A Magical Rain Made Song Conexión Rock Radio begins 2024 with an interesting band that returns to the fray with new album production, and for those who like hard rock with progressive overtones this is our recommendation for this month of January. We establish contact to Birmingham, United Kingdom with our guests in report: Bob Catley and Lee Morris, Vocals and Drums respectively of the band Magnum, who in 2024 return to the fray with their 23rd album called Here Comes The Rain, which will be released on January 12 via Steamhammer and which marks the triumphant return of Magnum after their last release The Monster Road released in 2022, and this new work is expected to continue the musical tradition of the band, offering a unique combination of poetic lyrics, rich musical arrangements and the distinctive voice of his Catley and the unique talent of his bandmates, leaving evidence that they remain current within the taste of his fans around the world. His cover letter called Blue Tango that came out a few weeks ago has generated great enthusiasm among his fans, advancing a work with the energy and creativity characteristic of Magnum, and that many are currently in anticipation of the state of health of their guitarist and composer Tony Clarkin, and that currently the band has had to suspend all activity so that Clarkin can recover and in this way Magnum returns to the stage with a bang. The current incarnation of Magnum consists of Bob Catley on Vocals, Tony Clarkin on Guitars, Lee Morris on Drums, Rick Benton on Keyboards, and Dennis Ward on Bass. With a loyal fan base that has followed the band over the years, Here Comes The Rain is expected to be well received by both the band's fans and rock lovers in general. Critics have also shown interest in the musical direction this new album could take, highlighting Magnum's consistency and artistic evolution over time. Here Comes The Rain represents an exciting chapter in Magnum's musical journey. With their legacy well established and their ability to captivate audiences of all generations, anticipation for this new album is at an all-time high. Rock fans and enthusiasts are eagerly waiting to immerse themselves in the new songs offered by this iconic British band, and here we invite you to enjoy a detailed reading of A Magic Rain Made Song. Conexión Rock Radio: Good morning from Honduras Bob and Lee, a pleasure to talk with you again after many years, precisely in 2018 when you released Lost on the Road to Eternity, and here in this interview we will share with Magnum fans throughout the world of important news that the band has in 2024, welcome! Bob Catley: Thank you very much! Cheers this Christmas and New Year's Eve to all of you! I hope everyone is well there in Latin America, we were there this year, which just happened in Mexico last summer, and we hope to return, but especially visit other countries. Lee Morris: Thank you very much for the interview Johonny, and we wish all the fans there in Latin America a happy start to the year, and as Bob said we hope to visit you again soon, here ready for a conversation with you. CR: Thank you both very much again for your time there at home.
First of all, I express our good wishes for Tony to recover soon. We know that the band has canceled their upcoming tours as a show of support and solidarity in these difficult times. Have you had any communication with him? How does Tony feel about his treatments? BC: Obviously we are devastated by the news, as you know we had to cancel everything because we are interested in Tony's health, due to the fact that we are both good friends and bandmates, and we decided that health comes first in this type of circumstances and that he can recover so that we can recover the agenda on the road. The band is currently going through difficult times and we hope to return to activity soon. LM: The truth is we are dismayed by the news of Tony's health because we had planned to do a series of concerts both in several countries in Europe and in various parts of the United Kingdom, and I can only express my sincere wishes for a speedy recovery for Tony. The impact of his illness has been very hard to the point that he cannot play the guitar, so as Bob said, we made the decision as a show of support for Tony. It will only be a matter of waiting for things to improve and being able to resume the tour in adequate conditions so that it does not compromise his health, since Magnum's future will largely depend on that. CR: From here, if Tony reads us, we express our wishes for a speedy recovery and that he can return to doing what he likes most, which is making music and playing for many people around the world.
Let's talk about good news, the band will release its new album called Here Comes The Rain on January 12, 2024, album number 23 in its history and which will be released via Steamhammer, I must tell you that this will be the album of the month, and that it will definitely will be another of people's favorite releases at the beginning of this new year, are you one of those who seek to meet people's expectations, or do you expect people to react to the songs that the band has released in recent weeks? BC: When we release an album we enter uncharted territory, as you know Johonny we are very lucky to have a large fan base that is loyal and incredible. They have supported the band through the years and they have known how to receive our music with open arms for the simple reason that they are going to obtain very good quality material, we have a lot of things saved that have accumulated and that for some reason They were left out of the recording processes, so interesting things would come later and the truth is we are very lucky in that. Regarding the critics, we believe that they liked the album to the point of praising it, in many countries they consider it to be one of the best of 2024, and for us we are grateful for that type of comments towards us, since we put our heart and soul into each work what do we do. You never know how the fans will react and we are a little nervous when we see the comments, but so far the response has been incredible, and I think that among all the bad news we could highlight this among the good news in our camp. LM: So far the response has been very favorable for everyone. We are very grateful that you have this album as one of your favorites at the beginning of this new year. We only ask for a few more days so that you can fully enjoy it. We are very lucky to have many people who love our music, just as you said Johonny, this is our 23rd release in the history of the band, and we can only say thank you all very much for supporting us and especially for showing us your support in these hard times we are currently experiencing. We are looking forward to traveling and being able to share with all of you the history of Magnum through music. CR: A quick parenthesis: did you produce the album? Did you have an external producer?
How has it been for the band to work on this new process, was it easy or was it difficult when composing new songs? BC: Tony has been in charge of everything here, in addition to being the composer he has also been in charge of the production of the album. He has been involved since Goodnight LA (released in 1990) in producing all of Magnum's albums. So for that reason we do not have an external producer because they would give you a different vision of how things should be done. That's why Tony has the instinct to know which path to take when recording something. On the other hand, our label SPV are very happy with it, and I want to say that we are lucky to have Tony as our producer. In previous years we have worked with other people, but we believe that here the one who composes the songs knows how they should sound correctly on a record and can express what is felt in that duration, whether it is a single or an entire album, for example. That is why Magnum always experiences a constant metamorphosis in each release we present, each work here is different from the other, and Tony has contributed constant ideas, providing updates to the sound and changes in some ideas to offer a finished product. A process like this would easily take two years, a year at home processing ideas, chords, vocal melodies and then making the demos to go to the studio to prepare the final idea. So as we move forward with the ideas I complement them with the lyrics, and we say: “there we have one song, and from there two”, and suddenly you have half a dozen and in the end you have enough to say this is what It goes on an album, with the ideas in place we only meet with the band to shape the melodies and the lyrics, know what the rest think, know how they plan to play the song, tones, and so on. Tony presents it first as demos, as everyone knows he can play all the instruments, and the rest complements his work in that part of the process. LM: What Bob says is very true. He sends us the demos, and they are actually very good ideas that we all work with, so you can get an idea of what his vision for the song that Tony has in mind would be like. Then we all get together and present our parts, we give a little more of our effort to know if everything is okay or we can change ideas based on the chords. Then all that is recorded and later goes to the mix. Tony knows how to do things differently, but he also gives you the creative freedom to contribute a little more if necessary, he is open to other ideas, and that is part of the enthusiasm for the sole reason that we are all working together on this. So the vision and ideas are part of a complement, he is the captain and we seek to guide destiny with those songs. BC: Definitely if you're going to have someone in charge, that captain's name is Tony Clarkin. CR: Interesting point of view of how music within the Magnum universe has a significant value.
What impressions do you have of the contributions that Chris Aldridge (saxophonist) and Nick Dewhurst (on trumpet) have given to The Seventh Darkness, which by the way I would call this song one of the most elegant on the album. BC: Thank you very much for your words, apparently you are very excited to listen to the entire album. About the song, I will tell you that Tony made a guitar riff for the song and sang it over the track, and he thought “this would be excellent if we added wind instruments in this section” and we thought we had used this resource before, because not now, even though it wasn't planned that way. And naturally it happened. While we were recording The Seventh Darkness the guests showed up, and upon hearing Tony's riff we felt like it fit perfectly. At first we felt that there was a lot of space, that something was missing. Chris and Nick gave that magical touch with their instruments, which by the way the song talks about politicians, especially bad politicians who tell lies and nonsense to people (laughs), you know, people have a very unpopular opinion of those people to the point of calling them disgusting pigs, and I don't want to be more explicit with those types of people, but on this album there definitely appears a great song like this. LM: We think it's great the way Tony writes a song, and that's what makes a Magnum album interesting. One can experience many things including slight flirtations with the sound of Pop, and suddenly you think “where does this come from”. For example, in Seventh there was a choir section in the studio and we were in the back singing a cappella, without instruments, just a bass drum and a little background noise. All of those elements were perfect in this song. The truth is that this will be one of the favorites in people's preferences once they see us on tour. CR: Here are two great details in this new album, the cover that was done by Rodney Matthews, and the songs, all of which have the potential for the public to receive them with open arms: Run Into The Shadows, Here Comes The Rain, Some Kind Of Trachery, Blue Tango (my favorite when you insert the coin into the jukebox), The Day He Lied, The Seventh Darkness, Broken City and Bordeline are the strong points here. What concept does the band offer us with this album that is a magical journey from start to finish?
BC: I feel that this new album will be one of my favorites, all the songs are very good, like the ones you just mentioned in the question. About the concept, as you said, it is a magical journey through the songs, they reflect the beauty of that album, there is a lot of variety in it since it contains the classic elements of a Magnum album, and that many people will identify with them. I think everyone will love the album because it is very diverse on a musical level, it is brilliant in the execution aspect of its songs, it is something that has its charm, it is my work and the truth is I can't say what my favorite song could be, everything is an absolute piece. If I had to choose freely and without pressure, I could say that Broken City is one of my favorites, especially when Rick does his thing with the keyboard, there is a lot of input from Dennis on the bass, although in general terms I would define it as a sad melody , he even made me cry when singing it. I remember when we presented it on our last tour I could see the fans' tears in their eyes when they heard it, and it was that feeling that I could feel and that ended up breaking and tearing me apart. You convey that feeling with a tremendous song like that, and that's when you realize that that feeling that you give to the fans they give back to you twice as much. I felt that feeling years ago when I sang Les Morts Dansants from the album On a Storyteller's Night from 1985, that emotion was the same when I sang Broken City, and it was too much for me. I had the need to stop because I couldn't sing it, I calmed down and was able to sing it properly for everyone. I am a very emotional person, people understand and feel what I express in my lyrics, some of those leave you with feelings to the point that you cry in a song. LM: At the end of the 70's there was that feeling of devotion and love for the bands, now in the 80's and 90's things have changed, those girls who were going to see us are now mothers who bring their daughters to see us, and including their grandchildren. Magnum has been a multi-generational band that over the years has been fortunate to have loyal fans around the world. One thing is for sure, next time we will see younger fans who will be interested in our music, they will tell their friends about the greatness of that band that they will play that at full volume in their homes, I wouldn't be surprised if many will say "listen This is great”, and that makes the fan have that feeling of belonging to the band, and we belong to the fans, and there is nothing cooler than that. BC: There's no greater feeling when you look out and see mom and dad in the audience, and you see that they brought their kids with them because, you know, obviously mom and dad have grown up with the band, but when they bring their kids and you can see them singing the songs and they enjoy them, you think it's incredible, and for a band with a lot of experience along the way, we see that as something very surprising in our concerts. CR: 51 years of history, albums that are classics, tours around the world and the fans see you as a cult band, how do you and Tony feel about this journey that you have lived in all these years, and that now with Dennis, Lee and Rick many consider this lineup to be the most successful and creative. What is the secret to the longevity of a great band like Magnum?
BC: We've always had great lineups, but this is the best one ever. So this is beyond cool. I want to keep this lineup, I mean, people come and go over the years they see it like any band, and nothing lasts forever, but the band moves on. But now we've had this lineup for quite some time and it's beautiful. Everyone is here for the right reason. They always wanted to be in Magnum. Everyone's told me that, you know? Even Dennis Ward (current bassist) said, oh, I want to be in Magnum and with a surprised expression he said he couldn't believe it. He has played with many bands around the world, but at the same time he loves being a part of Magnum. And Lee to my left said, "Don't worry, Bob, I'm the last drummer you'll ever need." (laughs) LM: It's true, I answered "I'm the last drummer you'll ever have." I want to search Wikipedia and appear as the last drummer Magnum had. Although I joined them in 2017, I seek to ensure that I last longer with them and make as many albums as possible, make a legacy with them, and that my name can be there for the simple reason that I grew up listening to the band and I I made another fan of his music. BC: What Lee says is very true, the musicians who are currently there have been our fans over the years. For example Rick Benton, the keyboard player, said that he always wanted to be in Magnum, and he is now part of the band, and he exclaimed when we told him about his incorporation: “woohoo! It's great". I think everyone is proud to be a part of this band, and especially when you already have a timeline of great continuity, it's a fact that these guys pour their heart and soul into the music that they make, that reaction is like a magnet that brings us closer to each other, and all of those are pieces of a big puzzle, we have a producer and a talented guitarist like Tony, in my case I am the vocalist, and the rest of my colleagues who are part of this adventure called Magnum. As long as the band exists I think there is nothing to worry about. CR: Lee, your debut with the band was for the 2017 album Lost on the Road to Eternity, how do you feel about belonging to a classic rock band like Magnum?
LM: For me it is brilliant to work with these gentlemen who are my bandmates. I have known Bob and Tony for many years, and I have had the opportunity to meet people within the Magnum camp, and life and destiny allowed me to cross paths with them and be part of their current story. My first albums to listen to from them were from the 80's: On a Storyteller's Night and Vigilante, and I was able to see them for that tour in Birmingham, my conviction as a fan was so strong that I wanted to see them up close but fate put me in Another thing was being their drummer, for me that moment was very surreal to be honest, and from day 1 they gave me a warm welcome and I felt part of them at that moment, especially being part of a family that all loves music. We all get along well and are creative when it comes to coming up with ideas for great songs, we even work with the same team without changing personnel, so that's great, and again I'm grateful for the opportunity to play for the band that I've admired since very long. young and I proudly now play his songs. CR: Speaking of secrets Bob, you are seventy-six years old, your voice is in very perfect shape even though you have done other projects like Hard Rain, you have your solo band and you have collaborated with great bands like Avantasia and Ayreon, we want to know how do you keep your voice?
BC: I have had the good fortune of preserving my voice over the years, I try to keep it in good shape, and perhaps I take care of it much more than before. The point here is that it has calmed me down a lot in my routines a long time ago, I try not to shout, because that would affect my performance and I would have a worse experience, and the best thing is to keep quiet when I leave the stage or on the bus back to the hotel. I always spend time with friends having a couple of beers and relaxing. That is a routine that I have done for several years and I avoid shouting in places where there is a lot of noise. On the one hand, you get stressed, and on the other hand, you go deaf and your voice is affected. CR: As we mentioned before, we hope that Tony recovers. Bob, are you in favor of bands celebrating classic albums? For example, The Eleventh Hour turned forty years old in 2023, likewise with On a Storyteller's Night, but in 2025, are you planning to have a celebration revisiting these classics?
BC: The truth is we have put aside that trend of celebrating albums currently, years ago we were able to celebrate On a Storyteller's Night on its 25th anniversary, in the same way with Wings Of Heaven. I think it's not convenient for a band like Magnum not to live off the past. We made that decision some time ago with Tony and the best thing is to move forward with the material we currently have. Those kinds of ideas happen more when record labels prepare special anniversary editions, many bands have done this before, but not now. And it's best to leave the past where it belongs, and I think that would be the same answer Tony would give you in that case. CR: At the end of this interview, friends, what message do you want to send to the people who have enjoyed this conversation, and I wish all of you a successful 2024 with Here Comes The Rain, which many already consider another instant classic in the history of a great band Like Magnum, you deserve the best.
BC: First of all, thank you for the good wishes Johonny, and thank you for the interview, we also thank all the fans around the world who are supporting us at this time especially with Tony's health, and we hope that once the recovers we can do concerts and people can enjoy this new album.
