HOODED MENACE
CR: Con los singles Blood Ornaments y Chime Diabolicus, los fans gritaran que The Menace Are Back!
Kiitos! HK: Kiitos! Igual para ti Johonny, un abrazo! HOODED MENACE
The Dark Ringing Of The Bells Death and Doom Metal made in Finland for the world! It is what we have for all of you in the following interview that Conexion Rock Radio performs on its tour of various countries in the world, and definitely this band of your favorites once you know their history, and especially their music. Our next stop is in Helsinki, and that is where Harri Kuokkanen, Vocalist of the band Hooded Menace, welcomes us and we share everything related to his new record production called The Tritonus Bell, which will be released on August 27, 2021 through the Season Of Mist label, where the band will seek in this new chapter of their career to meet the expectations of their fans and the demands of critics who seek to profile The Tritonus Bell as one of the most remarkable in the second half of 2021 . Hooded Menace was formed in 2007. In that same year they released a demo to make themselves known on the local scene, but it would be for 2008 that they would release their first full-length called Fulfill the Curse, and currently they are made up of Lasse Pyykkö- Bass, Pekka Koskelo- Drums, Teemu Hannonen- Guitars, and of course, Harri Kuokkanen- Vocals. You will know everything concerning the production process of their new album, curiosities and history of the band through the years, their position in the face of the pandemic, and once everything is normalized, and that these Finns invite us to listen the time of pandemic the dark ringing of the bells. Conexión Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Harri! I sent my good wishes that everything is well at home, and it is an honor to be able to make this special report with you and share with our readers the next news that Hooded Menace has for its fans this year, welcome!
Harri Kuokkanen: Hello Johonny, a joy to talk to you this day, and the same wishes from Finland for all of you there in Central and Latin America. CR: Thanks to you Harri, and how have things been there in Finland with vaccines and artistic activities that have been forced to stop due to this situation that the world is going through now? HK: During all this time that the emergency began, we have done things quite well and that is why we focused on the studio and for that reason we have not been doing tours or concerts since 2018, so when all this started we already had many ideas ready, and in the end the whole process was very easy for us once we started recording. CR: Let's talk about the good news the band has for its fans around the world.
This next August 27 they will launch their work number 6 called The Tritonus Bell through Season Of Mist and everything indicates that it will be another of the releases in this chaotic year that will be received with open arms. What expectations do you have with this new album? HK: I think we're pretty excited because it has some new elements compared to the old stuff, for example, now the album has more old-school heavy metal influences, as well as the classic Death and Doom Metal sound that we were doing previously. . So this is all something new from our perspective, mixing classic elements with a whole new air, and Hooded Menace has so much to offer in this new work, we can't wait to see people's reactions when they hear the album cover to cover already. the time to hear about their impressions once they finish listening to it, but it has something new to offer and the band waits patiently waiting for those reactions when that moment arrives. CR: With the singles Blood Ornaments and Chime Diabolicus, fans are screaming that The Menace Are Back! How does the band feel about releasing a great work like this in these strange circumstances?
HK: As a band we consider this new album as one more step in our career, but as I mentioned before we have not had live activity since 2018, and in 2020 we had contemplated doing a special celebration of the 10th anniversary of Never Cross The Dead, but due to We didn't do that to the pandemic, that's why we spent more time studying and taking advantage of the confinement, everything was easier, and we just hope that all this happens and prepare some dates to make the anniversary and play some songs from the new album. CR: The cover is a very good figment of Wes Benscoter's imagination.
Could it be that Hooded tells the world that when the bell rings he must face the darkest moment of this pandemic? What is the concept behind Tritonus? HK: For this new album there is no particular theme or any story, our lyrics have been more and more like painting the atmosphere as a support to the sound, although our music reflects sadness and darkness, and through this I seek to paint one more image. precise about it to fit the sound based on the right mood, I also like animated covers, especially old school, since I am a big fan of that time, and from there with all those elements, music, ideas, and image we create a context so that the proposal appeals to those who want to hear it. And that is why I consider that music above all has stood out in all of our works. CR: By the way, let me tell you that the cover reminds me of classic works like the first Entombed or Dismember, I think this will be an attractive point for the fans of the band once they have the album in their hands.
HK: What you say is very interesting, and even more so pointing out those albums, we are very fond of school trips, and we see that as very good even though we live in different eras, and The Tritonus Bell reflects that old spirit, but with new air. It is gratifying to know that there are people like you who make these types of referrals. CR: A fan of the band here in Honduras named William David Guerra asked me if the band's old Facebook was hacked? How true was that?
HK: Hi William, thank you for your question. About the hack it was true. There was no blackmail or anything like that, we don't know who or who did this, but overnight we couldn't publish anything or update statuses. We came to a moment to think that a lot of spam could have caused this action by watching meme videos on our page. It was an uncomfortable situation, and at the same time we were all upset, but we did not receive any blackmail, even though all this got out of our hands we made the claim several times to Facebook and exposed that there were people who were posting shit on our behalf, and sadly everything that happened caused us to lose many followers. Now with the new networks we are looking at how to recover them or find us again, and these types of experiences are the most unpleasant for a band in matters of social networks. CR: For this new album you have Andy LaRocque as Producer and Kimmo Perkkiö who has helped in the recording of the drums. What experiences do you have of working with them in the studio?
HK: The work in the studio was really smooth, we have recorded in various places in Finland and I know that the guitar and drums recordings were made in different places so that everything was done in the most practical way possible. We are lucky to have our work team that has helped in these locations and the work that Andy and Kimmo did was tremendous, and has given a very interesting approach to the sound of the guitar, and the experience of working with him was very nice. We saw that everything was going very fast, but Andy knew how to understand what we were looking for, and that work together was what resulted in this new album, and working with the King Diamond Guitarist has been a great honor. for us, and he has done a very remarkable job in our sound, especially with the guitars that already has a very particular stamp for the band. CR: This is your sixth career album and your second with the Season Of Mist label?
What impressions do you have of your relationship with this label that has supported you in recent years? HK: Well, there isn't much to say about it because like you said, this is the second album with Season Of Mist, and therefore my second job with the band, so I can't give you a general point of view when they were working. previously on another stamp. The label has been very excellent with Hooded Menace, and from the moment we signed with them we have gained a lot of support, as have the other bands that work with them. I consider our relationship to be very good with your staff, for my part I have no complaints against them, on the contrary, I have many good compliments for your staff. CR: Fourteen years of career, 6 studio albums, many divisions, EPs and compilations ... it's quite a story for the band.
We know that you are a musician who is active in various projects such as Hail Conjurer, Horse Latitudes, Initiated, Regere Sinister, and Ride for Revenge. Are you satisfied with everything you have achieved to date from the moment you entered Hooded? Do you see that from this album a kind of sonic pattern can be defined for future releases? HK: I feel very happy to be part of Hooded Menace because it is a band that is very different from the others, that implies a creative process in everything, being busy composing a guitar part or writing the lyrics for a song, or in other cases be the producer of the band. But in my case everything is predefined and my job here is to sing and do my job well. And I consider that as a positive point that changes the working method within the band, although it is always necessary to contribute ideas, and I seek that this vision of working collectively can be realized. I am very satisfied with what we have achieved with my bandmates, and I see these processes as a relaxation where you can enjoy the music. I consider Hooded as a band where you can work in a practical way where we focus on the creative and production aspect and make sure that everything goes on the right track. So all far from worrying is more about enjoying what you do. CR: Harri, what is your view of how the pandemic has forced the music industry to reinvent itself in early 2020?
HK: It's a sucks situation, and it has been very difficult to this day that many bands have a significant opportunity to play live, and that many festivals have been canceled. For example, in my case I have been waiting to see Judas Priest since last year and from the moment they announced the rescheduling I left my ticket insured for next year. As a fan I am disappointed that we wait another year to see them, and I consider that the same case is happening with other bands. I'm currently doing things with Hooded, especially with the promotion of the new album, and I know that this year there have been good releases, and this has partly helped people to make this problem of confinement less tolerable, so what remains for now it is to adapt to what comes later, to think positively and as a musician to be as creative as possible. Although the pandemic is doing great damage to the industry and to people's lifestyles, the change must sooner or later be assimilated and for many it is a situation that sucks anyway. That is my point of view and of course, I will hope to see Judas Priest again (laughs) CR: During this time of confinement, many people have been left without work and with little money, the digital platforms at a certain point helped the bands while people resumed their jobs and that they could get a job to buy CDS and Vinyl.
Piracy in recent months had a high demand that unfortunately for those who cannot buy material this is their "cheapest option" What do you think of this situation that has affected bands and labels during all these months? HK: Piracy has always been a problem, if you are a musician you want to get your money to make a living from your art, which for many is completely different. I work with underground music and I like to make music without compromise. I'm a bit used to the idea that I don't make a living out of music. Many would think that I make music for mere fashion and my answer would be a resounding no. Like the rest of the world, you need to pay the bills, and for that reason all this requires the support of the people so that they can buy your material. The industry at this time for a complicated moment especially for the manufacture of vinyl since for reasons that we all know, the production rate has decreased and consequently makes mass production of this format more expensive, adding to this the schedules in that the factories do their job, ridiculously all this happened to be done in 6 months and now it can be extended to two years, and generates a load of stress to the labels that need to have their catalogs updated including new releases and reissues. Unfortunately in recent years the reissues are of poor quality and they end up in stores and the printing work is as if it had been done by a clandestine label to give you an idea. At this point piracy has caused people to buy something of quality by mere fetish, especially vinyl, it is somewhat exaggerated to pay 50 euros for a reissue of an 80's album and that its sound sounds like shit, then all that I would stop at the flea market and there it is impossible to stop that. Some people prefer to buy digital music, so the platforms are good for that reason, and there are a lot of people who really want to buy things from the band through our platform at Bandcamp. Seeing that we have inventories to offer, the bands have the initiative to do the work themselves and that people pay the money without having to have an intermediary. CR: In recent years, many bands hold special celebrations to revisit live classical music albums.
In this case, Effigies of Evil turns its first 10 years in 2022. Are you for or against this type of celebration, or do you have plans to launch a special anniversary edition? HK: Actually, we are not against this kind of thing, last year for example Never Cross The Dead had a reissue through Hammerheart Records, the advantage there is that people can find these albums, so for the Labels that do this is a great job because they update the catalog of the bands with lots of improvements in sound or in notes, photos and things like that. So I consider official reissues to be a very good option for fans. CR: Has the band been contemplated soon as part of the promotion of the new album to present it in a streaming concert? Or are you of the opinion that the best thing is to wait for everything to normalize and play a concert in person ... comments ...
HK: We have many doubts about doing that kind of concert, and to be honest, we haven't had much live activity, we have been absent from the stage for three years. But we could play live shows in person in the next few years, but seeing the situation we have, all this has been left in a real uncertainty. The band lives by doing live shows, and it would be very rare to do something in streaming, as musicians that would be very questionable, and as musicians what inspires us the most is doing things live and enjoying the moment with the fans at a festival or in a concert hall. CR: Are you currently preparing tour plans soon or is the panorama is uncertain for Hooded? HK: We don't have anything on the agenda for now. As long as the pandemic is around, it is certain that we will not have concerts for now, so all we wait, and we cannot promise anything to the fans (laughs) CR: Harri, what message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview, and I want to thank you for taking the time this day for Conexion Rock Radio.
HK: It was a pleasure talking to you on this day Johonny, and I want to thank all the fans around the world, and those who support us from different continents. Here in Finland it's a beautiful summer here and we hope that all this improves, that the tours come back, but for now, be safe at home and enjoy the music that will soon be out for all of you! Again, thank you very much! CR: Harri, thanks for your time! Best of luck to you and your bandmates with this new album! In the same way to my dear Friends of Season Of Mist for making this talk possible with you, and we hope to speak again about another chapter of the great story that Hooded Menace makes with good music! Have a perfect day at home… Kiitos! HK: Kiitos! The same for you Johonny, a hug! Special thanks to the Season Of Mist press and promotion team for their help in making this interview possible, and to Harri Kuokkanen for time allotted on this conversation.
