GGGOLDDD

GGGOLDDD
A Proposal of Magic and Strength We present a new and interesting international interview on Conexión Rock Radio where we dedicate a space to those girls who seek to stand out on the world map with their work, which will attract the attention of locals and strangers, and from there many will seek to know about its beginnings and its present. This is the case of the band originally from the Netherlands called GGGOLDDD, who on April 1 released their new album called This Shame Should Not Be Mine through Artoffact Records, and for those who follow the band, look at this new effort as the most mature, personal, and intimate in his already growing discography. In this opportunity we talk with their Vocalist Milena Eva, in the same way with her partner Thomas Sciarone who share the moment that the band is currently experiencing both in promotion and reception, and especially we address the context that GGGOLDDD presents in this new work and how Eva has known how to face unpleasant things that she experienced in the past, so that catharsis was transformed into 10 tracks where the instruments and the electronic sound generated a balance so that This Shame Should Not Be is a testimony and life experience for many girls who have lived similar experiences, and that Eva and her bandmates are spokespersons and agents of change in violent times. Conexión Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Eva and Thomas, thank you for the time you give us back home, and as always it is an honor to make this report with our readers in Central America and the rest of the world to share upcoming news and future plans that GGGOLDD has this year, welcome! Milena Eva: Hello Johonny, thanks for the interest in the band. Thomas Sciarone: Thank you for your interest, by the way, the first time we have had an interview from someone from Honduras, it is a joy for us. CR: I start my interview to find out how you have felt about going back to do concerts there in the Netherlands, or are certain restrictions maintained for everyone's safety?
Eva: It was a hard time for us since all this problem started at the beginning of 2020 without having activity and being sheltered at home while things returned to normal, at least we can do things again. Thomas: As Eva said, we did not have enough dates since the pandemic started, and at the beginning of this year it seemed that the situation would continue the same, although currently the restrictions are gradually being lifted, which is good for us, and with the launch of the new album we have several shows in April so it looks like then all the places to do concerts will be open like they used to be before the pandemic so that's really good news or something is happening around here since then we've had the opportunity to see some friends from other bands play, and seeing people happy is a very intense feeling. CR: Let's talk about the new work that you are currently presenting, last April 1st you released This Shame Should Not Be Mine through Artoffact Records. What reactions have you had from critics and fans from the moment you presented the first singles as well the physical and digital work?
Eva: We are very grateful to all the people who have supported us now and who have followed us during these years, talking about this new album was a challenge due to the situation of confinement in which we all lived, but on the other hand that gave us enough time of advantage to compose new ideas, and this process in particular for me was a severe test. I considered from the moment I was shaping the songs if this really should be recorded, since I suffered a trauma that took years to overcome (context for those who don't know about the situation that Eva talks about in the question: At 19 years Milena was raped; the trauma of this event kept her silent for many years, for that reason this album was a perfect opportunity for her to deal with that problem from the past) so the best thing was to write songs that spoke of incredible opportunities , and it would be through them the perfect way to express my feelings. The whole album talks about precisely this, and it's really about sexual assault and it wasn't a very happy time in my life, other people also went through the same thing that I've had to face, and I think it's important to talk about it, just you break the taboo and understand what the album is about. CR: Eva, the truth is that what you have done with the band is something to admire, and one thing is for sure, you will gain the respect of locals and strangers with this album. Speaking of it, the cover where you appear dressed in armor will attract attention, as you mentioned before, all this was the reflection of a bad experience, but people will seek to find out if there is a hidden message on the cover or it can be subject to various interpretations of saying “I wear this armor to protect myself from harm around me”
Eva: You are correct, that is really the message. I mean there are a lot of details related to the album cover. I think the idea was to take a picture of myself that way and fight with the trauma and everything that has happened to me, but I also want to show that you can make a wall to protect yourself, and that no one can threaten you or even touch you. CR: The band has enjoyed continuous activity in recent years especially with
Why Aren't You Laughing in 2019, and as a consequence they would release The Isolation Sessions, The Bedroom Sessions and The Archive Sessions, all of which would appear between May and July 2020. In the case of this new album, how did you experience an atypical situation of not having tours or concerts in the last 2 years? Thomas: It has been a difficult process for all of us, we had the ideas of what the album would be for 2019, but the pandemic took us all by surprise, we were returning from the United Kingdom after a tour in several cities and they declared the emergency, with it the closure of borders and confinement in our homes. All our plans to participate in the summer festivals in that year failed, although we had relative losses we consider ourselves lucky as other bands invested heavily to be able to organize their tours against the current and that was a great loss for them. Far from feeling discouraged, we released several records in mid-2020, closing the promotion cycle for Why Aren't You Laughing? We live in a shitty situation, but thank God we have music and we were able to create something in the middle of the pandemic, Eva I think that talking about the trauma she suffered would be the ideal thing for this album, they were mixed, ugly and strange sensations that were present in the process, and all of that led to the release of this album. CR: Currently for this new Eva album is there a new line-up for GGGOLDDD, or are the musicians the same ones that have participated in previous works?
Eva: For this album we did it with a different line-up, we decided to try new things and in the end everything went very well as expected. Thomas: We considered looking for new musicians before the pandemic broke out, although all that caused changes in the songwriting process, we talked to them about the plans we had to tour, but they saw that it was not profitable, maybe at that time but not like now that everything is being reactivated, since then we have worked hard in the studio and they are more than ready to tour with us and the contribution that each of them left on the album was quite good. CR: About the process that everyone has lived in this confinement, we know that the confinement was a factor so that the band could not meet in one place and rehearse, what experiences have you had for the recording process of this album? Was it easy or difficult to do everything at home without being able to see each other for so long? Thomas: Everything was different as the band was used to getting together several days a week, rehearsing, and playing music together. For more than 10 years that I have been composing for the first time, we experienced working apart during the months of confinement in our homes due to the pandemic. I think the positive of all this was to take advantage of the time and come up with ideas for several songs and to be able to shape the message that Eva wanted to express in them, for that reason for this album we seek to experience different things and instruments in the sound of the band, adapting electronic tickets. And then we recorded the album in the UK at Oregon Studios and it was worth waiting a year despite being stuck at home to be able to travel and complete everything there where we could be calm and connected with nature, because at home we had enough rest. and it was time to work (laughs) CR: Here are very interesting tracks like Strawberry Super, Invisible, Notes on How to Trust and Beat by Beat. People are looking forward to enjoying their live concerts presenting this album, and those who will meet them for the first time will be a sound discovery.
How do you feel about conquering new audiences around the world with your proposal? Thomas: It's very interesting now that you ask that. People will like the album because of its new and fresh sound, so I think that makes us a little bit more accessible to a lot of people and especially when we're playing on tour. Eva: I think that by listening to the album many people will understand how open I've been with the lyrics regarding what I've experienced long ago. Thomas: With Eva we have been working on this project for more than ten years and we have felt that with each step we have taken we believe that we are reaching much further and that we are allowed to reach several continents not only Europe, but also the United States and Latin America, and especially places where we are going to play for the first time. I think this journey that we are living is incredible, and all of that is possible thanks to this new album. CR: We know that the album has a special edition with extra material, what details can you share with us for those who want to collect the normal and Deluxe editions in the GGGOLDDD sonic universe?
Thomas: That's right, we presented the album previously at the Roadburn Redux, and it was recorded in full in April 2021. Only 9 of the 10 songs that originally appear on the studio album appear. I'll tell you that the entire event was streamed and many people watched the concert, many messages arrived asking if we were going to make an edition with this material that we presented there, so to please the fans we decided to release our participation in Redux as extra material. CR: For This Shame Should Not Be Mine they once again have the work of Jaime Gómez Arellano as producer, many believe that Jaime detected a winning formula in the band that has served a lot in the evolution of their sound, what do you think of this?
Eva: The experience of working with Jaime is always gratifying for us since he has given a very respectable space to our music and takes things to another level in some way since at the point of finishing the process with the due corrections we always he leaves very impressed with how he makes improvements to our sound, and we look forward to maintaining that working relationship with him for future releases. CR: With Artofact Records this is your second release. What impressions do you have of this working relationship with this label that has supported you in recent years? Thomas: We are very happy to work with them. Artofact is well known for having a diversity of artists in its catalog not only in the electronic field, but also in metal and other genres. We believe that we fit perfectly with the label and their executives have confidence in the artists with their releases, and that is very good because of the attention that their staff generates so that all things go very well within their work program. CR: How do you feel about going through this journey that you have made from Interbellum that was released in 2012 to this new album in 2022?
Eva: We, like any other band, start their history from a zero point, since we recorded Interbellum we knew which direction we were going to take. From then on we took more care of each album we released over the years and tried to find different things in our sound to express our feelings both in lyrics and music. And we don't settle for staying at one point, we always try to find a way to make our albums sound different, but keeping our identity intact, especially in each song we write, and we try to write other things that are pleasant for us and the fans. So we try as always in the process of a new album to look for new ways of songwriting and for that reason what we do with our music is literally gold. CR: With everything that has happened in these two years, various places are lifting restrictions, but people's fear of re-infection is still latent in several countries outside of Europe and the United States. What do you think of this? Thomas: In the general context of things we have understood that. The problems for everyone have been difficult since the pandemic began at the beginning of 2020, and despite having vaccines and people regaining their confidence to go out without fear of anything, there are still people who are vulnerable to this and who may not be prepared to face things once they leave their houses. Although most are happy about the changes that have taken place in recent months, although it can be dangerous to even go to concerts and get sick, we are aware of it, but this is everyone's concern and concern so that things go well. on tour or at a show. We are ready to take that next step and we hope that people contribute theirs too. CR: Already with the album in the streets and with the first presentations that the band is doing, do you have plans to give more promotion to the album as more dates appear?
Eva: Since we released the album we have sought to recover all the time lost in these two years, despite the restrictions we already have several dates in the remainder of 2022 in various European countries, and if the Covid does not prevent our passage we would close the tour in mid-December in France to think about our next moves for 2023, and we hope to enjoy with the fans these concerts that are already officially scheduled. Thomas: As Eva said it will be exciting to see people again and enjoy the set we have prepared for the occasion. CR: Speaking of Sets Thomas, I don't know if the fans or you have contemplated in the future being able to release an acoustic section of your songs? Thomas: It would be interesting to be able to do new perspectives in that format, since we have to experience electronic sounds with acoustic ones in our songs. If in electric format the guitar expresses strength it will be striking when we adapt our sound to a different environment, if everything went well there could be some project in the future. It's a matter of work and see the results. CR: At the end of this interview friends, what message do you want to send to the people who have enjoyed this conversation, and thank you both for the time you have given us to do this report from the Netherlands
Eva: Thanks to you, Johonny, for having us, the only thing I can say to people is thank you for supporting us, and to those people who have gone through traumas or complicated times in their lives, we say that they are not alone. We hope that they have the confidence and courage to be able to tell their problems to their friends or family so that they can feel better, and for that reason this album is dedicated to them so that they can find the strength, comfort and courage with which they can feel identified with situations that are not pleasant in order to move forward in their lives. Special thanks to Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey of the Looters Press and Promotion Team for their help, and to Eva and Thomas for their time on this interview.
