GOODNIGHT SUNRISE

GOODNIGHT SUNRISE
A Winning Bet Against All Odds Conexion Rock Radio in the celebration of its 13th anniversary brings you a proposal that has been on the map for many years, but for our region and other continents around the world it can be considered something new in sonic radar. From Ontario, Canada we present Goodnight Sunrise, a band that has been active on the local scene in this country for several years, and that in 2022 they present us with their third record production called Against All Odds, which was released on the 7th of October via Rejection Records, and that critics and fans of the band regard this new effort as the most creative of their career. We talk this time with one of its founders, guitarist David Kochberg, who shares the impressions experienced during the recording process and the pros and cons that the band has faced since the start of the pandemic that affected the world at the beginning of 2020, and that now with the controlled emergency in several places, many artists already have the opportunity to present their material to an audience that since confinement has clamored to enjoy concerts without fear of getting sick again. Goodnight Sunrise is currently made up of David Kochberg - Guitar and Vocals, and that with Vanessa Vakharia - Keyboards and Vocals they have traveled an adventure full of music and have become part of the soundtrack of locals and strangers in the different places. that have occurred in recent years. We invite you to download your Spotify playlist dedicated to the band featured in this report, learn more about its history, and witness how a band has won against a bet that for other artists would be a challenge against all odds. Conexión Rock Radio: How has it been for you to appear again at festivals and play in various places after these two and a half years after this forced break in 2020?
David Kochberg: As a band it has been a great relief, despite being locked up for many months the recording process was fun, for that reason we focused on working during all that time in the studio, and it will be very exciting to present the new material to people. CR: Let's talk about Against All Odds, the third album in their discography and that will be released in October 2022 through Rejection Records, by the way, congratulations, here the band has managed to inject energy and new air into their sound
Do you have expectations with this release or do you expect to see what reactions people have to this new material? DK: That's an interesting question, I've always tried for many years not to have expectations, because you might think that people would love that, that this would be a success, but sometimes things don't go as expected and so In general, you can easily be disappointed by a reaction that can be negative for you, for that reason I do not look for expectations when thinking about releasing an album, we just wait to see what happens, but obviously we want people to like the material. CR: With this new album you break a six-year silence since 2016's Falling Awake. How do you feel about coming back with an album after such a long time?
DK: It is true that we were very excited to come back, for that reason we wanted to make another full-length after a long time of not having anything new, although the points against a process is that it requires a lot of work and on the other a huge investment of time and money, so after we released our second album for the next few years we would sporadically release one or two singles at a time, and experiment with different sounds, so it's easier to do if you're only doing one or two songs at a time, so from 2016 to 2019 between promoting and releasing singles we decided to go into the studio already, and we decided to focus more on rock, so this album has a heavier sound than our previous works, and we are very excited to already have a new album because I know that many people would like to listen to singles these days, but I think that there are still people who like to dive into an album. m complete, so it's exciting for us to have a big project and finally get it rolling around the world. CR: Currently the restrictions have been relaxed and consequently the festivals and concerts have been progressively reactivated. As a musician, do you consider that this pandemic, two and a half years after it hit the world, has been overcome? DK: I think that all of us who have been working directly or indirectly within the music industry have had very difficult times in the last two and a half years, and this could affect any country, even Honduras where Johnny is living, but in Canada things have changed and are allowing the concerts to return, precisely this summer they have started everything while maintaining protocols, and many bands in recent months have had their music saved to be able to release new material at the right time, so it is very good, but there are also a lot of challenges because firstly everyone is getting back into touring and concerts so it's hard to stand out from the crowd as they have to be creative in promoting their music, and then the demand for bands to appear at festivals, that's very exciting for us musicians to go back to work and play again, but it's also a little confusing because we spent two and a half years without being able to do cu anything, now and all of a sudden we become extremely busy, it's also a challenge to find a way to maintain that balance all the time. I'd rather have that challenge than have nothing to do. CR: During this time of lockdown, did this somehow affect you helplessly at home, or did you patiently wait for the right time to come back with something new for the fans?
How has the pandemic influenced the writing process for the new album? DK: We could say that we are very lucky to have completed the album in parts during the period of confinement, we were able to enter the studio and take advantage of the hours that were available to be able to advance in doing some recording and then wait when they reopen their doors and pick up where we left off before, that's how the process of working for the last two years was, and we were also very lucky to receive a grant from the government of Canada that gave us a little bit of money to support the musicians, and that gave us It served to record the album and do a bit of promotion, we have been very lucky but at the same time we were very productive in being able to write and compose several songs for this new album in a timely manner, and that helped us stay busy and not fall in depression and madness. CR: The name of the album reflects, on the one hand, the challenge of making a perfect album, and on the other, that this could be the point of musical maturity that Goodnight Sunrise has in its history, by the way, Brian Moncarz as a producer has done an excellent job with the sound of the album without leaving out Brian Lucey who was in charge of the mastering
DK: Thanks for the comment! We consider that the production played an important role in all this, as you mentioned and we agree that Brian has done an outstanding job on this album as a producer, and he was in charge of the mastering with Lucey as an assistant in the final part of the process. The experience of working with him was great, since he has helped us to obtain the sound we were looking for in experiencing guitar, bass and drum tones. He has worked with another very important band from Canada called Our Lady Peace, many consider it legendary in our scene, and on his recommendation he gave us the suggestion to look for session musicians to complete the lineup and to work in the studio, in this case would be a bass player and drummer respectively, since Brian wanted to build a very strong sound to be able to exploit it in the best possible terms. Since we are only two components in the band, we have had a learning process where we could develop ourselves as composers in these 11 years of existence of the band, we learned tricks to write the songs and we also improved our technique when playing, and we consider that we have matured very well during all this time. Luckily half of the songs were done before the pandemic hit, and the rest were completed in lockdown, so there's an interesting mix in what we offer people with this new album, there will be songs that are very accessible to the people, and I think that with everything that has happened since 2020, all this has influenced this new change in our sound to be very positive, and at the same time significant already at the level of musical proposal. CR: For that reason and to surprise people with this change, you decided to release these advances on the Timesick EP, right?
DK: We decided to release this material as a preview to the release of the album weeks ago, although the truth was that we had not contemplated making this move, but seeing that we had things to promote we took the idea of releasing an EP with several songs and surprises for people, like this that we had several songs as demos and we decided to choose a song at random and we sent the recording to Brian, in the end it turned out to be one of our favorite songs whose lyrics speak of memory, nostalgia and reflection, all of this fit perfectly with the situation of the pandemic , causing many people to remember the past while everyone is inside their homes. CR: People may think that the relationship between the band and the producer will determine the success for future releases in the future, seeing the good response they have had with the singles and the album, would you work with Brian for future projects in the future?
DK: We think so. In fact, last summer we were working with him again to polish some ideas for what could be a new album, in this recent process we had a great time as he is a brilliant producer and audio technician. He is very good at doing his job that makes things sound great both in instruments, production, and coming up with ideas in the arrangements. Our friendship with Brian was practically instantaneous from the moment we started working with him in the middle of the pandemic, since we were the only people who had the most contact both in confinement and when we met in the studio. Having Brian on our side was a huge influence in shaping our sound, and being able to experiment with new things for the future. CR: Those who know the band for the first time, how did the idea of forming Goodnight Sunrise come about, did you previously play in other bands or was this new project born from scratch?
DK: Our story began when previously Vanessa and I played in a previous band, for both of us it was our first real experience in being part of a collective of musicians, I was a drummer and she joined as a singer, at that point we were new to the world of the music. We played for about a year and we were able to learn to manage a band, to be able to schedule shows and in the same way to start composing our own songs, since in addition to playing the drums I played the guitar, that way when we finished our participation with that band I suggested to Vanessa that we should unite to form a new band, since we both had many ideas to be able to make a creative force together and to be able to present a new and stable proposal. That way Midnight Sunrise would start from scratch and with a lot of work the opportunity to record our first album would come, and through the years we have had collaborations of bassists and drummers, and here we are, 11 years later we are still writing our history in this band, and we are proud of everything we have done since then. CR: Now that you mention that detail David, being you a two-piece band, do you currently have a stable line-up to work both in the studio and on tour? Or is having hired musicians a better option for Goodnight Sunrise? DK: Maybe that option can be given, for now we only have people we hire to support us on tours, since in this case I'm in charge of playing the guitar and Vanessa the keyboards and vocals. Usually the formation is made up of five musicians, which we complement with another guitarist, bassist and drummer. We could consider leaving the door open for later so that other people can work with us permanently, it is a real possibility. The people who work with us must know that being in a band is like being in a marriage, one must look for the right person, for now the band has two members, but we do not leave closed the possibility that they will join later more people and that this transition can be permanent. CR: 11 years of activity, several tours and many people around the world who have been able to enjoy your music, how do you feel about being part of this journey that you and Vanessa have made over all these years and seeing how Midnight has evolved in his sound?
DK: Look Johonny, it's very interesting to remember everything we've done a long time ago, for us this has been a long road that we've come, so imagine, I haven't listened to the first album in a long time, but doing it makes you feel proud of what you did in those years, listening to how it sounded, the way you sing, remembering our first steps in the studio. Since then we have matured musically to seek better sounds for our proposal and you have the feeling that when you listen to those songs you realize that it is a new band that seeks to be known and reach as many people as possible. During all these years our effort has borne fruit, an example of this is this Against All Odds that I consider from my point of view as the best we've done so far. CR: Now that the album is already available in physical stores and digital platforms, what is the next move for Midnight? Tours or promotion? DK: We will start our tour in a few weeks and we will play in Ontario, our hometown, from there we have a concert schedule for the month of November, for now we do not plan to tour outside of Canada, it will be a matter of time to work with agents in other countries and also be able to play at festivals. We have received interesting comments about making inroads in Latin America, since it is a region like Europe that consumes a lot of rock, and with this new album we intend to reach places that we have never visited, to be able to play for new audiences and make new fans. Previously we performed in Estonia and we had the opportunity to play at NAMM in California, and it was a fun experience to share the stage and time with other bands, so it was our first trips since the Covid restrictions were lowered, they were great moments that we live, and we hope to be able to knock on the door of other countries in the future to learn about their people, culture and share our music with them. CR: David, at the end of this interview, what message do you want to send to the people who have enjoyed this conversation, and I want to thank you for the time granted there from your home in Ontario.
DK: First of all thanks to you Johonny for inviting me to this conversation, also very kind of you to organize the questions and spend your time listening to our discography, and we are grateful to all the people who have supported us so far and who have created In us. We hope that the new album is to your liking, and we hope to be able to play in several countries, to be able to talk face to face and to thank you in a personal way for this great moment in which we live, take care of yourselves and we send you a hug from Ontario for all the world. Special thanks to Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey at Looters for their help in making this interview possible and to David Kochberg for his time in this conversation.
