GUILLOTINE A.D.
CR: Al escuchar el álbum encontramos grandes momentos como Hammer, Vultures of Paradise, Spiritual Insect, Born to Fall y Madness of the Gods.
GUILLOTINE A.D.
Exile Outside of Paradise Death Metal is present in our international interviews on Conexión Rock Radio, and for those who like the genre we recommend this interesting proposal that has new things in its hands. This time we communicated to the United States, precisely in Atlanta, Georgia, where we spoke with Adam Miller, Bassist and Vocals of the band Guillotine A.D., who present their new record material, the second in their career called Born To Fall, in which he saw the light in June of this year through the M-Theory Audio label, and these musicians are currently touring various cities after two years of absence caused by the pandemic that hit the world in 2020. Guillotine A.D. formed in 2016 although they were previously known as Guillotine, and the lineup, in addition to Adam, is complemented by Lance Miller- Guitar and Vocals, and Evan Posey- Drums. You will learn about its history, evolution, the creative process of this new album, and the interesting future that this Death Metal band writes when they show us an Exile Outside Of Paradise Conexión Rock Radio: Adam, we send our best wishes to you back home, and it is an honor to share with our readers in Latin America and other continents the history and news that Guillotine A.D. have in this year, welcome! Adam Miller: Thanks for having me here, Johnny, the same wishes for you and the people in Latin America. CR: I start this interview with you to find out if in recent weeks you have been able to play in Georgia, or are the restrictions still in force there? AM: We decided that the best thing for everyone was to wait for the conditions to improve to go out again and prepare for the release of the album, months ago the situation was difficult, especially moving from one state to another. Now that things are starting to pick up, we're working on putting together a touring schedule, and we feel this is the right time to play for people again. CR: Let's talk about good news, and let's talk about Born to Fall, the second album that the band has released on June 24 through M-Theory Audio
By the way, congratulations, and for Death Metal lovers this will be a very interesting discovery on the sonic radar all over the world. What impressions have people had towards this new chapter in the history of the band? AM: The response has been very positive, we are relatively an unknown band but we have felt that many people are beginning to know us from various continents around the world, many have had the opportunity to listen to the album from beginning to end since we offer a variety of songs to capture the attention and interest of those who are going to listen to us, and that in the end makes our proposal good and entertaining at the same time. CR: How do you feel about releasing this work in these strange circumstances due to the pandemic? AM: All this problem caused us a delay of two years, the process started in 2018 after releasing our debut a year ago, so we were working on the ideas between 2018 and 2019. We were scheduled to offer this new material in 2020 and it would have been interesting to see the reactions of the people at that time, and the best decision was to release it this year and it was a very good move that has benefited us now that we are preparing for the tours. CR: What is your opinion about all the changes that both bands and the music industry around the world have had to face since the start of this emergency in 2020?
AM: On the one hand, the situation was good for the bands, because despite the fact that the world was paralyzed for two years without concerts or festivals, we witnessed very good releases, far from all this reducing the activity of the bands. that all this increased considerably, despite the fact that many people were locked up at home playing video games or watching Netflix, they had the opportunity to enjoy very good albums at that time, despite being a challenge for all of us, we have been able to face this situation, and Even with the variants and the vaccines, many have stood up and have returned with new material and projects. CR: 5 years have passed since the release of the first album until this new one.
What happened to the band during that time? Projects? personal issues? Maybe at this point the band could have 3 or 4 albums instead of 2, or were they waiting for the right time to release something new and fresh for the fans? AM: One of the reasons is this two-year hiatus, on the other hand we were looking for an evolution in our sound, since at the beginning we were trying to mix Black Metal with Southern and other genres, with the new album we consider that it was a step forward. moving forward and we had a clearer vision of what we wanted to sound like back then, we are currently going through a period of musical maturity and this for listeners is a change of perspective from how we sounded before with what we do now. On the other hand, my brother Lance, who plays the guitar and sings, would also dedicate himself to his family and taking care of his children, when the pandemic arrived it was the ideal time to cover those priorities at home, taking advantage of that moment we decided to start composing ideas, recording demos and waiting to get into the studio, and in the end all this time away was worth it. CR: We know that Matt Washburn is the producer of this album, which by the way also produced the first album, what impressions do you have of Matt's work in the studio?
AM: Matt for us is an important element in the progression of the sound of Guillotine A.D., from the moment he worked with us on the first album he knew what we were looking for with our sound, we have an excellent working relationship, and we We are proud that he participated again for the recording of Born To Fall, he has done a fantastic job with an old school sound where all the instruments are raw and balanced. When we listened to the final mixes in the studio we all said: Wow! CR: Listening to the album we find great moments like Hammer, Vultures of Paradise, Spiritual Insect, Born to Fall and Madness of the Gods. What does the band offer us in this opportunity? Is it conceptual? AM: It's not a concept album, but in lyrical terms it's influenced by John Milton's Paradise Lost, about Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and how they fell into temptation, and were expelled from paradise, there are different stories and that. it makes the ideas flow and to be able to present the fan with a context of what we express in the album. CR: If the musical part seeks to please the fans, one of the attractive points is the cover courtesy of the great Eliran Kantor. How was the contact between the band and Eliran for his art to appear on the new album?
AM: That's an interesting story. Back in 2018 one of the first things that fascinated me and that I gave due attention to was seeing the cover of Atom by Atom by the British Satan, and I said that it would be perfect for a cover with this type of art, this attracts and is powerful when you look at the details within an illustration. One such example is Atheist's Jupiter album, I researched his work over the years and when we were in the process of recording the second album in the studios with Washburn I thought the best thing to do was contact Elinar to propose that he be the cover artist for the new album, so I sent him some ideas so that he would have a context of what we were talking about with our music. When he sent us the art through the internet we were very fascinated with what he did, and there is the final result on the cover that we are presenting. CR: For those who meet the band for the first time in this report Adam, we want to know how the idea of the name Guillotine was born?
Curiously, there are 10 bands with the same name, and for that reason you decided to add the AD extension, seeing that there were many bands that had rights problems due to this inconvenience? AM: It's a funny story about the beginnings of the band, my brother and I formed it in 2003, we were teenagers, and the first thing we thought of was the name, something that we could identify with, and after many ideas we took the name Guillotine for to be an instrument of death, and it sounded rude in a single word, it was also a feared name at the time of the French Revolution, and from there putting all those elements together we created our first turning point which was the release of our first album, here the most curious thing, Johnny, is that after the release there were more than 10 bands with the name Guillotina that were registered, so in order not to have legal problems we decided to make a change to the name, it was an agonizing decision that they confused us with other bands (laughs), and fortunately we have our name and our career established. CR: With this new album, have you had the opportunity to play outside of the US? What impressions do people have towards the Guillotine A.D. proposal? AM: Currently we have had a lot of work on social networks to be able to promote ourselves and be able to reach more people outside the United States, for example, on digital platforms we know that people from Italy, Spain, Portugal, some Latin American countries follow us, Mexico and Brazil. We have tried to offer a fresh and improved proposal to listeners, although we have not gone abroad, we know that there are many people in other countries who follow us, and that is a good sign. CR: For vinyl fans there is good news: the band has announced that in October the album will be released in this format in a limited way with some extra surprises, what details can you share with us?
AM: We are very excited to share this with the fans who want to have this on vinyl, this was what we were looking to sound like with that old school spirit, but without falling into the modernity of technology, because we are a band with a configuration simple when playing our instruments, we are not looking for a sweet sound and it has always been our intention to sound more natural and less mechanical in our recordings. CR: In addition to these surprises for analog lovers as part of the album promotion you have also released two music videos: Born to Fall and Exile, have you considered making another video, what is your favorite song? AM: The truth is that we have not decided what the next move would be, since there are very good songs on the album, so we must find one that represents us for the next video, something with elements of Black Metal, with some things from Texas like Pantera or Down, when that time comes we will be excited to work on new things for the fans. CR: With the new album already released Adam, does the band currently have tours or are they planning something for the next few weeks now that conditions have improved?
AM: Since the album came out Johonny, we have been able to play in several cities, we had the opportunity to play in South Carolina, and days later in Georgia. Coming up we'll be playing New Orleans, Louisiana, and then Mississippi. Later we will play in our city with Napalm Death, and we are happy to present ourselves again, people must be aware of our networks for more dates that we are working on, either the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023. CR: What message do you want to send to those who read us in this interview, and in the same way, thank you for the time granted back home
AM: Thanks for having me here, Johnny, it has been a pleasure talking with you, and thanks to our fans around the world for supporting us, we always invite you to follow us on our networks, so that new fans can get to know us through the platforms. digitals that our Death Metal will take your breath away, and we look forward to seeing you all soon on tour!
