HOLLENTOR

HOLLENTOR
A Panoramic Divergence From The Heights Heavy and Power Metal with themes of evil and dark fantasy. These are the elements that we offer to all of you in this new international interview, and the proposal that we present in this space is destined to conquer new audiences and reach the most distant places on the planet with its sound, making our reported guest feel literally like an astronaut watching a powerful shock wave sweep across the planet in a panoramic divergence from above. Ladies and Gentlemen, from the United States we present Hollentor An interesting project that is made up of a single person, but that has interesting allies in each of its releases, making each album a different and attractive experience for those who want to hear new and innovative things. And we caught up with the mastermind behind Hollentor: Glen Poland, who gladly accepted our invitation to chat with us, and share with the world about the general reception of his third album called Divergency, which was released in January. from 2023, in addition to the production process and the concept that he presents to us with this new work in his discography, of the guests that appear in the studio, and we do a retrospective in his career where Poland is currently preparing for an interesting sound assault with special guests that they accompany him on his next tours, thus taking his proposal to the masses, and that possibly in the not too distant future he can visit our countries. Conexión Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Glen, thank you for agreeing to our interview today, and it is an honor to echo your proposal, and that our readers around the world know about your story and the plans that Hollentor has this year, welcome! Glen Poland: Thank you very much for having me Johonny, it's a pleasure to be here. CR: Thank you very much for your time Glen, how do you feel as an artist to be back in action after these almost 3 years of forced hiatus since the 2020 emergency?
GP: I think the pandemic had a very big effect on the music industry, and we all had to take a second look at how we were doing this, and I think what it did was bring artists and fans closer together because in normal I have felt that there is a very big gap, because you are looking to go on tour and play for all the fans in various countries, but when this problem increased (the pandemic) all that was very difficult and, then, many had to come up with various ideas and reinventing the way you approach fans through lockdown, for that reason all of this was done online, through Zoom interviews like this one, and other social media where fans could stay connected and interact during the pandemic . And now that the pandemic is over many artists are coming out to play live and try to do as many shows in both cities and countries in the best possible way. CR: Already the music industry all over the world is recovering from this severe blow, and the bands are returning to the road as you mentioned before to bring joy to the fans, but let's talk about Divergency, your third album that came out on the 24th of January, by the way, congratulations, this is an album that will be liked by many around the world, especially those who will hear about your project for the first time, are you one of the Do you seek to meet expectations or do you wait for people's reactions? on several continents once they have enjoyed the album in physical and digital format?
GP: I am one of the people who seeks to make people taste music. In my case I try to write songs and create music. I've grown up with 80's Heavy Metal bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Dokken. That era was one of my favorites as far as music is concerned. I am currently 53 years old and enjoying that music makes you not let go of your life, you never lose that and in the end you end up loving it. With music I look for everyone to participate and enjoy what one person can create, I have loved classic bands like Killswitch Engage or Pantera, and there are also bands that have a strong sound based on a tuning change to D. Can you imagine combining the classic sound of those bands with the modern elements of the new proposals, it's a great point there, with Divergency I achieved that point of being able to do something that I liked since I was young, but at the same time enjoy music that reflects the same old school Heavy Metal music and writing patterns. CR: In May 2022 you released Escaping Myself, you literally had no rest working on the process for this new album. Many will say that these songs are new ideas, or were left out of the Escaping sessions. What details can you share with us?
GP: That's right. Escaping Myself was released in 2022, but due to the pandemic the process took approximately two years. From the moment I was in the studio recording the songs I had the opportunity to work with George Lynch again, in the same way with Ripper Owens, taking advantage of the fact that he had his tour in Mexico made things easier for us, for that reason Escaping, despite the fact that it is one year after its launch, suffered severe delays due to this situation that took the world by surprise. One thing's for sure, I'm planning to tour even though Hollentor is a project and not a full-time band, since I'm the one who writes lyrics and music, and then I meet Glen Drover in the recording studio right now. that he is the sound engineer who takes care of everything there. But playing live is a step that must be taken, and in Hollentor I am with the possibility of having Shawn and Glen Drover together with Ripper to play with me on various dates in Brazil and do some covers and of course play the new material, the idea is to introduce people to what this project can offer from now on. CR: Now that you mentioned that Hollentor is a one-person project but has guest collaborations, have you considered looking for a stable lineup to be able to present the albums both live and in the studio?
GP: The aspect of performing live was something I never considered due to the fact how this project was born so long ago. I am a guitarist who loves music, who loves metal and it is an important part of my life, if you go to my Facebook page I share there interesting things and memories that I share from my younger days, especially in high school. As I told you before, I'm 53 years old and I've always played in bands. Currently I have a job and I have always taken care of my family. I would say that I am the typical normal or habitual person at home. But in 2016 two important things happened, the first, that I was part of the Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp where you can go play the guitar, and you can share time with those you consider your heroes. On that occasion Judas Priest was the band that led the camp, and for four days you could go to Hollywood or Las Vegas and be able to play with them, that was a dream come true for a Priest fan, it's my band that I've admired since teenager and was determined by everything to go to that place. I was nervous and terrified to see them face to face, I was scared, and after the third day of camp they prepare you to go on stage. On that occasion I played Metal Gods and played the guitar solo. It was an incredible experience that made me feel good and at the same time gave me confidence in being able to do things. In addition to Priest, I was able to meet other talented musicians such as Rudy Sarzo, who has played in many well-known bands such as Ozzy, Whitesnake and Quiet Riot along with Randy Roads, Lita Ford, Vinnie Appice, Teddy Andreadis who was a keyboardist for Guns N'Roses, Tracy Guns. And we all had breakfast there, we had a good time with all of them and they saw me play. They encouraged me and told me that I was very good at playing, and they were comments that I received with all humility, even though I played well at that moment I felt very nervous, but it was a pleasant experience in those days. The second thing that happened to me was when I was online one night and I was working abroad, precisely in Africa. Glen Drover was online and there were a lot of people interacting with him. So I went in and decided to see what he was talking about, I'm a Megadeth fan, I love it. Upon entering the room, one of the people noticed something curious in my name, and they asked me: what is your name? I told them my name was Glen Poland, as they possibly thought he was a relative of Chris Poland, or a Megadeth fan who went by the name Glen Drover.
Then, after the podcast, he would announce that he would give lessons via Skype and they could sign up for three lessons there. And I thought he would be great and I signed up via email. Then when we started our first session he asked me for my real name, and I told him my name was Glen, and he told me that it seems to be for a Megadeth fan, and he asked me for my name again, I had to tell him that my name was Glen Poland and I had to show him my driver's license (laughs). CR: As in the rest of the releases in the history of Hollentor we have guests, and in the case of Divergency it is not an exception, we already know in advance the contributions of talented musicians such as Rudy Sarzo- Bass, Shawn Drover- Drums, Tim Ripper Owens- Vocals- George Lynch- Guitars, Glen Drover- Guitars, but the big surprises here are Henning Basse, (x-Firewind)- Vocals, James MacDonough (x-Megadeth/Iced Earth)- Bass, James LoMenzo (x- Black Label Society/current-Megadeth)- Bass and Eric Peterson- Guitars.
What impressions do you have in sharing talents with all these guests for the recording sessions? GP: All of them have liked what I have done, and I have asked them if they would like to participate in the project, and the first thing they answer is that they want to hear about the material that I have released previously, so I sent them the links and from that way they can hear everything without problems. And I have had a very good reaction from them to the point that they have told me that I am a good writer and composer, and just like that, they have given me a positive response, and for me I consider myself lucky to have all of them for this new album. CR: Was there a musician who for some reason was left out of the process?
GP: Not really. Consider that the musicians I mentioned to you above were perfect based on the vision that was needed for the new Hollentor album. But I have done something else under my own name, and I decided to cover Stone Cold by the band Rainbow (song that appears on the album Straight Between the Eyes of 1982), having Todd La Torre, Vocalist of Queensrÿche, as vocalist. and David Rosenthal, Rainbow's original keyboardist, on YouTube there is the video of this version and there we all appear working in the studio with the arrangements and the recording, and we tried to recreate this song faithful to the original version of the time, Todd did a excellent vocal work there and I was afraid something would go wrong in the process, but this rendition of Stone Cold came out amazing, it was incredible to make this possible alongside great musicians like them. CR: Is there a musician you admire that you wish would be your guest on a future album? Who or who would they be?
CR: The first person that comes to mind is Zakk Wylde. I would love to have him guest for a fourth album, the collaboration may or may not happen, but I would try to share his talents for a future recording. I think he could do something different with the Hollentor sound, maybe something with a darker, heavier sound, and get out of my comfort zone. It would be such an honor indeed to have Zakk play for an album, and it would be a dream come true to have someone I've admired for years participate. CR: We will cross our fingers that this collaboration with Zakk can happen in the future. Returning to Divergency we come across very notable tracks such as Divergency, Find the Light, Kraken Awakens, Lotus Eater and We Are Chosen.
What Hollentor offers us in this new adventure, by the way, the cover of an astronaut seeing the earth from space is very striking, what details can you share with us? CP: For Divergency I have decided to do different concepts in relation to the two albums I have released before. So that people can know something about the band, the name Hollentor means Gate to Hell in German. So the first album (his self-titled debut from 2017) the cover shows a skull showing a door to hell, already in the second (released in 2022) it is the same skull, but from inside the same hell you can see someone who he crawls on the ground to get out of there and just above the door you can see the word "exit", these are hidden details for those who have Escaping Myself and can appreciate that curiosity. CR: In addition to the CD, do you have fan requests for it to be released on vinyl as well? What do you think if a Crowfunding or Kickstarter campaign can work for these projects?
GP: At that point everything is possible and it will depend on people's demand if they want this material to come out in that format. Although for now they are only on CD and you can order them directly from Glen Drover through his social networks and you can leave them a message saying that you are interested in having a copy of Divirgency, and Glen will provide it to people with his respective autograph. Regarding a campaign to make a Crowfunding or Kickstarter project, in my opinion I would say that of course I would love to be part of something, so I would 100% support such a proposal. CR: From a Glen Poland perspective, how do you feel about witnessing a journey that you started in 2015 with 3 albums released? GP: It's a dream come true, as most of us fight for that dream and once it comes true we live that moment. That happens with all the people who are fans of metal all over the world. In my case I work in the construction industry 60 hours a week, so I have done this project and I am looking for a balance with that work. This music is my hobby, and I do it in my free time, and as a result I made a video that has more than 100 thousand views on YouTube, and another one that I made recently that has exceeded 18 thousand views. I am glad to know that people enjoy what I have done, and that gives me happiness and at the same time satisfaction, the truth is that I am not looking to make money the easy way or live from music. I have a job, and for me music is my passion, it's my love and my heart, and that's free for people who want that in their hands. CR: Currently we know that you work independently, do you consider that this is the best way for bands to have better income or have you considered looking for a record label so that it can support you internationally?
GP: In my point of view the recording industry has changed in recent years, and it used to not be what it used to be. We know that the first people to protest these changes was Lars Ulrich (Metallica) and he emphasized that these changes were not good for the artists, especially when everything was modernized to the digital format and one of those platforms was Napster. Everything was completely different and Lars was absolutely right in the end, musicians used to be offered money to make their productions and organize their tours. Now the bands must go out to play and make their income in their presentations in various cities, along with that you must sell tickets, and for this you must have a strong fan base that can support you and thus be able to cover operating costs to make a show in the place where they are requested. The gangs have undergone drastic changes in the way they work in the last 30 years, and for that reason they work on campaigns to reach as many people as possible, insisting in many ways so that these people can enjoy your work, and that way they can respond on tour. Sadly there are no more talent scouts who go to clubs and shows to see what bands appear there and see if they have the option of signing them to their record labels, releasing their albums and putting them on tour. That doesn't exist anymore, but if you are one of those who work independently writing music and managing everything by your own means you have more opportunities to play festivals, in the end with a well planned plan you can be successful. CR: With everything you've done with this Glen project, have you thought about recording a live album with Hollentor in the future?
GP: For now I don't think a project of these characteristics is possible, my only priority is to focus on more productions in the studio. Already with three albums released I consider that there are enough songs that are good to be able to present them in a live show. The most possible thing there is that it will be recorded in the future for a DVD, and I am looking to do that in a couple of years for a tour in Brasilia. So that would be the ideal opportunity to record something there. CR: What's next for Hollentor after this release... more promotion or are you preparing to take that step of going on a sonic assault on the masses?
GP: I have three goals to accomplish within this project. The first is to do a show with Tim "Ripper" Owens and other special guests. The second is to prepare Hollentor's fourth album, possibly in 2024 and possibly have a collaboration with Zakk Wylde, and have new musicians when that time comes, and have those classic versions keep that magic with a whole new air. The third is to work on a covers project and have some musicians who participated in the original versions appear there. For that reason me and Glen Drover are working on a possible set list and at the same time with the possible guests. For now we have versions of Rainbow's Stone Cold, and later we plan to work on Black Sabbath's Voodoo and Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers. So we will be working and inviting the people who appeared on those songs. One of those musicians is Vinny Appice, and we want him to express his drumming style with these two songs. CR: At the end of this conversation Glen, what message do you want to send to the people who have enjoyed this interview, and I want to thank you for the time you have given us in this opportunity for Conexión Rock Radio
GP: I want to thank you, Johonny, for your interest in talking about this project, and I also thank the people who have supported this work over the years. And I promise that I will do my best to continue making good music. Special thanks to Glen Poland for the time given in this special interview.
