KING´S X
Además de otros puntos fuertes como Let it Rain, Give It Up (Chris Cornell y Jimmy Hendrix estarían orgullosos de este track), Swipe Up, Holidays, and Every Everywhere

KING´S X
Three Elements: One Force Conexión Rock Radio in its international interviews brings you the history and the promising future of one of the bands that for more than 4 decades has offered its fans around the world releases that have earned a place in time and that at the same time they became classics and references in a history that has been written in golden letters. Our contact this time is to the United States, where we talked with our guest: Doug Pinnick, Bass and Vocals of the band KING'S X, who in 2022 will present us with their new album, the first in almost a decade and a half, and which has been by name Three Sides Of One, which is released through the label Inside Out Music. King's X was founded in 1979, and their first release was 1983's Sneak Preview, but they would gain international recognition with their next work called Out of the Silent Planet, from there the true history of the band would start from a zero point passing for great moments in his career, tours and interesting experimentations in his sound. Currently the band is made up of Doug Pinnick- Bass and Vocals, Jerry Gaskill- Drums and Vocals, and Ty Tabor- Guitars and Vocals. Enjoy this interview dedicated to King's X fans, you will learn interesting aspects of their discography, the recording process of this new album, alternative projects, and a challenge that endangered the existence of the band, but thanks to friendship decided to overcome every obstacle and show the world that they will be in force as long as life allows them to share their talent because their music is the result of Three Elements: One Force Conexion Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Doug, it is a great honor to have you here starting our 13th anniversary celebration as a means of communication for our region and the rest of the world where we will share with King's X fans around the world the important news that the band this year, welcome! Doug Pinnick: Hi Johonny, nice to be here with you, and congratulations on your anniversary this month Rock Connection and the work you do for the community around the world. CR: Thanks Doug, and how do you feel about playing again both in concerts and in festivals after these two and a half years of hiatus caused by this pandemic?
DP: All this that has happened during all this time was difficult, returning to the tours is like riding a bicycle again, after not exercising it is logical that you wobble a little, but after these two and a half years we needed prepare ourselves, and this comeback I compare to doing extensive exercise, participating, and winning a marathon. CR: Let's talk about Three Sides of One, album number thirteen in the band's discography that was released last September 2 through Inside Out Music, by the way, congratulations on this album that will be acclaimed by fans and critics because the thirteen will be a lucky number for the band for the simple reason that the Kings Are Back, what expectations do you have with this great album?
DP: We just wanted to make a record that was fun and we felt like it was time to make a record for the people because we hadn't offered anything new in 14 years, and we finally did. We had several problems to be able to make a project a reality, but after many efforts this album is now something real so that everyone can enjoy the songs that we have prepared for this occasion. CR: That's good to know that people will welcome with open arms, and that this will be one of the best releases in this final part of 2022 Doug, as you mentioned before, this new album breaks a silence of fourteen years since the release from XV in 2008, we know that you and Jerry have had health problems in recent years, plus the three of you had side projects. How do you feel about coming back with an album after a long time? DP: It's like meeting an old friend again after a long time without hearing from him, in the process of creating and composing this album we had fun and had the creative freedom at the individual level to contribute our ideas, there were no egos, no fights. We were there in the studio, just cheering each other on to do our best, it was fun this whole experience, and all three of us loved that. CR: During this time of lockdown, did this affect you in some way without being able to do anything at home, or did you patiently wait for the right moment to come back with something new for the fans?
How has the pandemic influenced the writing process for the new album? DP: Let me tell you, Johonny, the album was complete before the pandemic left us all cooped up in our homes, which is why the mixing process had to be stopped abruptly. When things got better over the months, we picked things up again and were able to complete everything, so during the emergency we weren't rushed or pressured to get everything ready. CR: This new album has an interesting analogy: three minds, three worlds and three musicians who focus their talent to make this release a single force of nature.
What impressions do you have of the work that Michael Parnin did in the studio? DP: With Michael I have a great concept of his work, I have had the opportunity to join forces in the production process of my tribute album to Hendrix, and he gave me a space in his house to rest. When I first moved to California to look for a place to live I was in his studio and during the six months of the tribute process I had to sleep on the floor, and I see Michael as a great friend and that he has worked with great musicians who I could never imagine, and he's really good at what he does, plus the experience of working with the best has made him decide to have him work on our new album. I think he gave his best, and I don't think any other producer has been able to make a record like this, and only Michael accepted the challenge and succeeded. CR: On this new album there are highlights like Take the Time and Festival, that's where Jerry and Ty sing there, and for the listener it will be a pleasant surprise. Plus, other highlights like Let it Rain, Give It Up (Chris Cornell and Jimmy Hendrix would be proud of this track), Swipe Up, Holidays, and Every Everywhere
We know that you three contributed lyrics and music in each of the songs, is it the first time that the 3 of you sing, or did you experience this for previous works? DP: First of all, thanks for the praise on Give It Up, the truth is I only made a bass riff where I can enjoy and sing at the same time, now, on the other hand, the great influence that Jimmy Hendrix has had on music is undeniable. and that has helped me mold a style between Soul and Stoner, but when I wrote that song in particular I did not think of something that was short and happy, I just told myself when I wrote it that I wanted to do something that was fast, that you could dance and in the end it was fun, especially in the changes of rhythm in this Give It Up. Regarding the contributions of Jerry and Ty, as you know, when you are the leader of a band, you literally take care of everything, but the three of us here have broken that mold years ago, there are always compositions where we all sit down both in music and in lyrics, for example in this new album Ty has the leading role in Take The Time, while Jerry would do his thing with Festival, so when we see the ideas we shape the harmony, the rest is history. CR: Forty-three years of career, the same tres amigos, side projects and great albums that are now classics, and your voice is in perfect shape even though you are currently seventy-two years old, how do you feel to witness good things, tours, and albums that are important testimony in the history of King's X?
DP: I see all this as a great adventure, living the good and the bad has been a great experience in life and I consider that my story with King's X continues there and I see that it is not going to end, and you know Johonny, It's something I've always done when I entered the world of music, to earn a living, that's what someone would want, to find something in which you can feel comfortable and happy with what you do, and get paid for it. That's what I've done for most of my life, and making a living from this is getting up every day and smiling. CR: And we look forward to more from King's X in the years to come Doug, you are a much-loved band in various countries around the world, and now you are smiling with this new album that is doing justice to your legacy.
A few days ago Ted Kirkpatrick of the band Tourniquet passed away, we know that you have collaborated with him several times, for example, in the tribute to Black Sabbath and Onward to Freedom, curiously Tourniquet did a cover of Dogman for The Mother of All Tribute Albums that it was released in 1998. What impressions have you had of this particular version? DP: It was very difficult to assimilate news like that, the world has lost a great musician who has contributed his life and his talent, like many I regret that Ted is no longer with us. On the other hand, I have felt flattered that a band like Tourniquet revisits one of our songs, and especially this one that for many considers that through it they have discovered us. With Ted I carry the best memories and experiences of his projects with his band and as a soloist. Although we have had super busy schedules, we have known how to allocate our times to bring together talent through music and offer people something special. CR: Ted will definitely leave a legacy for future generations to appreciate his art from the contributions you have given at some points in his career. As you know in recent years many bands celebrate records that are considered classics, in the case of King's X the self-titled album turns thirty in 2022, who does not remember tracks like Prisoner, Black Flag, Lost in Germany, The World Around Me or Silent Wind to name a few examples.
Many might think that the band may revisit it along with the new album on this tour, or have you considered releasing an anniversary edition with bonus material at this point, what do you think about that? DP: Right now, we don't have any plans for the simple reason that we don't own the rights to the album, and the Atlantic label handles part of our catalogue, so they're the ones who would ultimately make the decision to do a reissue or something special. With that stuff, unfortunately labels don't value bands these days and focus on the money-making aspect of music and not value talent. In our case we will hope to be able to recover our catalogue, win our rights to those songs and with the masters we will be able to do something for the fans in the future. CR: For the new generations of bands Doug, they looks at King's X as an influence, and the message is one of gratitude for the music that has served them as a model to follow through the years. Comments...
DP: When I hear expressions like that, Johonny, it has made me smile. It makes me feel good to be able to listen to people who, thanks to our music, have been able to overcome their fears and limitations. For the band, and for me especially, these compliments towards the legacy of King's X make me feel proud of what we have done and happy that they find that inspiration in what we have done during all these years. CR: Now that the album is available in physical stores and digital platforms, do you have plans for tours in the coming weeks?
DP: Definitely. We will go on tour, for now we do not have anything confirmed in our schedules, so our team is currently looking for places where we can present the album. It will take a little time, but once everything is defined, we will see where this new adventure takes us. CR: Many have wondered if King's X is a Christian band, or have they addressed many more personal and real points of view through their songs? DP: On that point, Johnny, we were never a Christian band, and we respect people's criteria and beliefs about religions. Jesus has done great things, as has Gandhi, and there are books that expose various aspects of life and apply them to oneself. It's like a kind of conversation with someone you know, and when we need someone to take care of us from fear, you look at them as your saviors, because you know their feelings and their way of thinking. We and in my case see that as a mix between the spiritual and the atheist in people's lives. CR: At the end of this interview Doug, what message do you want to send to all the people who have taken a little of their time to read this report, and thank you very much for this pleasant conversation back home for Conexión Rock Radio
DP: First of all, thanks to you, Johonny, for this very good conversation on this day, and to the people who follow us now, and who have followed us for years, I express my gratitude, I hope you enjoy the new album, and we hope to see you soon in our concerts to sing with all of you of our songs. Special thanks to Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey of the Looters press and promotion team for their help with this interview, and to Doug Pinnick for spending time from home.
