IHSAHN A Tribute With Many Roots One of the most respected composers of the extreme scene worldwide is back! And that is a cause for celebration for their fans who receive with open arms in 2020 a new record production. On this occasion we established contact to the city of Telemark in Norway, the place of residence of our guest: IHSAHN whose real name is Vegard Sverre Tveitan, who shares with you all first-hand details of the release of his new EP called Telemark via Candlelight Records and Mnemosyne Productions, and that according to our guest, he will seek to experience releases of this format in this year, always maintaining that experimental air that has led to make this project on par with his main band such as Emperor. Without further ado ... we invite you to know this and much more in this interesting interview for all of you: Conexion Rock Radio: Ihsahn, greetings from Honduras, Central America, it´s a great honor to have you here in this interview to share with our audience in Latin America the news you have in 2020, welcome! Ihsahn: Hi! How are you! Thank you for having me here, and it will be a pleasure to talk with you and your audience in your region, by the way, the first time I speak with a Honduran media. CR: Thank you very much for your comments, this is part of our work in supporting the scene around the world, and especially for fans who want to be close to bands and artists.
Start this interview in congratulate you on the release of their new EP called Telemark via Candlelight Records, in same way with Mnemosyne Productions. What expectations do you have in this new chapter of your story? We certainly have an interesting EP that fans will enjoy! Ihsahn: Thank you, you know, I can say that I had a great time doing this EP. It was nice to concentrate on a much more limited performance, once I have been releasing full-length albums every two years since I was sixteen (laughs) I decided on this occasion to do completely different things, and I found myself opening some new opportunities creatively speaking, that I probably would not have imagined it in wanting to make a complete and very specific album at the same time, although I suppose that I am not ready expectations I just hope that people can enjoy it when they are going to tour the United States soon, as well as part of the project in That country will make some presentations that will be announced. CR: We know that the name of the EP refers to the city where you live, and the three songs are sung in Norwegian. What reasons motivated him to pay tribute to that interesting place there in his country? Ihsahn: As I mentioned earlier it´s a creative effort, I have done a lot in a relationship with my creative partner who is my wife (Ihriel), and she has challenged me for a while to do something that was not related to Black Metal, in addition to doing something within reach, and at the beginning of this process was very similar to my roots, and especially my cultural roots, doing this EP and putting the name of the city made sense in doing so and conceptualizing it within that place as is Telemark, which is where I grew up and basically went to live. Every time I walk on those streets it is like having an identity, I have always been related to my current stage with Emperor, and that is undeniable. At concerts every time they introduce us, the announcer says: From Telemark, Norway: Emperor So, it was the best decision to do this in my mother tongue and at the same time pay tribute to the place where I currently live. CR: Are Stridig and Nord provinces too? Ihsahn: No, Stridig means strident, and Nord is a reference for Nordic. CR: For the first time in his discography, it includes two versions: Rock And Roll Is Dead by Lenny Kravitz and Wrathchild by Iron Maiden.
Everyone wants to know if from now on you want to experiment with Covers for upcoming works? Ihsahn: This being such a special project and I wanted to go back to my roots if it made sense to do something with Iron Maiden that was a great influence for me and for many generations. And I wanted to do this respecting the nature of the 80s, because both songs are from bands that have made a classical school, and especially Warthchild, because I met the band in its era with Paul Di'Anno. All that motivated me when I was very young in making versions of other bands, and there is definitely something to learn from that. For that reason, I decided to include these versions in the EP, and I am planning to do another one soon. So, this can somehow influence the way I do the songs. CR: We all thought that you would follow Emperor's same pattern with your solo career, albums like The Adversary and AngL, gave us a nod to what you've done all these years, but you've given us a surprise when you release After.
¿Are you Looking for your sound to be more mainstream or radio friendly? Ihsahn: (laughs) No, not at all. I think that is what I have learned. I haven´t been able to do this for a long time to be immersed in various processes and know if people will like and not like it. It is absolutely impossible. Many have said that the first Emperor albums were brutal, and suddenly you appear in the same magazines along with the first Black Sabbath album as the most important, so you never know what I can trust. Here you must follow your heart and know how to take a wonderful trip that is to work with music, that the best thing you can do so that people sometimes think that you do strange experiments to impress or provoke, or anything else, is a I experiment only to keep myself excited and passionate about what I do and create scenarios to do that, I started everything at a very early age, and I have still continued on this route, and I see no reason to limit myself and make my work more boring, because I said that I would like to think that if I'm not excited to make music, I don't think people are excited to hear it, they mentioned the first two albums, and you wonder: how bad were they? That is why I told the label: the first album that comes out we will see what happens there, and everything started well but in an unexpected way, the second and third album arrived, with it the concerts, and all this was a process to follow go ahead and innovate more things. CR: What is your point of view on the change you have made in all these years with your discography with progressive metal albums?
Personal Comment: Jørgen Munkeby has done an excellent job of bringing the saxophone sound to his albums. What bands or musicians influenced you to take this path? Ihsahn: I think this is very complex, the reason was that I really don't know much about Jazz, but I thought I should listen to some albums that was so epic instrumental music, so I always imagined that that was a lot of landscaping, so when I started to experience and felt that there was nothing of conceptual relations, and I thought that this would not be a sign of life, so I decided to implement changes in my musical patterns and by coincidence in one of my trips to France that I met a fellow musician, also from Norway and I played Jazz. I didn't know anyone who played the saxophone, so I called someone to help me play the keyboards, and I asked him: do you know anyone who plays Saxophone? And Jørgen Munkeby's name came out, and he has done an excellent job. Jørgen currently plays keyboards in Emperor, so I think his talent and collaboration on albums has been remarkable. CR: Are you proud of everything you've done in your solo career to this day?
Personal comment, in your discography there are very interesting works and it is a very favorable point as a musician. Are you looking to experience new sounds in the next albums? Is there any formula to make excellent works? Ihsahn: Thank you very much, that is very kind of you and I, since I have this immense privilege, have been allowed to do this to live. You know that I can devote all my time to work to make music and I love it. I have worked with music since I was very young, and I said that the only general rule in music is to try to keep it in the personal line because if I would stop I would be thinking that I am repeating something of the past, and I said it will not be exciting, and They will not find it meaningful. Logically, the longer you are at this point you will have more music. I have the opportunity to do this, because if you stop you never reach that goal, because every time you are more aware of what you do or not, that will reflect your ability, and you seek to be better at everything. That is what it is about. CR: We know that you are preparing a new EP in 2020, do you see this idea attractive instead of making an album? Or are you looking to make several EPs form an album as a puzzle?
Ihsahn: I don't really want to market EP in parts to do something like this, these productions go separately, it is a reason to do these projects and return to my roots especially because of the great differences of setting aside guitar riffs or the guttural screams to focus on a cleaner sound in the style of classic rock bands. It has worked in many ways with a direct approach and the opposite, looking at the end that everything is balanced. For example, Telemark brings folk elements from Norway, and I am starting to work on new ideas of what will be the next EP. I would probably never explore that music, I would never write something just for now, being a band of five members there are many ideas in the atmosphere that will be of much use, I almost finished recording it and this opens up all the creative possibilities that we would probably be ready to make an album Complete and expand my musical horizon, with luck and experiences we have everything to contribute ideas and concepts for an upcoming album. CR: A quick parenthesis: Everyone wonders if we will have an Emperor album, or do you think your solo project is more a priority?
Ihsahn: It's a question that I receive quite frequently. It is a great compliment that people have such a strong and friendly connection to Emperor's music and want more of that, but at the same time I think that from my perspective and I can only speak for myself, I could not see what work of Emperor would satisfy that need, because if it were to look back on the whole story that has been done, it is something that makes us proud. If you listen to my music and I listen to the cycle with what I did in the past I moved in separate directions and suddenly fall into a point where you find yourself playing several instruments to make new music now, now people want us to continue everything that where we left it, but my vision is to make music with a current focus, but many might think that we would be falling into the error of copying what you did in the past and trying to be teenagers again, some Black Metal band did this for those commercial reasons why I'm sure we could make a lot of money and do it on those terms, and we did it for all these other reasons, that's one reason why we never compromise people, they trust Emperor, and we make music by conviction and not by commitment. CR: It is an interesting appreciation on your part, for that reason many fans around the world look at you with a lot of respect and admiration not only with your main band, but now on this page as a soloist that you have approached as a challenge to be a better composer . Ihsahn: I think that for me the differences are better from each other and are noticeable to the eye, but for me personally I think it is a very liberating feeling to be able to do if I want to create something for a band I do. But if you are in the band, you know that you must have several elements: a saxophonist or a Jazz drummer, there is a more open criterion for me creatively, and that is part of the emotion that keeps me going. He loves me so much and it is a challenge to work within the limitations of being in a group and experiencing things different from what you usually you carry all the time. CR: Will the fans of Central and Latin America have the opportunity to see you in concert?
Ihsahn: Not yet, but I hope to take my solo proposal later. With Emperor we will have a special tour revisiting the Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk and other classics of the discography of the band, many fans and especially the old school will be happy to see us again. CR: What message do you want to send to those who read us in this interview and thank you for answering these questions on Conexion Rock Radio?
Ihsahn: Thanks to you and your readers and listeners for the interest of knowing more about my plans for this year. You know, we are aware that we have many real fans and friends in your continent, who want to see us, hopefully the conditions and logistics especially for Central America are favorable to have a great time with all of you. We really want to share that experience and that you know my new music too, which is to your liking, I am very grateful and expect new news soon. CR: Ihsahn, thank you for your time, we wish you the best with this EP and we hope to talk to you again in the future. The best for you in 2020! Ihsahn: Thanks to you Johonny and your followers on Conexion Rock Radio, a hug for everyone!
