FRACTAL UNIVERSE

FRACTAL UNIVERSE
The Impassable Horizon of Humanity Conexion Rock Radio in its international interviews offers all of you, and especially lovers of Progressive and Technical Death Metal, a very special talk with a band that in recent years has generated worldwide attention towards its interesting sonic proposal, and that in this 2021 they return through the big door with a new album in their hands. In this opportunity we established our contact to France to talk with Vince Wilquin, Guitar and Voice of the band Fractal Universe, who provides details of his new discographic production called The Impassable Horizon, which will be released on June 25 through Metal Blade Records, and that will mark an interesting point in his career as far as musical evolution is concerned. The current line-up is conformed by Hugo Florimond- Guitars, Valentin Pelletier- Bass, Vince Wilquin- Vocals and Guitars, and Clément Denys- Drums. In this interview we address interesting points such as the pandemic and the cancellation of tours, the production and the concept offered by the band in this new album, the evolution and changes that have forced bands and the music industry to implement strategies in this pandemic. , and of the future plans that these talented French people have in mind, offering their fans a breath of fresh air and the challenge that the world seeks to overcome in an Impassable Horizon for Humanity. Conexión Rock Radio: Vince, Greetings from Honduras, Central America! We send from here our good wishes to you, your family and your bandmates that are well and safe with this emergency, and it´s an honor in talk with you, and share with our readers about the upcoming news that a great band like Fractal Universe have for their fans in this year, welcome! Vince Wilquin: Hi Johonny, thanks for the kind words and thanks for having me! The pleasure's all mine! CR: Start the interview of this day in congratulating the band for their recent album called he Impassable Horizon that will be released for June 25 via Metal Blade Records. By the way, album number three in their history.
Everything indicates that 2021 will be an important year in the history of the band. What are your expectations in this new page for Fractal? VW: We feel like this is the band's most accomplished and diverse record to date, and we hope it will enable us to reach a lot of new fans! The first feedbacks on the record are extremely positive and we're very excited to unleash it now! 2020 was a rough year for live music, but with the world slowly healing, we of course hope to be able to hit the stage again as soon as possible! CR: Since 2020, the world has been in confinement due to the Covid 19 pandemic that has caused everything to literally come to a standstill. No tours ... no live shows How do you feel as a band to release an album in these strange circumstances? VW: Indeed! But despite the pandemic, the band managed to stay quite productive: we recorded our new record, we started writing some new material, and we've also been very active on Twitch, which was a great way to remain connected with our fans! As we were not in a hurry with any deadline, we were also able to take our time with the production of this record and all of the related video content, to prepare the release as solidly as possible. Now, the situation is slowly getting better, and we will even be able to perform some shows in France for the album release, so it almost feels like it's back to normal for us! CR: For many this new album will be considered as the most technical and the most mature in their discography, it shows that you have refined the progressive element in an excellent way. Tracks like Autopoiesis, A Clockwork Expectation and Black Sails of Melancholia (the Sax part in both tracks is a pleasant surprise! Also excellent video), Symmetrical Masquerade, Withering Snowdrops and Godless Machinists are examples that there is something very good on hands... Prog jazz metal at its best
What is the concept that the band offers in Horizon? VW: The aim was to write a diverse and really dynamic record, both in terms of instruments, with the use of saxophone for example, and vocals. You mentioned the record being 'technical', but to us, technique is always only a set of tools that you have to express musical ideas, so it is never a criteria for us! The aim is always to accurately translate the music we have in mind, and to write good songs! In terms of lyrics, 'The Impassable Horizon' is a concept record that is based on Heidegger's idea of 'preparedness-for-death', basically how we human beings deal with our own mortality and how it affects the way we conceive life, and thus how we manage to give it meaning despite that unavoidable perspective ahead of us! CR: The title of the album is very curious ... Does Fractal speak of something impassable if the Covid continues to affect the world and the music industry?
VW: Not really, haha, but that's actually a pretty interesting analogy, as it will be extremely hard to anticipate how the world's current situation will evolve! In fact, the album title is closely linked to the lyrical concept: that 'impassable horizon' is simply death, a place that will always be ahead of us, and from which we will never be able to come back! CR: In 2020 the band releases Rhizomes Live.
What impressions do people have of this album? We want to know if all this material was recorded on tour before the pandemic started? What details can you share with us? VW: The whole live album was recorded during 'The Impassable Horizon' release party on April 19th 2019, in our favorite local venue, Le Gueulard Plus, in Nilvange, France. During that show we played, filmed and recorded the whole album in its entirety. The full video is available on our Youtube channel! Since it turned out really well, and since we had a EU tour with Obscura approaching, we decided to also upload it to streaming platforms, to give people and insight of what to expect from the band live! People's reactions have been very positive about it, and that's important to us as live shows are one of our main points of focus! CR: This is your second work with Metal Blade Records
How do you feel about in being part of one of the most important labels in the world? VW: It's truly an honor for us to be part of this big family. The guys at Metal Blade are doing an amazing job and you can really feel that they're first and foremost passionate about Metal music! They put their trust in us at a still very early stage of the band and we're very grateful for that! CR: Eight years of career, 3 studio albums ... it's a whole story that far from ending it seeks to continue with good music!
Are you satisfied with everything achieved to this day? Are you looking to experience new sounds in the universe of Fractal Universe? VW: I'm totally satisfied with what we have achieved so far: since the beginning of our live activities in 2015, this fist EP and 2 albums have brought us to play all over Europe, sharing the stage with some of our favorite artists and playing some of the biggest festivals! We've connected with many new fans all over the world! Although we've evolved as musicians, I'm still very happy with everything we've released and can look back fondly on these! Now, we still have a lot to tell and explore, and I'm sure the future of the band will be exiting! CR: Currently, the pandemic has forced bands and the industry to reinvent themselves.
In your case, do you have any plan or strategy to stay afloat monetarily? Or do you have jobs that somewhat lessen an investment impact? VW: Luckily, we aren't relying on the band for making a living yet! All of the band members do work in the music field though, and the band has helped a lot here: all of us are teaching our respective instruments, some of us are band coaches (helping new bands to find their workflow). And our drummer Clément also has his professional recording studio, Boundless Productions Studio), where he does session works and records other bands! Fortunately, we were able to pursue most of these activities throughout the pandemic! CR: The band has contemplated soon like part of the promotion of the new album to present it in some concert in streaming? Or you are of the criterion that the best thing is to wait until everything is normalized and to play in a concert in person ... comments ...
VW: Yes, we will do a streaming show very soon, where 'The impassable Horizon' will be performed in its entirety! We'll also remain active on Twitch! But as I mentioned, we'll even be playing some real live shows in France! That still feels unreal to us, and we couldn't be more exited! Overall, I hope that streaming shows will continue after the pandemic! I don't see it as a replacement for live shows, but more as something else. It's a different experience, something that, to me, can definitely coexist with touring, and unlike live shows, is accessible to people from all over the world! CR: During this time of confinement many people have been left without jobs and with little money, digital platforms at a certain point helped the bands while people resumed their jobs and so they could buy CDS and Vinyl.
Piracy in recent months had a lot of demand that unfortunately for those who cannot buy material this is their "cheapest option" what do you think of this situation that has affected bands and labels VW: I think piracy is simply and unavoidable consequence of our internet society, even long before COVID, and that the music industry just has to adapt around it! Social media presence and live shows definitely are growing to be the most important aspects, and with the latter being gone since the pandemic, that doesn't leave many options for the music industry! But I think that the fact that people from all over the world can access to basically all the music of the world for free is an amazing thing! Especially, as you said it, in these rough times, where art is really one of the most important things worth living for! Just remember, if you can afford it, make sure to support your favorite artists, because they need it! And if you can't afford it, that's totally fine, just don't forget to share the word around as much as you can! CR: Once this emergency is over, do you have plans for tours in Europe, the US or Latin America in 2022, or are you waiting to reschedule pending dates?
VW: I wish I could give you some precise news, but for now, I can't give any promises! As I said, France will be the first in line, as it's the easiest and safest for us at the moment! But we'll do our best to hit the road again as soon as possible, that's just not up to us at this point! CR: Vince, what message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview?
I want to thank you for the time in make this special report in Conexión Rock Radio VW: Thank you very much for reading this, make sure to check out our new record! Greetings to all our current and new fans from Honduras, I hope we'll be able to make it there one day! Keep supporting music and art, and stay safe! CR: Vince, thank you for your time! The best of luck to you and your bandmates with this new album! In same way to our Friends of Metal Blade for putting an interesting band like this in our sonic radar, we look forward to speaking with you again in the future! Have you a perfect day there in home! And take care! VW: Thanks Johonny and a hug to your readers in Honduras and the rest of Latin America, we hope to see you soon at a concert! Special thanks to Sarah Lutz of Metal Blade Records Press and Promotion for her help in this interview, and to Vince Wilquin for the time allotted.
