¿Llegaste a conocer a Cliff?

LEATHER
The Chosen Take Back Control If you are one of those who like Heavy Metal with life and fantasy themes strongly inspired by Ronnie James Dio, we invite you to meet and listen to the following artist that we present in our international interviews on Conexión Rock Radio. Our tour around the world takes us to the United States, and that is where our guest Catherine Leone, better known as Leather Leone, receives us at her home to talk about the new album by her band Leather, called We Are The Chosen, which came out for sale on November 25, 2022 through Steamhammer, and which is the third work in his extensive discography that he shares with his other project called Chastain. The lineup, in addition to Leather Leone as Vocalist, is complemented by Thiago Velasquez- Bass, Braulio Azambuja- Drums, Vinnie Tex and Marcel "Daemon" Ross- Guitars. We talked about this new album, its concept, the composition and recording process that the band would carry out in the pandemic and in addition to a retrospective in a career that spans four decades that consecrate it as one of the pioneers of metal on the world scene, and of as this warrior calls on the world to rise up after this pandemic that has plagued the world since 2020, and now in this new adventure she invites us to join her legions because in 2022... the chosen take back control. Conexión Rock Radio: Good afternoon from Honduras Leather, thank you for accepting our invitation, it is a great honor to have you here and talk to our readers about the important news you have this year, welcome!
Leather Leone: Thank you Johonny, it's the first time I've spoken with a journalist from your country, and I send greetings to all the people in Latin America who hope to see you soon in your countries. CR: Thanks Leather! How has it been for you to return to the stages and concerts after these two and a half years of forced absence?
Leather: The truth feels amazing. We had prepared ourselves for these months and waiting for everything to return to normal, it was sitting patiently to listen to the balloon explode and we are happy to play again for the people and survive in the face of this great problem. CR: In addition to having this good news, we have a new album called We Are the Chosen, the third work in your discography and it came out on November 25 through Steamhammer, by the way, congratulations with this release It´s a fact that you will conquer new fans around the world.
Do you have expectations or are you one of the people who expect people's reactions when listening to it in person and on platforms? Leather: I feel very blessed in my life. Fans all over the world have really liked this new album, and I am very touched by the great feedback we have had on social media. This has been phenomenal and motivating as well as having an overwhelming response from everyone. This is really good and it is the beginning of very good things that we want to do soon. CR: Has this confinement affected you in these two and a half years? Or did you patiently wait for the right moment to come back with something new for the fans?
How has the pandemic influenced the writing and composition for We Are The Chosen? Leather: Everything was fine for me at home because my musical landscape changed and I was looking forward to touring and working with my team in various countries. I was in constant communication with everyone until the pandemic hit us in 2020, so because of that I had time to do new things and in lockdown I had to learn to compose and write music, which was a real challenge for me and I was very impatient to do new things, but I knew we had time to do something without rushing, it was a good sign that everything was fine and that's how the songs took shape to appear on this record. For this new album I had to try different things, despite not being a patient person everything worked out for our benefit. CR: What does Leather offer us with this album that has excellent songs, is it conceptual? Because of the title of the album and everything that has happened in the world, it could be interpreted that we survived and that we are the chosen ones. Leather: (laughs) It was not exactly what I would think, but We Are The Chosen is a message that we must unite the family in these troubled times, we are a family and we have that blessing that we love this type of music we can carry on, stay strong and standing in the face of this pandemic. I have admired and lived by the inspiration of Ronnie James Dio and through his legacy he taught us that we are a family, and in itself it is a concept album in which he talks about my anger, about how I have lost people who since 2019 have worked and they have been part of my environment, I was angry with everything, and I want to channel all that in a positive way. All this is reflected in the track We Take Back Control where I express the disappointment of how these things have happened, but with the passage of time I have regained control of everything to be a more confident person. CR: Your impressions on the production that you and Vinicius Soares Teixeira (Vinnie Tex) have given to this album in conjunction with the Wiesławski brothers in the mix and mastering, I will tell you that the production is one of the most outstanding points of This disc
Leather: Thank you very much for your comment, I really appreciate it. This album for many could consider it perfect, I could consider it as the album that had a greater focus on my voice and instruments, it sounds different compared to the other albums I released in the past. That goes to show one thing that this could define it as the best work I've done at this stage of my career. Working with the Wiesławski brothers was a process of perfection from start to finish where we took advantage of all possible options. Both have a clear vision about metal and always work in their studio with many bands like Vader or extreme ones like Behemoth. So as we took advantage of the time between writing and writing the songs we gave them a more melodic approach so that my voice had more capabilities in the same way Vinnie has a big part of the credit for making this a success. We were all involved in following up on the album until everything was completed, and listening to the final sessions we all concluded that all the time and resources invested had a perfect result. CR: Something curious here is that the current lineup all the musicians are Brazilian, except you who currently live in the United States.
What motivated you to have these musicians in the band? Do you think there is more talent in people from Latin countries like Brazil? Leather: Yes. Talking about the talent of my Brazilian bandmates is totally crazy. I remember the 2014 tours and I started working with other people and the level of talent they have has blown my mind, they play anything and they have gained the respect of many and they have a lot of attitude to get things done, especially with the last few tours. in the United States before the pandemic hit the world. One of the first musicians to join is Braulio Azambuja who plays the Drums, then Vinnie. The rest with the passage of time would take their place in the band. Vinnie has told me that the band has gone to another level in terms of talent. And I'm proud to have them in my band, and I repeat, traveling with them on the road and playing for people is a crazy but rewarding experience. CR: It's very interesting to know that there has been excellent chemistry with that lineup.
Almost forty years of career, parallel projects and great albums that are already classics, and your voice is in perfect shape even though you are sixty-three years old, and everyone looks at you as one of the pioneering women of metal in the United States, besides to be admired for your beauty, how do you feel to witness all these important moments that you have lived in all these years? Leather: Thank you for your comments towards what I have done in my singing career. You know, I've worked very hard to get here and I don't wish to overreact, but I've done my best with my vocal ranges, since my voice has been resting for 25 years. I had to stop in the 90's, I was brutalizing my voice and I feel blessed that I didn't take my voice to extremes or lose it forever. It's a gift that the gods have given me, and in 2011 I had to start everything from scratch, exercise my voice, exercise, go to the studios and find out if everything was fine or not and then solve those points later, I drink a lot of water and I do cardio, I train my voice every day and after 25 years I feel proud to have my voice and give my best effort for people who appreciate my work. CR: The most gratifying thing about all this Leather is that people have welcomed this new album with open arms to say “Our Queen Is Back!”
Many have wondered in the future have you contemplated making a live or acoustic album. I don't know if you have had this type of proposals or requests on your social networks? Leather: I have seriously thought about whether or not to do this type of project for We Are The Chosen, but I feel worried about it since my way of singing would not fit in such a format, I would not imagine singing with a piano at the same time ( laughs) I am a woman with a strong and high-pitched voice, and with what I do I am in a perfect comfort zone. CR: As we mentioned before, by 2024 you will celebrate 40 years of career in both Chastain, Leather and Leather Leone, do you plan to do a world tour celebrating this moment and visiting countries where you would play for the first time? Leather: I would very much love to do a joint celebration with all the bands, and we are seeing if it will be possible to do that. There are many countries that we want to play and we know that there are people who know of our existence, it would be a fascinating experience to meet new people and enjoy our music. We ask promoters and festival owners to take us into account to offer our proposal to people, since we are very anxious to go on tour and we seek to break that silence after this situation that has distanced us all. I will be very grateful from the bottom of my heart if a promoter calls us or writes to us on our networks, we will be honored to visit them and give our best on stage. CR: I am curious about this interview, we know that you were a guest on the album Scratch and Scream by the band Trauma in 1984, despite the fact that Cliff Burton was already in Metallica in those days, how was the contact between you and the band? Did you get to meet Cliff?
Leather: It was a fun experience that I had when I had to collaborate in those days with Trauma, Cliff was already in Metallica and unfortunately I couldn't meet him, but his colleagues told me things about his work and wished him the best of luck, who knew that Cliff would make history with them. Regarding my participation in his debut album, Mike Varney, who owns the Shrapnel Records label, invited me. All of that was a mystery and I was able to talk to my friend Donny Hillier (Trauma Vocalist who passed away in 2020) but he had never heard of his music. For me being with them in the studio was similar to being in a small family, and they were able to make their career starting out in that California scene in the early 80's. CR: Now with the album on the streets Leather, what's next now? Will you seek to focus on giving it more promotion or will you work with your agents to prepare a tour for 2023?
Leather: My goal is to go on tour, every day I wake up and look for the right people who can open the way for me and reach many people in various countries Johonny. It is a point that I am trying to resolve and thus reach other places. For now we recorded the video for the track We Are The Chosen in Brazil and we have had a great response from people within a few days of having released it, so we hope to be on the road by 2023 because that will be our main objective: tours, tours and more tours CR: At the end of this interview, what message do you want to send to our readers around the world who have enjoyed this interview, and thanks to you Leather for the time you have given to make this conversation possible.
Leather: I want to say thank you to the people who have supported me early in my career since the early 80's and believed in me, I love you! I invite you to listen to the new material, that this album is for all of you and that we do not take this new effort lightly to offer something with a lot of strength and energy, I hope to see you in concerts in 2023, and I send you a hug from home ! May Dio´s blessing be upon you all and take care! Special thanks to Björn von Oettingen of the Steamhammer Press and Promotion Team for his help in making this interview possible, and to Leather Leone for the time she gave at home.
