LORDI

LORDI
The Perfect Script for a Perfect Album Conexión Rock Radio in its international interviews brings again a new conversation with an artist who for three decades has offered interesting albums to his fans around the world, and which over time have become classics, and now in 2023 returns to the action with another job that will be another important moment in his career. On this occasion we came to Finland, and there we talked with Tomi Petteri Putaansuu, better known as Mr. Lordi, the mastermind behind LORDI, and who presented us with his new album called Screem Writers Guild, which was released on the 31st of March 2023, and that marks a new page in his history, this work being his debut with the Atomic Fire Records label. Mr. Lordi shares with all of you about the concept that the band offers us with this new album and the challenge they have set themselves by launching the Lordiversity project in 2021, offering fans a varied and different universe through 7 albums that literally They were edited continuously. Lordi's current lineup is complemented by Mana- Drums, Hella- Keyboards, Hiisi- Bass, and the new addition is represented by Kone on guitars. We invite you to come and read this pleasant chat with Mr. Lordi, and learn more about his career, curiosities, plans for the future, and at the same time being part of the perfect script for a perfect album. Conexión Rock Radio: Good morning from Honduras Mr. Lordi, thank you for accepting our invitation for this interview, and it is an honor to echo Lordi's fans in Latin America and the rest of the world about the news you bring this year, welcome Mr. Lordi: Good afternoon from Finland Johonny, I will tell you that it is my first time that I speak with someone from Honduras, and here I am ready for your questions and an interesting time with your readers there in Central and Latin America. Thank you very much for your interest in getting closer to the band! CR: Three years have passed since the pandemic hit the world in 2020, and concerts and festivals progressively resumed normality. How does the band feel about meeting their fans again after many months of confinement and restrictions?
Mr. Lordi: Well there are various points of view from both the fan and the band. If you ask me, I would tell you that this situation derived from the pandemic and the mandatory confinement was the best time compositionally speaking. I am very aware that there is a minority that will say that due to this type of circumstances, artists can offer new things for a long period of time, and speaking about the production of an album implies many years to achieve the goal. In my case it was the best moment, we enjoyed everything we experienced in the process and I consider that thanks to that I became a very creative person, and that the rest of the band had a very productive attitude, for that reason we released seven albums of simultaneously, and that for anyone a project of these characteristics would have been impossible, or it would be crazy that it would never see the light, because we could not go out or perform live, we decided to put 99.9% of our compositional effort into making something new , without pressure and without falling into a routine of boredom in our homes. We knew that playing sooner or later would be a necessary evil, but the best thing for all of us was to focus all our energy preparing fresh ideas in the studio. Others were afraid of getting sick or dying and preferred to wait for everything with their arms folded, while in the studio we all had fun, making time fair for everyone and preventing the distance factor from affecting the whole process once it started, once in the end. reviewed everything with the necessary corrections, everyone in the band gave a sign of approval that everything turned out very well in the end. CR: Let's talk about Screem Writers Guild, the band's new album that was released on March 31 through Atomic Fire Records, what impressions do you have of the people who have enjoyed this material both physically and digitally?
Mr. Lordi: It's a very typical question in itself, but I'll answer it, every album we've done over the years we look at as the best at the time, and for me from my personal point of view I honestly feel like this new job is the most personal for everyone and with that feeling I can feel at peace with myself. I really don't care what some people think about it, for some this may be our best album, for others it wouldn't be, and we'll let people all over the world have their say on what we've done, and it'll be interesting to see there. to many who have this album in their homes and who can enjoy it as many times as necessary, in the same way in digital where we know that there is more reach for more people in far away points around the world. CR: Something that came as a surprise to the fans was the release of the Lordiversity boxset in 2021. We want to know what motivated you to release 7 albums almost simultaneously?
Mr. Lordi: The thing was that we wanted to release 7 albums but the label was demanding us to do 10, and with such an amount for a project it made us feel uncomfortable in the end, so we decided to do all 7 albums simultaneously in a process that It lasted approximately nine months, and we took care of the entire mixing and mastering process. There was a lot of tension between the label and the record company because they were demanding 10 albums from us, the reason was simple: they gave us a very limited budget and based on what they gave us, we ended up recording only 7 albums, and we were able to do this in record time. . Now people have been telling us how the hell did we record a lot of songs and put all of that into a boxset. With that point resolved, the next step was to record a new album, and as I mentioned before, we were at a time where we were very creative and productive despite the circumstances that the world was experiencing at that time, taking advantage of the fact that no one was touring, we decided to enter the studio, with all the momentum we had at hand, we could have made two albums in one year, an example is Kiss that released two records in one year and they had a big contract to make that possible, and if we apply this over time present would be a matter of a lot of pressure at the compositional level to offer something of quality to the people, and many even complained because the bands offered more of a quantitative product than a qualitative one, that is reverend stupidity, and that can be noticed at first glance and suddenly they give them a repeated product and in this way they see the idiot face of people deceiving them with a product that is not good, that is where practice makes champion bands and in this way avoid those mistakes. When you do something new for people, bands or artists are like doctors in hospitals where they check up or diagnose people to find out what they have or what they need, that way you can know what kind of experience can be offered to them. once you have something recorded in the studio and ready to be released. CR: We know that this new album is a tribute to the Hollywood horror classics in their golden age, and above all because of your love for this type of film. There are great moments like Dead Again Jayne, Inhumanoid, Thing in the Cage (there is some reference to Houdini's escapism in the cage), The Bride, Lucyfer Prime Evil, Lycantropical Island, In the Castle of Dracoolove, and End Credits.
From the title, people might imagine that this album is like an imaginary script from Mr. Lordi's very personal vision, what details can you share with us? Mr. Lordi: About The Cage and Houndini not really, although there may be loose references to that particular song. All of this was the idea of Tracy Lipp, who also has the credit of being the lyricist, and is directly based on the old circus shows where freaks were presented and that's where we reflect Lordi's essence of how those freaks or those caged monsters that for some they are dangerous behind their disguises there are things that are completely different, and this between the lines is a nod to us as a band of how beauty exists behind those creatures. There are many interpretations that can be subject to the song, and it will be a mere decision of the fans to decipher the message behind it all. About what you mention about a tribute to classic horror movies, you are absolutely right on that point. We decided to compose this record within the perfect standards for a Lordi album, we already have many records in our career and we had no intention of doing something heavy or something thrash. We wanted the classic sound of our first albums, that was like going back to our roots, this is 100% Lordi in all aspects, and that is what we are offering this opportunity to fans all over the world. We just gave it what the fans want, which is why we have this new release on our hands. CR: This is Kone's debut as a guitarist, what impressions do you have of the contributions he has given in this new page of the band's history?
Mr. Lordi: The arrival of Kone has literally changed the entire working chemistry within the band. Even though I'm the only one who has stayed from the beginning, various musicians have passed on various records and in different timelines. He has contributed a lot musically speaking, and that is reflected in the changes that we present with the new album, I can say from my very personal point that Kone is a different guitarist, but he is also a professional in what he does. Many people could say that he is like an Ace Frehley, but I see him as a Bruce Kulick, his way of playing the guitar is quite technical, and I think that he is the best thing that has happened to the band in these 30 years of history. CR: Many think that Lordi has been an influence for another band like GWAR to see you as a role model for their wardrobe, what do you think of this?
Mr. Lordi: This is something that happens very occasionally, and that could be sort of an isolated case, especially if it comes from America. With this I must tell you that GWAR was never popular in Europe and GWAR has never had an influence related to the legacy that Lordi has made during all these years. In an interview in 2008 we were asked about them, we had to answer consciously that we didn't know anything about them. We had to investigate about them, and the first thing we were able to find out through the internet is that they dressed as monsters. Although we must admit that his proposal is completely different from ours to the point that his staging is silly and fun, while Lordi seeks to be more realistic like the monsters that appear in the movies. We respect GWAR for what they do with their music, although it's still amusing to this day to be compared to Lordi in both music and costumes. The same case happens with bands like Kiss, Twisted Sister, W.A.S.P., Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie that there are similarities with what they do in their presentations. GWAR is very popular in America, but in Europe they have not had a deserved luck. 10 or 15 years ago I had the opportunity to talk with Oderus Urungus, GWAR's Vocalist, sadly he passed away a few years ago and I noticed that he had great intentions that GWAR and Lordi work together on a tour first in the United States and then for various points from Europe, making each show as fun as possible, and even making both bands fight. But we felt that it was probably not going to work since the fact that both bands had their monster costumes, some might say that they are cute monsters and others will say that they are creatures of darkness (laughs), in the end we declined the idea and New attempts were given, although we thought it was a perfect idea for us, it was definitely not going to work.
CR: Since you are a movie lover, which director would you like to work with on a special project, either because of your hobby or because you could get the band involved, I have a feeling you and Rob Zombie could do something interesting there.
Mr. Lordi: I declare myself a great fan of the work that Rob has done during all these years both as a soloist and with White Zombie and especially of his film projects. I don't have his contact and would like to work with him in the not too distant future. I remember something very funny that happened years ago when Rob and White Zombie were breaking up and later he would start his solo career with that great album Hellbilly Deluxe (1998) and he released that great video called Dragula, and I said “Oh, no. !” because on the other side of the planet I was starting to shape Lordi in that precise year and I had the same look that he had when he released that album and I said that "we had the same fucking look" and the best thing for me was to get rid of the idea and change appearance and yell "damn!", and well, the rest is for history (laughs) CR: What perspective do you have of these thirty-two years of career with Lordi, many albums released, tours around the world and lineup changes that have left their contributions from that Get Heavy of 2002 to today?
Mr. Lordi: I could consider myself a happy person, but also a lucky bastard, since I can really make a living from things that I've been doing for all these years, seeing how many albums you've released, how many tours you've done, or how many people you have touched in your entire life. For some they may be values for a story, but in my case it could be irrelevant, and because I say this, the simple reason is that you can feel proud of everything you have done and of what you are doing now, and making others happy. people through your work and value it over time there is the true gain from your effort. CR: With Screem Writers Guild the band debuts on Atomic Fire Records, how do you feel about being part of this label that now supports you in this part of Lordi's history?
Mr. Lordi: I can tell you that things with the record company and its staff are very good. We are testing with this new album and with the door open so that we can continue working with them in the coming years. So we have a very good working relationship with his staff, and we hope to keep that chemistry going for more albums to come. CR: With the Lordiversity project, you had planned to celebrate your thirtieth birthday, do we imagine that the pandemic made you change your plans, or did you have the opportunity to celebrate with the fans beforehand?
Mr. Lordi: With Lordiversity we had the opportunity last fall to offer this material live in various countries to a large number of people. Now with Screem Writers Guild we have several dates announced and we will share paths with Sabaton and Baby Metal in various parts of Europe, and we hope to reach the largest possible audience. Now, as far as anniversaries are concerned, we have plans for 2024 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Monsterican Dream, which is our second album, and we hope to be able to revisit it live and combine it with a setlist so that the occasion is special and memorable for everyone. CR: Now with the album on the streets, what's next for Lordi in the remainder of 2023? Mr. Lordi: For now we will be on tour as I told you before. We will be on the road until the end of May, and from then on we will be participating in various festivals throughout the summer and fall. It would be too early to reveal surprises, but we extend an invitation to all fans to keep an eye on our networks so they can find out what we have for all of you in the coming months. CR: At the end of this interview Mr. Lordi, what message do you want to send to the people who have enjoyed this reading with you, thanks again for the time granted to Conexión Rock Radio, it was a great honor, we wish you the best on these next tours, and we look forward to chatting with you later.
Mr. Lordi: The same to you Johonny, thank you very much, and it was a great pleasure talking to someone from Honduras, it's my first time talking to someone from a country like yours, so in a literal sense I've lost my virginity in this interview (laughs), a hug from Finland, and we hope to see you all on tour later, and thanks for the support you are giving us with this new album, this is for you. Special thanks to Mr. Lordi for the time granted on this occasion, and to Barbara Francone of Atomic Fire Records Promotion and Press for making this conversation possible.
