HAND OF KALLIACH
HAND OF KALLIACH
From The Tempest ... To A Promising Horizon If you are a lover of Folk Metal we offer you a proposal that is emerging in the midst of a pandemic and that seeks to be recognized worldwide, for that reason Conexion Rock Radio in this special report invites you to learn about its music, history and future plans that they wish to perform in an era that marked many changes for the industry in the last months. Our stop now is Edinburgh, Scotland (UK) and we introduce you all to the band Hand of Kalliach. A band made up of two musicians, both in marriage, who have become known in 2020 with their EP called Shade Beyond, and that has attracted the attention of locals and strangers, making their proposal the object of good ratings by critics. , and fans will look at this band as one of their favorites. We spoke with Sophie Fraser- Vocals and Bass, and John Fraser- Vocals, Guitars, and Drums, who share impressions of how this project was born that seeks to make history in the national and international scene, of the concept they present in their music, their position before the current situation that the world is experiencing which has notably affected the entertainment industry, and despite these and other difficulties these musicians will have to overcome, and that for many we will witness the future that this band fights in the middle of a storm to achieve a promising horizon. Conexión Rock Radio: Sophie, John, Greetings from Honduras, Central America, we send from here our best wishes that are well there in in home, and it's an honor in talk with you and share in this special report with our readers about your history and upcoming news that Hand of Kalliach have in 2021, welcome!
John Fraser: Thank you very much for having us Johonny, and greetings to the metalheads of mighty Honduras! Sophie Fraser: Absolutely, thanks for having us, it’s a pleasure! CR: We start this interview in know how has it been for the band in face this situation that affects you as artists there in Scotland? Sophie: It’s such a strange time at the moment for artists and everyone. We actually only started Hand of Kalliach during lockdown; we found that having a lot more free time and a lot of pent up frustration, anxiety and creativity meant making music was a great outlet for all our emotions. We are at the stage where normally we would be going to gigs and gigging ourselves but nothing is open yet in Scotland and probably won’t be for some time. John: It is definitely a different experience for artists not being able to perform but we’ve enjoyed exploring some of the other ways of meeting people and getting our music out into the world, particularly with all the communications avenues the digital age offers. Whilst we do lament not being able to play locally yet, it is absolutely thrilling that our music is being played in Honduras and around the world. CR: 2020 has been an important year for the band with the debut of your EP called Shade Beyond, what reactions have from the critics and new fans towards these songs, and how do you feel releasing this material in these strange circumstances?
Sophie: It was definitely a crazy year! We only started the band in late 2020 and released the EP without much of a plan, or expectation that anyone would be listening. It was a sort of passion project that we did for the music, and we really didn’t know if our unusual sound would resonate with anyone. But within a few days of release, we were listed on the Metal Archives and from there picked up by the host of a metal radio station in the UK, who made us her ‘Band of the Month’ in January, and from there on it has been a mad ride of reviews, interviews and plays. We feel we’ve learnt so much in the past few months and have been introduced to so many incredible fellow metalheads who have appreciated our weird sound, it’s an honour really! CR: We know that this is your first time recording in a studio, what impressions did you have of this whole process?
John - Believe it or not we actually recorded everything at home! This was partly due to COVID lockdown meaning that studios were all closed in Scotland, but also we didn’t have the budget to go for the full studio treatment - and really, we didn’t know it was going to be as popular as it has been! So it was a very different experience to the studio recordings I have done with previous bands. But it was really fun - with just the two of us writing and recording, we could move very quickly from discussing ideas over breakfast to a first recording by night. CR: Was the EP produced by you, or did you have a producer to help you? Sophie: It was almost entirely self-produced at home, John has previously done some audio engineering training so he could work up the instrument tones himself. We did have some help from a mastering engineer to get the finished product up to the right volume levels, but other than that it was just us! CR: We must tell you that the EP is profiled as one of the most interesting debuts this year, the five songs on this EP have their completely different character, and that makes their proposal attractive to young and contemporary audiences, to the point that it can be played on radios.
What reactions have you had from people when listening to your songs on digital platforms? Sophie: Thanks so much, that’s great to hear! We are really glad you think that, we set out with the aim that each song should have its own unique flavour, whilst still connected by the overall Hand of Kalliach sound. We were really experimenting with new sounds and had so many ideas to try and it’s ended up with a little pick n mix selection which interests a variety of tastes which we love! John: Yeah, delighted that you find it so interesting! it was really refreshing to be able to start with a blank slate, with no external influences or expectations, and just make the music that we really wanted to make. Nobody had heard us play the tracks before, even friends or family so we could really do whatever we wanted. Sophie: In terms of reactions, I think from the outset people didn’t quite know what to categorise us as - we got badged as Folk Metal by the Metal Archives, but whilst there are Celtic influences in the music we rarely actually use folk instruments; also we use heavy melodies and death metal vocals, but it’s not exactly melodic death metal either! But overall the reactions have been really positive, and we’ve been totally blown away - for a lockdown bedroom passion project, we’re extremely humbled with all the very positive reviews and radio time we’ve been given. John: Absolutely. We’re really so grateful to have the opportunity to get our music out to so many people across the world, which digital platforms are truly fantastic for. We truly feel such a sense of connection when people from across the globe resonate with our songs that are so entrenched in our small country’s culture, history and mythology. It’s been amazing to see where our music is most popular - Scotland itself ranks way below the US, Mexico, Italy and Germany in terms of our listeners! CR: Let's talk about the origins of the band for those who know you for the first time in this report.
Curiously both are married. How was the idea to make an interesting band like this and why the name? John - We are indeed married with kids, so you could say the band is a permanent fixture for us, in one form or another! The project was something we had talked about doing for some time, to meld all our favourite elements of metal with the passion and energy that is found in traditional Scottish folk music. We started writing in summer 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown in the UK. The restrictions at the time served as a good prompt to do so, and it was great to do something positive and productive whilst trying to get through the turmoil that was 2020. The name Hand of Kalliach comes from the legend of the ‘Cailleach’, a Scottish witch god of winter, and in mythology the story goes that she lives at the bottom of an enormous whirlpool that is just off the coast of Islay where my family is from. The whirlpool itself is at a site called Corryvreckan, and is the 3rd largest whirlpool in the world. She emerges from the whirlpool to usher in winter, and has a lot of malign connotations in folklore; but that said, she is also a sometimes nurturing creator deity, so the music we make is centred around these dual concepts of benevolence and malevolence, all against the backdrop of the history, mythology and land/seascapes of the Scottish islands. CR: Are you currently looking for a record label to support you, or do you see that working independently is the best option as a band?
Sophie: We are absolutely open to discussions with labels, however we’re not really actively looking for labels yet as we’re quite focused at the moment on writing and recording more material first. Whilst we’re still very pleased with what we have produced with Shade Beyond, we want to really cement our sound with some more focussed releases first before we take a serious look at label options! CR: You recently released the track Cinders, are there plans to record a full length, or do you see that recording EPs would be a more practical option for resources, time and budget in a studio?
John: Absolutely! With ‘Cinders’, we wanted to see how much we could refine our sound into a single track, with all the elements listeners really enjoyed from the EP. Whilst Cinders was recorded at home again, this time we had it professionally mixed which we think brought a lot more to the sound, and we’re looking to carry that same energy into a full-length album we’re currently writing which hopefully will be ready for Autumn 2021. CR: Being that you are a two-piece, we know that things in the studio are easier, but do you have any plans in the future to have session musicians for upcoming albums or live musicians?
Sophie: We’re pretty comfortable with doing the recording ourselves, but we’ll need some help with performing for sure! We’d love to work with some live musicians for performances but with the COVID restrictions it’s been impossible to even start practicing with others yet. It will hopefully help us be more disciplined. Bringing in new musicians will certainly be a challenge but an exciting prospect! CR: What is your point of view on how the pandemic has generated severe changes in the entertainment industry worldwide, seeing as there are no concerts and tours, do you plan to prepare new material this year?
John - It's definitely been a dire time for musicians, particularly since in the digital age bands are more reliant than ever on sales from merch and door takings at gigs rather than the razor-thin margins available from streaming and digital music sales. Venues and the industry around music has also of course taken a big hit. However, long term we’re quite optimistic that things will bounce back, possibly even stronger than before – music, and metal in particular, will always be something that is best enjoyed live, and having lived apart from each other for so much of COVID we think there will be a huge level of enthusiasm for gigs returning once vaccines are circulated and infections are under control. And yes, as you say, it gives us more time until then to work on our album! CR: Many consider that virtual concerts will be an option to stay current on the map with this confinement. Are you for or against the band doing virtual concerts or will you wait for things to improve to meet the fans face to face? Sophie: We love the idea of connecting with fans online via virtual concerts, and have seen a couple that were done pretty well. We have discussed it, and we probably wouldn’t try and play our full tracks live as it would require a lot of pre-recorded backing that sort of defeats the point. But we may do some stripped down songs or acoustic versions rather than whole gigs I think, otherwise we’ll need to train our kids up to play drums! CR: Does the band currently have dates that they are rescheduling or will you focus exclusively on the studio with new ideas?
John - We have not yet been able to play at any gigs due to COVID-19 restrictions, but hope to play our first gigs later in 2021 once things have opened up. We love live shows and have attended plenty, and we really value the experience and connection that you get from them. There is definitely merit in the amount of creative space you have in recording tracks, but nothing compares to the atmosphere of a live show. Soph has never played live so it will be a totally new experience! CR: What message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview?
I also want to thank you for the time you have taken to answer our questions on Conexión Rock Radio Sophie: Thank you so much Johonny! We would like to say a massive thanks to all of those that have supported us so far, including writers like yourself - in the short time since we've launched, we have been overjoyed by the reception from fans, and it has been such a validation to even see one listener enjoying and resonating with our music. We are incredibly grateful for it and really appreciate those that champion the metal underground. John: Agreed, the international metal community has been so welcoming and encouraging, so thank you. If any of your readers want to be kept updated they can follow us on Spotify/Bandcamp and our social media channels and they’ll be the first to know when we’ve got new releases! CR: friends, thanks for your time! We hope to talk with you again and give continuity to the story that the band will make soon, a hug from Honduras! John: Thank you Johonny! Sophie: And all the best to your Honduran readers! Special thanks to Markus Eck of Metalmessage for his help in making this report possible, and to the band for the time allotted in this enjoyable conversation.
