FALCONER

FALCONER
Kings and Queens Honor Their Warriors In The Final Crusade A headline that goes according to what we present in this special report that Conexión Rock Radio has for you on this occasion, and without a doubt the leading band of this interview will seek to finish off a tradition that for 21 years has united fans from all over the world with albums that are consecrated, and that we will currently witness its last chapter in its history. This time we talked to Sweden with Stefan Weinerhall, one of the founders and main composers of FALCONER, where we will know the details that this Folk / Power Metal band will offer their fans this year with their new and latest album called From to Dying Ember, and which will go on sale officially on June 26 of 2020 via Metal Blade Records. Falconer was formed in 1999, and they became known with a demo in 2000, and in 2001 they would release their self-titled album. From there, a series of albums would appear throughout its history, which were received by fans and especially by critics, who have praised the musical abilities of each of its members. The band's current lineup in addition to Weinerhall on Guitar and Keyboards is complemented by Karsten Larsson- Drums, Mathias Blad- Vocals and Keyboards, Magnus Linhardt- Bass, and Jimmy Hedlund- Guitars. Next, we share with all of you this interesting interview… enjoy! Conexión Rock Radio: Stefan, greetings from Honduras! We send our best wishes to you, as well as your families and bandmates who are at home locked in with this emergency, and it is an honor to have you here in this special interview for our readers of the next news that a great band like Falconer has for your fans this year, welcome! Stefan Weinerhall: Thanks Johonny, here we have had to suspend all the activities that the band had planned for this year, so far from being with our arms crossed we have the new album ready, and we are all well at home. CR: I start this day's interview to congratulate the band on the release of their new album called From a Dying Ember, which will be released on June 26 via Metal Blade Records.
What expectations have Falconer in this new chapter of his story and break a 6-year silence? SW: Thanks for your words, let me tell you and your readers that this will be our last work as a band. CR: Wait a minute! The last one you say? It's a shame!! SW: That's right. We have been in constant activity for the last 20 years, so from now on we will seek to do something different once we close this page. On the previous question about our expectations we had discussed a couple of years ago before starting the recording process that this would be our last album, and I said to myself: this will be our best work that will have the classic elements of the sound of the band. We anticipate that a ballad and a song sung in Swedish is coming, and it will bring many folk passages throughout the tracks, and we try to deliver a high quality album to fans, no matter if it took 5 or 10 years to do it, and the band wanted to give the best in terms of composition and lyrics. We hope that fans do not look on this album as the excuse that the band has lost interest in continuing to make music, and we want this latest album to be a great farewell to everyone. CR: A quick parenthesis. knowing that with this announcement you separate, many fans will wonder if there is any reason behind it, bad chemistry between its components, or are you in looking to try new ways in music? SW: Yes. The truth is we are not doing fights and that kind of thing (laughs) We are a band that has been as a family, composing, making albums and touring for 20 years, and everyone expects the band to release new things, and we are proud of the legacy that we will leave as Falconer, and after this when we separate we will all continue to be good friends. CR: If Black Moon Rising was a highly acclaimed album by critics and fans, with this new and latest album, the band seeks to excel in all aspects, especially the production is one of the highlights.
We want to know if Andy La Rocque is the producer of this new work? SW: That's right, he has produced all our nine albums, with the previous conversation, and we tried to make the sound treatment with the instruments as audible as possible, and we wanted to capture that essence of the sound of the 80's, an example of this Iron Maiden that you listen to from start to finish the bass and the guitars. Now that the production processes are more complex in the sound, it is sometimes difficult for you to differentiate the bass and the guitar in a mix. For that reason in the studio we recorded two rhythmic guitars to generate a balance, and this turned out very well, we wanted it to sound like hard rock and metal, to achieve the final result for a new ninth album. CR: Something that has attracted attention at first sight is the cover, a Viking burial with a burning boat.
What is the concept behind From a Dying Ember? What details can you share? SW: It all started with the album title, because I knew that the band was going to die, so the ideas would come with the cover concept, and especially with the traditional Viking burial of a warrior who is consumed by fire in the sea, all that fits perfectly in the music and mainly at the end of the album where a spoken speech was heard. CR: This is your 9th work with Metal Blade Records. How does it feel to be part of one of the most important labels in the world? A whole story that you have with MB SW: We are proud to work with them, we have many years of being part of the label since the first album, and we are very fortunate that a great label like this signed a band from Sweden, and it has been an excellent career that Falconer has had until the present day. Metal Blade has people who are professionals in their area, they let us decide what we do in our processes, and that speaks to the work of the label, again we say that we are very happy to belong to their family. CR: From your point of view, how could you evaluate the evolution of the band from its first days until today?
Many consider that this last album will be one of the best in the discography of the band, what do you think of this? SW: No, we don't really try to copy or formulate the band's past, it's something versatile from doing a piano ballad to composing a metal song. In our history we have reinvented ourselves, looking for elements that can be incorporated into music, having the best work team and the best producer, all that implies in making our albums the best one as opposed to the other. CR: With this worldwide emergency caused by COVID-19, many concerts and festivals were canceled, as well as release delays. Being a musician and part of the band, are you aware that this emergency may affect you economically due to the possible drop in sales? SW: Yes. We were preparing everything for the tour and with an album on the door everything was canceled, in the case of other bands we know that their members live entirely on music, and we know that it is a very difficult situation for them. Logically it affects us all, but we were lucky to record everything before this pandemic broke out. CR: In this emergency, preorders and official digital purchases by fans help bands create a balance in this situation. What do you think about it SW: I am not very aware of what is done now on a commercial or business level. I think that digital downloads are now the fastest way to get music, although from the point of payment it´s not a positive thing. CR: Everyone thinks that there are no underrated albums in their discography, Chapters from a Vale Forlorn, Northwind or The Scepter of Deception are some works that for many are considered classic.
Is there any formula in the band to make high quality albums? Comments ... SW: No, actually we only make music, as it´s natural, so we have no plan to try to do or redo past things. Here what lies is the complexity of making the lyrics and the songs and making them fit into what you intend to compose in your own vision. We have had many differences regarding the evolution of the band, I think in Northwind and Grime vs. Grandeur we had changes of singers, and adapting to what we had was a challenge that over time was overcome. CR: The band's first album released in 2001 will be 20 years old, just like Armod will be 10 years old.
As you know, many bands do special concerts playing various classic albums on their tours. In Falconer's case, are you planning to revisit these two live albums or are you planning to release special editions with extra content? SW: Many have asked us to do something like this live, but at this point we consider responding with a no. We think it could really be a good idea anyway, but from a composer's point of view I wouldn't see myself making a live album in its entirety, so we have some live recordings that we intend to include as bonus tracks or something like that, Maybe making a compilation album, but I mean that really depends on the label if such an idea can work, although making a compilation album and adding live content could work if there is a demand by fans for this material is very possible. CR: Many young bands see an influence in Falconer, what do you think about it?
SW: It is a bit strange because I see myself as a beginner, not as the professional (laughs), I only see myself in the garage band of a small town in Sweden and with the passage of time you consecrate yourself in a band and suddenly you look at some people making versions of our songs. It really feels strange because you are very close to them, and that they express to you that something marks their life based on what you do is big enough for Falconer to have that kind of followers and it is something strange but rewarding at the same time. CR: Once Ember is released, do you have tour plans for Europe and America? SW: Well, I would like to tell you and the fans that we were planning to do our final show in 2015 at the Prog Power Fest in the United States. But seeing the current circumstances there is nothing officially scheduled or announced. CR: What message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview? I want to thank you for the time you have taken to answer each of our questions on Conexión Rock Radio.
SW: Thank you Johonny for your interest and for your words towards the end of our career, in the same way to the people in various parts of the world who follow us: thank you very much to the fans for the love and support that I have received many Emails that we have received in Spanish and Portuguese, and we hope that this latest work that Falconer will launch very soon will be to your liking. CR: Thanks Stefan for your time! Best of luck to you and your bandmates with this latest album that will stop Falconer's legacy! In the same way we thank as always Metal Blade Records for granting us the opportunity to talk with you, and we look forward to hearing from you on new adventures in the near future! SW: Thank you very much! We will see how these new projects may sound, once we close the page later, although the truth is I have no idea (laughs) he sent everyone a greeting from Sweden, especially those who follow and your work on your radio. Special thanks to the Metal Blade Records Promotion and Press Team: Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey for their help in making this interview possible, and to Stefan Weinerhall for their time in producing this special report.
