MAN MACHINE INDUSTRY
Por ejemplo, Mention este año cumple 21 años, mientras que Lean Back, Relax y Watch the World Burn cumplen 10 años, o tienes contemplado relanzar ediciones especiales?

MAN MACHINE INDUSTRY
The World Survived The Reckoning Day A title that could be consistent with a post-apocalyptic-themed film, and that the proposal that we are going to present in this interview fits perfectly into the current situation that the world has experienced since 2020. From Stockholm, Sweden, we present Industrial, Heavy and Thrash Metal lovers to Man Machine Industry, a project that has been active on the map since the year 2000, and which is currently being presented by Eschaton 1- Reckoning Day, which saw the light in March of this year, and that will soon be relaunched on digital platforms with some interesting surprises for its fans around the world. We chat with Jhonny "Berget" Bergman, the mastermind behind the band who provides impressions about the release of this new material, the reception it has had since then, as well as highlighting some interesting aspects of their discography, projects, and expectations for the future. to what would be a trilogy that will be concluded at the end of 2022 and sometime in 2023 with new music that seeks to conquer new followers around the world. He pulls out a beer, listens to the music of Machine Industry in this entertaining read, and witnesses how The World Survived The Reckoning Day. Conexión Rock Radio: Jhonny, greetings from Honduras, and thanks for your time to do this interview dedicated to Man Machine Industry fans around the world, and share the news that the band has this year, welcome! Jhonny Bergman: Thank you for your interest Johonny, by the way, we almost have the same name (laughs), here I am in my recording studio, and ready to talk to you. CR: Thanks Jhonny, we started this interview talking about Eschaton 1- Reckoning Day, the new EP that the band released on March 25 via GWR Records, and which will be re-released on the digital platform on August 26. What reactions have people had towards this new material in the face of several live presentations that you will do in the next few days?
JB: That's right, we are excited to play again in various places, and about the new material the idea was to release singles on all digital platforms. Currently three songs are available from the new material and the main idea was to release all this together with the CD and we considered that this was a good option to obtain some money and thus be able to record the next material, as you know streaming does not generate much so that you can win as an artist, for that reason we seek to collect as many funds as possible and in a few months go back into the studio to record something new for the fans. CR: Already with these songs the expectation has been high, and it will be a matter of time before new material appears in the Man Machine Industry camp. By the way, the name of the EP suggests that it will possibly be made up of a trilogy, what can you share with us about it? JB: That's right, it's a trilogy. All this started when the pandemic forced us to lock ourselves up in our homes here in Sweden in these more than 2 and a half years, and as you know the world faced many loss of life, in the same way at the work level. In the musical part, festivals and tours were suspended, so the best thing was to compose and take advantage of the time while we were isolated. During the process I had around 17 songs composed without vocals, all instrumental. So I thought it would be best to split these songs into EPs, since generally for a full length release 15 songs can be accepted. Although personally I could put between 9 to 10 songs on a disc, for me that is fine, but I think that dividing the songs into 3 discs would seek to keep the listener's attention to the material and that they are pending the release of the second and third. The name of the project is called Eschaton part 1, and the title of the EP is Reckoning Day, so possibly the second part can see the light after the new year, and the idea is that the trilogy will be released in a period of a year and a half instead of two because of the long breaks involved in recording a full album. CR: It's very interesting to do this type of movement because people expect to have a whole album, but having the 3 EPs is like a puzzle that you have in your hands, and when you put all that material together you have literally a long duration.
JB: People will think that these 3 EPs will be seen as 3 albums, I seek to make different concepts in each one of them according to how one story is developing for the continuation of the other. As you know we have faced a pandemic that could have been the end of the world, for that reason each EP will have a different cover so that people know the type of stories that we will talk about through the songs and offer a different scenario in each of the next releases. CR: From your point of view is it easier to make EPs than a whole album in terms of budget and writing time?
JB: About Man Machine Industry people might think that it is a band, when it is really my solo project, here in my studio I have been in charge of shaping the songs and writing 100 percent all the lyrics since I am a multi instrumentalist and I look for those songs to be in accordance with my vision of how they should sound and what they speak in their lyrics. The ideas come first for the melodies I make through the guitar, then I focus on the studio making the tracks for bass, drums and vocals. With the passing of time, the ideas take shape to make way for the mixing and mastering of the final product. I must tell you that I am a lucky person, since I have friends who accompany me as support musicians in live concerts, and I see in them great companions who develop an atmosphere of musicality, and our shows are a guarantee that people can enjoy from start to finish. CR: Currently the restrictions have been lowered and the festivals have been reactivated, despite everything bad that the world experienced in more than two years, it was a sign that many bands did not give up in the face of this great problem, do you consider that despite having vaccines and achieve a breakthrough against the pandemic, do you see that the music industry has a challenge that it has not yet been able to overcome?
JB: The industry had its most critical moment when the pandemic arrived and literally stopped the world, it has been very hard for us not to be able to go on tour or perform concerts, many bands have had to resign and stop their projects due to this situation, in the same way the sound and light technicians had to look for other jobs while everything returned to normal. Currently it is difficult to find a road crew to go with you, because most of them have had an alternative job in the pandemic, exposing themselves in some cases to getting sick. It is the case of many, they have regular jobs and then at the first opportunity they work on tours, for that reason bands like Exodus, Death Angel and Testament are giving everything with various presentations around the world. They had to wait while everything got better, and this is the ideal time to recover all the time and investment lost after the pandemic. CR: That point of view, Jhonny, is very interesting, and by the way, the fans of the band will be watching you once they get ready to hit the road again. The eschaton is a period of time described in eschatological writings and doomsday scenarios. Seeing the cover does it make a clear allusion to the pandemic and conspiracy theories about a possible zombie apocalypse, or is there something else that the band offers us in the conceptual aspect? JB: When the pandemic started as something small but with the passing of days it became a global alert and that put us in a long lockdown all the inspiration came from the news that you watched, and when you entered the studio organizing ideas made the creative process of the songs fast and comfortable in my comfort zone to achieve a large number of songs, although to be honest we would not talk about zombie apocalypse in the EPs, I don't think so (laughs) CR: For this EP you have the collaboration of Jens Mortensen from the band Leech, and Dave Hill from the band Demon, what impressions do you have about the contribution they have given for the songs Reckoning Day and Hi Tech System Collapse?
JB: The idea for the Hi Tech System Collapse track was inspired by the Terminator movies (Hasta La Vista Baby! Laughter), and I thought Dave's voice fit the song perfectly. It speaks precisely of how society builds things that over time will end up controlling us. Imagine if machines really took care of all that, what we used to watch in those science fiction movies now most of them exist in our daily routine. With Dave I had the opportunity to see him together with his Demon band at a festival before the pandemic reached us, we were having a few beers backstage and we had a nice conversation. I told him that I was a fan of his career with the band since 1980 and from then on we were friends. When I wrote the lyrics I thought this would be perfect in inviting him to sing on the song, so I sent him the lyrics and the song and in the following days he sent me everything. Who would have thought that a 74-year-old would record a song, and I could only say in the studio when he was mixing: Incredible, what a voice! We've had the opportunity to work with Jens before on one of our albums called Doomsday Clock, and I decided to have him be the main character on the album cover, describing him as a big guy, which I call President Doomsday, and the track Reckoning Day I wrote it in the middle of the songwriting process, right in the middle.
Already for this trilogy he will have more protagonism, since he will address the people in various scenarios while the songs are passing. This character will undoubtedly give weight to the next two EPs that are in development and that will be released later. CR: Curiously, since the early days of the band you have played all the instruments as well as having collaborations in the studio, but as of 2016's Box Of Horrors you have a stable line-up: Anders Sevebo on bass, Fabian Perreau on guitar. drums and Johan Lund on guitar.
What impressions do you have of the contribution that these musicians have given in this timeline for Man Machine Industry? JB: Well, all the musicians you mentioned are currently not in the band, in recent years there have been changes and I have new collaborators who help me live. Those people who worked with me years ago left music to pursue their normal lives and their families. Anders, my old bass player, was with me for 7 or 8 years, and he retired from the band to focus more on his family, he has bought a house where he lives with his three children. Fabian is dedicating himself to sports especially with mountain bikes and that has always been his passion. He is currently taking care of his newborn, and I think that everything that has happened since the pandemic was severe generated all these changes, I am grateful for his contributions during all this time, so life goes on. The advantage that the musicians who have worked with me have been in the band for a long time, and that has not been a problem for me, since I am a composer and I know how to handle things and guide the musical direction in which I want to work. From the new lineup the drummer is called Nico, and he has participated as a touring musician between 2014 and 2016, and now he is full time.
On guitar I have Mattias who has also collaborated in some concerts, and we will also have two bass players. So once the album comes out, many will have the opportunity in the next few days to see us live together with Death Angel where we will do about five shows in Scandinavia, and it will be a fun experience where people will appreciate the musical quality of its members that they will offer. a killer show, and it will be a fun experience to go out on tour and play again for the people in the places where we are going to play. CR: You currently work with the GMR Music Group label, what impressions do you have of working with this label that has supported important moments in the history of Man Machine Industry?
JB: It is a great honor for me to work with the label. I have been working with them for 12 years and I must tell you that their staff does not interfere with the things you do at the time of recording or producing your material, nor do they require you to release a successful song, or to have special guests on your albums. Everything is simply done based on the vision and what one wants to do with the music, one tries to make everything sound good, it would be tedious for someone to be on top of you to see what you do or what you compose, I do everything my way and that It makes me feel good when a label and its staff give you creative liberties with your proposal. CR: In your life as a vocalist and guitarist you have participated in many projects such as Reignsaw, Rosicrucian, Slap-Dash Inc., Hi-Tech Addicted Legion, among others.
Many consider that Man Machine Industry is the personal consecration of your career, what do you think of this? JB: You're right about that Johonny. All this has been the product of years of effort, since all the projects in which he participated previously were a clear evolution as a musician to create what Man Machine Industry would currently be. I think people should know where I come from and I have been in the music business for many years, as you said mine was from Reignsaw, Slap Dash-Inc and Hi-Tech Addicted Legion where I have left my life and my contributions to make great albums, I have lived different moments in each of the projects where I have participated and it has been a favorable evolution of my past until now that I am playing with Machine. CR: Talking about your years in music Jhonny, many consider that the band has two interesting eras, the first one with the industrial sound since Mention to Lean Back, Relax and Watch the World Burn.
The second was that encompasses a sound that is oriented between heavy and thrash metal without losing its DNA from Box of Horrors to the present. How do you feel going through this long journey with many albums, tours and people who have participated in the different timelines, and especially the public that has been able to know the history of Machine? JB: When I started Man Machine Industry it was supposed to be called Me, Myself and I, I wanted to do something different than what was going on back then when there were a lot of heavy metal bands. There were things that were assimilating at the time when I did Slap-Dash Inc and there were other genres that were starting to gain ground back then. It was the 2000s and that's where I wrote my first album, I was very interested in experimenting with synthesizers and programmed instruments and wanted to keep up with bands like Front Line Assembly, Nine Inch Nails and Ministry. But he went in other directions in the style of Rob Zombie or White Zombie, or a fresher touch with influences from Rammstein, in the end the sound he was looking for in those years had to be more guitar-oriented, and so it was. From the beginning I wanted to be a good guitarist and I wanted to learn much more to make better riffs and structures to make a great song, and in this way the songs were born in a natural order for the compositions that I made in my long times in the recording studio. CR: On this tour do you plan to revisit any live albums in the band's discography, or do you have any requests from fans to do something special?
For example, is Mention this year turning 21 years old, while Lean Back, Relax and Watch the World Burn are turning 10 years old, or are you planning to relaunch special editions? JB: I really don't think those albums are available anymore on the band's Bandcamp or that they appear on platforms or that people download them for a limited time. The band is sounding in a different way to what they did in those years, maybe they will be released again later, and I want to focus on the future and not the past, especially with the new material that will be released soon. For the concerts we will rescue several songs that have not usually been played in years, one of those examples will be To a Blood Red Sky (which appears on the album Lean Back, Relax and Watch the World Burn), and there will be more surprises than people expect. when we're on tour, so we'll have a lot of preparation until that time comes. CR: Building on the momentum you have with this EP, what's next for Man Machine Industry in the next few days? JB: A few days ago we played at a festival, and in two weeks we'll be sharing the road with Death Angel on five dates, after that I'll focus on recording the vocal parts for what will be the next EP, Eschaton 2, and it will be a priority to have it. ready to see the light in early 2023. Currently, as tours have been reactivated around the world, the budgets to organize shows in arenas, small and large venues have become relatively expensive and require a merely competitive structure to satisfy the people who will see these shows in the next few days, as I said we are happy to be part of this tour with Death Angel, and we hope that we can extend more dates either in Sweden or Scandinavia, and then to focus exclusively on the new material.
