The Dark Ages es nuestro álbum número 15.

GWAR
From a Dark Age… Risen! One of the most important bands that in recent years has been a feature of humor and controversy returns through the front door, and in this special report for its fans we offer you an entertaining interview with interesting details on its current history. We talked to Blothar The Berserker, Voice of the band GWAR, who are back with their new album called The Dark Ages, which was released on June 3 through Pit Records, and the band is currently on tour celebrating with their fans a celebration of 40 years of a legacy despite the circumstances that affected them years ago, and that with conviction to their ideals they continue without writing their history without giving up. Along with this release, the band is promoting their documentary This Is Gwar, where they make a retrospective of their history from their early days, the rise of their popularity both in the United States and in Europe, the changes after the death of the charismatic Oderus Urungus in 2014 and the decision to go ahead, resulting in a standing ovation from his fans. Sit back, grab a beer and snacks, put on some GWAR music and enjoy this interview as these warriors after fighting a battle to the death in a Dark Age… are risen! Conexion Rock Radio: Good morning from Honduras Blothar, thank you for accepting our invitation to make this special report for all GWAR fans around the world who want to know what the band has in their hands this year, and especially with a new album in the streets, an honor to talk with you and welcome! Blothar The Berserker: Greetings to all our fans in Central and Latin America, a joy to be able to talk to you, Johonny, and here I am ready for your questions. CR: We started this interview talking about The Dark Ages, the new album that GWAR released on June 3 through Pit Records, what reactions have you from people towards this new work that is currently being promoted on tour? through several cities in the United States?
Blothar: That's right Johonny, it's a long story, we've been on tour for the last few weeks and we're happy with that. The Dark Ages is our 15th album. Can you believe how far we've come now? It's amazing and we're taking advantage of this moment with the fans at our concerts and making it all something special. CR: It´s very good to know that the band maintains that strong preference that fans have every time you prepare tours, and taking advantage of the release of The Dark Ages, we know that This Is GWAR will be released on July 21, is a documentary that talks about almost 4 decades in the history of the band. How do you feel about this documentary, does it do justice to its legacy?
Blothar: That's a great story that I'm proud to be a part of. I've always thought that the best part of Gwar is that there really is an organization that goes all out to put all the elements on stage. This is not like Slipknot or Kiss. You know we are all a group of artists, musicians, sculptors, painters, and costume designers where each of them contributes to make our shows a success. All those people are part of the band, so this is the story that speaks to the level of commitment that it really takes to make GWAR like that, and we like it and have been trying for all these years. It is a story that we wanted to tell for a long time and people are reacting very well to the documentary, they liked it a lot and we are happy because it is a good story, it is very emotional, and it would be impossible for anyone to be left out of this project. CR: When Urungus died in 2014, the big question was what did you guys think at this moment? Perhaps many thoughts that this would be the end of Gwar, or did you decide to continue without him?
Blothar: In fact, that was the question we all had when we had to face that sad situation, but we gave the world an answer with the release of The Blood of Gods in 2017, and that would open the door to release The Dark Ages. When Orderus died we were in a dilemma whether or not to continue as a band, and the best thing was to continue. We sat down to write and compose ideas to make Gwar sound like Gwar, carrying in its spirit the sound that has characterized us since the first albums and incorporating various styles in our music. All of those factors were what shaped this new album, and fans wondered how to make a Gwar album without Orderus fronting. The best decision for us was to go back to the sound of the early days, and there is something that will be an interesting tidbit for the fans. Orderus was not the first vocalist, in fact, he was the third in the timeline, and I am currently the fourth vocalist, so the band has been and will be a project where there are many people involved where we all agree and put the decisions. Here many think that the vocalist is the leader and has control of everything (laughs) when that's really not true. CR: It's very interesting what you say and that you take this as a promise to keep going until the end, by the way, I don't know if you have had any comments that people say that both you and Orderus sound different from each other despite maintaining Gwar's DNA alive? Blothar: Your question, Johnny, is very interesting. The truth of all this is that Gwar is Gwar, and the musicians that make up the band seek to make the wisest possible decisions. I agree with the people that now we sound different from what we did years ago, previously I sang and played the bass, I contributed several ideas both in lyrics and music. And from the moment these transitions happened the main point was to give it the identity that the band has maintained for all these years. If we sound different now it is because everything obeys changes, just as it happens with life, so it happens with music, and in the case of Gwar we wanted to distance ourselves from what Orderus has done and from what I am currently contributing as vocalists, and I have reduced as far as possible my participation in terms of lyrics and melodies so that the songs are more oriented to the people and that they can get hooked on the first listen. And questions like yours are interesting because many would think that we would be placing ourselves on a more commercial side, and the truth is that we don't do this to sell more records, we do this because we love what we do as a band. Since the band started, we were 3 members, a guitarist, drummer and I, along with the others we recorded Scumdogs Of The Universe in 1990, musically it was a takeoff for the band in many aspects. We have received positive comments from people and we try to make all this work, because after that we were able to make really good albums that can live up to The Blood Of Gods, and we consider that from there that is the way we should keep making good music, maybe many think we should retire and go to sleep, but we are still one of the best live bands that ever existed, and I don't think people will get bored or walk away from this, so we are satisfied with everything we have done to date. CR: About the concept of the album, the band has commented that humanity is facing a dark age where they face again enemies that they have known in the past, and that at the end of the day you are victorious.
If we apply this to our reality, our dark age would be the current pandemic and wars, the enemies of the past would be the same problems that we faced before, or do you offer us something different in the musical universe of GWAR? Blothar: You are very right about the current context, about the concept is based on everything that has happened with this pandemic that has attacked us in an unbridled way, and in particular with some people who relate all this to superstitions, fears of advances of science in obtaining a cure and conspiracy theories that we relate everything to the old times to live a new dark age. For this album we have planned to do it in a conceptual way and link it with a comic called GWAR: In The Duoverse Of Absurdity, and this is the first time that we put together the album and the graphic novel almost at the same time.
We consider this as a new type of experience that both things go together where we are allowed to show a story where it offers interesting details and rich content, since in the band we have a fascination with comics, which is why we wanted to make a connection between the music and a graphic section, and this will blow the minds of many fans around the world. CR: For this new album you have the collaboration of Elizabeth Hale and Hey Steve, what impressions do you have about the contribution that both gave for the tracks The Cutter and Rise Again?
Blothar: Having Lzzy Hale was a special opportunity for the album as she's a tremendous vocal and guitar player, as well as being a big part of the band Halestorm, and her involvement in The Cutter was very solid. The song talks about a girl who has had enough of the bullying of her schoolmates and decides to get out of it and take revenge on her. It was very interesting for us to have a female heroine as central theme for the song, and it was something we hadn't done before. So, we wanted to have a voice there and it was really cool to have Lzzy collaborate with us. On Rise Again Hey Steve brought his own, his real name is Luke Dick, and he's worked with a lot of artists as a songwriter. He has recently worked with Miranda Lambert and he is a country artist, curiously he has a pop project called Hasty but you really know that Luke is a great songwriter and he is a good singer and we wanted a voice to the album with a cut between country and Hip Hop, yeah, we thought it was fun, and we got it.
CR: The album brings great moments and one of them is the track Ratcatcher, it´s a clear reference to the Pied Piper of Hamelin and even the sound has a lot of influence from Alice Cooper or the glam of the time, Blothar, what is the inspiration of this track and how was it for the band to get out of their comfort zone?
Blothar: About the glam influence that's definitely true. We wanted to make such a song. When we actually wrote the lyrics, it was different when we were preparing the final idea, as everyone knows in composition, the music comes first and the lyrics last, and we wanted to make a song very Alice Cooper-style that people would enjoy listening to because We are very fond of glam, but not precisely the glam of Los Angeles, but the glam of the United Kingdom where artists such as David Bowie, Sweet and Slade stand out to mention examples. We cannot deny that part of our influences come from them, which is why in the comic we wanted to reflect the song with that Alice Cooper feeling, and we were happy with that and part of the result was the inspiration of those bands that I mentioned to you previously. CR: Gwar is currently releasing this album through Pit Records, and in 2021 the EP The Disc with No Name will be released, we know that the label is owned by the band, what impressions do you have in manage their own label and being able to do things without rushing like other labels have done over the years?
Blothar: The advantage of having our own label is doing our things our way. A lot of bands hate labels because they always put pressure on them (laughs), in our case everything is so much fun, in our case we are eternally grateful to Metal Blade, it has been our home for a lifetime as well as other bands that have made history with them . I reiterate Metal Blade deserves to be applauded not only by us, but by other bands that without their help we would not exist or would be in a completely unknown profile. CR: On this tour, do you plan to revisit any of the band's classic albums live or are there requests from fans to do this kind of thing?
Here in Latin America Gwar became known with that iconic America Must Be Destroyed Blothar: We would love and wish to do a tour celebrating the anniversary of all those albums that are part of the history that we have lived and that with our sound we have achieved that focus, which is why we are in force to this day. Albums like the one you say America Must Be Destroyed or This Toilet Earth we see as representative examples of how those works gave the band a gigantic push in those years. We believe that it will be necessary to do this type of celebration and to be able to make a setlist with classic songs that are considered the anthems of each album, but we seek to give priority to new material. We don't want to be a band that only lives off its legacy or that does this for mere commercialism in defense of nostalgia, so what we're going to do on these tours is balance the new album and classic songs, so that people can enjoy it of those surprises. We are very much looking forward to organizing something for 2023 in several Latin American countries, especially in South America so that people can be part of this live celebration and experience the power of Gwar in its natural state. CR: Gwar is a band that over the years is considered a cult and influential in new generations of bands around the world.
A band from El Salvador called Gryphon wear costumes when performing. Whose idea was it for the costume’s you guys wear? Blothar: We've made our own costumes and other props, and that's going to be one of the interesting things, so I'm excited for people to watch this documentary because then they'll realize where that idea came from, because we want to be different from others. bands like Slipknot, Kiss and Mushroomhead. Including we have been related to bands like Lordi that many claims that their band's costumes are based on ours, for that reason there have been certain controversies that people make in those comparisons. We are friends with Mr. Lordi and like us he makes his suits in a personalized way in the same way for the rest of the band. As I told you before, Johonny, Gwar is a group where many people get involved, and despite the fact that they do not play instruments, they give their talent to generate a great impression on stage, and the contribution that these people make is unique and very great in our environment. CR: Currently with this new album out on the streets Blothar, are you planning to organize tours for various festivals and performances in Europe?
Blothar: We plan to visit various points in Europe at the end of July, we will play in England, France, Germany and Holland, after that we look for other routes for the end of the year or the beginning of 2023, one of those points will be to visit several countries in South America, it is a fact that we will play for many people in these next few days. CR: What message do you want to send to those who have read this interview, and many thanks to you Blothar for the time granted on this opportunity, may it be the first, but may not be the last interview that we will talk about an iconic band such as GWAR
Blothar: Thanks to you Johonny, and thanks to the people who have supported us over the years, we invite you to enjoy the new album, and we hope to see you soon in your countries to enjoy a destructive experience in our style! Special thanks to Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey at Looters for their help with this interview, and to Blothar The Berserker for their time on this report.
