportunity to play music and sometimes being in a band you know is like being in marriage, it works or not if they Band members don't leave, retire, or new band members arrive, so I never intended to be in all these different projects. I do not regret any other project I have done, I am very proud of my contributions in all those bands, it has been a journey of which I am happy to have walked this long road, now we have a new Evildead album, and in the same way working with Body Count, as you said, I have gained a lot of experience doing this, I have no regrets, and I am very proud of all the things I have done in the past. CR: I have a personal comment about your work with Body Count, years ago they covered Slayer like Raining Blood and Postmortem, I must tell you that the adaptation is fantastic, the drummer steals the show, it was a tremendous tribute to Slayer, And I thought: if Slayer were active I would dare to say that they would do a rendition of Cop Killer to return the favor.
JG: Thank you for your comment, I really appreciate your appreciation in relation to the cover we did, it had a lot of reception around the world and that's good. But we owe the credit to the producer of the album: Will Putney, he has done an excellent job in mixing and mastering, where he also appears working on the new Evildead album, besides being a great composer and collaborator he is a fantastic guitarist, He has his projects like END and Fit for an Autopsy. Will brings a lot of ideas and we are fortunate to have him working with the band. CR: The Underworld in 2021 turns 30, do you have plans to do a special live celebration or a special edition with bonus material?
JG: I think it's going to be reissued next year, and hopefully we'll include an additional track or two, that's what we've been talking about, you know, once we have to release the United States of Anarchy record on 30th of October, we're talking about reissuing The Underworld for next year, that's for sure. CR: In this album appears the track The Hood due to the presentation of a guy named Roscoe: “This is Roscoe, hey baby, and this is called The Hood”… frantic laughter…
There is an urban legend that Mike Judge was based on this song to make the characters of Beavis and Butthead, what do you think of this? JG: Are you serious about the urban legend? CR: Yes ... JG: Oh my gosh! I'm honored that our music is related to Beavis and Butt-Head, them rules! It's amazing. I never made the connection, but now that you mention it, I can see how someone would think that The Hood was a song with completely insane lyrics, it was something that didn't even make sense, you know you grew up here in Los Angeles, but we take things very Seriously and jokingly at the same time, but God, I never thought of those two in relation to the urban legend. It's quite interesting now that I see things clearly. I am completely impressed with the urban legend thing. CR: With this global emergency caused by COVID-19, many concerts and festivals were canceled, as well as delays in releases.
Being a musician and part of the band, are you aware that this emergency could affect you financially due to the possible drop in sales? JG: For now we have plans to launch a new merchandise line that we are in the process of solving that right now. In the meantime, we have new merchandise on the Bandcamp page right now, but we are also working with other merchants to license some new products, so yeah, that's one way they can support the band. We are also investigating the possibility of doing a live broadcast from Whiskey A Go Go through an internet platform, and we were thinking well with various details with both Evildead and Bodycount, so in the next few days we will be announcing news so that look at us in various parts of the world. CR: Evildead is cited by many young Thrash Metal bands around the world as an influence for their important contribution all these years, what do you think of this?
JG: What can I say? It is an honor that they see us that way. I know there is a band from Spain called Crisix that covered one of our songs, and I have heard it from other fans and I am grateful for it, it is an honor to have an influence on the younger generation in the style of thrash metal music for us. It is as I said an honor to influence younger fans to take up an instrument to do something positive with their lives in them and to explore music to make their own creations. It's something Good. CR: Once this emergency has been overcome, do you have plans to go on tours in the last months of 2020 or early 2021? Or do they look at the uncertain panorama to do concerts? JG: We are currently talking with our tour agent in Germany, and he is working to schedule as many concerts as possible, in the same way I must announce that the new album will be distributed in Brazil, so we will have a good presence in South America. For now we have to wait for things to improve, since possibly in 2021 the world scene will have many concerts due to the delays caused by the pandemic. That is one of the reasons why many bands are releasing their music this year. However, for Evildead everything indicates that activities will possibly restart sometime in 2021 or 2022, and everyone in the band is looking forward to doing tours and concerts for all the fans on various continents around the world. CR: Of something if it is certain, many people will see you in various festivals or places where you want to perform. If there is any opportunity for the band to visit Central America, they would win many fans here due to the fact that you are considered a cult band. JG: One of our objectives is to play in several Latin American countries such as Mexico and Brazil, Chile, Argentina, including your region with Honduras and other neighboring countries. It will be easier to interact with the public since we have both our Cuban and Mexican heritage, and we have several friends in various parts of the continent, and we want to play for new audiences in your region when conditions improve. CR: What message do you want to send to those who read us in this special report with you, and thank you Juan for your time in answering our questions for Conexion Rock Radio
JG: Thanks to you Johonny for the interview, and we invite all metalheads around the world to listen to the album once it comes out, to have it in its different formats, as we offer something of good quality for all of you. CR: Juan, thanks for your time! Best luck to your bandmates with this new work In the same way to our Friends at Steamhammer for making this talk possible with you, and we hope to talk about the future again and give continuity to the history of Evildead!
